The situation became worseand he started defaulting onhis payments. Soon he hadrun up an overdue debt of Rs.2 lakhs, and further interestwas also mounting. Collectionagents started calling at alltimes and following up for pay-ment. He started receivingintimidating letters and no-tices.

He came under acute finan-cial and mental distress.

By chance he came uponProventure Debt Solutions(PDS). Its counsellors analy-sed his case and prepared adetailed action plan. They ar-ranged with the bank not tocall him thereafter but divertall future calls to Proventure. This provided him with a bigmental relief, while Proventurecould work on a solution to hisproblem.

Proventure observed thatthis was a short term crisis

Are you in financial distress due to credit card debts?By Our Staff Reporter

If you are in financial dis-tress because you had over-extended your liquidity thro-ugh credit card purchases andsubsequent defaults in repay-ment, here is professional helpat hand.

Proventure Debt Solutions,an expert consultancy bodypromoted by two former se-nior executives of Citibank –Ranjit Punja and R. Sudar-shan - offers to renegotiateyour debt with your creditorbank with the view to reduceboth your principal and inter-est liabilities, and also workout a realistic rescheduling ofthe balance debt in such away that a larger proportionof such repayment goes to-wards the repayment of theprincipal and not of the inter-est.

A typical case in which suchhelp was extended by Pro-

venture is narrated below:Mohan Kumar (26) was a

software professional in a largeIT company with a good salary. He opened a salary accountwith a local bank and got twocredit cards.

Out of the salary he sentsome money to his parents, and used the balance to rent agood apartment in Chennai, andsoon started enjoying a good lifestyle.

In 2009, when the recessionstarted sweeping, he was tem-porarily benched with a signifi-cant reduction in his salary.Without much savings and witha need to maintain the life style,he started drawing more on thecredit card and was just payingthe minimum due to keep thecard active. He soon realizedthat the minimum amount hewas paying was only enough tocover the interest charged, andthe principal was not reducing.

and, if managed appropri-ately, would help him to re-build his life. Proventure’snegotiation with the lendingbank resulted in a waiver ofall overdue and penaltycharges. His principal out-standing of Rs.1,60 ,000 couldbe converted into an install-ment loan at an EMI ofRs.7,500 per month.

With this affordable pay-ment schedule and his salarysituation improving, MohanKumar was able to come backto normal.

Proventure functions at1A, 22/40, Murrays GateRoad, Chennai 8.

Its phone numbers are2466 0800 (office); 9566144944 (Ranjit Punja) and98401 12169 (R. Sudarshan).

Calling volunteers for freeservice in Tirumala

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

THE AVM STORY - 58‘Bedara Kannappa’ was not the film debut of Rajkumar as many

think. According to the legend going round in Karnataka, the notedfilmmaker H. L. N. Simha discovered Rajkumar while the latter wasstanding at a bus station in the small town Nanjangood waiting fora bus. Like most legends, it is interesting but not so true. His firstappearance in movies took place in 1950 in ‘Shiv Parvathi’, amythological directed by the sadly forgotten South Indian pioneer,T. Janakiraman. In this film, the well known Kannada actor andfilmmaker Kempraj Urs was the hero and the future superstar andphenomenon of Kannada Cinema, Rajkumar, appeared in a smallrole.

Singanallur Puttaswamy Muthuraja was born in 1927 and hisfather was a struggling stage actor and member of the GubbiVeeranna troupe. Even as a lad he followed the footsteps of hisfather and joined the ‘Gubbi Company’. The fond father had highhopes and ambitions about his handsome son whom he loved to call‘Rajkumar’, the name which made him an immortal of IndianCinema. He played ‘boy’ roles in the plays of Veeranna, with thefather and son waiting for better morrows.

Meanwhile the lad grew into a slim young man with good looksand talent for acting and singing too. He looked around for a breakin movies but that was not easy because the Kannada film industryitself was in doldrums in its early years. Cinema spoke Kannada in1934 and, during the period of twenty years 1934-1953, only thirty-nine movies were produced as against five hundred and twenty-fivein Tamil! However Rajkumar did play supporting roles in films like‘Srinivasa Kalyana’ (1952). (When this film was remade in 1974,Rajkumar played the lead in the big budget color version.)

Rajkumar married his cousin Parvathamma who had undergonehigh school education. In some human lives, marriage and the entryof a wife often contribute inexplicably to the rise of the man.Rajkumar was one such happy case!

When Veeranna produced ‘Gunasagari’, he tried his best tointroduce Rajkumar in the lead role but, for many reasons, he didnot succeed in his attempts. The young man had to wait until 1954to get his well- deserved break as hero.

Besides Rajkumar, ‘Bedara Kannappa’ had in its cast Pandari Bai,Rajasulochana, Narasimha Raju and G. V. Iyer. Narasimha Rajuand G. V.. Iyer scaled the peaks of fame as character actors andcomedians. Iyer, a versatile person of many talents, turnedfilmmaker of distinction and made many successful films like‘Hamsa Geethe’ and ‘Shankaracharya’. He wrote the script for‘Bedara Kannappa.’.

The film was directed by H. L. N. Simha and turned out to bea big it and a milestone in Kannada Cinema. Rajkumar became a starand indeed star-worship in that state began with this film andRajkumar.

Soon he shot to the top as a superstar and a rare phenomenon ofthat State and he played hero in more than 200 movies. His fanfollowing is incredible and he became a cult figure in his State andan icon of Kannada Cinema. He had considerable political clout toobut he did get not involved in that area. Some of his notable filmsinclude ‘Anna Thangai’, ‘Ranadheera Kanteerava’, ‘ChandavalliyaThote’, ‘Hannale Chiguridaaga’ ‘Uyyaley’, ‘Sannaadhi Appanna’and ‘Bangarada Manushya’. (Made in 1972, this film ran for over100 weeks in Bangalore, a box-office record in Kannada Cinema. It ran for 75 uninterrupted weeks in a single theater in Bangaloreand, when the film had to be shifted to another cinema nearbybecause of priori commitment, his fans staged a protest demonstra-tion in front of the theater raising slogans against shifting! Such wasthe mass following Rajkumar enjoyed in his home state ofKarnataka. ).
