It did so because of a request from the Public Safety Spectrum Alliance (PSSA). The group sought the pause pending resolution of its request for the Commission to reconsider the changes. The FCC majority said last week they found good cause to stay the implementation of a new leasing framework in the 4940-4990 MHz band. In September 2020, the prior FCC voted to revise the rules governing the band, saying it was underused. The shared band required licensees to provide public safety services as defined under Part 90 rules. Continue Reading CRCT Sides With Canadian “Big Three” Against Smaller Carriers The Canadian telecom industry is dominated by Telus, Rogers, and BCE, who jointly control approximately 90 percent of the market. A measure proposed in 2016 to encourage competition by lowering fees for smaller companies has been dismissed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRCT), reports Telecom.com. The decision was lauded by Telus, Rogers and BCE, but did not play well in all quarters. Taking his frustrations to Twitter, Peter Nowak, VP at TekSavvy Solutions Inc. tweeted, "The CRTC, run by a former Telus VP, just gave a giant middle finger to consumers, indie ISPs, and competition, and gave carte blanche to Bell, Rogers et al to raise our internet rates as much as they damn well want, ad infinitum." For its part, Bell's official response called the CRTC's ruling a "positive decision." Adding the government's viewpoint, federal minister for innovation, science and economic development, Francois- Philippe Champagne, said the government, "will be reviewing the decision and its implications to ensure they align with our policy priorities of affordability, competition and innovation in the sector." FCC to Vote on Closing Telecom National Security Loophole This past weekend marked the unofficial start of summer, and FCC Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel says the agency remains hard at work and she anticipates a packed agenda for the June 17 meeting. This month, the FCC will launch a proceeding aimed at increasing telecom security by closing a loophole that members of Congress say Huawei, ZTE, and others have been exploiting. In 2020, the FCC adopted new rules to require U.S. telecoms to build new networks, and at the same time, rip out and replace equipment provided by Huawei, ZTE, and other covered companies that pose a national security risk. Those rules only apply to equipment purchased with federal funding; the same gear can be used if bought with private or non-federal government dollars. If passed, the measure would close this loophole. The point is “to help keep insecure devices off the market,” Rosenworcel said last week in a blog. The upshot? Chinese-made telecom equipment could lose access to U.S. markets. The collaboration follows last year's announcement of Motorola Solutions' Private Broadband for Critical Infrastructure platform, and the FCC's Report & Order enabling the transitioning of the 900 MHz band to broadband. "Our low-band, licensed spectrum can provide utility companies with the ability to deploy a private LTE network platform that can deliver the advanced capabilities needed as well as the control necessary as they evolve to a more advanced grid," said Anterix Chief Operating Officer Ryan Gerbrandt. "By working with Motorola Solutions to reduce the complexity and cost of deploying this private wireless broadband platform, Anterix is giving control back to the utility companies so that they can better serve their customers and communities." However, that’s not always the case. “We still handle a number of 4G-only and we’re starting to see more that are 5G-only,” explains Nemeth. It’s all based on carrier preference and strategy, he says. Nokia’s mRRHs are designed to allow operators to cost-effectively densify their networks, especially where the deployment of a macro cell would not be appropriate. Micro RRH have small footprints and offer increased deployment options, as well as lower power consumption and so lower operational cost.
