STORYCenturies of overpopulation and reckless consumptionhad brought the Earth's ecosystem to the brink ofcollapse. Radical, panic-induced laws restrictingreproduction and fuel use came too late to stem the tideof decay and pollution that was rapidly drowning theplanet. Scientists predicted that within just two to threedecades, mass starvation and disease would ravage theentire planet. In desperation, governments and globalcorporations set up a Planetary Evacuation Program(P.E.P.) to transport the Earth's inhabitants to safety oninterstellar bio-colonies.

Several years later, however, as the time for departureneared, it was evident that there was nowhere nearenough room aboard the evacuation shuttles for all ofthe Earth's inhabitants. A selection lottery was imple-mented, but it soon became clear that only the mostprivileged segments of society were being chosen forevacuation.

Widespread panic and chaos erupted as the shuttlesprepared for departure. Thousands tried to force theirway onto the spacebound ships but were instead turnedback or slaughtered by P.E.P. military escort troops. Inthe end, the shuttles lifted off as planned, carrying theirprivileged cargo away from a dying planet. And leavingbillions behind to perish.

Page 4 7th Legion User s Manual

Page 7: Manual 7th Legion

Hundreds of years later...

Having been relieved of a substantial segment of itspopulation by the P.E.P. and sacrificing a far moresizable segment to famine and disease, the Earth hasbegun to heal. Those who managed to survive after theevacuation eventually split into seven legions, all vyingfor political and military control of the planet and itsscarce resources.

With global communication fractured and record-keeping eclipsed by more pressing needs of survival, the P.E.P. and those selected to participate in it havebecome clouded in myth and legend.

The most well-known legend prophesies the Returning,a time of war when the Chosen return to reclaim theirplace on Earth. The Returning, it is told, will be pre-ceded by three concurrent signs that any man can see.The first is one day and one night of continual daylight. The second is a day and night of darkness. The finalsign is the rain of fire.

The signs have begun to appear. The seven legionsmust now put aside their differences and join forces toprotect the Earth from the legendary enemy they allfear most of all—the Chosen.

You control the most powerful legion of all, the7th Legion.

Although the 7th Legion is presumed to be the "goodguy" force and the Chosen the "bad guy" force, keep inmind that war is never so black and white. True, the 7th

Legion are descendants of those the Chosen left toperish on a dying Earth. But from the Chosen's per-spective, they did what they were forced to do in orderto ensure the survival of the human race. If they hadn'tleft the planet when they did, neither they nor thosethey left behind would be alive today.

One of the keys to victory in war is an unfailing belief inthe righteousness of the cause you are fighting for.Whichever force you choose, embrace your side's causeand show no mercy to those who seek to destroy you.

switching to and from alternate windows and views. You will use the mouse to move the pointer around themain game screen to view different areas of the battle-field, build structures, issue commands to your units, etc. As a general rule, the left mouse button is used toindicate view areas, select objects and units, and issuemovement and attack commands. The right mousebutton is typically used to deselect units.

THE VIEWABLE AREAThe action in 7th Legion takes place over a wide rangeof land, far more than can be viewed all at once on thescreen. Consequently, you'll need to scroll around thescreen to view different portions of the battlefield.

The entire battlefield is represented on the radar in theupper left-hand corner of the main game screen (see the"Radar" section below for more info). The whiterectangular frame on the radar represents the currentviewable portion of the battlefield. To scroll the view-able area, press the arrow keys on the keyboard or usethe mouse to move the pointer to the edge of the screenin the direction you want the view to move.

To quickly change the view to a particular area of thebattlefield, use the mouse to position the pointer on theradar over the area you want to view and click there. The viewable area will instantly switch to the area ofthe battlefield you indicated.

VISIBILITYWhen you begin a mission, you will notice that themajority of the battlefield is hidden beneath a wall ofdark "fog." This fog indicates the area of the battlefield

THE FIELD OFBATTLE

7th Legion User's Manual Page 11

Page 14: Manual 7th Legion

that you have not yet explored and, therefore, are notyet familiar with. Fogged-in areas are represented inblack on the radar. As your units move out over thebattlefield, the fog will clear wherever they go. Since

the fog may very well be concealing the presenceof approaching enemy units, it is a good idea toquickly send some of your low ranking troopsout in different directions over the battlefield toreveal as much of the terrain as possible.

Note: Fog will roll back in to previously revealedareas if there is no activity in those areas for anextended period of time.

RADARThe radar, which can be toggled on and off with theTab key, provides you with a miniature view of theentire battlefield. You will come to rely on the radar togive you a general idea of what is taking place on thebattlefield beyond the current viewable area. The radarfeatures two display modes, which you can switchbetween depending upon your situation in the game.

Standard DisplayThe standard radar display is the default mode and theone you will probably use most often. Black areas onthe radar represent unexplored areas of the battlefieldthat are still cloaked in fog. Colors corresponding to aparticular force indicate units or buildings belonging tothat force. So if you are currently viewing a remote areaof the battlefield and you notice an abundance of en-emy-colored dots surrounding your base on the radar, get back there and beef up your defenses pronto!

Page 12 7th Legion User s Manual

Page 15: Manual 7th Legion

Infrared DisplayThe infrared display is used to give you an idea of thestrength and concentration of enemy units. To activatethe infrared display, hit the I key on your keyboard. Allenemy units in the explored area will now appear as redspots on your radar. The intensity of each spot reflectsthe strength of the unit. The brighter the shade of red,the stronger the unit. This display mode is a good wayto quickly determine where the enemy's strongest unitsare concentrated and which areas are most vulnerableto attack. To return to the standard radar, hit theI key again.

Mastering control of your battle units may well be whatenables your force to conquer the battlefield instead ofbecoming fertilizer for it. In order to react to unpredict-able enemy attacks, launch well-executed attacks ofyour own and deal with 7th Legion's fast-pacedgameplay, it is essential that you memorize the variousmeans of controlling your units and practice them untilthey become second nature.

SELECTING/DESELECTING UNITSIndividual Unit SelectionBefore you can issue a command to a unit, you mustfirst click on the unit to select it. Once a unit isselected, it will be framed by a white bounding boxwith a health meter beneath it.

Multiple Unit SelectionTo select a group of units simultaneously, hold down theleft mouse button and drag a frame around all the unitsyou want to select. Once the units are framed, releasethe mouse button. The entire group of units you selectedwill react to the commands you issue. This method ofgroup selection works best when the units you want toselect are all within close proximity of each other. If youwant to assemble a group from units scattered aroundthe battlefield, use the shift + click method explained in"Adding Units to a Group Selection."

You can also right-click on a unit to select all friendlyunits in the viewed area that are currently performingthe same action as the unit you clicked on.

Deselecting UnitsTo deselect a unit, or group of units, right-click on anunoccupied portion of the battlefield.

Adding Units to a Group SelectionKeep in mind that when you drag a selection framearound a group of units, all of your units within thebounds of the frame you drag will be selected and willreact to your command. If you need to be more selec-tive in deciding which units to add to a group, you canadd units to the group one at a time by holding downthe Shift key and clicking on each unit individually.

MOVING UNITSTo move selected units, position the pointer over thelocation you want the units to move to and click there. The units will immediately move toward the locationyou indicated and stop when they arrive there. If theunits are prevented from reaching the intended locationby impassable terrain, they will move as close to thelocation as possible.

TerrainBattlefield terrain, including water, mountains andrubble, affects gameplay in a number of ways. First, you will need to take surrounding terrain into accountwhen building structures. Structures must be built onflat terrain, so you'll want to seek out areas with plentyof flat land around when setting up a base. Second, unitmovement is impacted by terrain. At times, what lookslike a short distance between two points may turn outto be anything but, as your units are forced to takecircuitous routes around terrain obstructions. Finally, terrain can often play a role in strategic planning if youuse it to anticipate where enemy units will have totravel to get around obstructions.

Movement CharacteristicsMovement characteristics determine how your unitswill react if they encounter enemy units en route totheir destination. To select a movement characteristicfor your units when you instruct them to move, positionthe pointer over the target location and hold down theleft mouse button. A menu will appear next to thepointer. While keeping the button pressed, position thepointer over the movement characteristic you want the

units to assume while moving. Release the mousebutton to issue one of the following commands:

Normal: Units move toward their target without regardto enemy units.

Defensive: Units will try to avoid and run away fromenemy units. They will continue toward their targetwhen they find a clear path.

Aggressive: Units will attack any enemy unit thatcomes into range, but will continue to move towardtheir target.

Cancel: Cancels the movement command.

Unit DetachmentsUnit detachments allow you to save unit selections soyou will not have to take the time to find and reas-semble particular selections time and time again.Detachments can be recalled and are ready for actionat the touch of a button. You can even assembledetachments made up of units ideally suited for aparticular task, so they will be ready to move when youneed them.

To create a detachment, select the unit or units youwant to make into a detachment. While the units areselected, press and hold the Ctrl key, then press anumber key (1-0). When you release the keys, theselected units are stored as a detachment and assignedto the number key you indicated. Now, anytime you hitthat number key, the units assigned to that detachmentwill be selected and ready for your commands.

Most missions in 7th Legion require you to build andmaintain a base. Your base is the home of your headquar-ters and is the key to expanding your forces and develop-ing new technology. Because your base is the primarysupplier of your resources, it is imperative that you defendit at all times. Once your base is destroyed, it is only amatter of time before your force is a memory.

The procedure for initiating construction is essentiallythe same for all structures. First, click on the icon for thestructure you want to build in the Structure/Unit Menu atthe bottom of the main game screen. If you aren't surewhat type of structure an icon represents, rest the pointerover the icon for a moment and the name of the corre-sponding structure will appear. Next, position the pointerover the area of the battlefield where you want thestructure to be built. Your pointer will drag a grid-covered "blueprint" of your structure wherever youmove it. If the structure cannot be placed where yourpointer rests, the grid will turn red. Reposition yourpointer until the grid turns beige and click to place thestructure. If you change your mind about buildingthe structure before you have placed it, right-clickinstead to cancel construction.

Often, building a structure will create new structureor unit building options. Structures that create newbuilding options are called parent structures, and thenew options they create are refereed to as spawns. For example, after building a barracks (parent), youwill have the option to generate battle units (spawnsof the barracks). New structure or unit options willappear on the Structure/Unit Menu after the constructionof a parent structure is complete. You can also click on aparent structure on the battlefield at any time to reveal itsspawn structures or units on the Structure/Unit Menu.

POWER

HEADQUARTERSIf a mission requires you to build a base, you aresupplied with a Mobile Base Unit (MBU). Move yourMBU to the area on the battlefield where you want toconstruct your base. Once your MBU is in place, position the pointer over it. If it is possible to buildhere, "DEPLOY" will appear within the target pointer.(If "DEPLOY" does not appear, your base cannot bebuilt on the location you indicated. Reposition yourMBU and try again.) Click on the MBU to deploy yourheadquarters. This is the command center of your baseoperations. If you lose this building, you will not be ableto build any other structures. Protect it at all costs!

For a list of all of the structures you can build in7th Legion, refer to the "Structures" section of the7th Legion Database.

Before you can build additional structures on your base, you must first build a power plant. Power plants supplythe energy necessary to run base operations.

The power meter to the left of the Structure/Unit Menushows the status of your power supply. This meterrepresents the ratio of power available to consumption/need. The yellow area indicates how much power isbeing used. The blue area indicates power available.

Every structure that you build increases the drainon your power supply. If you overtax your powerresources, you will receive an insufficient powermessage and your operations will slow to a crawl, somonitor your power meter carefully. If it starts gettinglow, build more power plants to increase yourpower reserve.

Page 18 7th Legion User's Manual

Page 21: Manual 7th Legion

After you have built a barracks, you will gain the abilityto generate battle units. To do so, first click on yourbarracks to reveal the available battle units in Structure/Unit Menu. Next click on the icon of the unit you wishto generate or on one of the numbers on the lowerportion of the icon to generate multiple units. A progressmeter will appear above the icon indicating the timeremaining before generation is complete. Once the unithas been generated, it will emerge from the barracksready for action. If you clicked on a number to generatemultiple units, unit generation will continue until theindicated number of units has emerged from thebarracks or until you run out of money. If you run outof credits, production will be halted until more fundsarrive. If you click and hold the unit icon, the cursorwill change to the "DEPLOY" cursor, You can thenplace the units anywhere on the map, and the new unitswill move to that location once built.

Click on the progress bar to halt production. Right-clickon the bar to cancel production. This is useful if youchange your mind about building a unit.

As you progress in the game, you will gain the technol-ogy and resources to generate more advanced battle unitsand vehicles. Depending on which type of unit you wantto generate, you may first have to build different parentstructures. Once you have done so, the method forgenerating new units is the same as that described above.

For a description of all of the units in the game, refer tothe sections "Troops," "7th Legion Units" and "ChosenUnits" in the 7th Legion Database.

DEVELOPINGNEW

TECHNOLOGY

BETTINGPAID

In certain missions, you will have the opportunity tobuild a hi-tech lab. Your researchers will use thisfacility to develop upgrades to your systems and hard-ware, and to create powerful new weapons and tools.

Each time you upgrade a technology, it raises the levelof that technology by one. For example, when you firstbuild a power plant, it starts out at level zero. If yousubsequently build a hi-tech lab and implement thedevelopment of a power plant upgrade, your powerplant will be elevated to level one and will operatemore efficiently. You can upgrade individual technolo-gies multiple times, raising each one to a maximum oflevel five, but each time you implement an upgrade, thecost for a subsequent upgrade will double.

For a description of all of the technology upgrades andinnovations available with a hi-tech lab, refer to the"Hi-Tech Lab Upgrades and Creations" section of the7th Legion Database.

Running a war ain't cheap. To fund the building ofstructures, creation of units, and development of newtechnology, you are going to need money.

Your budget comes to you in the form of credits thatare automatically doled out at a regular interval andadded to your credit bank. Your total credits are indi-cated in the lower left portion of the main game screen. Each time you build a new structure, create a new unitor develop new technology, the cost of doing so will bededucted from your credit bank.

Page 20 7th Legion User s Manual

Page 23: Manual 7th Legion

The number of credits that you receive at each budgetallocation period depends on your current militaryrank. (See '"Nice Work, Soldier'—Moving up in Rank'for an explanation of military rank.) In a nutshell, thehigher your rank, the greater your budget.

"You know what I think about violence. For me it isprofoundly moral—more moral than compromises andtransactions."

At the start of each mission, you will be presented witha mission objective screen. Here, you will learn whatyou need to accomplish to successfully complete themission and move on. Once play has begun, you willfrequently receive special orders. These are time-limited sub-missions, independent of your primarymission objective. Successful completion of specialorders will generate extra credits or a new base for yourforce. Special order objectives appear along the left-hand side of the main game screen below the radar.

Since this is war, and not an exercise in peace anddiplomatic relations, most of your missions will involveattacking enemy units and structures. To do this, selecta unit or group of units from your force and then clickon the enemy unit or structure you want to attack. Theselected units will move into firing range and fire upontheir target. They will continue firing upon their targetuntil they have destroyed it, are destroyed themselvesor are issued new orders.

CRATESCrates left behind by troops are often encountered onthe battlefield. Crates contain special power-ups thatcan greatly enhance your units' capabilities. To open acrate, move one of your units, or a group of units, overit. The effect of the crate will be immediate and canaffect all units in the immediate vicinity. If a cratecontains a power-up that results in an alteration of unitcapability, a small letter indicative of the power-up willappear above all units affected by it and will remainthere for the duration of the effect.

ENEMY ATTACKAs you are plotting strategies and dispatching units todestroy the enemy, have no doubt, the enemy is doingthe very same thing with your destruction in mind. As aresult, sooner or later (usually sooner), you are boundto come under enemy attack. Enemy units will fireupon your units and your structures in an attempt towipe your force from the face of the planet. Enemyforces can also use battle cards, bombs and cratesagainst you.

The radar is your best defense against enemy attack.Keep an eye on the progress of enemy units (indicatedby enemy-colored dots) on your radar. When younotice a concentration of enemy unit activity, dispatchyour own units to deal with them before they gain theupper hand. Pay special attention to enemy activitynear your base. Once enemy forces have converged onyour base, it will be very hard to stop them if you arenot prepared.

Your military rank, as well as that of your troops, is areflection of your experience and success in battle. There are a total of six player ranks and four unit ranksattainable (see list below). When you first start out, your rank is sergeant. As you gain experience andovercome the enemy in battle, you will move steadilyup in rank.

Your current rank is indicated by the revolving ranksymbol in the lower left portion of the main game screen.

Your rank as a commander is determined by thenumber of enemy kills you have achieved with yourunits. As your rank increases, so does the number ofcredits allotted to your command for each budgetallocation period.

The ranks a player can achieve are (from lowest tohighest):1. Sergeant2. Sergeant Major3. Lieutenant4. Major5. Colonel6. General

Your units can move up in rank too, depending on eachunit's performance in battle. As a unit moves up inrank, it moves faster, does more damage to the enemyand absorbs less damage when hit.

While some of the Chosen feel sympathy for those leftbehind on Earth, virtually all believe they did what hadto be done to ensure the survival of the human race. The Chosen believe that the collapse of the Earth'secosystem was the inevitable result of humanity'ssurmounting of natural selection. The weak and inferiorwere not only surviving, but overpopulating the planetinstead of being culled out as nature had intended.

Now, they will do what nature is no longer capable ofdoing itself, rid the Earth of the weak to make room forthe strong...

THE 7TH LEGIONEarth in the wake of the Planetary Evacuation Programwas a virtual wasteland. Choked with disease andpollution, the planet exacted its fatal retribution onmillions of those left behind by the Chosen. It tookcenturies for the planet's ecosystem to begin to healand for the humans who managed to survive torebuild their decimated civilization.

The 7th Legion is the most powerful of the sevenmajor military legions on Earth. They are thedescendants of those left behind by the Chosenhundreds of years ago—those deemed inferior bythe P.E.P. Implementation Council and those lackingthe money to buy their way into the program.

The 7th Legion is comprised of strong, tenacioussurvivors, bred from centuries of hardship and toilon a planet that had become mercilessly harshtoward its inhabitants. They take great pride in their

The slavens favored by the 7th Legion were acquiredfrom the warlords of the Deadlands. The warlords'selective breeding has made these animals extremelyobedient and responsive to warfare training.

Mortar Unit Price: 1,600These veteran soldiers carry powerful mortar weaponswhich make them particularly useful for assaultingbuildings and walls.

Commander Price: 2,000Commanders are cybernetically enhanced soldiers, oftenwith implants to the eyes, artificial lungs and more. Theyare fearless and inspirational to their troops, never wear-ing helmets so they can stare down insubordinates andget a clear view of their dying enemies.

Commanders carry rocket launchers, which are farmore effective against vehicles than are PL rifles.

Priest Price: 2,200These mysterious figures emerge from the Deadlandsto join the army of their choice. They fear no man andserve their chosen force with dedication. Rumored tobe born from legendary nomadic tribes still living inthe Deadlands, it is not known why they choose tobecome involved in the struggle for control of Earth.

Priests can bless units, healing their wounds. To bless aunit, select a priest, move the cursor over another unitand the cursor changes to "bless." Click to bless (heal)the unit and Priests must draw on their own vitalitywhenever they use their power to heal. Consequently,

Priests can also invoke a special attack utilizing theeffect of a battle card. To activate this attack, drop acard onto the priest, and then attack something (or holddown the Ctrl key and attack the ground). The energyof the card will be released in a special attack.

TANKSMarauder Price: 3,000A light tank, armed with twin low-caliber assaultcannons. Weak armor, but its speed and rapid firecapability make it versatile when engaging foot troops.

Oppressor Price: 4,000A medium tank, designed for engagements with otherarmored vehicles. This tank sports a single high-calibercannon with armor-piercing rounds. Good for destroy-ing structures and enemy vehicles.

Avenger Price: 3,800The long-range assault cannon of this tank is excellentat doling out heavy damage from a distance; however,it is not turret mounted and the vehicle must stop toattack. If well protected, the Avenger can causeenormous damage to unsuspecting targets. Its poorarmor makes it ill-suited for close range combat.

TANKSCrusader Price: 3,000A light tank that sacrifices better armor for speed. Itspayload is a single medium-penetration shell weapon. This tank was the mainstay of the 7th Legion's forcesin the inter-legion battles for the remnants of the Earthand is still favored by many tank commanders.

Crucifier Price: 4,000This Medium tank is one of the newer, more devastat-ing designs developed by the emerging technologyadvancement division of the 7th Legion. Featuring twindestructor cannons, this tank can rip lighter units andbuildings to shreds.

Tormentor Price: 4,000This long-range artillery tank features a turret-mountedbarrel, allowing the tank commander to maneuverfreely while launching shells into enemy ranks.Although unable to deliver as much damage as theChosen's fixed-barrel Avenger, the Tormentor equalsthe Avenger in range and bests it in maneuverability.

Purifier Price: 7,000This unit is armed with a hi-tech artillery device, theworkings of which have never been revealed to itscommanders. The single barrel sends strikes of light-ning against its foes making it a truly devastatingweapon when engaging enemy units. However, it is notvery effective against buildings.

To command a Purifier is an honor second only tocommanding a Faith Hammer tank.

Its relatively lowrate of fire (inferior to the Chosen's Dominator unit) isnot an issue for 7th Legion commanders, who prefer todeliver crushing blows rather than many weaker strikes. The controllers of these units love to crush the enemyunderfoot. The Inquisitor's lasers are capable of melt-ing away tank armor very quickly.

Revelator Price: 7,500This banner-carrying AC, armed with the standardtwin-laser system, is also armed with missile packs, todeliver extra punch in combat. It features enhancedarmor and a heat dissipation system that increases thepower to its lasers. This unit is an inspiration to the 7thLegion troops and is often used to lead deep penetrat-ing strikes into the heart of the enemy force.

STRUCTURES

The Nova Price: 7,600This unit delivers a volley of missiles, tightly focusedon their target. The Nova's range is inferior to theRedeemer's but able to destroy vehicles and buildingswith ease. The Nova is well armored for close engage-ments but less accurate than laser-equipped units.

Redeemer Price: 8,000This unit's payload is an enormous, extremely powerfulrocket. However, because of the size of these projec-tiles, the reload time is very slow. The damage andrange of this AC make it a dangerous threat to even themost well-defended base. A group of Redeemers candestroy buildings in a single strike.
