The coming Spring sailing season will be full of opportunities to partici- pate in learning about Race Committe jobs. The Vice Commodore, Scott Harwell is eager to help you lern how to put on sailing races! Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season and a very happy beginning to 2018. The incredible cold that started this new year has caused quite a few prob- lems around the club but hopefully we've gotten them taken care of and will be getting back to our normal winter weather soon. I want to take this time to welcome our new committee members elected last month and Thank You for taking the time to serve the club. We will be holding a Town Hall meeting on January 23 at 6:30 with the Finance Committee; they have been looking at the future of FYC as we near the membership cap of 650. Some deci- sions will have to be made and we feel as members you need to be involved, so please plan to attend and receive the information first hand. As always we are extremely proud of our Juniors who attend the Orange Bowl Regatta, its an amazing event. The Auxiliary's Chili Cook Off is the end of this month; it’s a lot of fun, so sign up to cook or just come for the chili and support The Auxiliary. I would like to encourage everyone as a New Year's resolution to get more involved. Make this the year that you join a work party or help with a regat- ta. Just make that step to find a new niche; we have so make talented peo- ple at our club and there is always something you can do to help. I hope everyonehad a wonderfulHoliday Season! Ihad the honor oftraveling down toMiami for theOrange BowlRegatta with sever-al of our Lasersailors. It was a

fantastic event to attend withapproximately 600 youth fromaround the world competing inthe USA’s largest youth event. While we didn’t bring home anysilver, we did have some promis-ing finishes with several racesfrom our sailors. Attending the

event for FYC were, Sara Boyd,Parker French, Chandler Taloney,Camille and Pete McGriff.

Our high school and advanceOptimist team will return to prac-tice mid-January to prepare forthe spring season. The high schoolwill be working on boat handlingskills along with preparing for thespring team racing events. Ouroptimist team will be training forUSODA Gulf Coast Championshipwhich FYC will host in March.

This is the last event of the sea-son for optimist sailors to qualifyfor the 2018 Team Trials whichplaces sailors on the USA interna-tional teams. You will be able to find the datesfor summer camp online by theend of the month, there will be adrop box that you can enter your

email address and we will notifyyou the day summer camp regis-trations opens. We will also haveour Bay Buddy Camp again thissummer, as much fun as this wasfor the children, the instructorshad a blast working with thisgroup.

Junior Commodore’s Report

Junior Honor Award Winners

The newest honoree for the Boat Cohen awardis Emily Allen. As a first-year sailor, Emily hastaken sailing camp, served as a CIT in summersailing, sailed with the high school sailing teamand gotten her own Optimist. She has partici-pated in Green fleet clinics all fall. We look for-ward to watching Emily continue to grow as asailor and active participant in the Junior pro-gram.

Chandler Taloney started just three years agoin summersailing learn-ing how to sail. That summer,he found a pas-sion for a sportthat has con-tinued to grow.

This year Chandler has sailedGulf Coast Championships,Midwinter‘s, USODA Nationalsand Team trial qualified in hisOptimist. In addition, he hasbegun sailing Lasers, served asa CIT at summer sailing, andis on the Fairhope High School

team. His excitement about the sport and com-petitive nature will take him far and we lookforward to great things from Chandler.

Hello members! I’m happy to saythat I was voted the JuniorCommodore this past month and Iwill now be following after myolder sister as she heads to collegein the fall. December has been a

busy month as a few junior Lasershave been training for OrangeBowl in Miami, which is one of thelarger Laser regattas of the year. While I was in Miami from the20th-24th training before theevent in the Atlantic, most of thecompetition showed up for a prac-tice day in the 26th followed by 4days of challenging racing inBiscayne Bay. The venue isfamous for being a tactical night-mare for sailors, so our sailorslearned a lot and had lots of funduring racing. Coming up inJanuary our junior programshould be fairly stagnant due tolack of regattas and cold weather, while I will be back in SouthFlorida for the Atlantic CoastChampionships on the 13th. Ihope to see you on the water thismonth!

IT CAN’T BE A NEW YEAR WITHOUT A PARTY!!!

The New Year bringsour old friend

Hypothermia again!Now that the cold

weather is here, we should be pre-

pared to deal with hypothermia.

There are more that 1200 deaths

per year from hypothermia in the

US. The Bay water temperature

was 54°F this week and at that

temperature, hypothermia can

occur in 1 hour and death in 1 to

6 hours.Hypothermia can be divided into

mild, moderate and severe stagesbased on body temperature. Themild state is a temperaturebetween 98-95° and can be treat-ed without professional help.Symptoms of the mild phaseinclude shivering, clumsy hands, exhaustion and slurred speach.Treatment is to get the person toa warm place, remove wet clothes, wrap their entire body in blanketsor a sleeping bag, and administerwarm coffee or tea with sugar.Keep the person covered untiltheir body tempreature is above98°F.

For moderate to severe stages.Call 911, as this is a true medicalemergency. At this level, the per-son will have quit shivering; they

may be disoriented and may besemi-conscieous and confused. Asthe body temperature drops to 85°or lower, death may occur. Whilewaiting for help to arrive, treatthe person the same as above,ExCEpT do not give any liquids.

please know where the nearest

dock ladder is to your boat andmake sure that you can climb it.Consider placing a quick releaseladder on your boat such as theSafeUp shown by David Barr.Keep a body thermometer, warmblanket or sleeping bag and a setof dry clothes on your boat.

Start the New Year with anEmergency Boat Ladder

As boaters, we have all heard the stories ofpeople finding themselves not able to re-board their vessel after swimming or takinga fall overboard. This is situation is a par-ticularly dangerous prospect for a ‘single-hand’ skipper.

Although our boats might appear relativelyuser-friendly for boarding, that view can bequite daunting from the waterline, lookingup. That thought, and hearing a few unfor-tunate stories, prompted me to shop for a

deployable emergency ladder that could be left in place and easilyaccessed by an overboard sailor, especially in a ‘single-hand’ scenario.

Emergency deployable ladders come in a variety of configurationsfrom rope and slat type ladders to bag ladders that deploy underweight. I selected a bag ladder that has one exposed step that whenstepped on, or pulled, deploys the remainder of the ladder from thebag. The whole assembly can be secured to rails, or some to cleats.

If this is not a piece of safety equipment you currently own, pleasemake it a priority. That few feet from the water surface to the deck canbe insurmountable under certain circumstances. You definitely wantthe piece-of-mind these simple and reasonably priced devices bring.
