Daylesford… it’s time to danceTap-Tap-Tappity-Tap

Your future ison the cards

SO admit it… when you’re alone and your shoes hit the floor and they make a tappity-tap sound you bust out in an impromptu tap routine don’t you? SURE YOU DO! Everyone does – there’s a slightly crap (but actually awesome) amateur tap dancer in us all. 2015 is the year to bust out your inner tap dancer and let him/her shine… jazz hands and all. Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre is running beginners’ Tap Dancing classes at the centre, (13 Camp Street) weekly from Thursday, February 5, 5:30pm-6:30pm. Classes are suitable for all ages and absolutely no experience is necessary (experienced bathroom floor tappers welcome). Cost is $100 for the term. Gather your closeted tap-dancer buddies and form a troupe. It’ll be taptastic. For more information and bookings call 5348 3569 or go to ourneighbourhood.org.au.

A classic day outat Hanging RockWHEN you think about it, many of the most iconic Australian things involve rocks. What is it about us and rocks? Of course number one on the Iconic Australian Rocks List is Uluru. Uluru is a total rockstar on the international rock hall of fame. A wander around the magnificent monolith is surely high on everyone’s bucket list. Then you have the Twelve Apostles… (almost) twelve spectacular rock formations jutting out of the ocean on the Victorian coast. Annually, these rocks draw thousands on the pilgrimage down the Great Ocean Road. We have entire towns named after rocks… namely: Boulder in Western Australia, South West Rocks in NSW, Rockhampton in Queensland. We have a street named after our biggest rock band – AC/DC Lane in Melbourne, and there are even ‘creatively’ rock-named creatures – hello there Rock Wallaby and Stonefish. We are soooooo into rocks here in Australia. Locally we are neighbours to one of the most famous rocks in the land. Hanging Rock near Woodend. Of course the number ONE thing to do there is have a picnic at Hanging Rock. Each year thousands of us load the picnic basket with sandwiches, pack the picnic blanket and head over to Hanging Rock for a classic day out. Once a year the Macedon Ranges and District Motor Club host a classic Picnic at Hanging Rock too… A classic car picnic. Sunday, February 8, everyone is welcome to spend a day wandering the rock and swooning over loads of the shiniest, classic vehicles you’ll see. Cars must be 25 years or older, (so expect lots of those ‘Fantastic not Plastic’ stickers). Food is available on site – or BYO picnic for the authentic Hanging Rock experience. There will be loads of family entertainment as well – a jumping castle, sack racing, face painting and an animal farm for the littlies too. (There is no extra charge for these activities – nice one!) Entry to the event is $5, kids under 16 free. (Or enter your own classic vehicle for display for $20.) More information and details on their website: picnicathangingrock.com.au

Hearts and BubblesLove at the Lake

Beer, burgers and buntingBrilliantMENSA is an exclusive club for geniuses. And we have a hunch that the geniuses at the Old Hepburn Hotel might be life long members. You see, the Old Hep is hosting a Twilight Makers’ Market in the beer garden Friday, February 13, 6pm – 9pm. If you are in any way partial to a makers’ market you will understand the higher intelligence the Old Hep has asserted here to make this happen. Wandering around with a well-earned Friday night pot of cider whilst browsing craft stalls is nothing short of revolutionary. At this month’s market there’ll be fab makers selling their awesome handcrafted wares, there’ll be live entertainment on the buskers’ stage, there’ll be delish street food for all, AND the bar will be open (that’s the genius bit). The Old Hep hosts Twilight Makers’ Markets in the beer garden on the second Friday of the month 6pm-9pm. More info call 5348 2207 or go to oldhepburnhotel.com.au

Kyneton has a rich arts culture and a foodie circuit the envy of many gastronomical hubs. Let’s just say the community is blessed with the good stuff. On Sunday, February 15, Kyneton is sharing the good stuff with everyone at the wonderful Taste of Kyneton event. Taste of Kyneton is a food and wine festival for all. It’s a day saturated in flavours from all over the region, humming to local music and (hopefully) bathed in sunshine – fingers crossed guys… (last year the event was cancelled due to bad weather. It’s your chance to sample and savour the best food and wine the region has to offer, so come empty handed and empty stomached… it’ll be a big day of deliciousness and feasting. Some of Kyneton’s most awarded and wonderful restaurants will be serving their best dishes. Local wineries will be sampling latest vintages and a delicious day out is assured.Taste of Kyneton is on from 11am – 4pm. Bring a picnic blanket and settle in for an afternoon of dining on the banks of the Campaspe River in the shade. The event will feature its own currency, ‘Green Tics’. Pre-purchase Green Tics and trade them for dishes. Most meals will be 1-2 Green Tics, (1 Green Tic = $5). Some specialty dishes will be priced up to 4 Green Tics. You can purchase Green Tics on the day, or online with entry tickets via trybooking.com. Entry is $12, (online). On the day gate entry is $15. (Kids are free.) Rock up and rock on at the Grande

You’re never too young to rock n rollIT’S never too early to introduce the kidlets to the wonders of a music festival. Particularly if they are well catered for. Kyneton Music Festival (Friday, February 20, and Saturday, February 21,) is treating the kids to a musical feast with Ally Spazzy’s Kiddyrock performing live. The Kiddyrock team are all real live (ace) musos with a passion for bringing real music to a very young audience. Ally is ex-drummer with all girl group The Spazzys, Nadine is a drummer too with her band the Killerbirds and Shaun is a muso who has played some of Australia’s biggest festivals with his other band but let’s face it, it can’t have been as ace as this. Kiddyrock specialise in rock ‘n’ roll jam sessions for kids from six months to seven years of age, and will be bringing some rad tunes for them to sing and dance to at the festival, complete with big bright loud instruments and props. For more info on the Kiddyrock gig go to kynetonmusicfestival.com.au

THROUGHOUT the decades there have been some completely outstanding women of rock. Think of the denim and leather days of the 70s and 80s… (actually, come to think of it, that’s pretty much the rock uniform for all time) – add some big hair and a bigger voice and BAM – you’re a rock chick! Gillian Eastoe is well qualified to perform her Women of Rock show, with decades in the biz performing with greats such as Tom Waits, INXS, Jimmy Barnes, Rose Tattoo, Air Supply, and more. Gillian is bringing her Women of Rock show (with Terry Murray) to the Grande Hotel Cabaret Room, Friday, February 20. Take a journey through the history of Women in Rock as Gillian performs the classics from Chrissy Amphlett, Diana Ross, Annie Lennox, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield, Mama Cass and more. Rock on. Tickets are $15 from The Grande. For more info call 5348 1978 or go to thegrandehotel.com.au

35 bandsand a side of chorizo pleaseYOU know one Summer thing we love? (aside from um, everything??) We love festivals. Heaps of bands, in one place, with friends. A festival is like musical tapas. Heaps of bands get served up to you at once, and you get to sample them all with a hungry group of friends. Some are tasty, some are amazing, some have weird names, and some you turn your nose up at and wouldn’t bother with again. One of our fave festivals is on again this month… The Kyneton Music Festival. This year the festival will run on Friday, February 20, and Saturday, February 21. That is two massive action-packed days of musical awesomeness. The Kyneton Music Festival presents more than 35 bands across the two days on any and every stage available in Kyneton. (…and let’s just say at this festival of musical tapas there are a few with weird names, and none that you’d turn your nose up at.) Just a few of the bands performing include Little Bastard, Money for Rope, Yeo, Laura Jean, Liz Stringer, Video Video, Cherrywood, Lunatics on Pogosticks (awesome name) and Made for Chicken by Robots (probably the best name ever). The festival is an all ages event (Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult) and alcohol will be available to buy at all festival sites (ID required obviously peeps). There are loads of accommodation options in Kyneton or book the shuttle bus to take you home if you live close by-ish… (Castlemaine included.) If you’re up from Melbourne, on Saturday night there is a shuttle bus back to Southern Cross Station at 1am. (Saturday, February 21, happens to be White Night in Melbourne, so there’s PT going all night down there to get you home – too easy.)Tickets to KMF are $70 for a full weekend pass, Youth weekend passes are $30, and day passes are available too. (booking fee applies). Book online at Moshtix.com.au. For the full band line up, accommodation and transport options go to kynetonmusicfestival.com.au. Smart Casual DiningNew at The Argus

Not bitter, just sweetKasey Chambers liveONE of the most unique, honest and recognisable voices in Australian music is Kasey Chambers. Kasey’s country style has broken music barriers and made her a household name. Her latest album Bittersweet (which happens to be her tenth), won the 2014 ARIA award for best country album. Bittersweet tells stories of love and heartbreak and life. The broken hearted title track is a duet with Bernard Fanning (tissue alert if you haven’t heard it). Kasey is on a huge Australian tour with her latest album and will play the Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine) Saturday, February 21, from 8pm. Tickets to Kasey Chambers’ Bittersweet Tour are $49, or dinner and show $84. For more info and bookings go to theroyalc.com.au. Kasey will also pop up in our neck of the woods when she supports The Eagles at Hanging Rock on Saturday, February 28.

THE Argus Dining Room at Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel is Hepburn Springs’ only hatted restaurant, and is well loved for its fine offerings in a stunning historic setting. The Argus is now offering a new Bar and Lounge menu available at lunch seven days a week and dinner on Mondays and Tuesdays. Guests are invited to dine in the gardens and under the magnificent old arches to enjoy the delicious new menu. The new bar and lounge menu sources ingredients locally – many from the regions’ most famous and loved suppliers, and from the owners’ own Vale Hill farm at Smeaton. Dishes include snacks and share platters, light meals, sandwiches and delectable sweet treats, prices are more affordable, making the new Argus Bar and Lounge menu a fab new casual option for eating out. Big Love for Little Bastard

DIYwedding flowersWEDDING flowers are not just a slapped together bunch of foraged flora and random ribbon. Oh no. There is a fine art to combining perfect posies and beautiful bouquets. Not just anyone can do it. Florists study for yeeeears to create their floral works of art. If you’ve ever been curious about dipping your toe into the fine art of floristry, (or perhaps you have an event coming up that you’d like to do the flowers for) - Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre is holding a Wedding Flower Arranging course where you will learn to make bouquets and table arrangements suitable for weddings and other special events. The course will be held Mondays, from February 23. (9:30am – 12:30pm.) Cost $60. For more information go to ourneighbourhood.org.au or to book your place at the prettiest table in town call 5348 3569.

HOW big is a band allowed to get before it becomes an orchestra? We’re not sure. But we’re also not sure that you’d be allowed to call an orchestra a Little Bastard. Little Bastard is a Sydney-side seven piece punk-string band, mixing up a bit of guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, percussion (on whatever is around) and loads of voices. The ‘Bastards have done many a festival around the traps and roll into Kyneton to deliver their energy and awesome tunes sometime over the weekend of Friday, February 20, and Saturday, February 21. Take a look at their Tram Jam on You Tube – if only all tram trips were this ace (bet they didn’t have a Myki). Tickets to Kyneton Music festival are available through Moshtix.com.au. NOW we don’t wish to alarm you… but it’s almost the end of summer. AAARRRGH!! Luckily for us, March isn’t too freezing and Autumn is spectacular, so we’re kind-of not too scared by the prospect. Autumn is also the perfect time to start thinking about heartier dishes and cutting back on the endless summer salads. Piper Street Food Co. is hosting a pasta basics class; Wednesday, February 25. In this two hour class they’ll teach you how to make a classic whole egg pasta which will be used to create hand cut tagliatelli and ravioli. Learn how to whip up a simple and elegant potato gnocchi, and you’ll be all ready for Autumnal awesomeness in your kitchen! The class will be held 10am-12pm in the superb new class kitchen at Piper Street Food Co. (89A Piper Street Kyneton). Cost: $85 and includes the demonstration, hands-on pasta making and tastings. For more info and bookings go to piperstfoodco.com or call 5422 3553.

Bangladeshi deliciousnessin downtown GlenlyonGLENLYON is a very long way from Bangladesh. We Googled it and good old Google tells us it’s 8,810 kilometres away. Some distance, sure, but the fragrant scents of delicious, authentic Bangladeshi cuisine will be wafting over Glenlyon Saturday, February 28, and you’re invited to help come and create them.Bangladeshi woman and Glenlyon local Rizwana Karim will once again host a super special cooking class showcasing the deliciousness of her Bangladeshi heritage in a big day of cooking, sampling and feasting.Join Rizwana for a hands-on cooking class from 10am, followed by a sumptuous sit down four course lunch where you get to feast on all your hard work. Take home any leftovers (yum! – remember to bring containers,) and take recipes home with you to recreate these authentic meals at home. Cost for the workshop and lunch is $35. Saturday night everyone is invited to a sumptuous five course Bangladeshi dinner (6pm for a 6:30pm start) Cost is $30pp, BYO drinks. (There might even be a film screening afterwards. Dinner and a movie = Awesome.)All funds raised from the day will go towards new projects at the Rahela Salahuddin Welfare Centre. A very special welfare centre and school close to Rizwana’s heart in her home town in Bangladesh. This year the Centre plans to build a dam and a shed to house and protect their equipment. So it’s a full day of Bangladeshi deliciousness in down town Glenlyon for a very worthy cause 8,810 kilometres away. The cooking class, lunch and dinner will be held at the Glenlyon Hall on Barkly Street. For more information, and bookings for both events call Rizwana on 0438 177 583 or email [email protected]

Welcome backto The Boathouse

An afternoon of jazzas we farewell SummerOH there you are Autumn, lurking there… just over the page. On the last day of summer, Saturday, February 28, Vida Jazz are playing at Wombat Hill House Café. A gorgeous café nestled amongst Daylesford’s luscious Botanic Gardens atop Wombat Hill. Sure, there’ll be afternoon bubbles, and zingy and freshly shaken cocktails, delicious lunches and afternoon teas with friends, and sure, Tania Petrini will sing a bit of sultry jazz, some funky tunes and a bit of bossa whilst Bruce Millar hits it on double bass and guitar. Sure, it’ll be magical up there, cool in the shade of those ancient trees, but you will be CRYING into those delicious sweet cocktails because SUMMER’S OVER!! Oh Vida Jazz, you’ll have to play the blues all afternoon - waaah!! Farewell Summer. We’ll miss you so. For the long range forecast for Autumn go to bom.gov.au for more info on the gig call Wombat Hill House Café: 4373 0099. (sniff)

LAKE Daylesford is certainly one of the prettiest lakes in Australia. And with the newly reopened Boathouse Café on its shores, Lake Daylesford is once again a must-visit on anyone’s Daylesford itinerary. After many months of careful restoration and thoughtful refurbishment, the new Boathouse is a triumph of tasteful interior design, with walls adorned with works by David Bromley, and historic images of the region. Christian Reuther is in the kitchen (hello deliciousness), incorporating seasonal and local produce, much from the owners’ (Wayne Cross and Chris Malden) Vale Hill Farm. Our four legged friends are welcome too, with special doggie parking available. The Boathouse Daylesford is open 7 days 8am-5pm. Evening functions by appointment. For more info call 5348 2199. Get social with Boathouse Daylesford on Facey and boathouse_daylesford on Instagram, or go to boathousedaylesford.com.au.
