PROJECT: BRAVE KIDSCancer chooses no one and sometimes, it afflicts even the most innocent among us: our children. Once diagnosed with the dreaded disease, children are thrown into a totally different world, one even adults fear. It is a world wherein the struggle for life is felt daily, where every little step can be crucial.

One of these children is Seve Perez. In September 2005 – one month after turning 3 years old – Seve was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Seve had to undergo one of the most difficult medical treatments, chemotherapy. He met his doctors more than his teachers, visited hospitals and laboratories more than parks and playgrounds, and had to endure sleeping on hospital beds instead of his own.

Despite these trials, Seve  remained cheerful and playful, very active and inquisitive like any boy his age. He showed tremendous courage facing his affliction. In March 2008, exactly 890 days after diagnosis, and after 1,000 needles, Seve was declared in complete remission.  For the next five (5) years, Seve will undergo regular checkups, and only after 5 years without treatment will the doctors declare him medically cured. With the blessing of the Almighty, Seve will grow up like any regular boy, with dreams and aspirations, though armed with unique experience - that even now, is bringing out firm resolve from him that he will help other children so that no child will suffer as much as he did.

However touching Seve’s story may be, it is not unique. He is just one of thousands who suffer from childhood cancer in the Philippines. And like Seve, these children are forced to battle their cancer each and every day. This battle sometimes takes years, and is always a very costly one – making it doubly hard for the children and their families.

The courageous spirit of Seve and over a thousand other children who gamely battle cancer have inspired Seve’s parents, Paul and Sigrid Perez, to establish Project: Brave Kids.

Kalinangan Youth Foundation, Inc. (KALFI) is a non-stock and non-profit NGO accredited by the Philippine Council for NGO Certification (PCNC). It was established in 1983 to promote the professional, cultural, personal, and spiritual development of high school girls as well as university and young professional

women. It organizes educational projects in cooperation with study and cultural centers in Metro Manila and other key cities in the Philippines, and with counterpart organizations abroad.

Kalinangan suggests the laborious task of cultivating rough terrain for its fruitful use. KALFI, in turn, believes that the youth are worth this task -- preparing the ground well and keeping it fertile for them -- so that the seeds of education flourish into fruitful knowledge and responsible service in society.

KALFI accomplishes its mission-vision through five Study Center projects: the Balanghai Study Center in Pasig, the Tahilan Residence and University Center in Manila, the Iraya Study Center in Sta. Mesa Heights, the Daniw Study Center in Katipunan and the Banilad Study Center in Cebu.

MADZ ABOUT LOVE | SynopsisUbi caritas et amor; Deus ibi est. “where charity and love are, God is there.” Human love emanates from the most sublime love of all: that is God’s love. It is for the reason of this Divine Love that we are able to love our friends, our family and our spouses. (Ubi Caritas, Caritas et Amor, If Ye Love Me, Ang Pag-ibig) Love is the most universal language that no matter what language one speaks, the gesture of love is always understood. (Sospir che del bel petto, Mas vale trocar, Widmung) As one’s friendship develops into unconditional love, one sings of the experience love brings to one’s life and out come words that speak of eternity. (Iniibig Kita, Mamang Kutsero, Pakisusap-Maalaala Mo Kaya-Minamahal,Sinasamba-Kapantay Ay Langit-Sana’y Wala Ng Wakas).

Filial love, or love for one’s children or parents, is almost always misunderstood. A son’s rebellion against his parents and a Christian who strays away from the Father’s arms. (Gaya ng Dati, Anak)

No matter what love, this inexplicable experience develops in time toward commitment and eternity. (It Might Be You, The First TIme I Loved Forever, Now That I Have You, Seaside Rendezvous, Ale! Nasa Langit Na Ba Ako?, Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko, Superman, What A Wonderful World)

The Philippine Madrigal SingersThe University of the Philippines Madrigal Singers was organized in 1963 by National Artist Professor Andrea O. Veneracion. The group is composed of students, faculty and alumni from the different colleges of the University of the Philippines. The choir is one of Asia’s most awarded, having consistently won all the top prizes in most of the world’s most prestigious choral competitions : Arezzo and Gorizia in Italy, Marktoberdorf in Germany, Spittal in Austria, Neuchatel in Switzerland, Tours in France, Varna in Bulgaria, Debrecen in Hungary, Cantonigros and Tolosa in Spain. They hold the distinction of being the first choir in the world to win the European Grand Prix of Choral Singing twice; first in 1997 and more recently, in August of 2007.

The ensemble performs a wide repertoire of various styles and forms : renaissance music, classical music, Filipino and international folksongs, contemporary and avant-garde music, opera and even popular music. Their specialization and focus on the madrigal idiom has inspired their unique set-up of singing, while seated in a semi-circle, without a conductor.

Through the direction of Mark Anthony Carpio, the corps of composers and choral arrangers of the UP Madrigal Singers continue to produce new compositions and choral settings of Philippine and Asian songs, thus contributing to the growth of choral literature in Asia.

It is expressions of dedication – such as this advocacy and the Madz’ constant reaching out to local and international audiences – that have allowed the Madz to find even more meaning in their musical ministry. All this culminated in a new milestone for the Madz, as they were officially recognized as UNESCO Artist for Peace in July of 2009. The Philippine Madrigal Singers have thus been charged with the mission of supporting UNESCO programs on cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, continuing to serve as examples and ambassadors as part of bringing the choral dream to full fruition.

Repertoire (with choirmaster’s notes)

Part 1 - From the Classics

Love DivineUbi Caritas Gregorian Chant We open with a Gregorian chant that sings: “Where charity and love are, God is there.” This is an antiphon traditionally sung during the washing of the feet on Maundy Thursday. It reminds us of Our Lord’s deep love for us.

Caritas et Amor Z. Randall Stroope (b. 1953) This piece is a work based on the chant. It can be treated as a development of the chant from a simple plainsong to a grand choral work. The composer also incorporates the line "Gaudium quod immensum est!" ("Joy that is immense!") which serves as a joyful and sonorous "refrain" to the sense of compassion and promise inherent in the opening Ubi Caritas text ("Where there is charity and love, God is there").

If Ye Love Me Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) These are words of Our Lord from John 14:15-17. A male quartet will be singing this to help the listeners hear the voice of Our Lord himself telling us exactly what we should do in order to show our love for Him.

Ang Pag-ibig Ferdinand M. Bautista (b. 1978)Musician for Stella Orientis Choir

Madrigali Amorosi Nowadays, it is seldom that we hear madrigals sung by choirs. As the ‘pop’ music during the Renaissance, there were a lot of this kind of music written about love. As the choir that specializes in this kind of music, we would be happy to share some of the madrigals with our audience in this concert. We have chosen two contrasting madrigals and added an art song from the 1800’s.

Sospir che del bel petto Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672)Mas vale trocar Juan del Encina (1468-1529)Widmung Robert Schumann (1810-1856)

Filipiniana Romanticism Here are some Filipino classics that showcase the romanticism in our composers. The male singers, following the tradition of the ‘harana’, or serenade, will sing the first two songs.

Mark Anthony A. Carpio, ChoirmasterMark Anthony Carpio’s tenure as the current choirmaster of the Philippine Madrigal Singers began in 2001. However, his solid credentials and considerable experience, which all stand behind him, have been in place for quite some time before that.

Having always had a strong love for music and performance as a boy soprano, he spent most of his childhood taking extensive lessons in piano and flute. His prowess was then further honed at the University of the Philippines, where he became a Piano major at the College of Music as a scholar in good standing of the Music Promotion Foundation and of the Jovita Fuentes MusiCultural Society. After graduating cum laude in 1992, he would return to the College of Music as a faculty member of the Piano Department – and begin to form what is now a long-standing bond with the Philippine Madrigal Singers. Starting out with the Madz as a tenor, he continued to grow in skill and dedication and is currently a faculty member of the college’s Choral Conducting Department.

A very capable countertenor on his own, Mr. Carpio embodies the Madz spirit of discipline and dedication when it comes to perfecting his craft and sharing it to others. He has spent the last several years conducting the Kilyawan Boys Choir and leading them to several considerable successes and performances of their own, recently in the 2008 World Choir Games in Graz, Austria. His expertise and focus have also made him a sought-after choral clinician, consultant, workshop master and adjudicator for choral events both locally and internationally.

What is love?Mark Carpio, Choirmaster

LOVE...is all

we need.

Love is an internal feeling which begs to be released and expressed, a condition of being, to be magnetized to someone, an idea. Love

is more than just patient and kind, it is chaotic, confusing, dizzying and heavenly.

Meg Montes, Soprano

Love is a gift to

self. To love is a

person’s only tas

k.

Love is the only thing in

the world that allows

opposing feelings to

reside in one heart.

Love is not an emotional state confined to whims and fancies but a transcendent state of consciousness which goes beyond bodily forms. Love dwells in the soul. We must allow it to flow out. By doing so, we remain forever fresh and healthy, revealing our beauty.

Love is mysterious that even for no reason it just happens. Love is the most exciting when there’s so much words to say but you can’t explain it, yet in silence, you are better understood.

Love is one of the most awesome things God has taught us. Love heals. Love endures. It never fails.

Love is a sacred gift

that empowers and heals.

Love is the essence of our existence; the reason for our being. A gift from God that is unconditional. It is being selfless. It brings out the better, the worst and only the best in all of us.

Love is the key to

eternal happiness.

Jacqui Ramos, Alto

Every breath, shared or unshared, is Love!

True LOVE waits.

Love is an unconditional decision.

Love is the angry but meaningful

banging of the piano by a ch

oirmaster

to its struggling choir; the w

armth of a

friend’s voice saying “everyt

hing will be

all right”; it is the struggle

to hold

back tears onstage when I see my

family in the audience; it is forgi

veness,

still, after the millionth mistake;

acceptance after all the hea

rtbreak; it

is a selfless decision, a sacr

ificing

emotion, an endless process we cannot

live without.

Love is a problem that you cannot solve alone.

Love is a surprise; it comes

when you least expect it.

Enrico Lagasca, Bass

Love makes tremendous things possible.

Love is peace.

Love is my strength that helps keep me going through the best and worst in life.

Kia Alvarez, Alto (Trainee)

Love is a strong word; so many definitions. You can’t poss

ibly put into

words. It’s when Joyce gets old, gets

arthritis, and can’t bend over to paint

her toenails anymore, and I’ll do it for

her all the time even if my hands get

arthritis, too! It’s also when Chesca

is scared on her future piano recital-

when she looks at all the people

watching her, she can see her daddy

Potpot waving and smiling, telling her

from a distance, “You can do it baby.

Daddy’s here. You’ll be fine.”

Love is what it is. Any description of it is rather an understatement.

Love is an oblation; it is when we open our

arms and offer our whole selves in our

nakedness to those we love, and at the

same time embracing him/her in

acceptance of his/her totality. Love

marks the start of existence and is the

basis of truly living. Above all, love is

believing that despite human imperfection,

God dwells in everyone and everything-

hence, we forgive faults, forget

shortcomings, overlook excuses. Love,

small as a word, is big in its meaning,

complex in its simplicity. Amen.
