Almost everyone of us, at some time orother, take a Sankalpa or make a resolution– vow, to do something. Quite a few of theseresolutions are not fulfilled. It is a practice tomake resolution or take a Sankalpa for doingsomething on important days and occasions.We do want to fulfil these Sankalpas but wefail because we have not done the neededpreparatory work. Certain things are neededto be ensured before we make a vow.

a) Whether I am competent to fulfil thevow.

b) Whether my work will be useful tosustain Dharma.

c) Whether I am aware of thechallenges which I am likely to facein the process.

d) What I must do to strengthen mycapacities to meet these challenges.

So, before venturing for any Karya, in ourtradition, we make a Sankalpa. In thisSankalpa Mantrana, we remind ourselves asto in what time span we are i.e. in whichKalpa, Manvantar, Yuga, Year, Rutu, andPaksha. This is done basically to verify andassure ourselves that what I planned to do isin tune with the Dharma of the Yuga; whetherit will face up to the challenges thrown bythe circumstances, environment andlimitations imposed on the performer. It is alsoto be verified and assured by referring to theastronomical position of Stars, planets andyoga bala as per Panchanga. (Tithi, Vasar,Nakshatra Karana and Yoga). This helps usto prepare against Adhi Deivik obstacles.

Then we focus and identify in which partof creation--Srushti, geographical location,we wish to perform our work. What we wantto do should go in tune with the place. Ourwork should be compatible with the placeand people, flora and fauna of the land. Ifany special precautions are to be taken inview of the possible obstacles or difficulties,by virtue of our being in a particular location,we can prepare ourselves for that. This willhelp us to avoid Adhi-Bhautik or AdhiBhaumik challenges. Next comes thedynamics of identifying ourselves, our lineageand capabilities and unique specialities. Thisis done by remembering the name of the Rishi– i.e. Gotra to whom we belong, ourspecialities, task taken and fulfilled by themin the past. We recall proudly the name ofour parents and Star--Nakshatra under whichwe are born. Everyone of us will have certainunique capabilities by virtue of being bornin a particular Star-configuration--GrahaDasha. We consolidate ourselves andreassure that “I have a remarkable lineageand I am destined to perform remarkablywell”. This thought expunges our lethargy,ignorance, and self-degrading tendencies.

This helps us to combat Adhi-Atmicobstacles. After having settled with peaceon these three frontiers, namely, Adhi-Deivik,Adhi-Bhautik and Adhi-Atmic, (that is why wechant Shanti, Shanti, Shantihi three times,after invocation) one can focus on the task

specific, its purpose and process—forexample, welfare of the Kutumba throughstability, long and healthy life, fearlessness,material and spiritual welfare, and maintainPurusharthas – Dharma, Artha, Kama andMoksha, through the grace of the IshtaDevata. One also determines the way ofworship, process, and extensity. One shoulddo this Sankalpa as a part of daily routine todiscipline oneself and equip himself to lookbefore he leaps.

This discipline will ensure that we knowwhat we are resolving. We will ensure thatour resolutions are not opposed to Dharma– Yuga Dharma, Varna Dharma, Jati Dharmaand, of course, Rashtra Dharma.

We will also be able to focus on ourcapabilities as to whether we are fit to makea particular resolution, understand theintensity and extensity of the consequencesof our action, and to take care of the eventualchallenges.

The Sankalpa will help us to becomeeffective, successful, useful and meaningful.This will also result in our adhering to thetask taken and not leaving it in mid-way.

Ganga Putra Devavrata came to beknown as Bheeshma because, the Sankalpahe took, the Pratijna he made, was Intensiveand Extensive in space and time i.e.

Bheeshma. The day after Ratha Saptani isobserved as Bheeshmashtami, as a tributeto the Hero of the Mahabharata.

All of us should make our resolutions bymaking a Sankalpa in Time, Space andKarya, recalling our strength and unique

capabilities so that the tasks will besuccessfully fulfilled. Vivekananda KendraPrarthana has all the ingredients of thedynamics of making a Sankalpa. Reciting theKendra Prarthana daily is therefore the bestway to make the firm resolution, DridhaSankalpa, again and again.

Once a man went into a wood and saw a beautiful creature on a tree. Later he told a friend about it and

said, ‘Brother, on a certain tree in wood I saw a red-coloured creature.’ The friend answered: ‘I have seen

it too. Why do you call it red? It is green.’ A third man said: ‘Oh no, no! why do you call it green? It is

yellow.’ Then other persons began to describe the animal variously as violet, blue, or black. Soon they were

quarrelling about the colour. At last they went to the tree and found a man sitting under it. In answer to their

questions he said: ‘I live under this tree and know the creature very well. What each of you has said about

it is true. Sometimes it is red, sometimes green, sometimes yellow, sometimes blue and so forth and so on.

It is a chameleon. Again sometimes I see that it has no colour whatsoever’.

In like manner, one who constantly thinks of God can know His forms and aspects. God has attributes; then

again He has none. Only the man who lives under the tree knows that the chameleon can appear in

various colours, and he knows, further, that the animal at times has no colour at all. Others not knowing

the whole truth, quarrel among themselves and suffer.

Fire itself has no definite shape, but as glowing embers it assumes different forms. Thus the formless fire is

seen endowed with forms. Similarly, the formless God sometimes invests Himself with definite forms.

Is Saffronisation A Stigma?

I had once an opportunity to visit anOfficer’s house in Chennai. He and his wifeare employed. They have one girl-child. I waswith the family on a Sunday. The tutored babywas asked by the parents to tell me what shewould like to become in future. The baby toldme “Uncle, when I grow up I would like tobe a doctor”. Then I asked the child why shewanted to be a doctor. The question wasunexpected even to the parents. Concealingthe embarrassment, the parents coaxed thechild to give me a reply. And the child replied,“Uncle, I want to become a doctor because Ican wear a stethoscope round my neck andput on rich clothes. Also, I can buy an A.C.car and live in a posh bungalow. I can makemy life luxurious and can make even foreigntrips”. If this is the purpose for which aperson wants to become a doctor or a lawyeror an engineer, the very goal of education islost. If, on the other hand, the child (or anadult) is able to reply in the following way itis laudable. The better reply would be:“Uncle, somehow I feel I have a taste formedical knowledge. I am sure I will be anefficient Physician of Integrity and service,if I am given an opportunity to studymedicine. Also, I can be a tool in the handsof Almighty to eradicate diseases and ailmentsamong people. Last year in our street, I saw a

small child dying for want of medical aid.Such things should not happen again. It is toserve the humanity that I want to become adoctor”. This is the spiritual dimension ofeducation. It is the dream of SwamiVivekananda “aatmano mokshaartham jagadhitaaya cha”. Symbolically speaking, theservice for self-realization is saffronisation.Why should anybody consider service tohumanity as a stigma or crime?

Materialism is opposed to spirituality.When the God-given talent is encashed forselfishness, for selfish goals such as bodilycomfort, luxurious indulgence, then it ismaterialism. If on the other hand, the God-given gift is utilized for the service ofhumanity as worship of the Almighty, then itis spirituality. Do we want our students to berobots and men and women of self-aggrandizement without any thought ofhuman values, social responsibilit ies,nationalism and spirituality? We do want ourstudents to be of service-mindedness,patriotic fervour and spiritual splendour.Therefore, we have to inculcate sincerity,service and spirituality in the minds of thechildren during their studenthood. Thisinculcation is despicably branded assaffronisation. Is such an inclucation a

stigma?

Recently in Hyderabad, I had anopportunity to address a gathering of youngboys and girls. The topic allotted to me was“how to influence people”? I tried to elicitreplies from the youth. They said, 1. to getvotes, 2. to win customers, 3. to sell goods,4. to win good-will, 5. to become famous, 6.to gain profits in business, 7. to win love ofgirl friend or boy-friend, and so on. In all theanswers, the common point is selfish interest,profiteering. This is out and out a materialisticoutlook. On the other hand, the reply couldbe spiritual as well. And it would be like, “Sir,if have the ability to influence people, I canmake them patriots. I can make them goodchildren, parents and citizens. The influencedpeople can be made useful to themselves andto the society at large. They can be liberatedfrom the vices, corrupt practices, and self-centeredness. Unless they are brought undermy influence, I cannot be of use to them.Therefore I want to influence people”.

India is a land of spirituality. Spiritualgiants like Buddha, Adi Sankara and a hostof ancient Rishis propagated spirituality forthe benefit of humanity. They gave upownership and kept every wealthy acquisitionat the disposal of the society. They propagatednot selfishness, but self-dedication, lovingservice, and such spiritual giants had put onsaffron robes as a symbol of self-sacrifice,service and trusteeship. Is it not our duty,therefore, to promote saffronisation which isnothing but service and trusteeship?

In one of the Engineering Colleges ofBhopal, I had an opportunity to address theintelligent boys and girls of the final year. Atthe end of the talk, there was a very usefulinteraction. Pleased with their participation,I said “My dear children, I am pleased withyou and therefore I would like to give youeach an A.C. car worth about 20 lakhs. It isfree”. Except one student, everybody washappy to receive it since it is free. Only onestudent said, “Sorry Sir, I don’t want anythingfree. I am a man of self-respect. What I canearn, I cannot accept as a gift from anybody,even if it is from God. I want to stand on myfeet and remain self-reliant. Nachiketa is myideal”.

This is but an Upanishadic thought ofspirituality. Nachiketa, a young boy ofsixteen, was offered rich gifts by Yama, theGod of death, the great Deliverer. The youngboy declined to accept all the offers andremained self-composed. Nothing in lieu ofself-knowledge is acceptable to him. Peopleof self-respect alone can be of spiritual statureand splendour. India is a land of spiritualityand that means Indians are known for theirself-respect. They seek nothing free fromanybody.

But unfortunately, the present daymaterialistic world of consumerism is tryingto make us weak, slaying our self-respect.This trend of weakening consumerism can besuccessfully countered only by spiritualeducation. In every advertisement, we find anexploitation of human weakness for gifts. Ifyou buy a blouse, a saree is free. If you buy a

cat, a cow is free. If you buy one, another100 are free. And the ignorant masses throngthe shops to be exploited. What a fall mycountrymen!.

Do we not want our young boys and girlsto be of self-confidence, self-reliance, self-respect, self-dedication and unselfish inservice? If we want them to be so, spiritualeducation is a must. The symbol for right andrighteous education traditionally is Saffron.

I asked the student how he came to knowabout Nachiketa. He said, “Sir, mygrandfather is not only a freedom fighter, butalso a cultured person, soaked in spirituality.He told me about the Upanishads and theexemplary Upanishadic hero, Nachiketa.Indeed, that Nachiketa is a role model to allthe youth. He is an embodiment of Shraddha.His thirst for knowledge prompted him toknow the highest and the ultimate Truth. Heis not prepared to give up his thirst forknowledge under any circumstances. Notemptation or threat can weaken his resolve.We students should take him as a model fortenacity of purpose and love of knowledge.During tutelage or studenthood, nothingshould divert out attention, nor should anygifts distort our concentration in studies.When Yama wanted to give him freely anygifts instead of knowledge, Nachiketa flatlyrefused. That is why I said ‘no’ when youoffered your A.C. car. When we receive a gift,it amounts to receiving bribe, which iscontrary to the noble ideals of a self-reliantperson. It was this psychic weakness for

luxury that enabled the foreigner to exploitus. We became slaves to the West for many acentury. Even now, we are slaves tomaterialism on account of our infatuation forpleasures and inertia. Like Nachiketa, weshould not only be self-reliant, but shouldrelentlessly strive for the fullest knowledgeof the ultimate Truth. We should not be half-baked scholars. A full-bright scholar is nodoubt a person of blazing spiritual splendour.From the example of Nachiketa, who is amodel character of the Upanishadic age, Iunderstand that spirituality is nothing butawareness of Truth and trusteeship of allincluding our body-mind-intellect equipment.I have not learnt about spirituality in myschool, or college. It is from my grandfather,who has studied our scriptures, that I havelearnt the meaning of life, the goal of life,and the spiritual under-current of life.Nowhere in the present day set up do we havean opportunity to learn about spirituality.Unless India revives her spiritual glory, shecannot once again shine with sublimity”.

The tendency to grab and own everywealth is materialism. The mind-set to give,serve and give up ownership of any wealth –monetary, physical, artistic and intellectual—is spirituality. The earth has enough to fulfileverybody’s need, but not to gratify anybody’sgreed. Every wealth, we are provided with,is to be held as a trust. We are but the trustedcustodians of all wealth. It is spirituality ifone realizes the truth that we cannot andshould not claim ownership. “MaagritaKasyaswiddhanam”, is the Upanishadic

statement. Whatever talent we are born withis to be identified, fostered to perfection andthe perfected talent should be placed at thedisposal of society for the fulfilment of lifeand for the realization of Truth. And that isspirituality. This social spirituality is

symbolically displayed in the saffron colour.Materialism is ignorant possessiveness forsense indulgence. Spirituality is enlightenedtrusteeship for the welfare of one and all.Saffronisation is the ideal of all educationalprocess.

My Vivekananda

In 1985, as S.V.University students, wewent to Vivekananda Kendra, to attend a‘Yoga Camp’ through our N.S.S.Programme.I was in my Graduation course at that time.

It was 20 years back….but that greatincident which changed us is fresh in mymind.

Those days were filled with the spirit ofyouthfulness; its rising tides of hope, andenergy were in me. I was dynamic andenergetic. The days we spent then andafterwards in Vivekananda Kendra weregreat. Still that spirit recharges me, every day.

Vivekananda Kendra had guided us intothe right way and taught us to channelise theyouthful energy in a right direction.

Swami Vivekananda has inspired millionsof people around the globe with his greatmessage.

The majestic voice of Vivekanandachanged many ordinary persons into greatpersonalities. So many others have redefinedtheir way of life and started to live under theinspiring and guiding light of Swamiji.

The roaring voice of Vivekananda…threw out my wickedness and gave me the strength.

-Strength to live in a right way.-Strength to live with tolerance.-Strength to live like a real human being.

How many thoughts, how many gems wereleft by Vivekananda for us….Those words areeverlasting lights of wisdom for humanity.

Vivekananda is only one divine lotus inthe pond full of physical needs…

The age-old Indian way of life says,

mind, and I have no doubt about it. Thisprojects the TRIGUNATMAKA of our Indianphilosophy.

“Truth, purity and unselfishness--whereverthese are present, there is no power below orabove the sun – to crush the possessor thereof.Equipped with these, one individual is ableto face the whole universe in opposition.”

Swamiji warned and advised people tostop fanaticism. The violation of this has beenseen in some parts of the world today, bykillings in the name of religion. So, look atthese words.

“There is a danger of our religion gettinginto the kitchen. We are neither Vedantists,most of us, now, nor pauranics nor Tantrics.We are just “Don’t-touchists”. Our religionis in the kitchen. Our God is the cooking pot,and our religion is “Don’t touch me, I amholy.” If this goes for another century everyone of us will be in a lunatic asylum.”

Purity of thought, ability, grit, are the threeimportant things to achieve a thing. Swamijibeautifully said:

“Nothing shall be done in haste. Puritypatience and perseverance are the essentialsto success and above all, love. All time isyours, there is no indecent haste.

“Every one of you must be a giant – must-- that is my word. Obedience, readiness andlove for the cause. If you have these three,

nothing can hold you back.”

Nowadays, everyone is running behindothers (Western World). That is not proper.Do not ignore your past. It has itsgreatness..About this Swami says….

“But mark you, if you give up thatspirituality leaving aside to go after thematerializing civilization of the west, theresult will be that in three generations youwill become an extinct race, because thebackbone of the nation will be broken..”

One must know his strength. Must livewith enthusiasm, pessimism is not aprogressive one. “The greatest error, says theVedanta, is to say that you are weak, that youare a sinner, a miserable creature, and thatyou have no power and you cannot do thisand that.”

“Strength is life, weakness is death;strength is felicity, life eternal, Immortal,weakness is constant strain, and misery.Weakness is death. Let positive, strong,helpful thoughts enter into your brains fromthe very childhood.” Says Swamiji.

MA. SRI SAMPATH KUMARJI IS NO MORE

Shri S. Sampathkumar, Senior Advocate, Notary Public and Jilla Sanghachalak, SouthChennai, passed away at the ripe age of 80. He was very active till recently and was operatedfor prostrate a couple of months ago. Since then he was hospitalized and passed away inthe morning on 7.1.2007.

He joined the Sangha at a very young age and was regularly taking part in all its activities.

Though deeply religious and traditional by faith, he was equally sociable in his approachand thinking.

He was the Working President of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Tamilnadu and Dr. HedgewarSmarak Samithi, Chennai. He was also a member of the managing committee of VivekanandaKendra, Kanyakumari, since its inception. He used to attend the ABPS baithak at Nagpurfor many years. His presence was always felt both by his ‘appearance’ and precise andforceful speech.

He had thoroughly studied the legal aspect of Ram Janmabhoomi and was the lawyer forHindus in this case. His funeral was attended today by hundreds of Swayamsevaks, friends,relatives and admirers. He leaves behind him his wife, son (S. Kannan, Advocate) and twodaughters.His son’s address:

The Bravest of Indians

The lives of the martyrs, the shining sonsof Bharat Mata who laid down their lives forher honour are a rich afflatus to ordinarypeople who often get highly affected by themundane ambience around them, leading tothe slackening of their patriotic feelings. Thefollowing incidents will suffuse uscompletely with patriotic fervour, so that wecan concentrate our energies towards makingBharat Mata the most prosperous nation inthe world in every field.

1) Jatindranath Mukherjee, one of themost valiant patriots of Bengal, was a greatdevotee of Swami Vivekananda. He was afriend of Swamiji’s younger brotherBhupendranath Datta. When Jatindranath wasvery young, he met Swami Vivekananda onceand was completely mesmerized by hismajestic aura. Jatindranath vowed that hewould dedicate his whole life towardsliberating Bharat Mata from the shackles ofthe British rule.

a) He once entered into a near-mortalcombat with a Royal Bengal tiger and killedit with only a knife. Because of hisindomitable courage, he was given the titleof ‘Bagha Jatin’ (Tiger Jatin). He had a verystrong physique and was an ace wrestler.

b) Once he was waiting at a railwaystation to receive his friend. A person waslying sick on the railway platform and waswrithing with thirst when his cries for waterwere heard by Jatindranath. He ran with atumbler to a nearby tap to bring water for him.While bringing the tumbler filled with water,he collided with four British soliders andsome water spilled on their shirts. The Britishsoldiers got enraged by this affront to theirdignity and started beating Jatindranath witha cane. Jatindranath maintained hiscomposure. First he took the water to the sickman and quenched that man's thirst. Then hecame back and pounced upon those Britishsoldiers and started showering his blows onthem. All the soldier had to lick the dust ofBharat Mata. The spectators present then sawhow a valiant son of India can defend hisdignity and of his motherland from the Asuricbehaviour of those colonial tyrants.

c) Once, while travelling in a railwaytrain, some British soldiers started teasingIndian women in the compartmentJatindranath who was in the samecompartment, could not bear the modesty ofhis sisters getting outraged by thosedegenerate soldiers. He warned them to desistfrom doing so. But those soldiers, instead of

refraining from those nefarious activitiesstarted hurling vituperative epithets on him.Jatindranath could not control his anger anymore. He fought with those soldiers and beatthem black and blue till they took to theirheels at the next station.

d) We shall learn about how Jatindranathlaid down his life, as an offering at the feetof Bharat Mata. Jatindranath had become athorn in the flesh of Britishers. He had killeda number of British police officers who usedto inflict atrocities on the innocent villagers.The British announced a reward of Rs.10,000/- to anybody who would provide informationleading to the arrest of Jatindranath. Finallythey traced him along with his comrades in asmall village, Chasakhand in Balasore districtof Orissa. The village was in a coastal regionand was used by the revolutionaries to acquirethe arms and ammunition which they used tounload from German ships. The Britishsoldiers were equipped with sophisticatedsten guns and outnumbered therevolutionaries, who were having only

carbines. The unequal combat lasted fornearly 3 hours. In spite of their poor resourcesthe revolutionaries did not lose courage. Theyfought like lions and killed a number ofBritish soldiers. Finally the Indianrevolutionaries ran out of ammunition.Jatindranath got wounded and was bleedingprofusely, when he was captured by theBritish. The British soldiers who hadcombated him, got impressed by hisindomitable courage. They fetched water intheir caps for him, as he was very thirsty.

He was admitted in the hospital and hiswounds were bandaged after the surgery. ButJatindanath was a free spirited man and likethe tiger did not want to lead the rest of hislife in captivity. At night unnoticed by anyonehe opened his bandages and bled to death.

Sir Charles Tegart, the superintendent ofpolice, who had led the operation leading tohis capture was visibly moved and gave aglowing tribute to him. “I have met the bravestof Indians”.

Feel, my children, feel; feel for the poor, the ignorant, the downtrodden; feel till the

heart stops and the brain reels and you think you will go mad; then pour the soul

out at the feet of the Lord, and then will come power, help, and indomitable

energy. Struggle, struggle, was my motto for the last ten years. Struggle, still say

I. when it was all dark, I used to say, struggle; when light is breaking in, I still

say, struggle. Be not afraid, my children.

Sri Ramakrishna and His Unique Method of Training

It is so unique of Sri Ramakrishna to haveIntellectuals like Narendra, Spiritualists likeRakhal, Karmayogis like Gangadhar andIlliterates like Latu together, to name a fewin the long list of his disciples whosubsequently formed Sri Ramakrishna Math.It is all amazing. Here are the words of SwamiVivekananda giving us an idea about SriThakur’s unique method of training thedisciples.

Sri Ramakrishna was a wonderful

gardener. Therefore he has made a bouquetof different flowers and formed his Order. Alldifferent types and ideas have come into it,and many more will come. Sri Ramakrishnaused to say, ‘Whoever has prayed to Godsincerely for one day, must come here.’ Knoweach of those who are here - the Sannyasindisciples of Sri Ramakrishna - , to be of greatspiritual power …When they will go out, theywill be the cause of awakening of spiritualityin people. Know them to be part of thespiritual body of Sri Ramakrishna, who wasthe embodiment of infinite religious ideas. Ilook upon them with that eye. See, forinstance, Brahmananda, who is here - even Ihave not the spirituality which he has. SriRamakrishna looked upon him as his mind-born son; and he lived and walked, ate and

slept with him. He is the ornament of our Math- our King. Similarly Premananda, Turiyananda,Trigunatitananda, Akhandananda, Saradananda,Ramakrishnananda, Subodhananda, and others;you may go round the world, but it is doubtfulif you will find men of such spirituality andfaith in God like them. They are each a centreof religious power, and in time that power willmanifest.

Leading towards the Goal…

It is impossible to give others any idea ofthe ineffable joy we derived from the presenceof the Master. It is really beyond ourunderstanding how he could train us, withoutour knowing it, through fun and play, and thusmould our spiritual life. As the masterwrestler proceeds with great caution andrestraint with the beginner, now overpoweringhim in the struggle with great difficulty as itwere, again allowing himself to be defeatedto strengthen the pupil’s confidence - inexactly the same manner did Sri Ramakrishnahandle us. Realizing that the Atman, thesource of infinite strength, exists in everyindividual, pigmy though he might be, he wasable to see the potential giant in all. He couldclearly discern the latent spiritual powerwhich would in the fullness of time manifest

itself. Holding up that bright picture to view,he would speak highly of us and encourageus. Again he would warn us lest we shouldobstruct this future consummation bybecoming entangled in worldly desires, andmoreover, he would keep us under control bycarefully observing even the minute detailsof our life. All this was done silently andunobtrusively. That was the secret of histraining of the disciples and of his mouldingof their lives.

Being one of them…..

The solitude of the Panchavati, associatedwith the various spiritual realisations of theMaster, was also the most suitable place forour meditation. Besides meditation andspiritual exercises, we used to spend a gooddeal of time there in sheer fun and merry-making. Sri Ramakrishna also joined in withus, and by taking part enhanced our innocentpleasure. We used to run and skip about, climbon the trees, swing from the creepers, and attimes hold merry picnics. On the first day thatwe picnicked the Master noticed that I myselfhad cooked the food, and he partook of it. Iknew that he would not take food unless itwas cooked by Brahmins, and therefore I hadarranged for his meal at the Kali temple. Buthe said, ‘It won’t be wrong for me to take foodfrom such a pure soul as yourself.’ In spite ofmy repeated remonstrations, he enjoyed thefood I had cooked that day.

The mild type creates….

Sri Ramakrishna never spoke a harsh wordagainst anyone. So beautifully tolerant was

he that every sect thought that he belonged tothem. He loved everyone. To him all religionswere true. He found a place for each one. Hewas free, but free in love, not in ‘thunder’.The mild type creates, the thundering typespreads….

I see, and you too can see.......

Ramakrishna came to teach the religion oftoday, constructive, not destructive. He hadto go afresh to Nature to ask for facts, and hegot scientific religion, which never says‘believe,’ but ‘see’; ‘I see, and you too cansee.’ Use the same means and you will reachthe same vision. God will come to everyone,harmony is within the reach of all. SriRamakrishna’s teachings are ‘the gist ofHinduism’; they were not peculiar to him. Nordid he claim that they were; he cared naughtfor name or fame.

Encourage......

He never destroyed a single man’s specialinclinations. He gave words of hope andencouragement even to the most degraded ofpersons and lifted them up.

Be and Make…..

Know the truth for yourself, and there willbe many to whom you can teach it afterwards;they will all come. This was the attitude ofmy Master. He criticised no one. For years Ilived with that man, but never did I hear thoselips utter one word of condemnation for anysect. He had the same sympathy for all sects;he had found the harmony between them. Aman may be intellectual, or devotional, or

mystic, or active; the various religionsrepresent one or the other of these types. Yetit is possible to combine all the four in oneman, and this is what future humanity is goingto do. That was his idea. He condemned noone, but saw the good in all.

Intense love…..

The other idea of his life was intense lovefor others. The first part of my Master’s lifewas spent in acquiring spirituality, and theremaining years in distributing it.. . Men camein crowds to hear him, and he would talktwenty hours in the twenty-four, and that notfor one day, but for months and months, untilat last the body broke down under the pressureof this tremendous strain. His intense love formankind would not let him refuse to help eventhe humblest of the thousands who sought hisaid. Gradually there developed a vital throatdisorder, and yet he could not be persuadedto refrain from these exertions. As soon as heheard that people were asking to see him, hewould insist upon having them admitted andwould answer all their questions. When

expostulated with, he replied, ‘I do not care.I will give up twenty thousand such bodies tohelp one man. It is glorious to help even oneman.’

After my father’s death my mother and my

brothers were starving. When the Master metAnanda Guha one day, he said to him,‘Narendra’s father has died. His family is ina state of great privation. It would be good ifhis friends helped him now with money.’ AfterAnanda had left I scolded him. I said, ‘Whydid you say all those things to him?’ Thusrebuked, he wept and said, ‘Alas! For yoursake I could beg from door to door.’ He tamedus by his love.

Struggle…..

There are many things to learn, we muststruggle for new and higher things till we die- struggle is the end of human life. SriRamakrishna used to say, “As long as I live,so long do I learn.”(Compiled from ‘Swami Vivekananda onHimself’)

Dear Friends,

This is our first meet, that too through the medium which uses words and conveys thoughts, the paper andthe ink. But that’s fine initially. Writing letter has been my favorite task from childhood, that too, to same-agers. Though it always waited for the right mood, subject and time! (We are very busy even as a child,isn’t it?!)

So I have decided to write to you all and do reciprocate if and whenever you feel like.

I happened to travel for a long journey almost halfway along the length of Bharat from its corner.

Though, the ways, means, objectives of a journey have changed drastically over the period, its basiccharacter of teaching and showing you newer things remain the same if you keep your senses open. Thiscould have been one reason why our Sanyasis keep travelling.

Once, my teacher was explaining the behaviour of elephants to us. He had stayed for 2 years in the forestsof Mudumalai for his Ph.D. work and had experienced forest in and out. Along with such an opportunity heis blessed with a very logical brain which allows him to see the facts beyond facts. It is always verycharming to hear him and so was that particular discussion about elephants. He was telling, he waspuzzled by the elephants defecating right there in the waterhole where they come to drink water. With thisquestion as fresh as the dung of elephants in mind he was travelling when he got the answer for it. He sawpeople - well educated, learned, sophisticated people - making mess and lot of dirtiness in the railwaycompartments. How could they do it? He wondered. They don’t do such things at home then why inrailway?

The answer was simple but not very straightforward. But his logical brain caught it. People stay in therehouses and they own it but they are there in the railway compartment for a few hours or may be a coupleof days if a long journey is considered. They are not going to suffer with the dirtiness they create there. Andthey are not bothered of others suffering due to it. So their transient state makes them behave like this. Sodo elephants. They also don’t come to the same waterhole again and again and are free to dirty it as theyalso don’t care for their elephant brothers and sisters of other groups neither for other species’ individuals.Their home range is too big of some hundreds of kilometers and they come back to the same placeespecially to the same waterhole only after the dirt of their own night soil has been washed off from there.

But does this allow us to continue our smug behaviour of defiling all the places wherever we reach?

In this travel, for the first time, I successfully denied the paper cups used for tea and coffee. Instead I hadcarried a steel cup with me in which I took the tea or coffee. There had been few futile efforts before. Thosewere futile for reasons as simple as forgetting to bring out the cup when the tea-wala comes or even beingembarrassed in a group of people to do such an odd act. But this time I could overpower everything. I wasalone but there were co – passengers, who after observing me for long enough time asked me, why do I dothat? I said to minimize waste which is not degradable or less degradable and might take hundreds ofyears to go back to the cycle of nature. One of them immediately said, ‘do you go to toilet?’ I was notstupid to understand his intention and explained that it’s my need and to continue living I will have to gothere every morning.

Also told him the great words of Mahatma saying, there is enough for everybody’s need but not enough foreven one’s greed. Then another amongst them had a point. ‘But every time you refuse a cup and take thetea, the tea-wala will get extra 5 rupees as their hisab is by cups used.’

‘That’s right but, I think it’s fine if a person is getting extra money due to his own dishonesty for some days.Once the management realizes that many are following this method then they would also change anderadicate this money problem.’ Money problems are man made which will remain till our minds are notclean but some problems are awareness and consciousness problems which can be removed physically.Of course it requires a subtle, sensitive mind which realizes that ‘akhanda mandalakaram vyaptai yencharacharm’ and tries to keep ‘vasudha ka kalyan’ as its first priority that not only includes humans but allliving and non-livings.

Let’s stop here for the time being.

However, to my knowledge (asper the Panchangam I follow) Margashirshahad passed on and Pousha was set in on21s t December. Af ter gree t ing ShivaSwarupananda, I disclosed my wish toknow more about the Essence of BhagawadGita. He smiled and said, “That is whatexactly these festivities are meant for.” Hepointed his finger at the banner at the gateof the hall. I begged for explaining further.“Sri Krishna tells to the hero-Arjuna, inVibhuti Yoga-10th chapter of the Gita abouthis pervading the creation. Among otherthings Sri Krishna says, Among all themonths of the year I am the Margashirshamonth . I f i t i s so , then how toexperience or realize this closeness?” Igave further vent to my curiosity, “How thisentertainment-sangeet programmes anddance dramas , (popular ly known asDecember Katcheri season in the South)can lead us to that?”. Shiva Swarupanandadirected me to sit by his side, indicatingthat his reply will be an elaborate one.“This Sangeet and Natya are not forentertainment. They are meant for comingcloser to God. The Ultimate Truth is Sat,Chit, Ananda as told in our scriptures. Thisis expressed in two forms – Rupa andShabda – involving our two faculties – eyesfor the Rupa and ears for the Shabda. Thesetwo are integrated by the limbs and thevoice of the performers respectively. Thenthe Chitta of the performer and the Chittaof viewer and listeners get tuned and whentheir frequencies match, Ananda pervadesthe whole environment that is Cosmicchitta of the Para Purusha . This ParaPurusha is explained in the scriptures bythe saints, scholars and maha bhaktas asNataraja and Narayana. And the ParaPrakr i t i p rompts to mani fes t the i rexpressions in performing arts, poems and

spiritual literature. Natya and Sangeet inour culture is not just an entertainment buta Sadhana to experience the oneness withthe Divine. That is why the subjects in allthese programmes whether Kuchipudi orBhara ta Natya schools of dance , andwhether Hindustani or Carnatic Sangeet,are Sadhana to experience God, Nataraja-Shiva, Maha Vishnu and Parashakti-devi,so on and so forth.”

Pointing out to the banner at the gate, Iasked “What is the significance of thesewords?” Koodiyirundhu KulirndheloreEmbaavai”? (Wake up with us for the coolbath, O! dear girl! Embavai).

Apart from thesepeople, who have given decades of theirlife to Bharata Natyam, there are youthfulStalwart Gurus like Smt.Sujata Mohan andSmt.Deepa Balaji . Besides, there arepeople l ike Sr i Kuld ip Pa i and Sr iAdityanarayana who give more precedenceto these performing arts over their normalprofessional commitments. You may askwhy I am telling the names of all thesepersons. There is always a clamour of dinby our cultures’ detractors that we Hindussing the glory of the past only and as ontoday we are a b ig zero . ShivaSwarupananda continued, “Let me also tellyou, this sytem is not narrow-minded,closing their doors for new approaches. Noone asks your cas te or na t iona l i ty. Iwi tnessed two programmes in whichJapanese and Sinhali students performedwith all sincerity and earnestness. Theywere well received and appreciated. century, Sri Kodhai Nayaki – popularlyknown as Sr i Andal (meaning LadyVaishnava saint). She is one of the twelveAlwars in the Vaishnav Sampradaya. Shehad composed 30 poems of eight lines each.The poems are describing her realizationof Sri Maha Vishnu – Sri Krishna, to be inpar t icu la r. These poems are ca l ledThiruppavai and considered very sacred. Inthis Margazhi festival each day one poemis sung in seriatum and discoursed byscholars in temples and other public places,a t tended by lo t s o f t ami l knowingpopulation – in and out of Tamil Nadu.Through this particular Bharata Natyaba l le t , the Thi ruppavai poems arejuxtaposed to the values and qualit iesattributed to Sri Krishna in particular, like,Karuna , Sahas , Shourya , Kar tu tva ,Samatva, Vijigishu Vritti, Nayakatva andMaitri. Incidents from the Life of Avatarasare enacted by young artistes within theframework and rules of Bharat NatyaShastra”. While Shiva Swarupanda pausedfor a breath I asked “But why the NatyaShastra? – can i t not be done by justdramas, songs or TV shows etc.”….

Bharata Natyam or Kathakali, demandspurity and discipline and self-culturing.The values enacted are performed throughthe body, mind and in te l lec t . Theperformers learn to co-ordinate with theJatis of the Guru’s words and tinklingsound of the cymbal called Natu Vangom.The song sung by the singer, rhythumpattern given on the mrindagam and Swarasof other accompaniments – like Violin,Flute and Veena. Apart from this the dancerhas to depict Mudras, Bhava, Abhinaya,and rhythmic graceful movements oflimbs. The dancer is fully engrossed withthe ideas of the Kritis – Kaya-Vacha andManas, so much so that he or she imbibesthose values, and, the values are reflectedin their normal conduct, off the stage also.“Wait a minute”, I interrupted, “you saidthat all these performers belong to younggenerations and the extent of efforts youare telling demands lot of time; then arethese young persons doing only this or…?”

This time Shiva Swarupanda snapped inand said, “they are all students also – notjust s tudents but bri l l iant s tudents ofworthy schools and colleges. I happened totalk to some of them and their parents also.The parents are offer ing a l l poss ib lesupport to the students. One parent – father,told me that after learning this Natyam hisdaughter developed very systematic way instudying, conducting herself in house andher interaction with elders and peers wasvery much exemplary. The practice helpsthem to maintain good health. None of them

neglects their academic commitments. Noone absents from the schools or classes.Quite a few of them come to rehersals withstudy books and use the intermittent breaksin the rehersal for studying, write examnext day and get good marks.

The father of a performer told me thathis 5 years old daughter wrote an eight pageanswer sheet without a single scratch orcorrection in the answer sheet. Some ofthese school authori t ies are thereforeencouraging the i r s tudents to learn ,practice and perform these Natya andSangeet shastras”. I nodded and said, “InVivekananda Kendra we seek to raisecul tura l l eve l o f the Youth-SamuhikSamskar through our Karya Paddhati. Weseek to bring in disciplene, cultivatingtalents for creative and innovative thinking,dynamic leadership, winning instinct. Fromwhat you are telling, it appears that the goalof our ancient thinkers and approach of theKendra is in perfect tune”. I added

“But now a days by and large the worldof art and artist is understood as, that, theyare irregular in their life style, they areaddicted to something or other, theyneglect or are averse of discharging theirduties. Quite a few of the performers arewhimsica l , they brandish the i r ownmanner ism and ges tures , in walking ,talking, eating, dressing and behaving. Bylooking at these heroes and heroines,people at large also copy these eccentricsand misbehave with all the people around.

They take pride in a personality and adopttheir all undesirable patterns also.” ShivaSwarupananda smiled and said, “In ourtradition art is an expression of God – kala.Rishis like Bharata Muni and others havecodified the gestures i.e. Mudras – facial,fingers, arms and body. They communicatetheir thoughts and feelings with thesegestures efficiently and beautifully. It isdone without pronouncing a single word ina process. It is called Sanchari. Sancharisare choreographed carefully. Though a lotof freedom is there for the choreographer,the basics are not allowed to be violated.The uniqueness of choreography is not in“revol t ing” agains t these es tabl i shedpatterns but in using the rules of the gamewith full creativity. Some of these danceschools have developed their uniquness,adding as though a flavour of the ‘Saffron’to the milk without spoiling its inherentpurity and piousness. None of these schoolshate or look down on each other but sharetheir perceptions adding to the existingglory of the Natya Shastra.

These utsavas are not Secular’ in theircontent but are fully Spiritual. Thereforeno scope for promoting lust , greed orsensual feeling in the minds of the viewers.All the performers are fully clad, ratherdressed in modesty and beauty. They reflectthe Soundarya and Aishwarya--Beauty andRichness of God, whereas the artists, youare refering to, are having a ridiculousequation – Lesser the one wears, better theperformance. They have to develop the

mannerism because they do not have anygenuine skill and creativity to show. Theyare not prepared for hard work. They resortto cut-throat competition and elbow outothers to reach front line. Hollownesswithin has to be forgotten, therefore, bysome or other addiction. Themes andsubjects chosen for the performances arefamily confl ic ts , discordance, mutualmisunders tanding and sk i l l inmanupulating the basal feelings like lust,g reed and sensua l p leasure . Theseperformances will have a negative effecton the minds of the masses. 90% of thethemes of the dramas / episodes on the TVshows are based on violence, mistrust, lackof mutua l fa i th and unders tanding ,eulogising the villainous tendencies, crime,depress ion and f rus t ra t ion .” ShivaSwupananda stopped and looked at me forresponse.

“Then, don’t you think such spirituallybased dramas should be propagated throughmodern communication facilities? Youcannot reach masses by moving place toplace with a troupe of 30 artists, eachprogramme being witnessed by a maximumof 2000 people— a miniscule of the vastmasses to whom the ideas should reach”, Iasked.

“Well!”, smiled Shiva Swrupananda andsaid “effor ts are on. This medium ofSangeet and Natya is used by many wellmeaning people, not only by Tamilians inTamilnadu. Every state of our Nation has

galaxies of the saints, poets, singers, andperformers. They only have been doing thisLoka Shikshan and Loka Sanskar throughmany names and forms in the nooks andcorners of Bharat. But as you say there isa need to blend our traditional skills withmodern methods of communication formaking a strong impact. These ideas mustreach at least one percent of the nation’sadult population. Then the remaining 99%wil l be led by these 1% enl ightened,godward and creative minori ty. ShivaSwarupananda smiled as usual and wasleaving. I suddenly remembered my wishand asked, “I wanted to know about theessence of Bhagwad Gita but…?”

“Well! This is one way of Living theEssence of the Gita. Spread positive ideas,and culture as God is with (in) us.

“But then as you have sa id , th i sMargazhi Utsav will conclude on 15thJanuary; then what?

Shiva Swarupananda gave his usualenlightening smile and said, “Let us realise

Sri Krishna in the Margazhi, then he willbe with us always. And when we retain thisSri Krishna experience we will be alwaysin the Margzhi - in all the places and at allthe times. It is no supersition with you, I am sure, you have the making in you of a world-mover, and others willalso come. Bold words and bolder deeds are what we want. Awake, awake, great ones! The world is

burning with misery. Can you sleep? Let us call and call till the sleeping gods awake, till the god withinanswers to the call. What more is in life? What greater work? The details come to me as I go. I never make

VKIC GUWAHATIAs a part of Samartha Bharat Parva and onthe occasion of Kalpatru Diwas a one day nonresidential shibir. ‘Kutambakam’, for familieswas held on 1st January to propagate themessage of strengthening the existing moralfabric prevalent in our families. 19 familiesenthusiastically participated in it. The Shibiraimed at disseminating nationalconsciousness and propagating the messageof Bhagwad Gita. The different aspects ofBharateeya Samskriti such as hospitality toguests (Atitho devo Bhava), Suryanamaskar,singing of devotional songs, moral stories forchildren constituted the Shibir. Shri RaviNaidu and Sushri Sujatha Nayak spoke‘Relevance of the Gita in our daily lives’ and‘Importance of Sankalpa’ respectively. Thefamilies responded very enthusiastically tothe Shibir and took an oath at the feet ofBharat Mata, that they will adhere topractising Bharateeya Samskriti in theirhomes.

Dr Smt Lakshmi Naryani addressed the needof social responsibility in the youth. Sheemphasised the role of youth in nationalprogress and representing our culture.
