Who We Are
in 1848, four brothers of the de La Salle
christian Schools were sent from france
to St. vincent’s parish on canal Street in
new york city. their mission was to begin
a school for french-speaking immigrants.
by 1853, the new school had relocated near
131st Street in the manhattanville area. a
decade later, the academy received college
accreditation from the state of new york
and became known as manhattan college.
the mission of manhattan college, deeply
rooted in the traditions of excellence in
teaching, respect for individual dignity
and a commitment to social justice, is
unchanged: to provide a person-centered,
contemporary educational experience
characterized by high academic standards,
reflection on values and principles, and
preparation for a dynamic, lifelong career.
