NE1 Newcastle Motor Show, the UK’s largest free open-air city centre motoring event, returns on July 8 & 9, bringing with it a festival atmosphere and masses to see and do.

Lloyd Newcastle BMW is the new Dealer Partner for the event and will showcase showstoppers from BMW’s national headquarters.

Dubbed the ‘Goodwood of the North’, the show will bring show-stopping cars and entertainment to more than two square miles of the city with themed zones for supercars, rally and racing cars, and rare vehicles lining Grey Street.

More than 104,000 people attended last year, and this year will be even bigger. getintonewcastle.co.uk

The story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar has delighted generations of youngsters since it was published in 1969. Now this timeless children’s classic is making its way off the page and onto the stage. Featuring a menagerie of 75 puppets, the caterpillar is joined by three of Eric Carle’s other favourite tales; The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse, Mister Seahorse, and The Very Lonely Firefly. A treat. Northern Stage, £9.50 children/£12.50 adults northernstage.co.uk

The much talked-about Yolo Townhouse has opened to much attention in High Bridge, offering up three floors of food, drink and social spaces, including an open-air terrace bar. Owned by the folks behind Hadrian’s Tipi, which is set to return this summer, Yolo Townhouse is open from 8am until late daily, serving up food and drink all day and late into the night.Yolo Townhouse, yolotownhouse.com

Lies and long-held grudges abound in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, with Imelda Staunton utterly engrossing in her portrayal of Martha. She and her long-suffering husband George (Conleth Hill) have a playful but bitter relationship which takes a cruel turn when new neighbours move in. The play comments on society’s expectations of married couples and what can happen when they don’t meet those lofty standards. See it live from the National Theatre. Fancy a G&T but not sure where to find the best in town? Or new to the city and need to know where to find the best live music? A new app called Tipll now offers up a guide to Newcastle for everyone - local, tourist, student, family, social visitor or corporate - providing options using augmented reality which you can use to create routes you can keep private or share with the world. tipll.co.uk

Wickedly gruesome and darkly surreal, Arthur Pita’s double bill at Dance City is

double trouble. Stepmother leads us into a world where familiar fairytales distort into nightmares, while Stepfather tells the tale of

a twisted family inspired by the folk punk Country

Death Song from cult US band Violent Femmes. Unmissable.

Screen returns Now an essential part of summer in Newcastle, NE1 is bringing back its huge outdoor cinema screen in the heart of the city at Old Eldon Square. This year, there will be numerous screenings, including live relays from the Royal Opera House of La Traviata and Turandot.getintonewcastle.co.uk/ne1-events/screen-on-the-green

Thank you for the music

Becky Unthank fronts Mercury-nominated North East folk group The Unthanks with her elder sister Rachel. Here she is, ahead of the band’s date at the Theatre Royal when they will perform the songs of Molly Drake; mother of the influential songwriter Nick Drake. Is there sibling rivalry? No, it’s a bit sickly, but I’ve always looked up to Rachel.Your parents are folk singers; did you ever feel like rebelling? We’re really close. They took us to festivals, where there’s no divide between audience and performer and you realise that if you want to be a singer, you can. What drew you to Molly Drake’s work? It’s the way she sees the human condition and the struggle between light and dark, how dream and reality are both important. I felt immediately connected to it.Do you hate being pigeonholed? I’m proud to be a folk singer, but we’re just music lovers in general. You and Rachel live in the North East. Where can we find you when you’re in Newcastle? We’re definitely drawn to the Ouseburn. We still do clog dancing at the Cumberland Arms!Theatre Royal, May 14, £23.50 theatreroyal.co.uk

New age When: May 12

Taking the Micky When: May 11

Are you 16, but feel 21? 40, but tragically faking 25? Or maybe you’re 80 with the heart of three oxen and the sex drive of a bonobo chimp. Don’t worry, says Russell Kane in Right Man, Wrong Age - this is normal because no one is ever the right age. A blisteringly funny performance about the art of growing up and growing down.Tyne Theatre and Opera House, £17 tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk

Love him or hate him, Jimmy Carr has been a major star for 15 years, gathering material along the way. Now, he’s set to perform some of his greatest hits and new material at what is being billed as the ultimate comedy show. Prepare for laughter and horror in equal measure.City Hall, £30 theatreroyal.co.uk

He’s one of the country’s most successful stand-ups, but Micky Flanagan recently took a couple of years out of the spotlight to reflect on his life. Now, he’s back with An’ Another Fing at Metro Radio Arena, following his Back In The Game tour in 2013 which sold a whopping 500,000 tickets. Time to see if he’s still the man of the comedy moment…Metro Radio Arena, from £30.25, metroradioarena.co.uk

Andy Zaltzman is back at The Stand with his Plan Z - a bid to tell us whether the planet is heading for preservation or perdition. In a show which takes in national identity, hope, fear and live action democracy, he addresses such issues as body surfing and the confusion caused by modern global politics. The Stand, £12, thestand.co.uk

Part comedy sketch show and part music quiz, the Mixtape team return with their hilarious bite-sized theatre inspired by music, delivered via sketches based on song lyrics. Bring a team and guess what songs inspired the sketches to be in with a chance of winning the highly coveted Golden Mixtape trophy. This time, it’s all about the 90s. Live, £10, live.org.uk

Funny Girl When: May 16 to 20Fresh from a record-breaking West End run, Olivier Award-winning Sheridan Smith takes to the stage at the Theatre Royal as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. Here’s more…

On heading north: “It’s really important for theatre to look outwards and not just be centred around London.”

On getting into character: “I researched the real Brice. She was gutsy, funny, she played to her strength and had no vanity.”

On Twitter trolls: “Come say your s*** to my face and see what happens.”

On meeting her idols: “I got tongue-tied meeting Cilla and was too starstruck to take up her offer of ringing her anytime.”

On her personal life: “I’m so grateful for what I’ve been given and it’s hard to give that up and say now I’m going to settle down and have a family and be a little wifey.”

On the buzz of a live audience: “They laugh with you, they cry with you, and by the end you’ve gone through a washing machine of emotions.”

On her inspirations: “Strong women who do comedy and drama like Julie Walters, Maggie Smith and Kathy Burke.”

On an alternative career: “I’d have worked with animals, 100%. I love dogs.”

It’s back! Dacia’s Magic Weekend, co-sponsored by NE1, is returning to St James’s Park for a third year, promising two days of family entertainment with a fantastic carnival atmosphere in and around the stadium.

The weekend is the only chance rugby fans have to see all Betfred Super League’s biggest derby matches across one weekend in one venue.

It’s the best showcase of Rugby League in the country for old fans, new fans and anyone who fancies a great day out, and once again fans from across the country are expected to flock to Newcastle to watch 12 top teams face off.

And the excitement continues off the pitch with fans being

DACIA MAGIC WEEKENDWHEN: MAY 20& 21

treated to the Fan Zone on both Saturday and Sunday, providing entertainment, player interviews, official merchandise and fantastic food vendors.

The exciting showpiece was first hosted in Newcastle in 2015, with more than 68,000 fans attending in two days last year, the biggest number in the event’s history.

Magic Weekend is worth an estimated £8m to the city and huge crowds are set to descend for the matches this year and spend their cash in city centre bars, restaurants and businesses, providing a huge boost to the local economy.

A highlight of the sporting and entertainment calendar, it’s unmissable...

Prof Brian Cox When: May 13He looks more like a pop star than a scientist (probably because he once was a pop star) but Prof Brian Cox has forgotten more than we will ever know. Now he’s set to bring his own brand of astronomical magic to Metro Radio Arena, taking us on a journey through space and time. Here are a few things you might not have known about everyone’s favourite particle physicist...

Before turning to academia, Cox was a keyboard player for the bands D:Ream and Dare.

He got a D in A-level maths, which he says taught him the life lesson that practice makes perfect.

In 2009, he was named one of People Magazine’s Sexiest Men Alive.

His son George’s middle name is Eagle, for the Apollo 11 lunar module.

He thinks Brexit is bad for science and for education as a whole.

If he could say anything to Donald Trump, he’d read an essay by Richard Feynman, which points out that the road to understanding starts with humility.

He has 2.55m Twitter followers, and isn’t afraid to speak his mind.

But the main reason he’s selling out arena tours is because he makes us remember that the universe is an awe-inspiring place.Metro Radio Arena, from £33 metroradioarena.co.uk
