2020 MARCH - APRIL
MARCH 19TH & APRIL 16TH LUNCHEONS
MEET OUR MARCH SPEAKER: ED OBAUGH Ed Obaugh was born in
Harrisonburg, Virginia and
spent his early years in the
small farming community of
New Hope, Ohio. In the
summer of 1954, when five
years old, Ed and his
family moved to the Lake
Magdalene area of Tampa.
He graduated from
Chamberlain High School in 1966. While
there, he met a lovely young lady named
Sharon Cline, and on May 25, 1968, they
were married. Ed and Sharon are blessed
with two daughters, two grandsons, two
granddaughters and one great grandson!
Ed joined the United States Navy in
September of 1967,
completing his boot camp at
the Great Lakes Navy Base in
Illinois. There he received
education as a jet engine
mechanic. His first duty station
was, for two years, at the NAS
Meridian, Mississippi. His
second duty station was at the NAS
Lemoore, California where he was assigned
to Attack Squadron VA-212 (A4-E Skyhawk
Aircraft.) (Cont. Pg. 2)
MEET OUR APRIL SPEAKER: JENNIFER HANES
Jennifer was born to Mary
and Phillip Hanes and
grew up in Ocala, Florida
as the middle girl
between two brothers. At
a young age Jennifer
developed a deep interest
in animals. She rescued abandoned
squirrels and birds from the back yard,
enjoyed watching the trainers at Sea World,
and took care of the family dogs – Rascal,
then Snickers and Spunky. There’s an
interesting family video of Jennifer, age
two, telling the family Golden
Retriever to “sit and shake!”
While in high school,
Jennifer read a newspaper
article about a puppy raiser
in Ocala who volunteered for
Canine Companions for
Independence, a national non-profit
organization that provides assistance dogs
to children, adults and veterans free of
charge. She contacted the puppy raiser and
began a mentorship program to assist the
volunteer at dog obedience classes and
social outings at the local mall, restaurants
and stores. Jennifer attended her first
Canine Companions graduation a few
months later and was amazed to see the

MEET OUR MARCH SPEAKER: ED OBAUGH (CONT.) Ed also spent an eight-month tour of duty on
the USS Hancock Aircraft Carrier (CVA-19)
off the coast of Vietnam in the Gulf of
Tonkin. In November, 1971, he received an
Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy. Ed
describes his service in the Navy as “a
wonderful experience...it created memories
that one could never forget.”
After his Navy discharge, Ed worked with
Southern Weighing and Inspection Bureau
(SWIB) for 13 years. In July,1987, he was
hired by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s
Office. Ed proudly describes the many long
hours on his motorcycle as “an incredible
ride...25 years of
ministry!” He retired 7½
years ago after 25+
years of outstanding
service!
In 1986, Ed made the
important decision to join Exciting Idlewild
Baptist Church. He later became the faithful
Teacher of Joint Heirs Bible Fellowship
Class...a job he still holds. He happily calls
this time as “20+ years of loving on people!”
During these many years of service, Ed has
learned that “Scriptures are not about
people, but how God
can do things through
obedient people!”

difference these dogs
made in the lives of
their new handlers.
Jennifer graduated
summa cum laude
from Union University
in Jackson, TN with a
degree in psychology/
biology with an emphasis in math/computer
Science. During her college breaks, she
drove from Ocala to Orlando to volunteer at
Canine Companions and spent hours doing
“everything they’d let me,” such as
monitoring groups of dogs in community play
outside, cleaning kennels, scooping poop,
and giving every dog a bath on Fridays!
Jennifer accepted an Instructor Assistant
position with Canine Companions in January
2006, packed her car, and drove to Santa
Rosa, CA to begin her career at the
organization’s headquarters. She moved to
Oceanside, CA for an apprentice course and
then arrived in Orlando, FL as an employee
in November 2006. Since her start in Santa
Rosa, she’s held eight titles with the
organization, recently
as Client Services
Program Director for
the Southeast Region.

MARCH AND APRIL LUNCHEON MUSICAL TALENT

MEET OUR APRIL SPEAKER: JENNIFER HANES (CONT.) In this role, she works with applicants who
are interested in receiving an assistance
dog, students participating in a two-week
training course to be matched with a dog,
and 400 graduate teams living in eight
states. She also works with training a staff
and development team and is often called
upon to give media presentations for the
public.
Jennifer enjoys teaching
dogs and people, and
appreciates the challenge
of working with a variety
of personalities and
temperaments in both.
She says, “Training dogs
is rewarding, but my
biggest joy is meeting the
people whom we serve.” She works with
people of a variety of ages, backgrounds
and needs, and wants to help others catch a
vision of how an assistance dog can
enhance someone’s life by serving as their
ears, hands and/or feet.
MEET OUR MARCH MUSICAL TALENT: GEARY JARRETT My wife, Susan, and I
have been active
members of Idlewild
Baptist Church since
2002, after moving here
from Lynchburg, VA.
Coming from a much
smaller community and church, we initially
felt a little overwhelmed in the larger church
setting of Idlewild. But we were amazed at
how easily and quickly we became a part of
this church family, thanks to the
encouragement of people inviting us into
their fellowship and my involvement in our
excellent IBC Music Ministry.
Music is a passion I
inherited from my
son, Dr. Scott Allen
Jarrett. For many
years Scott was
successfully
involved in important
music activities in the Boston, MA area.
Recently, he has started a new professional
chorus in Charlotte, NC - the Bach Akadamie
Charlotte - as well as serving as President of
the Early Music America national
organization. Susan has taken on new
responsibilities in her job at Bank of America
and continues to thrive in her important role
there. I remain self employed with my
business, JIL Technologies, where I provide
computer support for many people, including
our IBC seniors.

LUNCH ON YOUR OWN AT FRED’S MARKET
COST: $10
Cracker Country is an 1890s rural living
history museum focusing on hands-on
opportunities for everyone to learn
about old Florida. Located on the
Florida State Fairgrounds, the museum
holds a collection of 13 original
buildings dating from 1870-1912 which
were relocated from across the state of
Florida. Their buildings range from
public buildings like the Terry Store and
Okahumpka Train Depot, to private
buildings like the Carlton and Smith
homes. Today, the historically furnished
buildings recreate the lifestyles of the
past, and costumed interpreters portray
daily living as Florida pioneers.
Come join us as we visit a little of
historical Florida and learn what it
meant to live “back in the day.”

APRIL SENIOR TRIP
Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour - Adventuresome for the first time visitors
seeking flora and fauna or savvy Orlando travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-
path vacation experience won’t be disappointed when they discover the
Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour. Located on Lake Osceola in the quiet suburb
less than 10 minutes from downtown Orlando, the boat tour offers hour-long,
guided cruises through three of the seven lakes and two, narrow manmade
canals on the tranquil Winter Park chain. On any given tour, participants may
observe large cranes swooping waterside to snag a large fish or a lazy
alligator languishing on a nearby bank. Breathtaking views of opulent private
homes and exquisite estates sprawling along the shores are also a key
feature of the scenic cruise.
Morse Museum - The Morse Museum houses the world’s most comprehensive
collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933), including the artist
and designer’s jewelry, pottery, paintings, art glass, leaded-glass lamps and
windows. The Museum’s holdings also include American art pottery, late 19th-
and early 20th-century American paintings, graphics, and decorative art.

Sad News from Minnesota…
Please join me in remembering a great icon of the
entertainment community. The Pillsbury Doughboy
died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma
complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was
71.
Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin.
Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects,
including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California
Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and
Captain Crunch. The gravesite was piled high with
flours.
Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who
never knew how much he was kneaded. Born and bread in Minnesota, Doughboy
rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not
considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes.
Despite being a little flaky at times, he still was a crusty old man and was considered
a positive roll model for millions. Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three
children: John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven.
He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.
The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.
