Established by Mrs. Anita Crasnich Tavasani in memory of her son Carlo, the “Carlo Tavasani” Piano Competition is now know as the “Nikolaus De la Flüe” Com-petition.

This year’s 16th edition will continue to be inspired by the vision of Mrs. Tavasani, however sponsoring resources will shift from the Carlo Tavasani family, the small town of Sacile and other friends in Italy, to the Association Friends of the Magnificat in Switzerland. As a sign of continuity, the Competition will be organized during the month of January.

Nikolaus de la Flüe was born on March 21, 1417, on the Flueli, a fertile plateau near Sachseln, Canton Obwal-den, Switzerland;; He died on March 21, 1487, as a recluse in a neighboring ravine, called Ranft. At the age of 21 he entered the army and in 1446, he took part in the battle of Ragaz. About the age of 25, he heeded the advice of his parents and got married to a pious girl from Sachseln, named Dorothy Wyssling. They bore five sons and five daughters. Though averse to worldly dignities, he was elected cantonal councilor and judge. After living approximately twenty-five years in Wedlock, he listened to an inspiration of God and with the consent of his wife;; he left his family on October 16, 1467, to live as a hermit. In 1468, his prayers saved the town of Sarnen from a conflagration. Distinguished persons from nearly every country of Europe came to him for counsel in matters of the utmost importance. In 1480, when delegates of the Swiss confederates assembled at Stans to settle their differ-ences, and civil war seemed inevitable, Henry Imgrund, the pastor of Stans, hastened to Nicholas, begging him to prevent the shedding of blood.Brother Klaus said: “Do not make the fence too far” (Don’t occupy the terri-tories of other people);; and: “Do not mix in other people’s affairs”.
