Welcome to your classroomWhat's it like to study at EWU? To begin with, it means you’ll be in the field—sometimes literally. Whether you’re in biology, education or psychology, you’ll take classroom knowledge and apply it to real-world settings.

Just ask Jenae Yri, who leads teams of students at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge.

In fact, EWU is one of only two universities in the country that has a field station on a national wildlife refuge.

You'll collect everything from microbes to mammals, and the analysis and critical thinking skills you develop will help you preserve complex ecosystems, steward natural resources and get a job after graduation. You'll also leave EWU with some pretty sweet canoe skills. It's all part of EWU's commitment to undergraduate research.

2

Page 5: Love your university. Love EWU

Four times each week, Jenae heads to Turnbull to sample the aquatic diversity in a dozen different ponds. When she's done with her research next year, a team of 14 undergraduates like Liam Johnston will keep the project going. Together, they're transforming the way we think about water quality and waterfowl.

Find your mentorEWU understands the importance of mentorship, which is why you’ll have mentoring opportunities galore:

• McNair scholars• PLUS tutors• Residence hall mentors• Faculty advisors• Career counselors• Honors programming• And more!

At EWU, the McNair Program helps first-generation and minority students plan and prepare for their doctorate degrees. Jereny Mendoza and her faculty mentor Dr. Meraz-Garcia are both EWU McNair Scholars.

The one-on-one attention, hours of joint research, and helpful critique from her faculty mentor guided her on a path to a PhD. “He pushed me so hard to publish.”

Now she's an expert in Latino businesses and correctional education, and she'll be earning a PhD in political science at the University of Texas.

4

Page 7: Love your university. Love EWU

When Eastern hosted the 2015 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) event on campus, Jereny had the opportunity to present her research at the conference. She also had the honor to introduce the keynote speaker, Carl McNair, brother of the late Ronald McNair for whom the McNair Program is named. It’s all connected.

That's just engineering, and that's just for starters.

Every EWU program designs its labs and classrooms to help you develop the research skills and practical experience you need to get noticed in the job market. You'll also work with talented faculty who want you to ask tough questions, perform crucial research and help make life better for people around the world.

EWU student Isaiah Ratliff combines his passion for satellites, lasers, missiles, solar power and the smart grid with a love of jazz. That unique mix is a bit like the great jazz album Brilliant Corners: it’s only possible because EWU’s perfect size lets you combine the best parts of all that you love.

Campus is big enough to stand out, but small enough to let you fit in.

Location matters. EWU’s geology students have access to one of the world's most geologically unique landscapes. Add that to the 10 geology labs, libraries and classrooms on EWU’s campus, and it’s easy to understand why 100 percent of geology students have a job after graduation.

Why do we live on campus?

Which hall does Swoop live in?

Swoop’s identity is top secret. So secret, we’re worried we may have told you too much already.

Six reasons you’ll love campus life01 Location, location, location.

Sleep an extra 25 minutes, swing by Baldy’s for breakfast and still make it to class early.

02 One simple, easy bill. Students who live on campus have just one bill for the whole quarter.

03 Fun. An ice rink, a pool, gyms, game rooms, huge TVs, dining halls, coffee shops, parks, fields, climbing walls, and so much laughter your stomach hurts.

04 Friendly neighbors. You’ll never forget the study partners who helped you pass your math class. In fact, you’ll probably invite them to your wedding.

05 Better grades. Students who live on campus have higher average GPAs and are more likely to graduate and go to graduate school. Nearly one-third of students in residence halls make the dean’s list.

06 Resources. Lots of them. Let us bring services to you: you'll get career advisors, health and fitness specialists, counselors, tutors and more.

Enjoy peace of mindthrough safety
