Client: Sinarmas World Academy - SWA

Unit Question: How does advertising manipulate our actions?

Document Evidence: Your documented evidence is like a diary. You start it when you first start making your design and it doesn't end till you have finished making your product. Takes lots of photos, make notes on any modification and add sketches and diagrams.

Introduction/Design Brief

My client is my current school, Sinarmas World Academy (SWA). It needs a new logo for the design cycle, areas of interaction (AOI) and the IB learner profile. I will need to create 5 designs for the design cycle or areas of interaction and 10 designs for the IB learner profile. At the deadline, the school will choose the best logos and will use them as the official designs which will be used during the whole year.

I will only have 5 weeks to finish this project:

1 week for Investigation stage

2 weeks for Design stage (15 designs to do) and Plan stage

1 week for Create stage

1 week for Evaluation stage

During this project, I really have to manage my time carefully, since only 5 weeks is allowed. I will have a make a specification table and evaluate the designs I come up in the design stage with that table.

Summary of Researches (Softwares)

I researched about three different ways to create a logo. The cost isn’t a problem since they’re all free. The problem is that I really don’t know how to use ‘picture design’ softwares such as Photoshop, so either I have to find another way to create logos (for example: by drawing it than scan) or I have to watch tutorials or ask my friends to get better with it. Otherwise, A4 paper will be used. The simplest way to create a logo for me is to simply draw then scan it.

Summary of Researches (Logos)

The three logos I have researched all have a common point: they are all very original, containing each one a hidden symbol or meaning. The logos I will design got to have something original, interesting or even a hidden symbol or meaning like the three logos, but it will be difficult. However, a case study of the three logos I’ve chosen gave me some ideas about my future logos.

Interview

1. What do you think about the current SWA logo?

2. What are the specifications for a successful logo?

1. I think it is just fine. I don’t have comments about that logo, it is somehow a bit simple, but not boring.

2. It should be eye-catching, original, with light and attractive colors.

Evaluation against researches

If I compare my designs with the logos in my ‘researches’ section in the investigation stage, my designs are mostly not as creative and good as the logos in the researches part, e.g: FedEx. These official logos are really original and creative, but some of my designs aren’t very creative.

Evaluation Against Specification: Final Design Chosen

Specification Design cycle CommentsSoftware O I’m not sure if I’m going to use softwares to create the

logo, but however drawing is my primary method.

Time +/- I will need to work fast, since drawing 5 logos within 1 week is difficult for me.

Size O I will keep an eye on the size of my logo.

Aesthetics O I will fill the logo with color using color pencils.

Function O Yes, it is representing the steps of the design cycle.

Purpose O Yes, it will make everyone more familiar with the steps of the design cycle.

Security O It wouldn’t contain inappropriate content for kids.

Cost O Creating those logos will cost nothing.

Ease of Creation O The designs aren’t very complex, it will not be very hard to create.

Page 31: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Development+Final Chosen DesignMy final chosen design is the designs of the design cycle, for two general reasons:

-Ease of creation/time: even if the designs aren’t very complex, 10 design to make in two weeks is difficult and too challenging for me, since I’m not good at all in drawing and in editing softwares (e.g. Adobe Photoshop CS4). Only 5 creations for the design cycle’s logo, it will be a lot easier for me.

-Aesthetics: most of the designs of the IB learner profile are either too simple, boring or not creative. I have found out that the designs of the design cycle are a lot more original and creative than the IB learner profile ones.

Tools: Comments

I’m not sure if I’m really going to use a lot Adobe Photoshop CS4, since I’m not familiar with it at all. I will maybe use it just for some modifications. For the rest, I will certainly use blank paper and pencil to draw the design and fill in some color with the color pencils. Then I will scan the finished logo, and print it out.

Evaluation Of the Plan

The Evaluation is somehow simple, but I don’t really know what are the exact steps of creation a logo. The method is different for each person, so mine is just really simple. However, it can surely be followed by someone else.

Document Evidence of making one logo.

In the creation stage, I will not say what I’ve done every lesson. Instead, I will say what I’ve done to create one logo. The method for that logo will be

the same to all the other logos.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 40: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

First, I had to draw a very simple draft of the logo. I did not fill in colors since I’ve discover that the

scanning quality of paper with colors isn’t very good, so I decided to add colors with Adobe Photoshop.

After finishing the draft, I scanned it.Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 41: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Once I’ve scan the draft, I started editing it with Adobe Photoshop. Tutorials and my friends helped me a lot, since I’m not familiar with

Photoshop at all. The general modifications were the background and the border. I got very confused with all the different layers, background, layer 1... But when I have done the editing with one logo, the editing became easier since I got more and more familiar with all the steps.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 42: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

The last job is to print out the final design. The designs were all in color, but when the color printer printed out the designs, we couldn’t really see some

texts or drawings since the colors I see on the laptop and what is printed out have a big difference, so sometimes I had to color it again with markers on

the printed paper. But that wasn’t a big problem.Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 43: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Create stage: commentsThe creation stage, compared to the step-by-step plan in the planning stage have some differences. I said that I would give color to the logo by coloring with color pencils on the draft paper, but at the end I came up with Adobe Photoshop since the scanning isn’t very reliable when it comes to scan colored papers. I also said that normally I wasn’t going to use a lot Adobe Photoshop since I’m not familiar with it, but at the end I found out I have done a very big amount of modifications with that software. To sum up, there are some differences between what I said about the steps to create my logo and what I have actually done in the creation stage, but however it doesn’t really affect the final logo.

Evaluating My Performance At Each Stage Of The Design Cycle

Investigation.

In the investigation stage, I’ve done a design brief (introduction) to generally say what I’m going to do for this project, I’ve researched on different software/method to create a logo and researched on three different real logos and analyzed them. A interview is present, too, I interviewed people some questions that might help me to create the logo. To finish the investigation stage, I ended it up with the design specifications table. I think I’ve done well the investigation stage since I finished all the steps required in the investigation stage of the design cycle.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 46: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Design.

In the design stage, the general and most important thing I’ve done is drawing the draft of 15 different logos: 10 for the IB learner profile and 5 for the design cycle. After having the 15 drafts done, I generally compared them to the ‘real’ logos in the ‘Researches’ part in the investigation stage, I’ve chosen the designs I will make (I came up with the design cycle), created the ‘Evaluation against specification’ table and finally explained why I’ve chosen to make the design cycle’s logos and not the IB learner profiles’ ones. I’m satisfied enough with the design stage, however some designs are too simple, boring or not very creative.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 47: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Plan.

In the plan stage, I created a Gantt chart to plan my time when creating the logos, made a step-by-step plan with images to show the process of the creation, listed and explained the tools which will be used during the creation and finally evaluated the plan stage. In overall, I think the plan stage is well done.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 48: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Creation.

In the creation stage I was actually creating the 5 design cycle logos. I have also done document evidences for the method of creating one logo, since the method for creating all the 5 logos is the same. It was the hardest stage since we had to use Photoshop and create/edit the logo, and I’m unfamiliar with Photoshop so I wasted time reading through tutorials and I needed help from my classmates. However I was lucky to get all the 5 logos done and printed out by the deadline. In my opinion, the creation stage is well done too.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 49: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Evaluation.

In the evaluation (this) stage, I’ve been evaluating my performance in each stage of the design cycle, I evaluated the logos, cited the most&least successful points, explained the impacts on the environment and society and cited the improvements, explained what I could have done better. I think the evaluation stage is well done since I evaluated honestly the whole project.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 50: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Final logos: testSoftware :s

Photoshop was hard to use, I had to see tutorials and ask for my classmates to help

me.

Time :) I managed luckily to create all the 5 logos by the deadline.

Size :) The size of the logos isn’t too small or too big, just ‘normal’ size.

Aesthetics :) The logos are colorful, somehow creative and beautiful.

Function :) The logos do represent the design cycle and not anything else.

Purpose :) The logos are making people more familiar with the design cycle.

Security :) The logos do not have inappropriate contents for kids.

Cost :) No money was spent to create those logos.

Ease Of Creation :sThe design of the logos isn’t complex, but making the logos on Photoshop was hard,

which took me a lot of time.Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 51: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Impacts on the environment/society

The logos have one impact on the environment: printing. At the end of the creation stage, we had to print those logos. Printing needs blank paper, so it will have an impact of the environment since to make paper we need trees, and to have trees we need to cut them down, which will affect the environment.

The impact on the society will be that people who see the logos will get more familiar with the design cycle. It can also help people to remember what each stage in the design cycle is about.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 52: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Most&least successful points

I think the most successful point is when I was actually creating the logos. There were a lot of problem with Photoshop, so I wasted a big amount of time on viewing tutorials and asking my classmates to help me. Even with all those problems, I finished the 5 logos by the deadling.

The last successful point may be the drafts in the design stage, since some of the drafts are too simple and too quickly done.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 53: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Improvments

I would improve the drafts in the design stage if I had more time. Some of the drafts in the design stage are too simple, boring, generally too quickly done. I would spend more time on those drafts, and also when editing logos with Photoshop. As I said before, I had a lot of problems with Photoshop, so if I had more time, I could view more tutorials and make the logos more beautiful and creative.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Page 54: Logo Creation- Full Keynote

Final products

PS. There are big differences between the logos in Photoshop and the printed out ones. I couldn’t take pictures of the printed out logos, but the printed logos have a better quality and the

drawings are clearer then logos here.Tuesday, December 13, 2011
