    PoPuLAR MUSIC ROCK MUSIC

    Known as the pop music, mostknown and appealing to the public

    since 1950. Main purpose is to entertain in its

    most modern and youthful way it can be. It means youthfulness thus itappeals more to youth.

    Folk MUSIC

    Western MUSIC The first music called jazz originatedin New Orleans, Louisiana, UnitedStates around start of 20 th century.

    Uses blue notes syncopation, swing,call- and- response, polyrythm andimprovisation as a key element.

    It blends African American musicalstyles with western music techniqueand theory.

    The instruments used in marching bands and dance band music at theturn of the century became the basicinstruments of jazz brass, reed anddrums using the Western 12- tone

    scale

    Th e genres of music that originatedin the western world (Europe and itsformer colonies) include Westernclassical music, American Jazz,country and pop music, and rock nroll.

    Musical genres in the Westerntradition include:- Medieval music - Romantic- Renaissance - Contemporary- Baroque music

    It includes both traditional music andthe genre that evolved from it duringthe 20th century folk revival. * Sometypes of folk music are also called

    world music. It was transmittedthrough an oral tradition.
