    TOKO TOKO

In Maori tradition, the Tokotoko (a ceremonial carved

walking stick) is a symbol of the authority and the statusof a speaker on the Maori marae (meeting ground).

It tells of the history from which that authority comes. The carving may represent an ancestor or a legend.

Often you would see great Maori orators swinging theirTokotoko about to make a point in their speech.

These magnificent talking sticks were carved out of Kauri,Totara and Rimu woods. It was believed that the talkingsticks were charged with the energy of everyone who hadever touched them. The members of the hui (gathering)would tune into the energy of the others in the group, andby doing so, they would know instinctively who to pass the

talking stick to next. As the speaker received the talkingstick, everyone in the group would focus their energy onthe speaker, to give them clarity of thought and confidence

    to share their important message.

    MAORI CONCH SHELL TRUMPET

Taonga poro are the traditional musical instruments ofthe Mori people of New Zealand.

The instruments previously fulfilled many functions withinMori society including a call to arms, dawning of the newday, communications with the gods and the planting ofcrops. They are significant in sacred ritual and also fulfill astory-telling role. Many of the sounds of the instrumentsand tunes are imitations of the sounds of nature, including

the wind, the seas and the natural world of birds andinsects. Today, these instruments are used more often bypeople at most Mori or grand ceremonies.
