Mixed use building in Warsaw

Urban infill in the centre of Warsaw. City-block-scale intervention focused on integration of isolated spacesCourse design at Faculty of Arcitecture, Warsaw University of Technology, 2013, tutors: Maciej Miłobędzki, Marcin Sadowski

The task of this design was to propose a bulding that fills two plots that lie accross a closed city block in the central location in Warsaw. The function is rentable office space complemented with appartaments for visiting employees.

The building sacrifices part of its intensity in order to improve the flow of public space withn the block.

Although the building is divided into three structures, it follows intensity and hieght regulations closely. The development consists of two office buildings and one residential. The shapes of the parts react with the surrounding spaces. The main social area is a plaza accesible form the street. It serves as a main public space with retail areas on the ground level.

In order to create fully-functional public space I proposed to remove the existing fences. Joining the green areas of the plots render an oportunity to develop a little square, which could offer usable recreation venue for local residents and em-ployees.

The flow of space is emphasised by reserved architectual expression of the facades.

In this large scale building we aimed for creating a friendly space for the youngest children. Most decision were made in order to divide the large scale programme into comprehensible, child-friendly interiors. The form is divided into smaller entities containing different functions. The classrooms are arranged into three, two-storey wings that create common space in-between the classrooms for each of the grades.

The frontal area is a space created by a cluster of functional units displaced along the local street. The public space overlooks the nearby lake. The other side of the plot is designd as a big playground with three courtyards for children in differnet age.

Each of the wings has its own courtyard connected with playgrounds on the eastern side of the plot. Corner windows provide enhanced lighting quality within each classroom.

Fire Departament Building + Sports Centre

Fire Departament combined with local fitness centre in Słuzewiec, Warsaw’s modern office districtCourse design at Faculty of Arcitecture, Warsaw University of Technology, 2012, tutors: Paweł Grodzicki, Tomasz Olszewski, Marcin Goncikowski

The main feature of the design is a truss structure creating a bridge between two functional cores on the sides. The structure not only provides large pillar-free areas required for the garage and sports hall, but also integrates the interiors above.

Two hollow courtyard-like areas in the structure improve lighting qualities of the spaces below and create visual connection in-between different areas of the building.

Through transparent gates on the groundlevel, the firetrucks are displayed. Their presence play an important part in the composition and communicate the function of the building itself. The cladding is made of fire-treated pine wood which contrast with the bright red of the firefighters’ equipment

Multifunctional garage building in Warsaw

An utilitarian building as a public space with a mix of additional action-generating spacesBachelor thesis design at Faculty of Arcitecture, Warsaw University of Technology, 2012, tutor: Grzegorz Stiasny

The design is study on how to create a public space in a supposedly utilitarian architecture. I have selected an area in the very centre of Warsaw, which due to complicated ownership status stays empty and still serves as a private parking lot. Underground lies the central metro station, which connects the two lines of Warsaw’s metro.

As the number of parking spaces in the central Warsaw is scarce, I have decided to provide parking space. Rather than removing the troublesome function, I propose five floors of a garage with additional programme. Moving the parking mass up relieved th ground-level, which is designed as a focal point with movement-generating functions.

The fifth floorof the structure is designed as a huge event space with a restaurant overlooking the famous Plac Defilad area. The top floor is a co-working centre for microcompanies. The core of the building hosts four showrooms that can serve as public art gallery.

The building expression is built up by its structural complexity. Structural elements are exposed and facades are left open in order to display the flow of people and cars.

In order to avoid collision with the metro station the structure forms a bridge over exisiting infrastructure. The floors hang on tie bars, which are attached to truss structure on the top floor.

The Tøyen Flowers

Focal point for Øya Music Festival in Oslo, Norway120h competition entry 2014 edition, co-author: Zuzanna Jędrzejewska

Page 33: Maciej Kaszubski
Page 34: Maciej Kaszubski

The task of 2014 120h competition was to design a form of a focal point at Øya Music Festival in Oslo, that would deal with sustainability. In 2014 the festival was to take place in Tøyen Park, one of Oslo’s many green areas.

During the hundred-twenty hours we designed a solar-powered, flower-shaped lantern. The artificial group of flowers relate to he meaningful role the park is to play in the Øya Festival. The flower-like form of the lantern has been inspired by the neighbourhood of the botanical garden and the history of the park that once used to be a garden itself!

The goup of flowers mark the centre of the festival grounds. They stretch between main areas, which makes them easy to spot from most parts of the park.
