Masthead
There are only three colours used, Black, Red and
White. They are used because it makes the
magazine stand out as they are a contrast of dark
and light, also because they are bold. By using just
three colours the magazine is simple and effective.
It attracts the attention of the target audience
Main image
The main image is of Cheryl Cole. Attracts male
attention as well as the attention of her fans.
Direct gaze is used. This appeals to the target
audience because they will know who she is.
Model credit
Her name is written in bold white letters so that it
stands out. It is formal and will attract her fans to
the magazine. The word 'Rocks' is added because it
ties in with the genre of her music and also the
genre of the magazine. This will tell the target
audience who the artist is. The target audience will
more than likely know who she is already.
Coverlines
The coverlines show a variety of different things
that are included in the magazine, such as new acts
and other acts that people who read the magazine
are interested in. The coverlines are in coloured
boxes so they attract the attention of the
audience. The target audience may not be
interested in Cheryl Cole; however the coverlines
tell them who else is featured on the magazine.
Main cover line
'CHERYL COLE ROCKS' Her album title (3 Words) is
used before this to attract her fan base. It is also
used as a play on words because 'Cheryl Cole
Rocks' is three words.By using her album title, the
target audience will become wider. Also they are
using product placement to advertise her album
whilst at the same time saying that 'Cheryl Cole
Rocks'.
Colour
Neat font. Eyes drawn to the name of the
magazine because it's in the top left corner.
Looks formal. Red and White. Appeals to a
more mature, male audience.
Typefaces
The whole front cover is in capital letters. The
same colours are used throughout.By using
capital letters it makes the magazine seem
more formal. The same colours are used
because sometimes if you use too many
colours the text can't be read. The colours and
capital letters used appeal to the target
audience because they stand out and are
different.
Photography Lighting
The background of the image is darker than
the foreground, Cheryl Cole is lighter than the
background so that she stands out. The image
is close up. She is positioned right in the
centre of the cover. The way Cheryl Cole is
positioned on the magazine cover is quite
provocative, this will attract a wider range of
male attention because it would appeal to
them. It will also attract a range of her fans.
Design Principles Used?
The magazine title has been placed in the top
left hand corner of the magazine; this is
because according to the Guttenberg principle
this is the strongest area. The weakest area
contains the least information.
House Style
The style of the magazine is quite formal. Capital letters are used
throughout. The capital letters are used to attract the attention of the audience.
