APD Update

Learning and fun has been flourishing in Al Pi Darko with English, Math, Art, Science, and more! Other highlights of learning have been enjoying food preparation such as making cheese sandwiches, salad, and cereal and milk, and developing great communication skills when we solve conflicts at our peace table :).

Pre-Yeshiva Shabbaton This past Shabbos, 8th grade had an exciting Friday night at Rabbi and Mrs. Freedman’s house. It started with a Shabbos seudah, followed by an oneg with Kollel Rabbis Epstein, Crystal, and Zeffren who gave practical advice on how to succeed in Yeshiva. Some very valuable tips were shared, from “how to be a good roommate” to “nothing good happens in the dorm after 12:00am.” We laughed together as they reminisced about their failures and successes in their yeshiva years. The sleepover carried through the night with games and ping pong tournaments. The excitement of starting yeshiva was felt by all.

After learning about Birchas Kohanim in Chumash, the 6th graders chose creative ways to depict the Pesukim and Rashis that were learned. There were games, clay figures, and posters, all of which were a beautiful way to present an incredible amount of content.

From Mrs Cowett—Language Arts Middle school students are learning to ask and respond to higher order thinking questions. They understand that their response is not always going to match their neighbor's response, and that, like good attorneys, if they can justify their response using textual evidence, they can respond almost any way they wish. In seventh grade in particular, students worked in groups to respond to questions about The Westing Game, the novel they have just finished reading. One student in each group acted as a lawyer, "interviewing" witnesses, in order to better understand characters, motives, and details of the plot.

Chevra Update A big thank you to "The Chevra" for helping transport chairs and setting up for the community Tehillim gathering with such enthusiasm this Sunday. There was also a member of "The Chevra" who was on call and made himself available in the evening to unload a U-Haul truck for the Bnos

convention. In addition, a few members helped out Thursday evening with set up in the commons. The Chevra is building up momentum; they have had their fourth choir practice in preparation for a Cedar Village choir performance. They are also in the middle of preparing a video to present to the local police departments on Thanksgiving to show appreciation for all that they have done for us as a community. The enthusiasm the boys have shown for a Mitzvos Lishma—without any external reward— is truly inspiring. From Rabbi Kugel—2B Limudei Kodesh In second grade, it has become quite common for boys to tell on one another. Not exactly the way it sounds…the boys look for good things their classmates have done and write a note about them. We hang up all the ‘Mitzva Notes’ on our Caught in the Act Cloud. The boys have already finished filling up the

cloud and now we are ready for more!

6th Grade Girls:

In Navi class, the girls are studying Shmuel Aleph. The process for

accountability in Navi class, called "Navi Picks,” is designed to

provide the girls with student choice. Navi Picks has 3 categories

that allows the students to engage in Navi language skills, content,

and lessons for life. Within each category there are various

activities and assignments for the students to pick and complete.

Students are required to pick one activity from each category to

show mastery. Some examples in the skills category include:

highlighting words from the perek that show a specific mood;

color coding the pesukim; or reading a meforash. In the content

area, students have the opportunity to create a graphic organizer,

write an outline of topics in the perek, write and illustrate a

children's book, or answer questions on the perek. To further the

students’ learning of a lesson learned in the perek, students can

fill out an “Ask the Navi” chart or debate a specific topic with a

classmate. It is a powerful method of creating student

engagement, buy-in, and accountability.
