WelcomeNo matter what year you graduated, you will recall the legendary spirit of Loughborough. Although originating on campus, that spirit is shared by more than 140,000 graduates world-wide. Our aim, in Development & Alumni Relations, is to ensure that you continue to be involved with the University, maintain contact with old friends, and make new acquaintances through the global Loughborough network.

We hope that this booklet provides you with a helpful overview of how you might like to get involved and keep the spirit of Loughborough alive because ‘Loughborough is for Life.’

Alumni Challenge WeekendMay 2010 saw the launch of the Alumni Challenge Weekend where recently graduated alumni are invited back to campus to compete against some of the current University sports teams in the Alumni vs. Students Challenge. The weekend was a great success with just over 100 alumni returning. In May 2011 we welcomed back over 170 alumni for the second Alumni Challenge Weekend, and this time round a second challenge was introduced: the Alumni IMS Challenge. We believe this initiative will get bigger and better and if you are interested in being involved or putting together a team please get in touch.

Alumni Family Fun DayReturn to campus to join in our Fun Day and enjoy our special family activities, including an animal petting zoo, donkey rides, Punch and Judy, bouncy castle and a range of traditional games. This event takes place in early June.

Alumni Coffee MorningsRetired alumni and staff are invited to campus each month to enjoy a coffee, catch up and a talk on an area of development or research within the University.

Please visit www.lboro.ac.uk/alumni for our full and varied Alumni Coffee Morning programme.

The weekend is also a wonderful opportunity to see for yourself how Loughborough has gone from strength to strength over the years – thanks to all of our alumni, staff and friends.

Are you planning a reunion and need some assistance? Contact us and we will give you the benefi t of our support and experience. We can also help you to reconnect with old friends you may have lost touch with.

Annual events

It was an ace weekend. Really enjoyed being back in Loughborough and catching up with some of the Lacrosse girls. Thanks!

Not only did the occasion allow me to reminisce on past times at Loughborough, but it also made me feel part of the present and future of the University. I was

surprised by how easily this link was forged.

Social networking: Lufbra in London Lufbra in London is held twice a year, in April and October, at a central London venue. This is a great opportunity for alumni living in London to pop in after work for a quick drink and catch up with friends and University staff.

We are looking to expand this initiative – so, if you would like a ‘Lufbra in’ in your city, please let us know.

Business networking: Loughborough BOND BOND (Business Opportunities for Networking and Development) was launched in 2010 and is designed to support our alumni by giving them the opportunity to: ● Hear leading business people

address topical issues● Share ideas, problems and

solutions ● Increase their portfolio of

business contacts● Network with other Loughborough

graduates

Guest speakers for our fi rst three events include Baroness Sue Campbell Chair Youth Sport Trust; James Sproule, Global Lead for Capital Markets Research and Head of UK Research at Accenture; and Daryl Jelinek, General Manager of the Coca-Cola London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

For further information on the BOND series please visit www.lboro.ac.uk/alumni

Networking

In a challenging economy where everyone is looking for an advantage,

having the opportunity to network with people who share common

bonds of business and university is invaluable.

I initially set up ‘Lufbrakiwi’ to organise weekends away to various parts of NZ. Since then I have hosted various reunions and managed to reminisce

with alumni who have been here for decades as well as those ‘fresh off the boat’! The Lufbra alumni network allows wonderful connections to be made (or restored) – I would strongly encourage you to join up or, if there isn’t one

available, take up the challenge of setting up one yourself.

Alumni and friends clubs and societiesLoughborough Sporting Club The University, working with supporters of Loughborough University Sport, launched a new initiative in 2011. Loughborough Sporting Club brings together all alumni and friends of Loughborough University Sport who wish to be involved in playing and following sport at Loughborough. A busy annual calendar of sporting and social events will be on offer for all members. To join go to: www.loughboroughsportingclub.co.uk

Friends of Loughborough University Arts This society will be launched in the near future and aims to involve alumni and friends in our diverse range of cultural events. Art, fi lm, music and talks are just some of the exciting things on offer. Annual highlights include private viewings, each June, of both the School of the Arts and Loughborough Design School.

I’m greatly looking forward to the launch of the Loughborough Sporting Club. This

potentially vibrant, active social group will hopefully bring together Loughborough

University’s many alumni and friends in a central organisation aimed at encouraging

participation, friendships and support.

About LUDT Loughborough University Development Trust (LUDT) is a registered charity. Donations to the Trust help to ensure that students from all backgrounds can benefi t from the ‘Loughborough Experience’ and that the University remains at the forefront of academic research and teaching.

Increasingly, many thousands of alumni and friends donate to the Trust in support of student hardship, bursaries and prizes or to dedicated Creative, Engineering, Science and Sport scholarship funds.

Further information and details about how you can make a donation can be found at www.lboro.ac.uk/alumni

Development

Studying at Loughborough were some of the best days of my life and I have chosen to give to the University

because I want to ensure today’s students have a similar experience to mine, and so the University can

continue to develop and grow.

The Telephone Campaign Over the past 12 years, Loughborough University has been in touch with many thousands of our alumni through the annual Telephone Campaign. Each year, a team of over 30 current students contact more than 5,000 former students. Each telephone call builds upon and strengthens relationships with the alumni community.

Student callers enjoy sharing the latest University news and developments, promoting upcoming events, updating contact details and helping to raise funds for crucial student support projects. They are also happy to answer any questions alumni may have about life at the University today!

LegaciesMany of our alumni and friends have chosen to remember Loughborough University Development Trust in their Will. Each legacy that Loughborough receives has a great impact on University life. Further information on leaving a legacy can be found at www.lboro.ac.uk/alumni

The one thing all Loughborough alumni have in common is that we went to an educational institution which encouraged

team spirit, respect for others, independent thinking and a passion for sport, the arts and academic success. I am very

proud that today the University still holds these values. My legacy gift is an appropriate way of showing my

appreciation so that those who come after me have the same life enhancing opportunities that I had.
