LSK Observes Successful Legal Awareness Week Nairobi, Kenya: Curtains came down on the successful Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Legal Awareness Week on Friday 30 th September 2016. Hundreds of members of the public – including convicts and remandees benefitted from free legal services from lawyers during the Legal Awareness Week between September 26 th and 30 th 2016 under the theme Improving Access to Justice through Alternative Dispute ResolutionFor the first time in LSK’s history, lawyers visited prisons in Nairobi to offer legal services to convicts with pending appeals and remandees The LSK Secretary/CEO Ms. Mercy Wambua led lawyers to Kamiti Maximum Prison and Lang’ata Women’s’ Prison. Other prisons where lawyers pitched camp to offer pro bono services include Industrial Area Remand and Allocation and Nairobi Children Remand Home. The prison visits saw approximately 335 convicts with pending appeals and remandees benefit from free legal services. “We resolved to visit prisons during the Legal Awareness Week as several convicts and remandees are in dire need of legal services,” Ms. Wambua said at Lang’ata Women’s Prison in Nairobi. Ms. Wambua said that the objective of the Legal Awareness Week is to promote the mandate of the LSK by extending legal literacy and awareness to members of the public through provision of free legal advice. Ms. Wambua (pictured (left) Ms. Obell and Senator Ms. Judith Sijeny) with said that the Society would in the near future organise for pro bono lawyers to visit prisons frequently. Lang’ata Women’s Prison Officer in Charge Ms. Olivia Obell hailed LSK for taking free legal services at their door step. “This is the first time Lang’ata Women Prison has hosted this large number of lawyers…We are thankful to LSK for giving back to society in a special way,” Ms. Obell said. The Legal Awareness Week was also observed by LSK Branches in assorted court stations countrywide. Waiver of Payment of Practicing Certificate Back Fees Towards encouraging members to take out Practicing Certificates, The Council of the Law Society of Kenya in its meeting held on 8th April 2016 resolved to grant waiver of payment of back fees to Advocates applying for Practicing Certificates under Section 25(1) (a) of the Advocates Act. This is a call for Advocates who have for 12 months or more ceased to hold a practicing certificate to take advantage of the waiver. Take note that this waiver of payment of back fees only applies to those advocates who will apply for Practicing Certificates for the current year 2016.
