WATER INFRASTRUCTUREOur driving goal in St. Bernard Parish was to alleviate flooding that had hindered public life and damaged property. Part of this strategy was to increase capacity in several existing canals (upper map) and canal-adjacent properties (lower map). We designed urban wells to keep water flowing through the canals to prevent mosquito breeding and used them as amenities and educational devices in the plan.

At the core of all our urban design projects was a battle to sway hearts and minds to think of New Orleans as a delta city interdependent with water. I used a phenomenological approach to communicate this in my design for the wells, where spending time near one becomes a reminder that we are surrounded by water; a beautiful, life-giving force.

PLANNING & DESIGN04

eThe work below is from an urban plan for Arabi, Louisiana, where one major goal was to capture traffic that passes Arabi by offering easy transit into the downtown and a reason to go there. One part of our team developed strategies for the heavily trafficked vehicular corridor to the north, while I developed strategies for pedestrian activity on the levee to the south. One of my proposed projects was a functional platform to provide space for the people who cross the levee to sit by the river (below).

The levee is a particularly active pedestrian corridor, but not many people traverse the wall to enter the downtown. One initial strategy to promote this crossing was a playful wall intervention that added artwork (symbolized here with colorful circle graphics), symbols denoting businesses people could visit on the other side, bike lock rings so bikers wouldn't have to hoist their bike over the wall, and pool ladders that play off the local and apt description of New Orleans as a city in a bathtub.

We analyzed personas of those people who use the riverfront and those people who we hoped would use it (above right) to design public projects like undulating sidewalks (below) and corridor markers to serve these unique personas.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT04

//

I managed capital projects for Capital City Development Corporation in Boise, Idaho and was particularly interested in improving stormwater quality entering the Boise River. In this project, I worked with the local highway district, an engineer, and a landscape architect to analyze watersheds, find an especially overburdened, polluted location within our district, and design a landscape project to capture, retain, and remediate stormwater before it could enter the river.

Watershed Location: Americana Outfall- overburdened, polluted outfall handling stormwater from N.End to river

Americana Outfall

Above: Americana outfall Right: Map of stormwater conveyance systems and urban watersheds in Boise, Idaho. Images above and at right are from the Ada County Highway District.

After studying three sites at the bottom of the watershed, we determined that redesigning a remnant concrete triangle could handle all the stormwater within this portion of the watershed at the least cost and most benefit to the public.

Renderings above by CSHQA Architects and Engineers, the design firm for the project

Inputs-Outputs chart to communicate the strategic plan of Capital City Development Corporation in Boise, Idaho

DAYLIGHT ANALYSISDaylight analysis for the historic Brulatour House, French Quarter, New Orleans. The building will be renovated for use as art museums by the Historic New Orleans Collection and the program requires some bright, open spaces to view models and maps and some spaces with very controlled light (18 fc, 44,000 fc/yr) for centuries old pen and ink works. Our design team took light measurements at several museums, analyzed many daylighting strategies, and settled on a 68% clear sawtooth with 2 ft-oc fins and 20% VLT operable shade cloth. I was responsible for light measurements, daylight modelling, and graphics, and assisted in design development and client presentations.

PAINTING + SKETCHINGMy art explores humanity’s relationship with - and control over - the environment in which we live. I’m especially fascinated by the interaction of natural and human processes; those sequences of events that would occur without us, but which we alter significantly in pursuit of health and prosperity.
