11:30 am – *Depart for SPoT Coffee Shop in the former Hallman's Chevrolet showroom on East

Avenue. The building started life in the early 1900s, but was made-over in

Streamline Art Deco style in 1936. SPoT Coffee is a community meeting place for

neighbors and friends serving all day breakfast, light signature meals, gourmet pizza,

and dessert. Return approx. 2:00pm.

tenor saxophone, and Gabriel Piqué, baritone saxophone, as they perform music of

William Albright and Marc Mellits. No fee to attend. Return approx.1:30pm.

Library is offering a Tatting Demonstration at 2:00pm. Your grandmother may have

tatted doilies or edges on handkerchiefs and pillowcases. Over the years tatting has

changed. See examples and learn more about modern-day tatting. The program will be

held in the Fisher Meeting Room, no registration required. Pathways return bus will be

available for residents wishing to attend.

overview of New World bird migration, including mechanisms of navigation and

2:00pm – Presentation: Odenbach Shipbuilding Corporation in World War II with Marie Poinan.

In 1942, John Odenbach built a huge indoor shipyard in an apple orchard in the town

of Greece. The plant was only in business for five years, but it employed thousands and

Odenbach’s patented way of bending steel and rivet-less hulls revolutionized the

shipbuilding industry. The photos in this presentation are from the family and have

rarely been seen. Community Center

1:00pm – *Depart for the Rochester Museum and Science Center for the exhibit, Snowflakes Up

Close. Experience what it takes to photograph an extremely delicate and short-lived

subject—a snowflake. Find the stunning photography of Rochester Institute of

Technology (RIT) professor Michael Peres and original photomicrographs made by

pioneer snowflake photographer Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley on the Museum's third

floor. In the exhibit, visitors explore the scientific art of snowflake photography and

delight in the beauty of more than thirty snowflake images as they have never been

seen before. For a fully immersive experience with these ice crystals, guests walk

through Michael’s photographic process and examine a snowflake under a microscope

while answering the big question—are any two snowflakes alike? Admission fee is

$7.00. Return approx. 3:00pm

7:00pm – Saxophone Quartet, Students from Eastman School of Music. This 30 minute program

will include a variety of classical and easy listening music. Musicians will introduce the

instruments and provide some historical/compositional background for the pieces.

2:00pm – Presentation: Rochester City Historian Christine L. Ridarsky will provide an overview of

the woman suffrage movement as it played out in New York State from 1848 to 1917.

By exploring the wide variety of rhetorical and tactical strategies employed by women

throughout the long campaign, Ridarsky will reveal the complexity of the process and

the significant role played by women at all levels of the movement from Susan B.

Anthony to state leaders such as Jean Brooks Greenleaf and Ella Hawley Crossett right

on down to the thousands of unnamed women who organized meetings and went door

to door in their local communities. Community Center

The Harvard Business School Comes to the Eastman School of Music Thursday, March 16th 4:00 pm-5:00 pm

The case study method is a teaching tool that has served business administration programs for more

than a century. This approach highlights real business problems that develop students’ analytical

and decision-making abilities. The Harvard Business School has a virtual monopoly on the market

of case studies, but those that specifically target music institutions are few and far between.

Instruction in the areas of organizational structure, fundraising, marketing, media and technology,

community engagement, advocacy, and labor relations as they relate to musical arts organizations

is in short supply. The Eastman Case Study Series is the first of its kind to apply the case method

exclusively to business problems faced by musical arts organizations. Professor Michael Anderson

outlines the value and method of case study teaching and provides a glimpse of the wide range of

fascinating music institutions that have been profiled in the Eastman Case Study Series.

Michael Alan Anderson specializes in a wide range of issues related to sacred music from the

fourteenth through the sixteenth century, with emphasis on the saints and lay devotion. He is the

author of the book St. Anne in Renaissance Music: Devotion and Politics (Cambridge University

Press, 2014). Anderson is a two-time winner of ASCAP’s Deems Taylor Award for outstanding

writing about music, for articles published in 2011 (Early Music History) and in 2013 (Journal of

the American Musicological Society). He is also the 2012 winner of the Noah Greenberg Award,

given by the American Musicological Society for outstanding contributions to historical

performance practices. In 2013, he received the University of Rochester’s Provost

Multidisciplinary Award, which involved producing first recordings of medieval music supplied

to the newly-installed medieval gallery at the Memorial Art Gallery.

University of Rochester Courses:

Contemporary Moral Problems Monday, March 20th 1:00pm-2:00pm This lecture is a follow up lecture to the January series of lectures and will cover the topic

communism versus capitalism. The aim will be first to clarify precisely what the moral issues are

and second, to discuss the pros and cons with a view to helping people make up their own minds

on this issue.

Robert L. Holmes, PhD is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Rochester. He

received his PhD at Michigan University. His research interests include ethics, social philosophy,

and philosophy of war. He is author of The Ethics of Nonviolence, Nonviolence in Theory and

Practice and Basic Moral Philosophy.
