March - April 2018 14 Adar - 15 Iyar 5778

Dear Schomre Israel Family,

Our grandson recently started to work for Google in Tel Aviv. As in many offices with alarge number of observant Jews, there is a Minyan every day for Mincha.

He told me that the Minyan meets on the 37th floor, but it’s really not the 37th floor. Itseems that the builder wanted to have a 50 story building, but couldn’t get the necessarypermits. It was only approved for 42 stories.

So what he did was to simply number the building the floors differently. Instead of starting with the groundfloor the first floor being one, he simply called it the ninth floor. And thereby his 42 story building had 50stories, at least in his mind.

The story illustrates how sometimes we create an artificial reality according to the way we perceive things, not the way they really are.

As we celebrate Pesach this year and commemorate the ancient exodus from Egypt and the miraculousevents that took place following this historic event, let us not forget to marvel about the events that takeplace within our own time.

The miraculous rebirth of an independent Jewish state 70 years ago, following the attempted annihilation ofour entire people, is cause for celebration and recognition of G-d‘s hand in our daily life. The city of Jerusa-lem being reunited and under the sovereignty of the state of Israel 50 years ago further indicates G-d‘scontinued providence. The very moving speech by Vice President Pence to the Israeli Knesset is a reflectionof a believer in G-d’s hand in history.

May we be further inspired to see reality and appreciate the fulfillment of our dreams through recalling theevents of old. Have a wonderful and meaningful Pesach and May we all be inspired to clearly see G-d’s prom-ises and thank Him with a full heart shehechiyanu vkiymanu vhigianu layman hazeh.

With best wishes,

Rabbi Eliezer Langer

How to make an Eruv Tavshilin

An eruv tavshilin for cooking refers to "mixing of [cooked] dishes", whereby one prepares a cookedfood prior to a Jewish Festival when the Festival is followed by Shabbat. The process of eruv tavshilinworks in the following manner. On the sixth day of the Festival, Thursday, April 5th, 2018, the headof the household, or his designee, should set aside a baked item such as bread or matzoh, and a cookeditem such as meat, fish, or eggs (i.e. a food that is eaten along with bread). Each item should preferablybe the size of one egg. He or she should then recite the blessing of "Baruch...Al Mitzvat Eruv". It isnow viewed as though meal preparations for Shabbat have already begun before the Festival. There-fore, Shabbat meal preparations may continue on the Friday of the Festival (Erev Shabbat). Once done, the eruv covers all household members and guests. The foods set aside for the eruv should be saved, and should be eaten on Shabbat.

A Little Story ...

Pesach is just around the corner. As we do our Pesach shopping and preparations, here is a nice story tokeep in mind with thanks to Rabbi Baruch Lederman of Congregation Kehillas Torah in San Diego.

Rabbi Y. Charif of Slonim was known for his sharpness and insight. Every year as Pesach approached, he re-ceived a multitude of queries concerning the intricate laws of the holiday.

One year, he received a distressed looking woman on Erev Pesach morning, asking for an audience with theRabbi. The Rabbi ushered her into his study.

The woman was none other than the wife of R' Nota Hirsch. R' Nota was a successful businessman and aprominent active member of the Jewish community. He was one of the biggest philanthropists in the entireregion.

"Rabbi," she began, "I am at my wits end. My husband has suffered severe business setbacks that havewiped him out. He has no money left - not one cent."

"I am so sorry to hear this," responded Rabbi Charif, "I didn't know a thing about it."

"That's just it," she explained, "He is too humiliated to let anyone know. For years, we have always had thepleasure of contributing generously to the mitzvah of Maos Chittim (Passover food for the needy), and nowI do not even have the ability to provide for our own Pesach - and the first Seder is tonight. I do not knowwhat to do; I cannot ask anyone for help - my husband's pride would be devastated. I didn't even tell himthat I was coming here."

The Rabbi mulled over the problem for a few moments and came up with an idea, "Tell your husband that to-night in shul, when he greets me after services, he should whisper in my ear."

"Why should he do that?" You must trust me and do as I say. Make sure he whispers in my ear."

That night, the synagogue was packed with people, all dressed in their Yom Tov (holiday) finery. Everyonewas radiant with happiness and holiday spirit, looking forward to the Seder they would enjoy at home withtheir families that evening. As was customary, each went up to the front to personally greet the Rabbi.

When R' Nota Hirsch went up to greet the Rabbi, he followed his wife's instructions (though neither he norshe had any idea why), and whispered into the Rabbi's ear, "Gut Yom Tov (happy holiday) Rabbi. HappyPesach."

Upon hearing this, the Rabbi jumped up and said in a loud voice, "Oy vey! I am so sorry to tell you this. It isall chometz (not kosher for Passover). It is all chometz!"

Everyone in the shul heard this, and assumed that R' Nota was describing some accidental occurrence thattook place in their kitchen, and asking the Rabbi to rule whether or not it was kosher. Immediately one ofthe onlookers said, "Don't worry R' Nota, I have extra matzo in my house, I will bring you over some so thatat least you will have matzo for the Seder." Another piped up, "We have extra wine, I will bring some overso you can drink the Four Cups." Another man chimed, "My wife made plenty of extra chicken soup, we willbring you over some for the Seder meal."

A Little Story continued from page 3

Word of the "kashrus accident" spread throughout the town. There was literally a stream of people com-ing throughout the night, each bringing a dish or two, from fish to salad to soup to honey cake. By thetime the night was over, they had enough food for a week. Thanks to the Rabbi's wisdom and sensitivity,no one knew or even suspected anything about the family's severe financial straits.

In the coming months, things turned around completely. By the next Pesach, R' Nota Hirsch was re-stored to his original wealth - only now, he was even more grateful to Hashem (G-d) and more philan-thropic than ever.

We have received numerous requests for financial assistance for Pesach. To join in helping others sendyour generous contribution to Congregation Schomre Israel and mark it for Rabbi's Fund - Maos Chittin.

PURIM INFORMATION

1. Purpose: Purim is celebrated in commemoration of the deliverance of the Jews in Persia fromthe hands of Haman, the King’s officer, who plotted their death. The events narrated in the Book ofEsther took place in the middle of the fifth century B.C.E.

2. Date: The 14th of Adar. The 15th of Adar is known as Shushan Purim since in the capital,Shushan, the Jews had to defend themselves against their enemies on the 14th and celebrated theFestival a day later.

3. Name: It is called Purim from the word ‘Pur’ which means “lot” and refers to the evil machina-tions of Haman who cast lots to determine on which day he should arrange for the slaughter of theJews of Persia.

4. Observance:

(a) In the Synagogue: On the eve of Purim and on Purim morning the Book of Esther ischanted to a special melody. At the mention of Haman, the children stamp their feet or turn their“graggers” (noisemakers) in derision of the name of the arch enemy. Three-cornered Purim pastries(Hamentashen) are served.

(b) In the Home: Being a joyful Festival, Purim is the occasion for parties and celebrations.A festive meal, Seudah, is the occasion for a happy family gathering. Charity is distributed andthere is an interchange of gifts, particularly food gifts, between friends and neighbors. It mightbe noted that the character of Purim is really unique and quite unlike other festivals in the spirit ofits observance. There is a deliberate absence of the solemn and highly spiritual character whichdominates in other festivals. Purim rather is observed in a mood of sanctioned frivolity. From daysof old, masques and parades and even bonfires have been elements in the day’s festival program.Purim was kept as a carnival day. In modern times something of its spirit is found in the Purimparades and carnivals in Israel.

PREPARATIONS FOR PASSOVER

I. What and Why is Chametz?

When the Israelites emerged from Egyptian slavery, they left in great haste. Consequently, they couldnot bake their bread in the usual manner. There was not sufficient time for the dough to rise and forthe bread to become leavened. The product of such leavening process is called Chametz. It consistsof grain or flour mixed with water and allowed to stand for a brief period without being baked completely.

In order to relive the experience of our ancestors, we avoid Chametz throughout the entire Passoverfestival. We neither eat it nor own it during the holiday. We try to use up whatever products we havebefore the festival. What we cannot use we store away and sell to a non-Jew through the Rabbi of theSynagogue. A form for this purpose is found in the bulletin.

Before the festival, we conduct a symbolic search of the house (Bedikas Chametz) to ensure that allChametz has been removed from our premises. On the morrow following the search, we burn what wehave found along with any other leftover unsold chametz (Bi-ur Chametz).

During the eight days of the festival, we use only products that are free of Chametz and we eat matzahin order to experience the haste of our forefathers when they went forth from slavery to freedom.

II. Preparing for Passover

In addition to not using Chametz products during the festival, we also avoid the use of dishes and uten-sils which have been used all year round with Chametz. For that reason it is necessary to have two ad-ditional sets of dishes for Passover use. These are stored away in a closet throughout the year andbrought out for use only on Passover. At the same time, the year-round dishes and utensils are storedaway out of sight, during the Passover festival.

There are certain types of utensils that can be ritually cleansed - or kashered - for Passover use. A briefexplanation follows:

1. Silver and Metal Utensils

Silver, small pots and metal utensils without wooden handles may be kashered for Passover use. Theymust first be cleansed thoroughly and then allowed to stand unused for 24 hours. They are then com-pletely immersed in a kettle or vat of boiling water.

We might add that china, pottery and utensils that have different parts glued together, and items thatcannot be cleansed thoroughly (such as a sieve) cannot be kashered for Passover use.

Larger pots or kettles may be kashered by first cleansing them as above and then filling them with waterto the very top, allowing the water to boil and then placing a hot iron or stone inside the pot so that theboiling water runs over and down the sides of the pot.

Page 11: March - April 2018 14 Adar - 15 Iyar 5778 · "Why should he do that?" You must trust me and do as I say. Make sure he whispers in my ear." That night, the synagogue was packed with

FRIDAY MINCHA TIMES

11

2. Glassware

Glasses and glass plates which have not been used for hot liquids or solids during the year may bekashered for Passover by immersing them in cold water for a period of three days prior to Passover.Glass utensils, such as Pyrex, which are used with heat must be treated as china and cannot bekashered.

3. The Stove and Oven

Every part of the stove and oven must be thoroughly cleaned with a chemical cleanser. The top rangeand the oven must then be heated at the highest setting and allowed to stand for a period of one hour atthat setting.

In addition, during Passover, a special metal sheet is placed over the top of the range to prevent contactwith the Passover utensils.

4. Microwave Oven

Clean thoroughly, and pour boiling water directly from a pot which was on the flame onto all sides, top, bottom and door. Place a utensil filled with water in the oven, and operate the oven at its maximum set-ting until it is filled with thick steam.

III Passover Foods

Most foods that are used on Passover require Rabbinical supervision. This is especially true of proc-essed foods. It is important to realize that a label which indicates that a product is “Kosher for Pass-over” does not assure us of the supervision. Wherever possible, one should use products which havenationally-known Kashrut symbols. If not, it is important to check on the reliability of the particular Rabbiwho is giving the endorsement. Please feel free to ask in the event of any doubt on this matter.

1. Grain Products

All grain products require strict Rabbinic supervision for Passover use.

2. All Milk and Dairy Products require supervision.

3. Fresh Fruits and VegetablesAll of these may be used (except for legumes - peas, beans, rice and corn which are all treated asChametz).

4. Dried FruitsThese should carry a Passover endorsement.

5. Frozen Fruits and VegetablesFrozen vegetables maybe used for Passover only with Passover certification.

6. CosmeticsSome maintain that all cosmetics can be used for Passover inasmuch as they are not foods. This in-cludes toothpaste. Others have stricter opinions.

Twice a year we rid the house of bread: Tashlich at Rosh Hashanah, and before Pesach all chametz isremoved. On Rosh Hashanah many symbolically cast away breadcrumbs, representing sins, on thebanks of a river. On Passover we are not permitted to have even a morsel of bread or products whichcame about through rising, reminding us of the hasty exodus from Egypt and ridding ourselves of slug-gishness. The following list of the various types of Tashlich breads and their symbols is easily adaptableto Passover.
