Open Frame Film FestivalDo you have a story to tell? Student-written, acted, directed, and musically scored fi lms are presented on the big screen of the 1,500-seat historic Canton Palace Theatre. Winners have competed and won at subsequent fi lm festivals, and have gone on to achieve success through the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities Best Semester—Los Angeles Film Studies Center.

Honors ProgramMalone’s Honors Program supports intellectually gifted and highly moti-vated students with small class sizes, stimulating discussions, off-campus activities, and research options above and beyond what is available in the traditional classroom setting. Stu-dents cite community with peers and mentoring relationships with faculty as benefi ts.

Asia Harris dreams of travel-ing the world.

She wants to see a Wimbledon Champi-onship in London.

She wants to play tennis professionally. And after a career as a tennis pro, she is excited to interact with patients as a physical therapist.

“Malone has given me opportunities—and confi dence—to do my best and to never give up,” says the dean’s-listed sophomore exercise science major.

Asia adds that even after only one year, she’s had opportunities that are helping her achieve her dreams.

“Getting to know people from all different paths of life, backgrounds, and even other countries is awesome and something I really didn’t get to experience until I came to Malone,” she says. “These opportunities will greatly enhance my ability to relate to and communicate with my future patients.”

Asia had a fantastic fi rst season as a freshman tennis player—she held the #1 singles spot for the Pioneers, had the best record on the team, and held the #3 doubles slot. She earned All-GLIAC Honorable Mention accolades, was a two-time NCCAA Student

Athlete of the week—and earned the prestigious NCCAA All-America honor for the year.

“The conditioning during preseason was what I needed to have the best season I’ve ever had,” says Asia, who has been playing tennis since she was four. “I really enjoyed getting to know my team, and by the end of the year a lot of my teammates became some of my best friends.”

She’s also grown in her faith at Malone.

“Being surrounded by so many believers at Malone is such a blessing. Chal-lenges are part of the college life, but a community of believers so close to me has helped me fi x my eyes on Christ’s purpose for my life.”

Jake Belair has been enthralled with animals ever since he could talk.

As he lives out his dream—even as a college student—of working with animals every day, the Zoo and Wildlife Biology major constantly is discovering more and more about animals in and out of the classroom.

In the summers, Jake works as an animal encounters outreach assistant for the nationally renowned Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. He’s responsible for the care and handling of all animals, including the upkeep of their facilities, maintenance of their health status, writing daily reports, and interacting with guests at the zoo.

His favorite animal is Tressel, a Tamandua—or anteater native to South America. He also enjoys the varying personalities of the beautiful Chilean fl amingos.

“I love how they are all crazy in their own way,” he says, as he protects Eli, a 3-year-old bird, from Shorty and some others who are not so nice to Eli.

“Notice the coral color of Eli?” Jake asks an inquisitive child. “Flamingos’ color comes from the kinds of food they eat, mostly algae and plankton from the water. All fl amingos are

white or gray when they are hatched, and they turn colors as their cells pro-cess the pigments in their food.”

Jake leaves for Columbus the moment after his last Malone fi nal exam, and heads back the day before he starts his training for Malone’s Student Senate— this year he’ll be student body vice president.

His brain seems to be an endless ency-clopedia for animal facts—a skill that comes in handy for tests and quizzes during the school year.

“I’ve always had a good memory,” he says. “And there are 90 animals in our department, so I learn more every day from studying, my coworkers, and the animals themselves.”

If there’s something new, hip, or just plain fun going on at the Akron Canton Airport (CAK), you can be sure that Malone alumna ryan (karp) hollingsworth is involved.

As communications and social media manager, she’s hosted speed-eating contests, live tweeted Air Force One’s arrival at CAK, started a Facebook page long before social media was standard, and started Twitter, Pinterest, and Ins-tagram accounts. For these efforts, her team was awarded fi rst place for Social Media Campaigns in the 2013 Airports Council International-North America Excellence in Communications Award.

“I’ve always been observant of pop culture: movies, books, technology, media—I’m a brand watcher,” Ryan says. “So when I started off at CAK, I had freedom to execute my ideas. I’ve always treated us like a big brand, even when no-body else was doing social media. I never let ‘small’ enter our mindset. I always try to give people an interesting look at some of the behind-the-scenes.”

Ryan is married to fellow alumnus Brian Hollingsworth, whom she met while working on Malone’s student newspaper, the Aviso.

Brian, associate development offi cer at Akron Children’s Hospital, also imple-ments creativity into his work. Recently, the hospital broke ground for a new critical care tower, and they wanted to do something special for the ceremony.

At a brainstorming meeting, someone suggested building a model of the building using LEGO® blocks. Brian put out a call for volunteers, and with the help of pro-fessional architects, the project took off. The model used more than 12,000 pieces and took 120 hours to complete.

“It was a lot of fun, and we received an amazing response,” Brian says.

Both are active members of the Canton and Akron communities. Brian is a mem-ber of Torchbearers of Akron, a board member for the Firestone Park YMCA, hospital liaison for the Akron Children’s Emerging Leaders Board, and past-president of the Malone Young Alumni Community. He was the 2013 Malone Young Alumnus of the Year.

Ryan is vice chair of ystark!, sits on the boards of TomTod Ideas and the Malone Young Alumni Community, and is active in the Akron Area PRSA.

Being a Pioneer means becoming equipped for success in every area of your life. Basketball standout Isiah Elliott is leading his team to victory as he strives for success in and out of the classroom.

The dynamic guard who attends college in his own backyard (he graduated

from Canton McKinley High School) rose quickly up the ranks as one of the best players in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Ath-letic Conference, as the Pioneers enter into the NCAA Divi-sion II era.

In addition to surpassing 1,000 career points his junior year, Isiah was the fi rst basketball player in the GLIAC to

earn “Player of the Week” award three times last season. Isiah’s success helped the Pioneers make some noise in their fi rst season in the gruelling GLIAC, earning a sweep over the defending champion while notching some other impressive wins.

Despite missing the last seven games due to an injury, Isiah also: > Earned National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) East Region Player of the year award,> Was named to the NCCAA All- America Team, First Team,> Was named First Team All-GLIAC.

“Every year Isiah gets better and bet-ter, and adds something to his game,” says Coach Tim Walker, who was named NCCAA Coach of the Year.

Isiah is majoring in Sport Management and is looking forward to an exciting senior year (and maybe a few acro-batic dunks) on the basketball court.

Changed lives

Pioneer athletic teams are committed to being Christ-Centered, Athlete- Focused, and Coach-Driven. Pro-pelled to succeed on the court and in the classroom, Malone athletes have earned numerous national accolades over the years and continue to compete at a high level as we enter our fi rst year as full members of NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

We challenge you to join us in our quest for championship play and changed lives.

In 2011–12, 70 Malone athletes earned Academic Achievement Awards from the NCAA Athletic Directors Association for earning GPAs of 3.5 or higher. The Athletic Department’s Academic Suc-cess Rating was an impressive 98%—tops among GLIAC members.

Athletic Scholarships Athletic scholarships are determined by each coach on an individual basis. To apply for a scholarship, fi ll out our athletics questionnaire atmalonepioneers.com and apply to Malone at www.malone.edu/apply. Video and schedules can be sent to each individual coach.

Your fi rst step toward an athletic scholarship is registering with the NCAA Eligibility Center. If you want to participate in Division II athletics as a freshman, you must fi rst register and be certifi ed by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Center. Be sure to register, so you will be eligible to play and practice your fresh-man year. This form is available from your high school counseling offi ce or at www.ncaa.org. There is a one-time registration fee.

Worldview ForumNo one except God sees or interprets reality without a worldview. Every song we sing, every fi lm we see, every conversation we have, every sermon we hear, every professor who teaches us, every decision we make—the totality of what we believe and what we receive comprises our worldviews. Worldview Forums are events held four times per year that provide an opportunity to practice critical thinking and civil dialog in the comparison of various worldviews in a professionally moderated, academic environment.

The Aviso AVWMalone’s online student newspaper, The Aviso AVW (Audio. Visual. Web.), is enjoying unprecedented success, receiving three prestigious recognitions when granted the Award of Excellence by the Evangelical Press Association in the campus digital category. The Aviso has also taken fi rst place for Best Collegiate Newspaper Website in its division from the Ohio Newspaper Association, and was named a fi nal-ist in the Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker contest. Malone is the only Ohio university among the fi nalists in the online category.

multicultural servicesCelebrating diversity is what we’re all about at Malone University. We host interesting programs like “Listening In” to historic voices. You can take part in awesome events like the annu-al Culturefest celebration of cultures, traditions, and foods—or join one of our student groups like the Malone International Student Association. You can also get involved with the One Voice Gospel Choir!

ForensicsForensics is the art of competi-tive public performance. Our team travels to intercollegiate tourna-ments throughout the academic year. Students can choose from 12 different events, including interpreta-tion (acting), public speaking, and debate. Last year, four individuals participated in national competition and brought home a total of seven trophies from the National Christian College Forensics Invitational. As a team, Malone tied for fi rst place in the overall sweepstakes for Division 3, before placing second nationally after the tiebreaker.

MusicMalone has a long tradition of excel-lence in choral and instrumental mu-sic. The 70-voice University Chorale’s reputation extends throughout Ohio and beyond. Numerous instrumental ensembles, including a marching band, give students a variety of outlets for their musical gifts. A new highlight to the program is an opera workshop. Malone graduate, Laurel Weir, won the prestigious Arden J. Yockey Scholar-ship for voice, where she competed against voice majors from Ohio’s nationally known conservatories.

Creative WritingThe Creative Writing Program at Malone offers not only a curriculum conducive to the study of writing, but also a culture where writers are supported and challenged to grow as artists. Students meet and work with visiting writers, travel to conferences, compete in contests, work on publica-tions, and are part of an active arts community.
