Choose the Longtime Leader in Expedition Cruising

More than 25 years since we launched our first voyage to Antarctica, Abercrombie & Kent continues to set the standard for modern expedition cruising. Innovation, authentic experiences in uncharted territories and deep experience leading the world’s best small-group journeys — these enduring principles still define every voyage we create, and ensure that A&K remains the leader in luxury expedition cruising.

Raising the Bar from the StartIn 1991, A&K launched its first voyage to Antarctica. We set out to deliver the highest level of service on the best possible vessel, the then-cutting-edge ‘Explorer.’ We established one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios and invited only the top experts in their fields to join our Expedition Team; many of them still sail with us today.

Beyond comfort and service, A&K was intent on delivering a truly luxurious experience, the kind pioneered by Geoffrey Kent more than 50 years ago. “Luxury,” says Geoffrey, “is about creating an incomparable experience, one that tops all others and stays with you long after the journey is over.”

The A&K Way More than 200 polar expeditions later, A&K continues to deliver the most innovative and exclusive voyages to Antarctica and the Arctic. We still sail on the most advanced expedition vessels in both regions — the all-balcony ‘Le Boreal’ and brand new ‘Le Lyrial’ — both of which are exclusively chartered and operated by A&K, as every sailing has always been. We control every aspect of our voyages, from the top-notch service to the execution of expertly crafted itineraries. We boast the highest crew- and guide-to-guest ratios, every Zodiac driver we employ is a field naturalist and our Expedition Team still reflects unmatched expertise in every enrichment category, from marine biology and ornithology, to history and climate change.

Our Commitment to Conservation With every voyage we design comes a deep commitment to protect and preserve the people, wildlife and ecosystems where we operate. Our philanthropic efforts support habitat restoration projects in Antarctica and on South Georgia Island, voyages to deliver equipment to polar scientists and non-profit organisations like Save the Albatross. Long-standing, engaged members of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), the region’s foremost organisation for responsible tourism, A&K team members also serve as appointed leaders on IAATO’s executive and field staff committees.

Innovation and Leadership as a TraditionFrom the expansion of a gorgeous fleet to exploration in new destinations, A&K continues its tradition of delivering uniquely innovative and luxurious polar expeditions, year upon year.

In 2016, we are pleased to introduce a new Arctic adventure, the 12-day Iceland & Greenland: In the Wake of the Vikings, which takes you from remote Inuit villages and geologically stunning islands to lands once trod by Erik the Red and vibrant, high-culture cities. Meanwhile, in Antarctica, our guests will be treated to voyages aboard the luxurious, all-new ‘Le Lyrial.’ Like her sister ship, ‘Le Boreal,’ she features private balconies from every cabin but also offers an additional cabin category. Families will also find more to choose from with expanded special departures to Antarctica, created expressly for them.

“The trip flowed perfectly. Our guides were magical facilitators; we saw and did everything, and more than we anticipated or planned. A&K will now be my ‘go-to’ travel company.”

— Lyda M., A&K Guest

From Antarctica to the Arctic, A&K offers unrivalled expeditions to the far ends of the earth. Discerning travellers trust our unparalleled expertise, proven record of success, and signature blend of luxury and adventure.

Expert Support from Beginning to EndBefore you even set foot on your ship, every aspect of your voyage has been designed and arranged from top to bottom by A&K experts with an average of 20 years of expedition cruising experience. Their work ensures an itinerary that takes you to the very best destinations in their finest light. Executing that itinerary is something we trust only to our Expedition Team, who know these regions like the back of their hands. Throughout your journey, A&K’s on-the-ground support teams, including our office in Buenos Aires, provide 24/7 support and ensure adherence to strict A&K standards.

Safety First, at All TimesSafety is first and foremost on ‘Le Boreal’ and ‘Le Lyrial,’ which are equipped with the latest communication, navigation and safety equipment. These include a Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and a satellite weather system that receives real-time images of cruising conditions. The staff and crew educate guests on safe conduct and alert them to current conditions, both at sea and ashore. Serving from an onboard medical facility, an accredited physician is available on every voyage. English is also

the primary language on both ‘Le Boreal’ and ‘Le Lyrial,’ so, in the unlikely event of an emergency, instructions will be clear.

Environmentally Sound VoyagesA&K operates under two important guidelines at all times: to provide our guests with comfort and safety, and to protect the integrity of our polar environments. Our expeditions exceed all environmental protocols, including those set by IAATO, AECO, the National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency and Antarctic Treaty Party nations. We educate and offer guests the opportunity to participate in important conservation efforts. Both ‘Le Lyrial’ and ‘Le Boreal’ also employ the latest environmental practices and technology, including a computerised dynamic positioning system that eliminates the need to drop anchor in fragile marine reserves; thermal and phonic insulation in engines and propulsion systems to reduce energy consumption; the cleanest-burning marine gas oil fuel; and Zodiacs that feature fuel-efficient motors.

“[We] chose this trip in part because of the balconies. They did not disappoint. A great room on a beautiful ship!”

— Sheldon and Sue S., A&K Guests

At A&K, we know that the journey is as important as the destination, especially when voyaging to the most remote regions on earth. Step aboard the brand new ‘Le Lyrial’ for an unforgettable voyage to Antarctica or cruise to the Arctic on her sister ship, the stunning all-balcony ‘Le Boreal.’ Whichever vessel you choose, prepare to be captivated, not just by your destination, but also by a best-in-class expedition cruiser.

It Starts with an Exclusive A&K CharterCarefully selected by our expedition cruising experts, ‘Le Boreal’ and ‘Le Lyrial’ transform into truly luxurious and intimate cruisers on exclusively chartered voyages with A&K. We limit the capacity on both vessels to just 199, guaranteeing a private balcony with every room and boasting one of the best crew-to-guest ratios at 1 to 1.4.

Intimate Sailings Mean Unequalled ExplorationHaving 199 guests grants us Category 1 status in Antarctica. That means no limit to the number of landings we can make (other travel companies carrying more than 200 passengers are restricted to a limited number of sites or no landings at all). Our exclusive charters also allow us to work directly with our captain and crew to optimise our itinerary, and, in the event of changing conditions, lets our highly experienced staff also target other compelling sites. Once ashore, enjoy one-on-one exchanges with our Expedition Team, whose firsthand knowledge of these regions will enthrall you in a way no guidebook can.

Luxury and Adventure Go Hand in Hand From modern restaurants and lounges, a beautiful theatre and all-balcony cabins, to multiple outdoor observation areas and an elevator-serviced marina (where you embark on Zodiac excursions), no polar expedition cruisers deliver luxury and immediate access to adventure like ‘Le Lyrial’ and ‘Le Boreal.’

Embark on a Dream Voyage with Unique Departures

Imagine a polar expedition cruise that does more than reveal jaw-dropping wilderness and incredible wildlife. A&K believes in creating the world’s most unforgettable voyages, and one of the ways in which we elevate your experience is through thoughtfully arranged themed departures. If you dream of photographing ice-clad landscapes like a professional, showing your grandchildren their first penguin in the wild or getting to the bottom of climate change, A&K has just the departure for you.

Adventures for the Modern FamilyPicture your family on a voyage led by a knowledgeable and captivating Expedition Team, venturing deep into the polar latitudes — and far from the distractions of technology — to experience a truly wild place that many never see in their lifetime. A&K understands the beauty of such a rare experience, which is why we offer two unique family departures: a Family Holiday on Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falkland Islands from December 13–29, 2016, and our Family New Year on Classic Antarctica from December 28, 2016–January 8, 2017.

The Young Explorers Programme Designed for ages 7 to 18, A&K’s Young Explorers Programme is at the heart of our family departures to Antarctica. In 2016, A&K is pleased to expand the programme to feature an additional designated Young Explorers Guide with a total of two on every family departure. Experienced educators, our Young Explorers Guides pass on the excitement of the White Continent by leading engaging activities and excursions for our younger guests with everything from squid dissection and Japanese fish printing to deep sea presentations with a marine biologist and Zodiac tours with a veteran of the British Royal Marines. Also new in 2016, A&K’s Young Explorers Programme features two distinct groups for younger and older children — Young Explorers and Senior Explorers — to ensure the most engaging and age-appropriate fun for all ages on board.

Photography Expeditions for All Skill SetsPhotography enthusiasts with a passion for shooting spectacular landscapes — be it on a mobile device or professional SLR — can choose from two unique Photography Expeditions, enjoying the chance to capture the polar regions alongside a professional wildlife photographer. In 2016, A&K also enhanced these departures by enlisting not one but two expert photography coaches to join you on each departure. Choose from: Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falkland Islands (January 17–February 2, 2017), joining A&K’s resident Photo Enrichment Coaches, Richard Harker and Charley Wheatley; and Iceland & Greenland: In the Wake of the Vikings (August 16–27, 2016), joining Richard and Nikon ambassador Michelle Valberg.

Understanding Climate ChangeCommitted to preserving natural habitats, protecting wildlife and supporting indigenous peoples throughout the world, A&K has long been engaged with conservation and scientific research efforts in both polar regions. Here, in these fragile ecosystems — often regarded as the most pristine on earth — the impact of environmental disturbances is difficult to miss. Explore under the wing of Dr. James McClintock, noted Antarctic researcher and resident A&K climate change expert, during a special departure, Understanding Climate Change (January 7–18, 2017) on Classic Antarctica. In addition to the highlights of the voyage itself, this unique itinerary includes lectures and excursions focused on environmental conservation led by Jim. In addition, guests enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime visit to the U.S. Palmer Research Station (weather permitting), taking a behind-the-scenes tour with the scientists who live and work there, and, perhaps, presenting them with new scientific equipment, courtesy of A&K Philanthropy. “The ship, cabin, Expedition Team — all of

the above were beyond fantastic. They made every fantasy I ever had about visiting Antarctica come true and then some.”

— Dann and Jojeanne A., A&K Guests

Introducing Antarctica Incredible White ContinentCloaked in glacial ice and surrounded by blue seas bursting with unabashed life, Antarctica is the last truly wild place on earth. Spectacular, exotic, far flung and deeply rewarding in all it delivers, the White Continent is a coveted destination amongst intrepid travellers.

Choose from two A&K voyages, each featuring special departures and each designed to capture the best of the Antarctic spring and summer seasons.

Classic AntarcticaDecember 28, 2016–January 8, 2017 (Family New Year)January 7–18, 2017 (Understanding Climate Change)Travel from the edge of Argentina across the legendary Drake Passage before landing in Antarctica, which you explore for five days. At every turn on your 12-day voyage, your Expedition Team points you toward humpback whales, leopard seals and multitudes of penguins. Choose from special departures that engage your family or your desire to understand climate change.

Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falkland IslandsDecember 13–29, 2016 (Family Holiday) January 17–February 2, 2017 (Photography Expedition)Set sail on a panoramic 17-day voyage to the best of Antarctica. Explore wildlife-rich South Georgia and the unspoiled terrain of the Falklands — spying the regal king penguin, Southern elephant seals and wandering albatross unique to these parts of the Southern Ocean — all before cruising south to the White Continent. Special departures mean time for unforgettable family celebrations or expert lessons in photography.

Antarctic PeninsulaThe northernmost part of mainland Antarctica, this peninsula boasts jaw-dropping vistas of soaring peaks, towering glaciers and drifting icebergs. Ride a Zodiac to Neko Harbour, where you discover coastlines abuzz with nesting gentoo penguins.

Discover the Southern Ocean

UshuaiaThe capital of Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost city in the world, colourful Ushuaia sits within a large bay, bounded by the Martial mountain range and the Beagle Channel.

Deception IslandThis island’s forbidding

name belies its reputation — for years it has served as a hidden refuge from

storms and icebergs. Find an abandoned hangar,

scientific research stations and the thermal waters at

Whalers Bay.

Falkland IslandsAn archipelago in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, “the Falklands” are located 482 kilometres from the coast of South America. The capital, Stanley, is located in the East Falklands, while the rest of the islands reveal wildlife havens.

South Shetland IslandsJust north of the Antarctic Peninsula, cruise to these islands across the breathtaking Lemaire Channel and visit Half Moon Bay, Penguin and Deception islands, and a scientific research station.

South GeorgiaCalled the “Galápagos of the Southern Ocean” for

its astonishing biodiversity, remote South Georgia may actually be more biologically diverse thanks to

its location at the crossroads of warm and cold ocean currents. Home to nearly 1,500 recorded species of

birds and marine life, Ernest Shackleton also made his historic 1916 crossing here.

DAY 2: Ushuaia | Gateway to Antarctica Fly to the charming seaside town of Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. On arrival, enjoy lunch at the Arakur resort and — time and weather permitting — the opportunity to take a guided trek in the Cerro Alarken Nature Reserve or simply relax with a cappuccino and enjoy the scenic views of Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel. This afternoon, arrive at your ship and settle in for your first night on board. Stylish and comfortable, ‘Le Lyrial’ features all-balcony staterooms and suites only on A&K journeys to Antarctica. Wander the decks to become acquainted with the ship, relax in the lounge and mingle with fellow guests in anticipation of your voyage. DISCOVER THE WORLD’ S L AST TRUE WILDERNESS WITH A&K’ S CAPTIVATING EXPEDITION TEAM , WHICH DRAWS UPON DECADES OF EXPERIENCE.

DAYS 3-4: Cruising the Drake Passage | Epic Passage The southward journey toward Antarctica is an exciting one. An important trade route in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Drake Passage is a 965-km-wide swath of water where the Southern Ocean currents are squeezed between South

America’s southern tip and Antarctica’s northernmost reaches. Its stormy waters and icy conditions often made the journey a difficult one, though the stabiliser-equipped ‘Le Lyrial’ handles it with ease. As you travel in the comfort of your luxury cruiser, enjoy enriching lectures from members of the Expedition Team on topics ranging from birdlife and geology, to photography and history. After lunch, join your naturalists on the deck to look for various species of whales and abundant seabirds, which join other mammals in feasting on the krill-rich waters of the Drake Passage; it’s all just a taste of the wildlife you will encounter in the days to come. Later in the evening, chat with experts about the wildlife spotted today and discuss the next day’s itinerary. ‘Le Lyrial’ | Meals: B L D

Explore the black sand beaches and historic whaling station of Whalers Bay. The bay is set within Deception Island, a once-volcanic caldera where geothermally heated fresh water still laps against the shore.

“We couldn’t have imagined a better trip! We couldn’t be more impressed. This team treats Antarctica and its wildlife with the highest respect and integrity.”

— Nagala C., A&K Guest

DAYS 5-9: Antarctica | The White Continent As the Antarctic Peninsula and its offshore islands appear on the horizon, a sense of excitement begins to build. While day-to-day itineraries depend on weather, water and wildlife conditions, two excursions are carefully planned for each day by the captain and expedition leader. Each cruise day begins with an early breakfast. Afterward, venture out to a number of sites in swift Zodiacs (sturdy inflatable boats). You’ll be guided by expert drivers and accompanied by lecturers, in groups of no more than 10 guests. These sites may include the penguin-filled islands in the South Shetlands of Half Moon, Penguin or Deception; islands off the continental coastline such as Cuverville, Paulet or Vortex; and, weather permitting, the fabled Antarctic Peninsula. You may also sail through Paradise Bay and the Lemaire Channel, referred to as “Kodak Alley” for its stunning, camera-ready vistas of towering icebergs and deep blue waters. After a morning exploring native species and striking terrain, return to ‘Le Lyrial’ for lunch and perhaps some time to relax and scan the wildlife-

Meet the LocalsDramatic diversity and incredible scale define the wildlife of Antarctica. Colossal humpback whales diving deep into icy waters for krill, orcas eying penguins on ice floes, massive albatrosses hugging the wind of your cruising vessel — it is a spectacle like no other. Here’s more on the natives you’ll meet during your visit.

Humpback WhaleThe humpback’s distinctive features include long pectoral fins, a knobby head and a formidable length — about 16 metres long. Known for breaching and slapping the water, these gentle giants feed in krill-rich waters. When they gather in pods, A&K’s Expedition Team excitedly refers to the scene as “whale soup.”

Adélie PenguinPenguins are among Antarctica’s most famous residents, and the Adélie, with its white-ringed eyes and velvety black jacket, is no exception. Arguably the most comical, Adélies walk with more of a waddle than other penguins and leap with great vigour onto shore.

Leopard Seal A fierce hunter, the leopard seal is the only species of seal to feed on penguins, young seals and other warm-blooded prey. Named for its spotted coat, the leopard seal can reach lengths of up to 3.5 metres.

Antarctic TernShown here in breeding plumage — a black forehead extending from the crown to the back of the neck — the Antarctic tern is found in the southern hemisphere. It feeds on fish and is known to roam and migrate across extraordinary distances.

Both primordial and fragile, Antarctica is a key habitat for research into the effects of climate change. Join us on this special Classic Antarctica departure from January 7 to 18, 2017, Understanding Climate Change, for the chance to explore this precious and profoundly moving continent, experiencing the impact of climate change and understanding the power of environmental conservation, up close and alongside Dr. James McClintock, an endowed university professor focused on polar marine ecosystems.

“Many guests come to Antarctica to claim a continent on their quest for seven continents, only to discover Antarctica is by far the most stunning, life-changing destination on earth,” says Dr. McClintock, who has completed 14 Antarctic expeditions sponsored by the National Science Foundation, as well as numerous other expeditions. He also has a point of land named after him at McMurdo Sound in the Ross Sea.

On this departure, Dr. McClintock reveals the ways in which climate change is rapidly inf luencing marine life on the Antarctic Peninsula. He also shares diving adventures in the world’s most frigid waters and his drug discovery programme, which revealed an anti-cancer compound in marine invertebrates.

You also present them with a gift of scientific equipment to aid in their climate change research.

“The gift in 2017 will be six satellite tags that will be attached to Adélie penguins so that we can learn where the penguins are foraging for prey, given sea ice is rapidly depleted by warming,” says McClintock. “It is amazing to see how much this contribution means to the guests who made it possible.”

Meet the LocalsA&K guests who cruise beyond Antarctica find an even greater range and depth of wildlife in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, the latter of which is one of the most biodiverse environments on earth.

King PenguinSecond only in stature to the elusive emperor penguin, the king penguin, with its sleek black head and vivid orange ear patches, reaches a height of up to 76cm. The largest populations are found on South Georgia Island, where they number in the tens of thousands.

Southern Elephant Seal The world’s largest seal, the Southern elephant can grow to over 6 metres in length and weigh up to 3,995 kgs. Their name stems from the trunk-like appendage found on males’ heads, which they use to produce a “roar” during mating season.

Blue-Eyed ShagFound year-round across the Southern Ocean, blue-eyed shags also make short foraging flights to the open sea where they dive for crustaceans and fish. They breed on clifftops, with both parents incubating eggs that typically hatch in spring.

Orca Also called killer whales, orcas represent the largest member of the dolphin family and are also its most powerful carnivore. Seen along Antarctic coasts, this whale is distinguished by its jet-black top and the wide, white patches behind its eyes.

A&K

For an adventure your children and grandchildren won’t soon forget, embark on an A&K family expedition cruise, choosing from our Family Holiday aboard Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falkland Islands (December 13-29, 2016) or our new Family New Year on Classic Antarctica (December 28, 2016-January 8, 2017). Both take you into the last true wilderness in the company of A&K’s kid-captivating Young Explorers Guides, who lead twice-daily activities, landing excursions and evening festivities.

Enhanced Field Explorations In South Georgia, tour a research station (weather permitting) with the scientists who work there. “Children get to talk with them about their work and also view krill catch through their microscopes,” says A&K Young Explorers Guide Helen Ahren, an experienced educator from New Zealand. Young Explorers also take a kids-only Zodiac ride with a naturalist and search for ocean creatures in the tidal pools of the Falkland Islands.

Hands-on Learning on ‘Le Lyrial’ During days at sea, Young Explorers attend hands-on workshops ranging from wildlife identification on deck, squid dissections, special bridge visits with the captain and nautical knot-making with a veteran of the British Royal Marines. “Children also enjoy guided learning sessions with some of the world’s top experts on science, all of whom are part of the A&K Expedition Team,” says Helen.

Zodiac operations began early today, ferrying guests to Danco Island in the Errera Channel, where calm, warm conditions and a glorious landscape were on order for the day. We loved getting close to a colony of gentoo penguins; some of us even climbed the snowy slope alongside the funny birds and then slid to the bottom. Snowy sheathbills and seals came very close to us, while squabbling skuas created much interest. In the distance, noisy avalanches careened down the mountainside.

If there was ever a grand Antarctic finale in store for us, Melchior Islands was it! We boarded the Zodiacs to get closer

to some feeding humpbacks, which regularly surfaced near the boats and afforded us most extraordinary views. One

whale breached completely right in front of our ship — even the captain’s excitement was complete! There were plenty of opportunities to photograph the whales, including the

unique undersides of their mighty tails. It was quite a show, and one that captivated us for some time.

Back on board our expedition ship, we were treated to an outdoor barbecue while we transited the Errera Channel, known

deservedly as the Antarctic Alps. With scenery matching that of the spectacular Lemaire and a fabulous menu that included

caramelised pork ribs, plus the company of our Expedition Team and captain, it truly was a sublime culinary experience.

Antarctica: A Day in the Life at the Edge of the Earth No two days are the same on an A&K voyage to the wild White Continent, and every day is an otherworldly adventure full of wonder and surprise. Here’s a snapshot of one day as experienced on an A&K voyage to Antarctica, during which we explored Danco Island and Port Lockroy. It’s among the many captivating days captured in our commemorative, full-colour Voyage Logbook, which we provide to you with our compliments upon your return home.

During our recap session, Larry shared some fascinating insights on the vocalisations of

whales. Patricia stole the show with an absolutely hilarious dissertation on the redjacket albatross.

With photographs of guests at various points on this expedition, we roared with laughter

regarding food foraging, submissive patterns and the five-metre rule. Marco Favero noted that we

were now heading north to the Melchior Islands.

When we at last returned to our expedition cruiser, our collective group high continued over drinks and a wonderful dinner. Some of the staff were offered the chance to jump into a Zodiac. Watching their excitement, expressed exclusively in French, was wonderful. A more fitting conclusion to this Antarctica voyage could not have been imagined as we sailed north into the Drake Passage en route to Ushuaia.

A&K Voyage LogsAn exclusive Voyage Logbook is provided with our compliments to every guest aboard an A&K luxury expedition cruise. These logs feature day-by-day experiences, wildlife sightings, Expedition Team biographies and the very best moments from your voyage.

Explore the volcanic landscape of Iceland’s Heimaey Island Cruise through Greenland’s breathtaking Skjoldungen Fjord

Visit Heimaey Island, which in 1973 experienced an eruption that created a new mountain, Eldfell, also known as “Mount Fire.” Excavations of the ruins of this remote island suggest there were once inhabitants here dating back to 100 BC. Today, the island’s 4,500 locals share the island with a population of approximately eight million puffins during the summer months. Visit the local village, including ruins of historic farmhouses dating back to the year 650. Later, trek to Helgafell to experience the volcanic landscape. This afternoon, conditions permitting, board your Zodiac for an up-close view of Surtsey Island. Considered Iceland’s southernmost point, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is also considerably young: Approximately 50 years old, Surtsey was created from volcanic eruptions occurring between 1963 and 1967. ‘Le Boreal’ | Meals: B L D

More than half of the world’s Atlantic puffins return to Iceland to breed in spring and summer. On this A&K voyage, discover abundant colonies of the colourful “sea parrot” flourishing on the steep grassy cliffs of the Westman Islands.

DAY 3: The Denmark Strait | Confluence of Waters Enjoy a relaxing day at sea, cruising the relatively narrow strip of water that separates Iceland from Greenland and connects the Arctic Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. Watch for seabirds and whales from the deck in between thought-provoking lectures presented by A&K’s Expedition Team. This evening, join them along with your fellow guests for the captain’s welcome reception and gala dinner. ‘Le Boreal’ | Meals: B L D

Throughout your voyage, disembark on Zodiacs piloted by expert A&K naturalists, who lead you through towering fjord systems, along tundra-clad shores and to landing sites where the great Vikings once trod.

DAY 4: Skjoldungen Fjord, Greenland | Wild Wonderland Arrive on Greenland’s southeast coast for a day devoted to expedition cruising in the stunning Skjoldungen Fjord. This U-shaped fjord is dominated by glaciers that feed directly from the Greenland ice cap. In the morning, land and explore this beautiful

glacial valley dubbed the “Valley of the Heart,” where late summer flowers are in full bloom, and where a wide range of birds thrive, such as common redpoll, great raven and northern wheatear. This afternoon, cruise in Zodiacs for a closer view of the glaciers, some spanning more than 762 metres in width and up to 42 metres in height. Be on the lookout for humpback whales and hooded seals, among the marine life that call these waters home. ‘Le Boreal’ | Meals: B L D

DAYS 5-8: South Greenland | On the Viking Trail For the next three days, ‘Le Boreal’ explores Greenland’s southern coast, inland waterways and remote villages. Following a flexible itinerary shaped by conditions and opportunities, look to retrace the early colonisation trail of Erik the Red, who founded the first European settlement on Greenland. You also trace Greenland’s history of explorations, which ultimately led to the discovery of North America. ‘Le Boreal’ | Meals: B L D

Surrounded by mountain pinnacles, fjords and dramatic ice fields, your captain and expedition leader will determine the best exploration opportunities, which may include areas such as:

Prince Christian Sound: A stunning fjord that connects the Southern Atlantic with the Labrador Sea is nearly 96 kilometres long and approximately 457 metres wide, with sheer cliffs that reach as high as 975 metres.

Iceland & Greenland: In the Wake of the Vikings 12 days priced from US$10,495 Limited to 199 guests Visiting Reykjavik, Westman Islands (Heimaey and Surtsey), Skjoldungen Fjord, South Greenland (Prince Christian Sound, Qaqortoq, Hvalsey, Narsaq, Eriksfjord), Nuuk and West Greenland

Saga of Conquest: The Viking Journey Westward

Qaqortoq: The area surrounding Qaqortaq has been inhabited for more than 4,300 years. Today, the village is still supported by a traditional subsistence economy. Visit the Qaqortaq Museum, which was formerly the village blacksmith shop; the beautiful village fountain, Mindebrønden, which depicts whales spouting water; and the Stone & Man project, designed to transform the town into an open air art gallery.

Hvalsey Ruins: Located in the eastern settlement region (Eystribyggð) of southern Greenland, this UNESCO World Heritage Site, also known as Qaqortukulooq, was settled by Erik the Red’s uncle. It is considered southern Greenland’s largest and best preserved Norse site.

Narsaq: This colourful village is pre-dated by its ancient Norse roots that date back to 1000. Originally a trading post due to its deep water port, the present day village was and still is supported primarily by its fishing industry and sheep farming. The local population climbs just over 1,500, giving the town its status as Greenland’s ninth largest community.

Eriksfjord: Explore this beautiful fjord where Erik the Red chose to settle his home. Visit Brattahlíð, his homestead settled in 982 and site of the first Christian church in the western hemisphere. Brattahlíð also served as an ever important launching point for the first voyages to North America.

DAY 9: Nuuk | Ancient Dwelling Meets Big Culture Nuuk has the dual distinction of being both the world’s northernmost and smallest capital city. Today, explore this quaint yet surprisingly vibrant city. Visit the prominent Nuuk Cathedral, the Nuuk Katuaq (cultural centre) and art museum, and the National Museum, which features the famous 15th-century Qilakitsoq mummies. Back on board, join your Expedition Team and other newfound friends for the captain’s farewell reception and gala dinner. ‘Le Boreal’ | Meals: B L D

An A&K Exclusive Photography Expedition

Join A&K’s resident photography coach, Richard Harker, with special guest and Nikon ambassador, Michelle Valberg, on this special departure featuring lectures, workshops and in-the-field photo sessions.

DAY 10: Exploring West Greenland | Cathedrals of Ice Today, explore the spectacular fjords of West Greenland, starting with a Zodiac cruise among towering icebergs and glaciers. Land on shore for a walk across the high Arctic tundra, alive with wildflowers and migrating seabirds. ‘Le Boreal’ | Meals: B L D

Historians believe the Vikings’ expansion to the west began with the colonisation of Iceland by Norway in about 874. On Iceland & Greenland: In the Wake of the Vikings, A&K guests retrace the routes taken by these legendary explorers, as they made their way across the Atlantic toward North America.

Your itinerary begins in Iceland with a visit to the volcanically active Westman Islands and Eldfell, a volcano that formed in a 1973 eruption on the island of Heimaey. Today, the island is home to about 4,500 people and, in the summer months, upward of

eight million puffins. Conditions permitting, guests may also cruise by Zodiac around Surtsey Island, a rocky outcropping created just 50 years ago from a volcanic lava eruption.

Crossing the Denmark Strait to Greenland, ‘Le Boreal’ also follows the same course plotted in 982 by Norwegian exile Erik Thorvaldsson, better known as Erik the Red. Leading a f leet of settlers from Iceland to Greenland, he established two settlements on the icy land mass.

“Erik called the place Greenland to make it sound attractive,” says Bob Burton, author and A&K lecturer on polar history. “To be fair, it was greener then than it is now, because he arrived during a period of climatic warming. The settlements f lourished and the remains of 300 farms have since been found in the area.”

A&K guests cruise along Greenland’s southern tip, landing by Zodiac among icy fjords, and then venturing into Prince Christian Sound to go ashore in the town of Nanortalik. Following the Viking Trail, they visit Eriksfjord on Greenland’s southwest coast, where Erik the Red had a farm named Brattahlíð, site of the first Christian church in the western hemisphere.

DAY 11: Reykjavik | Creative Capital Disembark ‘Le Boreal’ in Kangerlussuaq and return to Reykjavik by charter flight. Upon arrival, transfer to your city centre hotel. This evening, sit down to a feast with your fellow travellers and A&K Expedition Team for a farewell reception and dinner. Radisson Blu Saga Hotel | Meals: B L D

Erik the Red leads settlers from Iceland to Greenland and

establishes two new colonies.

Blown off course by a storm, Viking sailor Bjarni Herjolfsson becomes the first European to sight the east coast of America and returns to Greenland to tell the tale.

Leif Eriksson and his crew make landfall in what was most

likely Nova Scotia, becoming the first Europeans to officially

set foot in North America.

Seek out the King of the North, the polar bear Cruise among the jaw-dropping icebergs of Scoresby Sound

DAYS 3-6: Svalbard Islands | Spectacular Archipelago Very few people have the opportunity to view the remote wilderness of the Svalbard Islands. In the Svalbard archipelago, polar bears, walruses, Svalbard reindeer and an incredibly rich variety of birds are as abundant as are cathedrals of ice, glaciers and craggy mountain peaks. An amazing amount of diminutive flora surrounds this barren landscape, which comes alive with colour under the August midnight sun. Your captain and Expedition Team determine the day’s best sightseeing opportunities, which may include these extraordinary regions:

Magdalenefjoren: A stunning fjord with rugged rock walls, Magdalenefjoren surmounts blue-hued glaciers crisscrossed by crevasses, with birds perched in the high cliffs. This “glacier coast” provides magnificent views of slow-moving glaciers travelling out to sea as well as beaches frequented by walruses.

EXPLORE RUGGED SVALBARD NORTH TO THE ARCTIC ICE EDGE IN SEARCH OF THE NOMADIC , ELUSIVE POL AR BEAR.

Ny Ålesund: History here stretches back to the early Arctic explorers. Today, a polar research station occupies the site where a Norwegian coal mine once operated, and scientists study meteorology, seismology, atmospheric sciences and marine biology. Conditions permitting, visit the small community, including a museum, art gallery and the northernmost post office in the world.

Alkjefellet (Auk Mountains): Set off on Zodiacs (sturdy inflatable boats) to explore the 99 metre sheer cliffs that are home to 60,000 guillemots and kittiwakes. These nests attract “poaching” polar bears and Arctic foxes, who come for the feast of eggs and birds, and provide opportunities for us to view them safely from your Zodiacs.

Monaco Bay and Glacier: Located in Northwest Spitsbergen, Monaco Bay is frequented by a variety of wildlife populations, including polar bears, walruses, Harbour and bearded seals, and a multitude of seabirds.

Liefdefjorden (Loves Bay): In far northern Svalbard, this is an excellent area for spotting polar bears and other Arctic wildlife.

Throughout your landings and days of cruising in Spitsbergen, your primary objective will be to search for polar bears as they hunt in their true natural habitat — be it on land or among the ice floes. Each landing is under the close supervision of your bear guardians, who have the best knowledge about where to find the white giants. ‘Le Boreal’ | Meals: B L D

DAYS 7-8: Cruising the Greenland Sea | Along the Ice Edge Cruise along the Arctic ice edge through the Greenland Sea, as lecturers recap their presentations on the wildlife, history and geology of Svalbard, and prepare you for the world’s largest island: Greenland. Spend time on board with new friends and the Expedition Team, ever on the lookout for wildlife. ‘Le Boreal’ | Meals: B L D

“Stunning wildlife, geological features and history — take it all in on this comprehensive Arctic voyage from Norway and Spitsbergen to the region’s most remote and magnificent islands.”

— Prow’s Edge Cruise Magazine

DAYS 9-11: Greenland | Franz Josef Fjord & Scoresby Sound For the next three days, explore the rarely visited east coast of Greenland, Kejser Franz Josef Fjord and Scoresby Sound. Embark on twice-daily Zodiac excursions to cruise the intricate fjord network and search for musk ox and reindeer, which are common here. Ice conditions permitting, disembark for a visit in Ittoqqortoormiit, a small settlement founded in 1925 and one of the most isolated villages in Greenland. Next, explore the islands and icebergs of Scoresby Sound, the world’s largest and longest Fjord system. ‘Le Boreal’ | Meals: B L D

WalrusFamously mustached and long-tusked, the social walrus is found near the Arctic Circle in the company of friends. Both males and females have tusks, which serve as a mighty tool to help hoist their gigantic bodies out of water.

Black Guillemot Dressed in red legs, a black bill, and black and white plumage that changes with the seasons, guillemots are deep divers that feed on bottom-dwellers — opportunistically including crustaceans.

Humpback WhaleThe humpback’s distinctive features include long pectoral fins, a knobby head and formidable length (about 16 metres long). Known for breaching and slapping the water, these gentle giants feed in krill-rich polar waters.

Meet the LocalsDiscovering the elusive and majestic wildlife of the Great White North is among the great rewards of an Arctic expedition. From the polar bear to the walrus, look for these striking creatures on your A&K voyage.

Arctic Fox Finding shelter in burrows, the furry Arctic fox feeds on everything from fish to leftover scraps from a polar bear. From winter to summer, its coat changes from white to brown and black, to better camouflage with its surroundings.

Polar BearThe solitary King of the North is found only in the Arctic, where it lives and hunts for seals near ice-covered waters. Well adapted to the harsh climate, the semi-aquatic bear can swim for several hours and also reach speeds of up to 40 km/h on land.

We were surrounded by an abundance of wildlife as soon as we reached the shore and stepped off of our Zodiacs. Numerous Svalbard reindeer wandered right up to us, unaffected as they grazed. There was a jaeger nesting on the tundra, snow buntings and purple sandpipers, and a fox den with two young kits playing outside. As we walked on the tundra, the birds nesting on the cliffs of Alkhornet — kittiwakes, glaucous gulls and gannets — were continuously audible.

By late afternoon, our expedition cruiser had sailed out of Isfjorden to Poolepynten, on the east coast of Prins Karls Forland. Poolepynten is a point on the southeastern side, named after Jonas Poole and known as a walrus haul-out — a place where these massive marine mammals forgo water for land and the chance to socialise. Our A&K Expedition Team led us to the haul-out, where we were able to count around 70 walruses. Taking care to keep a respectful distance, we moved carefully closer to the herd. What a fantastic sight with many excellent photographic opportunities! Several walruses reared up and displayed their tusks. We could also hear them snorting as they jostled amongst each other for a better position.

We were all back aboard our ship in time to freshen up and enjoy a brief recap with the Expedition Team. A lovely dinner followed, with much discussion about what an exciting day it had been and what we hoped to see in the coming days. As we sailed toward our next destination, the settlement of Ny-Ålesund, some of us continued with cocktails in the observation bar, while others retired for the night, eager to rise early for what would surely be another day of adventure in the Arctic.

A&K Voyage LogsAn exclusive Voyage Logbook is provided with our compliments to every guest on an A&K Luxury Polar Expedition Cruise. Capturing the best of your itinerary, these logs feature day-by-day experiences, wildlife sightings, Expedition Team biographies and more.

During the night, our expedition ship reached the Svalbard archipelago and sailed along its west coast toward Isfjorden, where we would embark on our first expedition. Isfjorden (Ice Fjord) is one of the many place names on Svalbard attributed to the British explorer Jonas Poole (1566-1612). It was his report in 1610 on the abundance of whales that encouraged whaling to begin on Svalbard. After breakfast, our historian, David Burton, gave an introduction to the Arctic, sharing circumpolar maps dating from 1595 to the present.

The Arctic: A Day in the Life at the Top of the World You won’t soon forget your A&K expedition cruise to the magical Arctic, which we document and commemorate in an exclusive, full-colour A&K Voyage Logbook, and provide to you with our compliments upon your return home. Take a look at one remarkable day from a recent Arctic Voyage log, during which we ventured to Alkhornet and Poolepynten along the Svalbard archipelago.

Then, an amazing sight appeared: a pod of 100-plus beluga whales! They passed between our ship and the shore in full view. Our marine biologist, Charley Wheatley, described how they were very active and would ultimately form smaller pods of around 30. Lucky for us, they continued to fish for the rest of our time there. Back on board our ship, Charley shared that the opportunity to see so many active belugas was a once-in-a-lifetime event. We all felt very privileged to have witnessed it.

Experience A&K Cruising on Luxurious Sister Ships

Comfort and Luxury Redefined Sophisticated design, high-touch service and unexpected luxuries offer the surprise twist aboard your expedition cruisers. Both ‘Le Lyrial’ and ‘Le Boreal’ boast a convenient layout, aided by three passenger elevators, and beautiful décor, from ‘Le Boreal’s’ modern rich woods to new ‘Le Lyrial’s’ stunning blue palette inspired by the Vega star.

Comfortable and elegant, common areas invite casual conversation as well as private reflection in quiet corners. The Panoramic Lounge and Terrace offer spacious areas for social gatherings, afternoon tea or just relaxing with ocean views, while the elegant Main Lounge offers live music and dancing. The Theatre is a show lounge, perfect for enrichment lectures, movies and nightly entertainment. In the library, find a range of book titles with cosy reading areas and guest computer stations with Internet access. Both ships feature an outdoor heated pool, full-service salon and spa, steam room, and fitness centre. Guests may also arrange an exciting visit to the bridge on either vessel with the captain.

Dining is no small affair with each ship featuring two restaurants and al fresco dining by the pool. The Restaurant serves gourmet, international cuisine while an upper-deck grill restaurant offers casual indoor and outdoor dining for breakfast, lunch and themed dinners. There are no formal evenings, so “dressing for dinner” doesn’t mean a tuxedo or gown.

Strength, style and cutting-edge nautical technology — expect no less on every exclusively-chartered A&K voyage aboard ‘Le Boreal’ and new ‘Le Lyrial.’ Whether sailing to the High Arctic or the shores of Antarctica, every A&K cruise on these superb sister ships delivers the best: the finest expedition staff, most comprehensive itineraries, and the safest and most luxurious expedition cruising experience in the polar regions today.

The Benefits of an Exclusive A&K Charter On other cruises to different destinations, ‘Le Boreal’ and ‘Le Lyrial’ each carry around 250 guests. But on polar expeditions with A&K, we limit individual capacity to just 199 guests. Fewer guests means more opportunities for shore excursions each day, an unbeatable guide-to-guest ratio of 1 to 12 and a crew-to-guest ratio of 1 to 1.4, and — an exceptional highlight — cabins with private balconies for every guest. This smaller vessel capacity also provides us with Category I operation status in Antarctica, resulting in no limitations to the sites we can land on or explore.

Every A&K Luxury Polar Expedition Cruise is all-inclusive; that means pre- and post-hotel stays and sightseeing, onboard lectures, shore excursions, equipment, most drinks, and crew and staff gratuities are all included. Guests sailing with A&K also receive a custom-designed expedition parka and backpack, with our compliments. Pre-order expedition rental boots are also available and are delivered to your cabin, courtesy of our Concierge Service.

Although not expected, published prices may be modified due to unexpected significant external factors not forecasted at the time of printing. A&K is under no obligation to give a breakdown in costs of any

journey. Pre- and post-tour extensions are only available to guests booked on related group journeys.

Modification of programme content to accommodate a smaller group size will not affect the published programme price.

CHILD POLICYThe minimum age is 10 years old unless noted on the itinerary and all children under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Minimum age is 12 years old for Connections European River Cruise Journeys and varies for Family Journeys. Due to ship restrictions, women over six (6) months pregnant are not permitted to travel on Expedition Cruises. A&K reserves the right to decline acceptance of anyone whom it considers unsuitable due to fitness level. A&K also reserves the right to remove from the trip, at the participant’s own expense, anyone whose physical condition or conduct negatively impacts the enjoyment of the other guests or disrupts the tour.

Special Requirement for Antarctica and Arctic Cruises: Due to the remote locations, A&K requires proof of a minimum of $50,000 per person in emergency evacuation/repatriation insurance for all Antarctica and Arctic cruises. This minimum amount is included in the A&K Guest Protection Programme; upgrades can be purchased for higher coverage on request. If you do not purchase the A&K Guest Protection Programme, we require proof of alternative coverage. Please note emergency evacuation insurance provides for covering the cost associated with emergency evacuation and repatriation up to the limits of the respective policy; however, it does not guarantee the timing, method or mode of such evacuation and repatriation, which is subject to weather, location and other conditions or variables outside of A&K’s control.

PASSPORTS & VISASIt is the guest’s sole responsibility to obtain and have available when necessary the appropriate valid travel documents. All guests are advised to check with the appropriate government authority to determine the necessary documents. A valid passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling to all international destinations. Passports must be valid for six (6) months after the return of your journey and should also have sufficient blank pages for visas and immigration stamps.

Many destinations also require a visa for U.S. citizens; this will be indicated in your Pre-Travel Documentation. Non-U.S. citizens should contact the appropriate consular office for entry requirements pertaining to their journey. You may be refused boarding or disembarked from a vessel without liability for refund, payment, compensation, or credit of any kind if you do not have proper documentation, and you will be subject to any fine or other costs incurred by A&K which result from improper documentation or noncompliance with applicable regulations.
