SRNMC Regulation - 2013 Syllabus

Objectives

The syllabus for M.A English Literature Degree Course under the Semester System has been

designed on the basis of Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS), and it would focus on job oriented-

programmes and value-added education.

1. To enable students to gain proficiency in the use of English Language

2. To expose them to the classics in English Literature

3. To enable them to gain a knowledge of the literary genres, the literary movements, and the

various schools of thought in literary criticism

4. To develop their vocabulary and to help them acquire English language skills and a fair

knowledge of English literature so as to enable them to perform well in competitive

examinations, such as the Public Service Commission Examinations, TOEFL, GRE, and

NET / SET.

5. To enable them to face the challenges in mass media.

6. To enable them to acquire career-oriented skills through Elective Courses

Eligibility for Admission

Candidates who have a B.A. degree in English Literature or a degree in any subject with

English at Part-II level for four semesters from any recognized University are eligible to join this

course.

Duration of the course

The duration of the course shall be two academic years comprising four semesters with two

semesters in each academic year.

Subjects of Study

The main subjects of study offered for M.A (English Literature) Degree Course shall

consist of the following:

Core Subjects - 12

Elective Subjects - 6

Non-Major Elective

Subject - 1

Project Work - 1

Credits

The term ‘credit’ refers to the weightage given to a course, usually in relation to the

instructional hours assigned to it. The total credits required for completing the

M.A (English Literature) Degree Course is 90. The particulars of credits for individual components

and courses are presented on Table 1.

The Scheme of Examination

It is presented on Table 2

Evaluation

The components for continuous internal assessment are:

Two tests and their average --- 15 marks

Seminar / Group Discussion --- 5 marks

Assignment --- 5 marks

Total --- 25 Marks

Pattern of the Question Paper (External Examination)

The question paper may have 3 parts.

Duration of the external examination is 3hours.

Section-A

Ten questions (Objective type with 4 alternatives) 10 x 1 = 10 Marks

(Two questions from each unit–No choice)

Section-B

Five questions (‘either… or’ type) 5 x 7 = 35 Marks

(One question from each unit)

(Each answer not exceeding two pages)

Section-C

Three questions out of five 3 x 10 = 30 Marks

(One question from each unit)

(Each answer not exceeding four pages) ------------------

Total 75 Marks

No unit shall be omitted. Not more than two questions from each unit.

Minimum Marks for a Pass

Theory:

1. 50% of the aggregate (Internal + External Examinations)

2. No separate pass minimum for the Internal Examinations

3. 34 marks out of 75 is the pass minimum for the External Examinations.

Objective: To evaluate the critical competence, logical reasoning and scholarly

composition of the students at the end of the M.A. Programme.

Project

To be submitted on or before the last working day of the semester. It should not be less than

30 pages. It should be a critical perspective of an author or a work or an area of interest. It may

also be a translation or about an aspect in linguistics. It should be based on Methodology and

documentation as per Gibaldi’s MLA Handbook 7Th

Edition.
