President’s Corner by David Brighton

Most people join the BMW CCA “becauseof the cars and stay because of thepeople.” That is a common phrase heardat meetings and it is really true. But whatmost people don’t realize, there are manyreasons to become a member of our club. There are a high percentage of memberswho don’t utilize all of the privileges ofbeing a BMW CCA member. It is quiteobvious that we have the best carmagazine on the market, and themembership fee is well-worth receivingthe Roundel in the mail every month.

But what are some other “memberbenefits” that are not quite so obvious? Most BMW dealers and many BMWindependent shops offer discounts onparts and labor to club members.Members can apply to receive a rebatewhen purchasing a new or certified pre-owned BMW and we have an ombudsmanwho can help with disputes related to themanufacturer, dealer, repair shop, partssupplier and others. We have technicalservice advisors who can diagnoseproblems with your car when you cannotfind an answer in other places.

Frank Patek, Executive Director of theBMW CCA has worked diligently to createagreements with many national

companies to offer discounts for BMWCCA members. A partial list of thesecompanies are; Sprint cellular, Worlds ofDiscovery attractions, Crowne Plazahotels, Hertz and Avis rentals, BrooksBrothers clothing, Liberty Mutualinsurance, Michelin tires, HPDE insuranceand VISA rewards cards. Most recentlyOffice Max has become a discountpartner and is offering discount cards tobe used on purchases at their stores.Attendees of this year’s Annual Dinnerand Awards Banquet will be rewardedwith one of these new cards. So next timewhen you are thinking, “is my annualmembership fee worth the cost?” I wouldsay that you cannot afford to be without itif you own a BMW.

2013 Points SystemThroughout the year, you earn points for doingvarious club activities. Each point earns you a raffleticket to draw for a prize at the end of the year. Please make sure to sign in at each event, and letus know if you assist in signing up a new member.✔ Chair an event --- 10 points✔ Sign up a new member --- 10 points✔ Attend your first event --- 5 points✔ Assist with an event --- 5 points✔ Write an article for the newsletter --- 5 points✔ Attend O’fest --- 3 points✔ Bring a potential new member to an event --- 3 points✔ Attend an event --- 1 point

What made you decide to purchase your firstBMW? I wanted to trade in two cars (an OldsmobileToronado and a Nissan 300ZX) and get one car thatcombined the luxury and sportiness of both. That ledme to my first BMW, a 2000 328Ci. I liked it so much(and the club activities & members) that I laterreplaced it with another new one.

Do you have any fun stories about your car? Bothwere purchased at Kimberly BMW in Davenport, myold home town. I had good luck with the first one, andmy brother in Wisconsin liked it a lot. He wound upgetting a 2005 325Xi. Later, I started to make plans fora European Delivery of my new one – as reported inNewswerks previously. I sold the 2000 to him (for hisson) and he accompanied me to Munich in October of2009 to pick it up. We visited relatives near Frankfurt, drove theNurburgring, andtoured Berlin andAmsterdam. The carwas left at the portin the Netherlandsin late October. Itarrived statesidearoundThanksgiving. I hadhoped to pick it up inDavenport beforeChristmas andproceed toWisconsin, but theaccessories I hadpurchased were notquite installed whenI arrived. Kimberlylent me an X3 forthe holiday, and I gotit on the way back.

What is your favorite BMW Club event and why? Isall a good answer? The picnic and annual dinner arealways good. I’ve been to several driving schools atMAM, a Fall Colors Tour, another cruise, oneOktoberfest, and several tech sessions. Perhaps themost fun AND rewarding event is helping out as an in-car coach at the Street Survival schools.

Do you have a dream car? Those new Gran Coupe’sare awfully pretty – just like an Aston Martin Rapide, but cheaper! So is the 503 from the 1950’s. A 2002might be fun. On the non-BMW side, give me an oldOldsmobile. How about one each from 1937, 1941,1950, and 1955?

Other cars in the garage: 2005 Corvette, 1958Chevrolet Impala

For the last 8 years or so, we’ve had a Tire Rack®

Street Survival teen driving safety course in Iowa eachfall. We have a NEW angle on it this season – inaddition to the fall events in the Des Moines and QuadCities areas, we’re also doing a spring school at theIowa Speedway parking lot in Newton.

Date for the event is Saturday, May 18. Our chapter isleading the effort on this one, with help from the DesMoines Valley SCCA folks for equipment and somevolunteers. DMVR’s club racers will be competing onthe infield road course that day, while we use theparking lots to teach teens to learn a lot more aboutcar control and accident avoidance than they ever sawin driver’s education. Plans are to use a break in theracing action after the students complete the StreetSurvival curriculum in late afternoon to also take thestudents out for a congratulatory lap around the trackbehind the pace car!

The course is aimed at ages 15-21; students musteither have a driver’s license or have held a learner’spermit for at least half of the period required beforelicensing by the state of issue. Students learn what itfeels like when the car is about to lose traction, andlearn how to avoid or correct the problem. StreetSurvival is an excellent prep for winter driving in Iowa, but also applies to many other instances where dealingwith traction is an issue – gravel roads, rain, oremergency situations.

Check out www.streetsurvival.org for moreinformation about the course. The site includes a verygood video showing how the training is done in thestudent’s car by a trained instructor on a closedcourse.

Registration for students is on the Street Survivalwebsite under the Registration/School Schedule tab.For local information, the contact is registrar BeckyBrighton ([email protected]).

Please help us to publicize the event to parents ofpotential students: contact friends, family, and co-workers who have young drivers in their households –the life you save may be theirs!

We are not going to have as many of the usualvolunteers available from DMVR because of their racecommitments this time. So we really need additionalhelp from Iowa Chapter members as in-car instructorsand as volunteer workers at the event. Please contactBecky or myself with any questions about how you canhelp or what it takes. Street Survival is a great way tocontribute back to our communities – let’s all make it a‘smashing’ (pun-only, not literal) success! Staffvolunteers register on Motorsportreg.com – look for iton their schedule as the Iowa Chapter event on May 18.

2013 North Central Regional Caucusby David Brighton

Annually, representatives fromlocal chapters of the BMW CCAmeet as a national caucus or as aregional caucus to discuss clubissues, and 2013 was the year forthe smaller regional meeting. Thisyear the North Central RegionalCaucus met in Detroit fromJanuary 18-20. The president ofeach local chapter, along withthree other members of the Boardof Directors, attend to discuss

topics that are relevant to eachlocal club as well as topics that areimportant to the BMW CCA. Topicsthat were discussed this year dealtwith “customer satisfaction,”communication with our members, and what actions should be takento provide a quality “memberexperience.”

A benefit of meeting in Detroit thisyear, attendees of the caucus,

including the Iowa Chapter Boardof Directors members DavidBrighton, Chris Kjellmark, AlisonBell and Nicole Smith, were able toattend the Detroit InternationalAuto Show on Saturday evening.Since the host hotel was on thecampus of Ford Motors, the groupalso had time to visit the HenryFord Museum on Sundayafternoon before the late flighthome.

Here is a photo of the board members with North Central Regional Vice President Michael Lingenfelter.

The Joys of DetailingConsiderations For ChoosingThe Best Brush For The Task

When choosing whichbrush to use for a task, many of us will considerthe size and the type ofbrush head as well as thelength and grip of thehandle. But, we often forgetto consider one of the mostimportant factors and thatis what kind of brush fibersshould I use.

There are probably more types of brush fibers tochoose from that you care to think about. Let’s take alook at just some of the more common ones that youare likely to come across in your choices for the care ofyour BMW.

Polypropylene – A very durable bristle that is mostoften used for scrubbing. Its durability extends toresisting acids, solvents and most chemicals.

Polystyrene – Another very durable material thatresists water, oil and chemicals. Often used foraggressive cleaning and has excellent flexibility. Thebristle ends can be flagged (finely split) for use in bodybrushes. Both the Polypropylene and Polystyrenebrushes are good choices for cleaning engines, wheelwells, etc.

Tampico – Derived from a vegetable fiber that comesfrom the Agave plant grown in Mexico. This fiber has asoft to medium texture and is naturally resistant toliquids, solvents and heat. Holds liquids very well andworks great for cleaning carpeting.

Nylon – There are many different grades availablevarying from stiff to the new softer Nylex bristles thatare often used for washing. Well known for its longwearing ability and resistance to rot, mildew, alkalis, most solvents and heat. Brushes for scrubbing tires willoften use nylon whereas brushes for wheels will useNylex which is a much softer form of nylon that won’tscratch.

Horsehair – An excellent choice for removal of finedust and particles from smooth or polished surfaceswithout scratching. Also is a great brush to cleanupholstery and fabrics.

Boars Hair – A very durable and soft hair that isnaturally thick and will hold a tremendous amount ofwater. Maintains its shape and will not become limpwhen wet. Most often used as a wash brush as itsproperties make it an excellent choice as well as thefact that it will not scratch delicate paint surfaces.

China – A soft texture that is naturally tapered to a fineend point. Often selected to be used for windowcleaning or for dusting and fine detailing due to itsgentle removal of fine particles and its ability to reachinto small crevices.

Brass Wire – A soft metal bristle that is often used toremove residues from most metal and durable coatedparts without running the risk of severely scratchingthe surface. An excellent choice for aggressive metalcleaning.

Stainless Steel Wire – Highly resistant to corrosionand rusting. Used where non-corrosive cleaning ofparts with a cleaning compound is needed or forremoving rust, metal burrs, paint, etc.

Steel Wire – A mild, low carbon steel that is oftengalvanized to resist corrosion. Usually has a brightdiamond finish and a high tensile strength springtemper for lower fatigue. Used in similar situations asthe stainless steel wire.

The next time that you are choosing a brush, considerthe best fiber to use to help you get the best results. Thanks for reading and as always, enjoy your ride . . .

June - Driving School Time Again by Fred Bell

We have some traditions in ourchapter, and one of the longest-standing is our Longest Day DrivingSchool, held every June since 2002.This year’s details: MidAmericaMotorplex (near Council Bluffs) isthe Where, June 7-9 is the When, and YOU are the Who. The traditionalways includes some of the sameelements - fun on the track, goodtimes with fellow club members andenthusiasts, and several socialgatherings as part of the wholeevent. And each year, we try to addsome new features to complementboth the instructional side and thefun factor.

MidAmerica Motorplex (MAM) isone of the best tracks available forlearning more about highperformance driving and car control. The track layout is considered verytechnical, so figuring out the bestline through its large variety ofcorner shapes can be challenging.Meanwhile, it has very low penaltiesfor doing something wrong, unliketracks that are lined with steel(“Armco”) barriers or concrete walls.Advanced drivers can keep workingon new techniques with only thegrass as the main casualty fromerror. And, novices find MAM veryeasy to get used to while learning

what high-performance driving isabout.

Saturday and Sunday are whenmost of the action happens forstudents; Friday’s track session isreserved as an orientation andskills-polishing day for instructorsand advanced students.

Just go to the chapter website andyou’ll find the LDDS page,www.bmwia.org/longest-day-driving-school. Or, register online atwww.Motorsportreg.com. Hurry –we have a very useful eventmemento that is free to those whoregister by May 7, our way of sayingthanks to those who sign up early. Our host hotel, where we alsoprovide the Friday eveningreception, is the SpringHill Suites inCouncil Bluffs, phone 712-256-6500. We have a block of roomsreserved; just ask for Iowa BMWClub. The room block is in effectuntil May 5. Final deadline forregistration – Monday, June 3 orsooner if the school fills up.

Oh – we missed the Why in theleadoff! In no particular order –because it’s fun, it can be achallenge, it can help you in streetdriving skills – and it’s fun!
