Our Dedications to

Dr.Yoji Akao- Father of QFD

MFD for Design & Development

( Annexure to Taoist Directions for Design &

Development)

Why an Annexure /Second Book?

• The first book titled ‘ Taoist Directions for Design & Development – DFM

Handbook for Design Engineering Professionals ‘ released during the Indian

Technology Congress 2014 had been the maiden book for the author and it is the

first DFM Handbook in the International arena where any design professional

can understand on what is DFM and how to do a DFM.

• The book had become an experiment to apply eastern thoughts of Taoism to

Western thoughts of DFM –where the author had shared his loud thoughts of

equating Design with Yang & Yin with Manufacturability.

• After three months of publishing this book ,

• The author had been fortunate enough to read the

• Annotated /Explained verses of ‘Tao Te Ching ‘ – by Derek Lin.

• To quote Derek Lin ,’’in the West the Tao has veered away from the genetic roots & taken on an aura of exotic mystique .Those of us who cling to this misconception may be surprised to encounter Asians who casually speak of the Tao of Jesus or the Tao of Science. On the other hand if we connect with the original meaning ,we will see that the Tao is truly for everyone ,regardless of religious orientation-or lack thereof.’’

• As per Tao Te Ching –

• ‘Thirty spokes run in one hub.

• In its emptiness ,there is the function of a vehicle.

• Mix clay to create a container ,

• In its emptiness ,there is the function of a container .

• Cut open the doors & windows to create a room,

• In its emptiness ,there is the function of a room.

• Therefore ,that which exists is used to create benefits.

• That which is empty is used to create functionality.’’

11/7/2016Engineers InnoVentures 6

• Tao of Design For Manufacturability –now redefined by the Author as:

• “Sixty-four Modules (spokes) join in one

• Tao of DFM (Hub).

• In its emptiness, the’ Design ‘or the’ Yang’, there is the function of

• ‘Manufacturability’ or the ‘Yin’.

• That which exists is the Manufactured Product which is used to create benefits:

• That which is empty, the Design is used to create Functionality.

• The author went further into the uniqueness of

• Interactions of Yang with Yin for Creativity apart from the

• Normal output of human populations .In total confirmation of the internal Thoughts ,the author got a few medical /scientific supports from the Researchers on internal structure of brains of men( yang ) and women ( yin}

• Both Yang & Yins have complementary talents of having a ‘nothing box ‘in Yang &

• A Big box of ‘internet of things’ in Yin.

You can view a nice video on the recent –rediscovery of the above in

Pennsylvania University in USA by visiting the weblink given below .

• Dr Sanjay Ramaswamy in his Arizona State University’s report on DFM Methodologies has expressed that “Insufficient Scientific base under the softwares and enormous data are compiled within the computer or software.

• Human intervention and feedback are rare.,DFMA methods have little efforts at the conceptual stage where most of the product cost is fixed .&Insufficiency due to the inability to provide RE-DESIGN suggestions to modify shapes in the case of unsuitable designs.” The above inputs are the starting points for this TDFM.

You can find in other methodologies of DFM that there will be monotonous rules based rigors.

In our Tao of DFM which has rightly split all the systems of manufacturability into eight and also all criteria also into eight ,you can find that Tao of DFM has rightly deviated from the conventional monotonous routes for easy analysis of doing a Gap Analysis System-wise and criteria –wise .

TDFM gives most importance to Operation Process Sheets and gives a mandatory requirement of analyzing each and every cost centre by integrating the Process Engineering Division with the parent Design Engineering Division as a dynamic collaborator in the mission of bringing home a viable DFM to any entity .Manufacturability Check- lists are to be done for all Cost Centres that too with a simple MS Excel Platform where some entries /values can be simply automated with NIL COST . .

The ultimate aim is to offer a DFM with real simplicity , reliability & flexibility with a soft touch

‘Out-of-Box ‘Thinking & Tao of DFM :

Tao of DFM was evolved due to an ‘out-of-box ‘ thinking by the author who

was the first man to find parallels between

Taoism & DFM –like Dr Fritjof Capra -‘The Tao of Physics ‘famous- who

found parallels between Taoism & Physics .Dr Capra had gone through the first

book and appreciated the basic concepts . Dr David Anderson of

www.design4manuafcturability.com has gone through the same book and

blessed the author telling that the author is a ‘DFM Expert’ from India .

When the same papers were presented to the international product

development association in USA , the paper just missed to hit the top :but got

the valuable comments as ‘more innovative & more practical’.

One thing, I have learnt is that an author is expected to substantiate his

thoughts before the intelligentsia –hence this preview .

Then there was a ‘Storm by QFD’ towards the author when he was in US

during July / August 2016.Lucky enough to get acquainted with a few leading

Professors & Specialist s on QFD –which drew the author to QFD.

11/7/2016Engineers InnoVentures 13

• The most important comment on QFD is as follows :

• “ QFD has been largely ignored by upper management and non-technical groups in U S. business houses ,it’s considered too complex But in this book we’ve developed a QFD Method that is simpler & easier to use . We have field tested it and have seen employees from all levels learn it quickly and use it successfully ..we predict that ,you’ll want to make it a permanent part of your business planning ‘

• ( ‘The QFD Book’ by M/s Lawrence R Gunta &Nancy C .Praizler )

11/7/2016Engineers InnoVentures 14

• The cross-functional thinking of the author just ‘out-of-boxed ‘ QFD

of Dr Yoji Akao & the authors of ‘The QFD Book ‘ and the result is

the birth of MFD – Manufacturability Function Deployment- now

being presented to you all for your usage , implementations and

professional feedback . .

• The author is open to continuous development of MFD further based

on feedback from the fields.

11/7/2016Engineers InnoVentures 15

• To avoid duplication the author has consciously avoided a few repetitions of

thoughts between the Two DFM Handbooks for obvious reasons.

• The author requests the readers to keep both e-books side by side for ease

of reference .

• Expecting your feedback .Thanking you .

• With Cheers ,
