FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK: March 2017 Dear Quilters,

I have started this letter several times when I am not in a place to write it down. Then when I get to the computer to write it I forget what I was going to write!! Seems like that happens more and more. Just like going to your quilting space to get something that you have put away in a special place but that special place eludes you now that you are looking for it and it takes three times longer to find it. Sigh. But I do remember what I was thinking last night. This month is the Guild's 29th Anniversary. Do you suppose the founding members had any idea that the Guild would become this large? I haven't done any research on this but I suspect we are one of the largest non-affiliated charitable groups in the county. The latest spread sheet shows us to have 280 members. Which leads me to say, Special Events Committee has an anniversary party planned for us this month.

Author, teacher, fabric designer, and award-winning quiltmaker Nancy Mahoney will be our guest speaker. I saw the flyer for Paducah and Nancy has several classes she is teaching. You can see her in New Port Richey. Please sign up for her workshop at the Education table. Congratulations! The 2017 Opportunity Quilt was won by Helen Hanley. All the proceeds will be gifted to A.F.I.R.E. The 2018 Anniversary Album Quilt is being hand quilted now with those proceeds going to The Toymakers. Tickets available soon!! Kudos to the retreat committee. There was a lot accomplished in 4 days in spite of all the fun we had. If you have not been on a WPQG retreat, you are missing out on a wonderful time of fellowship and learning. We are all looking forward to the next one. A big “thank you and job well done” to Laura Vernola and her board. Laura has served as president a total of 4 years, 2012-2014 and 2015-2017. Here's to following in her footsteps. My mission is to encourage every member to get involved by joining a small group, serving on a Guild committee, attending a workshop/class, teaching and sharing their knowledge with others, meeting new friends, anything that will Color Our World. Last call!!

It seems that 50 or so of you have not yet renewed your membership. It is time to get it together. Find that form. Write that check. Find a stamp, find an envelope, mail it in. Let’s see you stuff that PO Box. Yes, you can still pay in person at the meeting, but really, you're 0 for 2 now. Who are you kidding? After all, who wants to stand in line wait-ing for us to do paperwork when there is visiting to be done? Really! All this hurry up is because the Directory goes to print soon and you want to be in it. So the rest of us can find you. ( Don't want to be found? Move to Las Vegas.) Also If you don't like your picture in the current directory, or you don't have a picture in the cur-rent directory or you are a new member, please find Janie Franco at the meeting and get your picture taken. Janie is a tall woman usually found wandering about carrying or wearing a camera. Follow her instructions, please. Finally, for those of you who are still wondering, the February meeting was attended by 124 members who signed in, 5 guest and 7 new members. MY QUILT ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH

FOR THE QUILT SHOW

“Oh yes it is, we all chimed in. Why do you think that?

It’s gorgeous! What do you mean, not good enough? Everyone

will love it.” On and on, we kept it up until she agreed to think

about it. She wasn’t confident about publicly showing her work,

even though she had already made a few quilts. WPQG was

her first guild and Show ‘n Tell during the meetings over-

whelmed her.

We printed the registration form, stood by to help her fill it out,

and then took a photo of the quilt. She was having “first show

jitters.”

Moral of the story….. If you are new to quilting or have been

dabbling in it for a while, the Quilt Show is the right venue to

show your art. Don’t be shy,

we all took that big step.

(Provide Quilt Store Quality-full 18” x 20”) that you bring in. We will be dividing the fabric into 2– 2 1/2 yard stacks. We will draw tickets—if you have two winning tickets, you will receive two stacks.

March – Author, teacher, fabric designer, and award-winning quiltmaker Nancy Mahoney will be our speaker and hold a workshop. Nancy has enjoyed making quilts for more than 25 years. Her beautiful quilts have been featured more than 100 times in national and international quilt maga-zines. Nancy has designed several fabric lines for P&B Textiles, along with dozens of patterns. Her class will be her Dot to Dot pattern. Fee for the class is $45 and will be held Wednesday, March 15. April - Tess, the owner of Scrap and Sew Quilt Shop will be our speaker on Borders and Bindings. May – Jann Warfield will bring her trunk show and workshop on Ice Dyeing. The workshop will be on Friday, May 19, Dye and Ice: Creating Fabric Uniquely Yours. Jann supplies 12 fat quarters per student, dust mask, tea strainer, latex gloves, containers, plastic spoon, Soda Ash (PH UP), Dye, Professional Textile Detergent, ice and class handouts. Students only need to supply a pair of kitchen gloves to fit them, a rag towel and permanent marker to mark their fabric. The kit fee nor-mally runs $35 and will remain that unless prices go up before then. Fee for the class will be $45.

I need your help, Ladies. This is my introduction into the world of Quilters’ Education. I was not trained to round up teachers to entertain you. My college degree (BA) is in Biology (pre-med), English Lit., and Studio Art. I can use a blow torch to change the shape of a stop sign and I know how to mix colors both on a canvas and with fabrics. But who am I going to put on stage in front of you?

Please supply me with the name/names of person of interest. I have already looked into Bonnie Hunter. She is one very popular person; she is booked solid through 2018! Checked out Tim Latimer; he does awesome free motion work. Are you interested in fabric painting or thread painting - two very different techniques?

I need feedback. If you are interested but your buddy is not, tell me your thoughts anyway.

Check the coupons – they must say “manufacturer’s coupon” somewhere on the face of the coupon – NO Publix, Target or other local stores. Please sort by food and non-food. Shalimar MHV Homeowners Association is having a Flea Market & Bake Sale March 31 & April 1 from 9 to 2. Come out and help support the HOA. It would be greatly appreci-ated, as the clubhouse facility is provided at no charge to the guild for our weekly groups. February’s Charity Sew was The Hearts Quilt. It was a great success. Many members joined in the fun. There were a few new fac-es. All are welcome. Come join us for the next Charity sew! See you soon!

I want to thank everyone for the

"caps for canines" that I have

been collecting. They go for

buying comfort dogs for G I's

coming home with PTSD. It does

not have to be caps alone, it can

be anything “plastic” lids, coffee

lids, butter dish lids, detergent

caps etc.

I also collect the metal tabs from

aluminum cans (not bottle CAPS)

for the Shriner's Children's

hospital. Please keep them

separate from the plastic caps.

The VFW has been very

impressed with the response.

I drop off 3 garbage bags full

every month & 1 of them is from

our guild.

Let us do as well for our food

pantry. The collection has been

pretty good but I think we could

do better. There is such a need

at this time. Nearly every food

pantry in Pasco is running out of

food and money for the ones who

need help. We are so lucky, look

at all the fabric we can afford.

Monthly Art Quilt Challenge

Each month all guild members will be challenged to make an ART quilt.

You may interpret the word ART as you like.

The object of this challenge is to get you to think outside your comfort zone -try a new

technique and new fabrics.

All guild members are encouraged to participate. Small group attendees need to send in their quilts with someone who can turn them in and return them to you. Winners will be selected by viewer’s choice voting at the meeting and the top three winners will be displayed in the (locked) glass display cases at New Port Richey Rec & Aquatic Center until the next guild meeting.

The rules are not too complicated:

1. Each month’s theme will be last month’s Fat Chance fabric selection listed

previously in the newsletter.

2. The size must be no more than 18” wide by no more than 23” long.

3. Each quilt must be no thicker than 1”. (They will not fit in the glass display cases)

4. You are not permitted to put your name anywhere on the front of the quilt

5. You must include your name on a label on the back

6. Entries must be a quilt (you all know this rule!!!)

7. All appliqué edges must be sewn. Raw edge is not acceptable.

(you know this one too, no fusible only)

8. Quilts must be turned in to Trish Wallick by 9:30 AM so there can be

arrangements for voting.

9. Viewer’s choice votes must be turned in by 10:45 AM

10. Winners will be announced at the end of the guild meeting, on the website or

Face Book and in the newsletter

11. No sleeve necessary on these challenge quilts.

As always, by participating in this challenge, you give permission for your quilts to be

photographed and used for advertising and promoting the guild and its activities.

Tiny Shirts For Preemies

Twenty-Five and Four is a non-profit dedicated to provid-ing free shirts to premature babies. We will be fabricating and donating these shirts to Medical Center of Trinity. You can help by donating fab-rics that are 100% cotton, 100% flannel, both of which would be appropriate for ba-bies. You can also help by coming to Wednesday March 29th Charity Sew at Shalimar. We need sewers as well as people to trace and cut out pat-terns, turn the shirts right side out, press the shirts and add finishing touches. All month long we gather in small groups with different interests, making new friends, helping each

other to learn, getting new ideas, learn new methods of working on our favorite projects and helping

the less fortunate by providing items for them. Please come to any of the meetings listed below.

ATTENTION Dear Jane enthusiasts (and wanna be enthusiasts...)

The Tuesday Evening Nimblers will be re-charging the monthly meeting of the Dear Jane Club for the year

of 2017. We will meet the LAST Tuesday of each month at 6pm at Contractors Institute Learning Center

We meet the fourth Thursday of each month. Created to help the long arm operator increase their skills and overcome prob-

lems with long arm machining. Group meetings are held at members’ homes, showing samples of work and machine operation.
