Manifest Destiny/U.S. Mexican War/ Compromise of 1850 7 The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 contained the following: -The United States was to pay $15 million to Mexico. -The Rio Grande River was to be the boundary between Texas and Mexico. -Mexico was to give ownership of the California territory to the United States. (This territory contained California, New Mexico, Arizona,

Nevada, Utah, and parts of Wyoming and Colorado.) -Mexicans living in the territory were given a choice. They could resettle within the new boundary of Mexico or become American citizens with full civil rights. 90% of the people living in the California territory chose to become American citizens. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo did not address, deal with, the northwestern border of Texas. Texas had claimed area east of the northern part of the Rio Grande. The border of the state of Texas became an issue when California became a state in 1850. California entered as a “free” state. The southern “slave” states wanted to extend slavery into the New Mexico and Utah Territories. A compromise had to be made to ease the tension between those “slave” states and people that did not want to extend slavery. People in the Utah and New Mexico Territory were to use “popular sovereignty,” the option to vote, to choose for or against slavery.

1. What was an economic result of the Treaty of Hidalgo? 2. Why did the Mexican Cession lead to the Compromise of 1850?

1. Why would some people in the northern states of the U.S. not want to follow the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850? 2. Was “popular sovereignty” a good way to deal with the problem of slavery? Why or why not?
