Bill Campbell KAP Presedent

On behalf of the executive and board of Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP), I would like to welcome young producers, guests and media to the 2021 Manitoba Young Farmers Conference. We know it has become increasingly hard for young farmers to get involved in the agriculture industry. With rising input and land prices, transportation disruptions, and now, a global pandemic, farmers–and

particularly young farmers–face many challenges to enter the industry.

Opportunities to make your voice heard and get involved are important. The Manitoba Young Farmers program has a mission to unite young farmers, while KAP’s young farmer policy committee provides an avenue to bring forward the issues that matter to you. The input we receive drives our efforts, and your involvement helps our organization advocate on your behalf.

Issues this year, like changes to the Agricultural Crown Lands Program, continued uncertainty surrounding the impacts of the carbon tax on grain drying and heating and cooling barns, among other issues, have broad implications for all our members. Young farmers are particularly affected by some of these changes, and KAP will continue to advocate on your behalf with all levels of government to ensure that our operations remain successful and profitable.

As we move forward, I ask that you continue to be vigilant when it comes to your mental health and the mental health of others. We have gone through one of the toughest years in recent memory and the coming year may not be any easier.

KAP’s mental health literacy training program, In the Know, has been developed for farmers to inform them on mental health, how to cope with the stresses of farming, and how to have conversations about mental health. I encourage everyone to enroll and ask that we look out for one another and support each other like we always do.

Best wishes for a great conference, and a productive farming year.

Chris BeaudryFarmer, public speaker, counsellor

Chris Beaudry was born in Edmonton and raised in Calgary and St Front Sk. Hes a father of 3 young girls, husband to his wife Richelle, and a 4th generation farmer. Chris was an assistant coach with the 2017/18 Hum-boldt Broncos, who were tragically involved in the bus crash that killed 16 players and staff. Since then Chris has been heavily involved in the field of mental health and healing. He’s helped create the first online mental wellness course for students, Mental Wellness 30 at the Distance Learning Center In Kenaston. He’s currently working with the Canadian Mental Health association in a Peer Support Role, with Prairie Hospice as a volunteer hospice worker, and he contributes and facilitates a grief sharing group he created with his sister and a counsellor based around the teachings of Dr. Kubler Ross. He has trained under Dr. Gabor Mate, Don Miguel Ruiz, Dale Borglum, Gael Carter & Marilyn Keefer of The Institution Of Shamanic Medicine, and many others.

Phil Veldhuis

Owner of Phil’s Honey; Instructor with the School of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba

Phil is a lifelong beekeeper who first learned from his grandmother the thrill of understanding a hive filled with buzzing bees. Since then, Phil has worked hard to understand both big and small questions: in bee-keeping and in life. Phil has about 1200 hives producing about 250 bar-rels of honey annually. His hives are scattered in the country centered on Starbuck Manitoba. Beekeeping tends to be a solitary and contem-plative business, so Phil has lots of time to think when working his bees. As a result Phil leads a double life; in one life he is a burly beekeeper, in his other life he is an armchair philosopher and educator. Phil has a Master’s Degree in Philosophy from the University of Manitoba. Phil has been teaching various basic courses in philosophy since 1993, and as A Farm Advisor in the Faculty of Agriculture since 2014. Phil, and his wife, Vona, have two children, Timmy and Jayna.

Jake Ayre & Colin PennerManitoba Young Farmers Committee Co-Chairs

On behalf of Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP), we would like to welcome you to the 2021 Manitoba Young Farmers Conference. Our focus this year is sharing strategies for improving profitability without increasing farm size, a necessity given rising input and land costs, global market pressures and unpredictable weather patterns. We hope that you learn something valuable today that you can take back to your farming operation.

KAP continues to support young farmers and invest in their success through two sepa-rate initiatives. The Manitoba Young Farmers program (MYF) provides education and networking opportunities for producers under 40 years old to support farmers at the start of their careers. The Young Farmer policy committee addresses the policy issues specific to young farmers and brings their perspective forward to KAP.

The Young Farmer policy committee has been very active since its formation in 2019, providing opportunities for young farmers to share their concerns and develop proposed solutions. KAP’s policy process is grassroots and democratic, and we take pride in hearing from members and ensuring that all levels of government recognize the challenges that young farmers face. With the onset of COVID-19 in Manitoba, KAP adjusted to provide virtual learning and networking opportunities for young farmers. This included hosting webinars throughout the spring, government relations training in November, a trivia and games evening in January, and a Bearpit session with Minister Pedersen in February.

KAP sponsored five young farmers to attend The Canadian Young Farmers’ Forum (CYFF) National Conference held in Charlottetown, PEI from March 6 to 8, 2020. This year, KAP is covering the CYFF membership fee so that young farmers can attend the conference for free. Thank you for attending our virtual conference and being a part of the MYF program. We invite you to attend our events throughout the year and consider working with KAP’s Young Farmer policy committee to ensure that your voices are heard.

He has been proud to spend his life living and working in agriculture, and is passionate about moving the industry forward.

Lawrence Warwaruk Co-owner, Farmery Estate Brewery

Lawrence & Chris Warwaruk are no strangers to hard work and successful unique business startups. They have an entrepreneurial spirit, and an inspiring story of hardship and success. In the early 90’s however, the ‘farm boys’ left the family farm and found themselves in Winnipeg.

From there, the brothers started a four-star restaurant called Lux Sole in the Osborne St. South area and never looked back. After ten successful years of running Lux Sole, they transitioned their restaurant into the first gastropub in Winnipeg called Luxalune, listing over 100 beers from around the world.

Lawrence and Chris were still missing their farm roots; and they also saw an opportunity in the growing craft beer trend. So, they combined their farming experience with their service industry savvy and launched Farmery Estate Brewery. Using natural, homegrown ingredients of barley and hops grown on their family farm near Neepawa, MB, and a dose of good ol’ farmer common sense, they began a journey of brewing beer that encompasses the taste of the prairies. This journey came full circle with the building of the Farmery Estate Brewery near their family farm in Neepawa, MB.

Currently Farmery Estate Brewery has over 15 different styles of beer, as well as craft-brewed malted sodas. They have added the Farmery Craft Beer Store in Neepawa, and the Farmery Fulfillment Centre in Winnipeg, in order to utilize modern delivery and fulfillment options to better serve their customers, and connect other local Manitoba producers to their customer base. This practice is Farmery in a nutshell: adding value to what they grow by making excellent products making a difference in the overall community by connecting different organizations, people and businesses in order to benefit the entire economy.
