Spelling Out Your Card

The trick: When an audience member picks a random card you spell out their card and it magically appears. How to do the trick: Before you tell the audience member to pick a card take a quick glance at the bottom card of the deck. Pretend it is the queen of diamonds. When they pick their card lay out six piles telling them to put it on top of any pile at all. Like on the picture on the right. Remember which pile the queen of diamonds is on. When they do so put the deck together again but make sure that the bottom card (the queen of diamonds) that you memorized is put on top of the card the audience member chose. If the audience member puts their card on the pile, that

has the card that you have memorized. Cut each deck in half and then put all the piles together. Again, make sure you have put the card you have memorized on top of the demonstrators’ card. Now tell the audience you are going to flip the cards over in just different random piles although it isn’t quite random. Which is the picture on the left. When you are flipping it all over look for the card that you have memorized (the queen of diamonds). As soon as you see it start a new pile because the card after the queen of diamonds will be the spectator’s

card since you put the queen of diamonds on top of it. Look at that card and in the next pile spell out that card. In this case their card is the two of diamonds. So in the next pile you would spell out T-W-O O-F D-I-A-M-O-N-D-S When you have flipped all the cards over put them back together but make sure the pile the pile you spelled out the card in is on top of the spectator’s card and on top of the whole deck. When the spectator tells you their card everything will be in place. So when you spell out their card it will show up. T-W-O O-F H-E-A-R-T-S and there’s their card.

The Unbreakable Toothpick! The magician shows a magical toothpick and the audience checks it out. The magician covers it with a magical handkerchief, and the audience hears the snapping sound of the toothpick. Snap! The toothpick breaks, and the magician now do her/his magic. Her/his hand trembles, then asks the audience to blow on the hanker chief. Slowly, the magician opens the hanker chief. Magically, the toothpick is not broken! Materials:

• Hanker chief • 2 toothpicks (A and B)

Secret steps:

1. Right before your magic show, secretly put the A toothpick in the middle of a

hanker chief. Then fold it perfectly, so then your audience won’t notice that the hanker chief is folded.

2. At your magic show, you have to act well, or else your audience won’t believe you. Tell them that you have a magical toothpick (that would be toothpick B) and it can’t break. Cover toothpick B, and make everyone be quiet. Snap toothpick A, but don’t snap toothpick B. If they are quiet, they will hear the snapping noise.

3. Then, act that you are concentrating really hard to put the ‘broken’ toothpick

back together. Also, ask an audience to blow on it. Gradually, open the hanker chief and the toothpick is not broken.

The Magic Stretching Paper

Materials: 1.) Two slips of paper 2.) One red 3.) One yellow; each curved and the same size-see in the picture. How to do it: To complete this trick, the first thing that you do is place the two slips of paper on a desk or table. Put the yellow on the bottom, and the red on the top. (It doesn’t really matter, but it is better to be organized.) Get a volunteer, and ask he or she which slip is bigger. They will tell you that the red is larger, so you take the yellow paper and pretend to stretch it. Then, put it to the right of the ‘big’ yellow paper. Voila! It will appear larger than the yellow paper! Now put the yellow one to the right of the red---it will now appear bigger. You can do this as many times as you want to amaze your audience. The Trick: The trick is that there is no trick! The whole thing is just an illusion! Since both of the pieces of paper are curved, one side of each is larger than the other side. When you put the two papers next to each other, one of them has a side that is bigger than the other, so making the other paper seem smaller. When you move the one that seems big to the other side of the ‘small’ one, you are putting its small side next to the other’s big side. This makes it seem smaller than the other one. In reality, the red and the yellow papers are both the same size. By: Riena Harker

Drama magic card trick Take all the 8’s out of the deck. Place one on top of the deck. Put another one in the 9th position from the deck cards facing down. From the deck cards facing up put the other two 8’s in the 8 and 9 or 7 and 8 positions.

Now say that you will pick a random card having the deck face down. Pick the 9th position 8. Then do not show it yet but say it is your prediction card and lay it down on the table.

Flip the deck over then as your dealing them tell them the instructions. While you are saying the instructions you see that you passed the double eights or it will not work.

Now you have two piles tell them to pick a pile. If they pick the left pile show the first card it should be eight. If they pick the opposite pile say that you will show the left piles first card and pick eight cards out from the pile they picked.

Now ask the demonstrator to flip all the top cards. They should all be eights, so your predication was right.

Page 12: Magic book 2010 - 1

The Impossible Mind Reader… 1. Take any 21 cards out of a 52-card deck. 2. Lay out the cards, 3 across and 7 down facing down. 3. When you turn your back to the audience, have them choose a card. 4. Then, ask them to tell which column his/her card is in.

5. Carefully pick up each card by the three columns and make sure that the column he/she tells you picked up second and ends up in the middle in the combined pile. 6. Lay out the cards again in the same way, but this time facing up. Make sure you do this row by row. 7. Ask the volunteer where the card is now. 8. Pick up the rows again (second time),

like before making sure the row with their card is in the middle of the deck. 9. Lay them out again, the same way as before. 10. The card will be the card in the middle if you perform this correctly. (There are many alternations to this trick and it can be varied in many ways such as the ending. This trick can also be performed with nine cards. )

The Scarf Trick 1. Get a scarf or a rope and put it around your neck. Make the left side of the scarf longer than the right.

2. Make your hands into a cross. Make your right hand grab the left side of the scarf up high. Then, your left hand is going to grab the right side of the scarf but below your left hand.

3. Make your right hand go over to the right hand side of your body and your left hand, go up around your head. This wraps the scarf around your neck. At the back of your neck you will have a little knot.

4. When you try to pull the scarf off your neck the first time it doesn’t come off. When you do it the second time it does and when you pull the scarf the knot undoes itself.

TheMagicColorPredictionMaterials needed: Green, yellow, and red cards A small envelope A big envelope Small piece of scrap paper Marker An audience to be amazed! Instructions: Place the 3 cards on the table. Make sure you don’t show the back because there is a trick to it. Place the big envelope next to these three cards. Turn around and ask for a volunteer. Ask this volunteer to choose any color card they like but don’t tell the magician. When they’ve picked it, turn around and say, “I knew you would choose that one!” Then, prove it by doing one of the following things in the trick.

The Trick: The magician actually doesn’t know what color you picked, because you already have the answer ready for the volunteer. On the back of the yellow and green card write “You will not pick this color.” On the back of the red card write “You will choose this color.” If the volunteer picks the red card, all you have to do is show them the writing. In the big envelope, place the smaller envelope. On top of the smaller envelope write, “You will choose the yellow card.” On the scrap piece of paper write, “You will choose the green card.” Now place this scrap piece of paper inside this smaller envelope. If they pick red, you flip the yellow and green cards first and then the red. If they choose the yellow card, you open up the big envelope and show the front side of the smaller envelope. If they choose the green card, open up the big and the small envelope and it will say the words, “You will choose the green card.” Prepare for the audience to be amazed! By: Kajol Parwani

Vanishing Pen Materials:

• A pen or pencil • A handkerchief that can fully cover up

your hand *Note: You will need to wear long sleeves to do this trick. Step 1) Hold your pen/pencil and handkerchief so that everyone can see that it is not a trick pen/pencil and handkerchief. Or even pass it around the audience. Step 2) Hold the pencil, so that it is sticking up. Then carefully and slowly cover that hand with the handkerchief. But while covering it up, instead of the pen sticking up let the forefinger stick up. Let your other hands hold on to the pen (Do not let the audience members see this). Step 3) Now your hand is covered with the handkerchief (and your forefinger is sticking up). Slowly slip or drop the pen, through and in the sleeves. Do it without much motion so that the audience will not see and so they will not get suspicious. Practice a lot and go over the steps. All through this step do not move your forefinger. Step 4)

After you have successfully slipped your pen into your sleeve, leave your forefinger standing and pull of the handkerchief. During that time, quickly hide back your forefinger, and so that your hand is shaped like a fist. Now, the audience may stare in wonder and in curiosity.
