By Our Staff Reporter The NCC unit of Jawahar

Vidyalaya (Ashok Nagar),along Indian DevelopmentFoundation, conducted an‘AIDS Awareness Rally’ onNov. 30 at Marina Beach.

More than 500 NCC / JRC /Scouts and Guides studentsparticipated in the rally.

They held placards and dis-tributed pamphlets to the pass-ersby.

Many years later, a South American filmmaker adapted‘Wonder Man’ under the title ‘The Two Husbands of Dona Flora’.The film had many explicit scenes of sex and lovemaking. Whenit was screened at the International Film Festival (called‘Filmotsav’) at Madras during early 1978, it became a rage.Soon after it was adapted in Tamilas ‘Kalyanaraman’ withKamal Hassan playing the twins. This Tamil version too wasa major success.

S. Soundararajan of Tamil Nadu Talkies took Balachandarand others to watch ‘Wonder Man’ several times at theMinerva cinema. Balachandar took copious notes which helpedhim to write the screen story and also work on the film not onlyas the actor but also to assist Krishna Gopal in the directorialdepartment. ‘Ithu Nijama’ had, besides Balachandar, newfaces like Sarojini, the ‘Lux Soap’ fame beauty and actress,Kumari N. Rajam, A. S. Nagarajanand V. Sitaraman whoplayed a major role in the movie and also wrote the dialoguewhich was very humorous. As expected, Balachander scoredthe music and made many experiments which were done for thefirst time in Tamil film music.

V. Sitaraman was on the staff of Gemini Studios for someyears in the story department and did small roles. In his lateryears, regretfully, he lost his eyesight and spent the evening ofhis life virtually in ‘blinded darkness’. A. S. Nagarajan was aman of many talents. He was the editor of this film and anassistant director and played the role of a police officer. Laterhe turned director and made films in Tamil and Sinhala. ‘PaasaValai’ produced by Modern Theaters and directed by Nagarajanwas his biggest success.

In ‘Ithu Nijama’, one of the twins has a music-instrumentsshop where he repairs many such instruments. Such a rolegave Balachandar ample scope to show his proficiency inplaying on many instruments, both Indian and western. Sucha role was a novelty in the 1940s in Indian Cinema. It was oneof the plus points of the film. Balachandar as the musiccomposer made many experiments in music and created somenew trends in Tamil film music. The opening song, ‘Haahahahaha.... Anandam…!’ was done in breezy style with atouch of western music and is sung by the heroine in a happymood after meeting her lover.

He created sensation and some kind of history when he usedSaint Thyagaraja Swamigal’s composition in raga Shivaranjani‘Maarubalka’. As he sings the song in the traditional Carnaticmusical style, the spirit of his murdered twin suddenly springsinto him and he now begins to sing from the middle of the songin a very western style of singing… ‘ Bassanioooo.... Antonioooo... . . . . . . .. Thayir vadaiyoooo….’. This was the first time suchsinging was done in a Tamil movie. Certain purists of CarnaticMusic did not agree with the experimentation but Balachandardid not bother about it. An art form thrives only by experimen-tation and change and Carnatic Music is no exception.

In another song, which is a soporific lullaby, he had words notonly in Tamil but also in English, Telugu, and Hindi... ‘’ I willmake you sleep... ‘... I will scold you if you don’t sleep... So jaarajakumaraa ... So jaa. Nidhrapo! (Telugu)... Thoongu! (Tamil)…Sleep...’appuram’ (later) you can meet Nalini...!’ All the songshe sang in any easy style, which did create an impact duringthat period.

(‘So jaa rajakumaree’ From the film “Zindagi”) is one of theimmortal melodies of Indian Cinema, rendered by the great-singing star of Hindi and Bengali Cinema of yester-decades, K.L. Saigal. This song was so popular throughout the length andbreadth of the country that almost every other man andwoman sang it, perhaps not always musically!

Trench dug in Bazullah Road filled with stagnant waterSir, I am a longtime resident of Bazullah Road. Once a prestigious

road, it is now in a pathetic condition. Corporation workers starteddigging a trench along the road margin to widen the storm waterdrain. When the work reached in front of my house, the work wasstopped abruptly. The open unfinished trench is now filled withstagnant rain water which is not only a health hazard but also abreeding ground for mosquitoes.

During digging near my house, they damaged the sewage andMetrowater pipelines with the result that sewage water is enteringinto my sump and contaminating the Metrowater. Even the waterfrom the hand pump is dirty and stinks.

I was forced to install a new Sintex tank with a new waterlineconnection, but since it is not sufficient, I am also forced to buy waterto augment the daily needs.

When I contacted Corporation officials, they said they are helplessas the work has been stopped at the instruction of the trafficdepartment who have diverted traffic via this road due to repair workon Kodambakkam bridge.

I request the Corporation officials to pump out the stagnant waterfrom the trench and cover it temporarily with slabs to avoid furtheraccumulation of rain water. I also appeal to them to rectify thedamaged Metrowater and sewage lines.— Sampath, 72/60, BazullahRoad, T. Nagar

Traffic diversions bring hardships to residentsSir, Following traffic diversions due to the ongoing repair work on

Kodambakkam bridge, many roads in this area are made one-way,causing hardship to the local residents.

Residents, especially students/parents are forced to walk longdistances carrying heavy school bags and cross roads amidst heavytraffic jams to catch the school transport. The vehicle drivers are insuch a hurry that they do not give way to the struggling pedestrianswho often weave through the oncoming traffic to cross the roadthereby risking their lives.

I appeal to the traffic officials that instead of diverting the trafficto the left at the junction of North Usman Road and Habibullah Road, the vehicles may be allowed to go straight and then take a right turnat Bazullah Road junction and go to Rangarajapuram flyover. Similarly MTC buses proceeding to Kodambakkam may be allowedto go straight from Valluvarkottam junction towards KodambakkamHigh Road and then take a left turn at North Usman Road below theflyover and take a right turn at Bazullah Road junction and go toRangarajapuram flyover. – S. Gururamakrishnan, 131,Habibullah Road, T.Nagar

Take strict action against smoking in publicSir, Though there is an all-India ban on smoking in public places,

it is being flouted openly in Chennai.Authorities turn a blind eye to the violation. Non-smokers in the

vicinity of smokers are put to harm due to the long term injuriouseffects of passive smoking from the exhaled smoke.

I recently read a report in The Hindu that the Delhi police havecollected Rs. 55 lakhs as fine for smoking in public places in the past5 years. I appeal to the authorities to implement the rule in Chennaiand fine the offenders.

The fine fixed for smoking in public places is Rs. 200.By implementing the rule, smokers will be discouraged to smoke in

unauthorised places. Also the roadside vendors and tea stall ownerswho sell cigarettes should be educated in discouraging its customersfrom smoking in the vicinity of their shops.

I hope the authorities learn a lesson from their Delhi counterparts.– V. S. Jayaraman, 31 Motilal Street, T Nagar
