Itron Metering Solutions SA (PTY) Ltd has

undergone restructuring of shareholding to

become Ontec Systems (PTY) Ltd. What started as

a small local company in South Africa has gone full

circle and is yet again wholly focused on providing

solutions to the South African market.

Our products include electricity, gas and water

meters, prepaid metering solutions, data collection

and communication systems, including automated

meter reading (AMR) and Smart Metering /

advanced metering infrastructure (AMI)

Ontec has a proud history in South Africa dating

back to 1989 when Angcon Technologies started

manufacturing prepaid meters in Atlantis. Over the

following decades the company changed name a

number of times as it evolved along with the

prepayment market in South Africa.

Notably the company became part of a global

family when it was acquired by Actaris in 2001 and

thereafter in 2007 part of the global metering

industry leader Itron (when it acquired Actaris). The

South African company was a key and instrumental

part of the Itron global family as the expert in

prepayment metering technologies and was

instrumental in taking STS prepayment metering to

the rest of the globe.

Ontec remains a distributor of Itron products and

solutions within South Africa. We are stronger, more

agile and adaptive to the local market’s requirements.

The culture inspires and demands continuous

beginning of 2016 the South African BB-BEE

regulations underwent a significant change and as

a result, in order to continue bringing great

products and services to our South African

customer, Itron adapted the company to the local

BB-BEE legislation. Itron concluded a transaction

that allowed a change in shareholding to include a

majority (51%) black ownership. As a result of the

shareholder restructuring Itron Metering Solutions

South Africa (Pty) Ltd changed its name to Ontec

Systems (Pty) Ltd on the 1st of July 2016. Ontec is

a B-BBEE majority 51% black owned Level 3

contributor.

The Level 3-status is an important milestone in

Itron South Africa’s empowerment journey.

The company’s environmental stewardship reaches

far wider than its products.

Actaris acquires Schlumberger Metering

AEG, supplier of very 1st prepayment meters andvending systems.

Angcon isacquired by AEG Energy Control.

Angcon opens manufacturing in Atlantis. First keypad electricity prepayment meter in the world developed in 1989. Angcon Technologies starts in Atlantis manufacturing prepaid meters, receives a contract for 6000 meters which grew to 250000 by 1993.

Instrumental with industry players in South Africa to develop STS standard. Itron acquires Actaris.

Schlumberger acquires AEG Energy Control. Multi-Integration done to other CRM systems like SAP.

Actaris awarded contract by Eskom for the largest on-line prepayment system in the world to cater for 4.5Million meters with a capability of 250 vending transactions per second.

Introduction of ECLIPSE Vending Gateway (EVG)to increase vending ootprint to banks and other 3rd party channels.

First Revenue Management Operation on behalf of utility undertaken by Schlumberger.

1st Vending system to Support STS and Smart Card capability for both Electricity & GAS utilities.

Introduction of next generation STS meters (Talexus range) & Vending Software (IRIS / ECLIPSE).
