Whether or not you can try a hearing aid prior to purchasing one depends on a couple of different factors. First and foremost, not all hearing care providers offer hearing aid demonstra-

tions prior to purchase. This is something you would need to ask your audiologist or hearing care professional once the recommendation for a hearing aid has been made. Secondly, the same hearing aid does not work for all hearing losses. In other words, hearing aids do not fit into the “one size fits all” category of merchandise. Therefore, even if hearing care providers do offer a hearing aid demonstration period prior to purchase, they may or may not have a hearing aid in their demo stock that is appropriate depending on the degree and configuration of hearing loss present. With that being said, if a hearing care provider offers the opportunity to demo a hearing aid prior to purchasing it, they will most likely have hearing aids in stock that are suitable to fit most degrees and configurations of hearing loss. Typically, hearing aids may be returned. Most hearing aid pur-chases include a trial period during which time you are able to decide if you would like to keep the hearing aid or not. The length of the trial period varies by state, but is typically around 30 days. Though the hear-ing aid may be returned within the trial period, there will most likely be a fee for doing so. This fee is usually nominal, but can vary widely from

hearing aid demonstrations

provider to provider. Therefore, it is advisable to ask about any fees that may be assessed prior to purchasing a hearing aid. It is important to address any questions or concerns you may have regarding a hearing aid purchase upfront. Your hearing care provider should take the time to explain their policies and procedures to you. The more information you have the less likely it is that you will run into any unwelcome sur-prises. A hearing aid purchase can definitely be a big investment, but it can be a sound investment when armed with complete information.

Why & How

Positive Thinking Brings Positive Results

By Dr. Ilesh Kurani, MD,

QC Medical Group & Weight Loss Clinic

Positive thinking brings positive results. At times, we do not get positive results because we do not believe this with conviction. However, we have the power to bring about positive results for

ourselves. Our systems are made up of three elements. One is our physical body (B), the second is our mental component, or our mind (M), and

the third is our spiritual component (S). (B + M + S = SELF) Each equals almost one-third (1/3) of our self. (1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1 ‘self‘). Life is all about moments. It is in the ‘frames’ - the past, the cur-rent, and the future frames. We pass from one frame to the other. Current life is now – your current moment is occurring as you are read-ing this. We cannot physically go back in time – back to last year, last

Page 7: March Quad Cities Healthy Cells 2012

March 2012 — Quad Cities — Healthy Cells Magazine — Page 7

month, or even yesterday. In the same way, the physical body cannot go into the future. What you will be doing in the next half hour is a future event. As we go into that future event, this current event will become the past event, and that future event will become the current event. God has given us mind and spirit so we can physically enjoy each and every moment. Though the physical body cannot go back into the past or ahead into the future, the mind and spirit can. So when we go into the past or future with our mind and spirit, we think about things that have happened in the past. Many of these thoughts are negative, which means we are bringing negative thoughts into the current frame. In the same way, when the mind and spirit bring negative thoughts about things that may happen in the future, like doubts, or fears like “What if I don’t do this? What if this happens?”, we bring negative thoughts and negative emotions into our current moments. The result of our negative thinking impacts our current frame as well as our past and future frames. Physically, you are fine. (+1/3 body—B) Your mind is negative because of the past mistakes you made, or future fears (-1/3—M). The spirit is negative because of that emotion (-1/3). So, let’s look at the results. +1/3 -1/3 -1/3 = -1/3. This means that you are negative in the current frame, and in a few minutes, this becomes your future. And that is why we wind up with negative results. So, if you have a doubts, fears, negative feelings or any kind of negative emotions in the current moment, your future moment will be negative. If you stop thinking negative thoughts, and try to think positive thoughts and enjoy the current life, your future will be bright.

Grocery store shelves and restaurant menus are often crowded with foods containing solid fats, added sugars and high levels of sodium. During National

Nutrition Month®, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) is helping Ameri-cans understand how to get the most nutrients they need from the foods they eat, all surrounding this year’s theme: “Get Your Plate in Shape.” “When people eat foods that have added sugars and solid fats, they are consuming extra calories they don’t need,” says registered dietitian and Academy Spokesperson Angela Ginn. “These ‘empty calories’ are found in a number of foods and drinks and offer little-to-no nutritional benefits.” Foods high in solid fats (like sausage, shortening and cream) and added sugars (such as regular soda and pas-tries) should be considered occasional treats rather than regular options. Eating these foods on a regular basis can cause you to consume more calories than your body needs in one day. “Replace these foods with nutritionally sound choices, like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy,” Ginn says. “Eating occasional treats is okay. Just make sure to balance out those treats with healthier options and get plenty of exercise.” In addition to limiting foods high in solid fats and added sugars, consumers should also be aware of high levels of sodium in foods, especially pre-made options like frozen meals and canned soups and vegetables. Foods containing

high levels of sodium are contributors to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. “The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend consum-ing only 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, which is about one tea-spoon of salt,” Ginn says. “While meeting this recommendation may seem hard at first, choosing foods that are lower in sodium is one big step you can take towards meeting this goal.

Ginn offers tips to choose healthier options and “Get Your Plate in Shape”:

Choose foods and drinks with little or no added sugars. “It is smart to look for foods that have no added sugars, like unsweet-ened apple sauce or unsweetened whole-grain cereals,” Ginn says.• Drink water throughout the day. For variety, add lemons, limes or

cucumbers to your water or try carbonated water.• Choose low-fat or fat-free milk or 100-percent fruit juices.• Eat fresh fruit salad for dessert.

Eat fewer foods that are high in solid fats. “Solid fats can increase your risk for heart disease,” Ginn says. “You can reduce this risk by choosing healthier oils and lean meats.”• Instead of regular ground beef, opt for extra-lean ground beef.

Ground turkey and chicken are also available in lean options.• Grill, broil, bake or steam your foods instead of frying.• Cook with healthy oils like olive, canola and sunflower oils in place of

hydrogenated and partially-hydrogenated oils.• Opt for fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt and cheese.

Cut back on sodium. “Much of the sodium we eat comes from prepared meals and foods eaten away from home. This can be significantly reduced by eat-ing fresh foods,” Ginn says.• Instead of salt, use herbs and spices to season foods, and avoid salt-

ing food before tasting it.• Do not add salt when cooking pasta, rice and vegetables.• Read the Nutrition Facts Panel to compare sodium content of foods

such as soups, broths, breads and frozen dinners, and choose the healthiest option.

• Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh meats, poultry and fish, beans and peas, unsalted nuts, eggs and low-fat or fat-free milk and yogurt.

Ginn also recommends cooking different dishes at home. “This allows you to control what you put in your meal,” she says.

Neck Pain

Causes and Care

The neck (cervical spine) is composed of vertebrae that begin in the upper torso and end at the base of the skull. The bony vertebrae along with the ligaments (which are comparable to

thick rubber bands) provide stability to the spine. The muscles allow for support and motion. The neck has a significant amount of mo-tion and supports the weight of the head. However, because it is less protected than the rest of the spine, the neck can be vulnerable to injury and disorders that produce pain and restrict motion. For many people, neck pain is a temporary condition that disappears with time. Others need medical diagnosis and treatment to relieve their symptoms.

Cause Neck pain may result from abnormalities in the soft tissues—the muscles, ligaments, and nerves—as well as in bones and joints of the spine. The most common causes of neck pain are soft-tissue abnor-malities due to injury or prolonged wear and tear. In rare instances,

infection or tumors may cause neck pain. In some people, neck prob-lems may be the source of pain in the upper back, shoulders, or arms.

Inflammatory Diseases Rheumatoid arthritis can destroy joints in the neck and cause severe stiffness and pain. Rheumatoid arthritis typically occurs in the upper neck area.

Cervical Disk Degeneration (Spondylosis) The disk acts as a shock absorber between the bones in the neck. In cervical disk degeneration (which typically occurs in people age 40 years and older), the normal gelatin-like center of the disk degenerates and the space between the vertebrae narrows. As the disk space nar-rows, added stress is applied to the joints of the spine causing further wear and degenerative disease. The cervical disk may also protrude and put pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots when the rim of the disk weakens. This is known as a herniated cervical disk.

Injury Because the neck is so flexible and because it supports the head, it is extremely vulnerable to injury. Motor vehicle or diving accidents, contact sports, and falls may result in neck injury. The regular use of safety belts in motor vehicles can help to prevent or minimize neck injury. A “rear end” automobile collision may result in hyperextension, a backward motion of the neck beyond normal limits, or hyperflexion, a forward motion of the neck beyond normal limits. The most common neck injuries involve the soft tissues: the muscles and ligaments. Se-vere neck injuries with a fracture or dislocation of the neck may damage the spinal cord and cause paralysis.

Other Causes Less common causes of neck pain include tumors, infections, or congenital abnormalities of the vertebrae.

When Should You Seek Medical Care? If severe neck pain occurs following an injury (motor vehicle ac-cident, diving accident, or fall), a trained professional, such as a para-medic, should immobilize the patient to avoid the risk of further injury and possible paralysis. Medical care should be sought immediately. Immediate medical care should also be sought when an injury causes pain in the neck that radiates down the arms and legs. Radiating pain or numbness in your arms or legs causing weak-ness in the arms or legs without significant neck pain should also be evaluated.

If there has not been an injury, you should seek medical care when neck pain is:• continuous and persistent• severe• accompanied by pain that radiates down the arms or legs• accompanied by headaches, numbness, tingling, or weakness

Many patients seek orthopaedic care for neck pain because or-thopaedists are specifically trained to diagnose, treat, and help prevent problems involving the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons. Although some orthopaedists confine their practices to specific areas of the musculoskeletal system, most treat a wide variety of diseases, injuries, and other conditions, including neck pain.

“The neck has a significant amount of motion and supports the weight of the head. However, because it is less protected than the rest of the

spine, the neck can be vulnerable to injury and disorders that produce

pain and restrict motion.”

Meet the Smith family. The Smiths are your typical multi-genera-tional family with very diverse financial and estate planning needs based on their ages and stations in life. In each edition of Healthy

Cells this year, readers are introduced to various members of the Smith family, and learn how they went about solving their financial and estate planning needs. This month we would like to introduce you to Gary Smith, who recently sold his business; Smith & Company. When Gary started Smith & Company he and his wife Julie had no vision of what retirement would be like or when it would come about. They were focused on growing the business and raising their two sons. Thinking about the “golden years” was not a priority. As the years went by and the boys grew, so did their savings. Coupled with assets in a retirement plan that Gary started at his company, the Smiths were beginning to accumulate some wealth. Things were going well and Smith & Company was growing and turning out profits.

professional planning

This increased the time and effort it took to keep a close eye on everything and stay organized. Gary knew that he needed to do a better job at keeping tabs on his investments. He just didn’t have the time or the expertise. Let’s fast forward and catch up with the Smiths now that Gary and his boys have reached a business succession agree-ment. Gary’s sons offered to purchase Smith & Company over the next five years. This structured buyout will leave Gary and Julie in a good position financially, but also create a need for them to get serious about their retirement planning much sooner than they had anticipated. Gary could no longer afford to take a casual ap-proach to his investments. Now he needed to ensure that he and Julie could make that money last and achieve the goals they had for their retirement.

Gary and Julie were out to dinner with their good friends, Steve and Karen, when the conversation turned towards the sons taking over the business. Although he was going to end up with a sizable amount of money, Gary was really starting to worry about whether it was going to last for as long as they needed. Steve shared that he used to have the same concerns until he found a great Investment Advisor in the Trust Department of his bank. He told him how much he appreciated the approach the Trust Department was able to take to ensure that Steve and Karen were going to be able to make their money last. Steve gave Gary his advisor’s phone number and sug-gested Gary give him a call and ask some questions about how he could accomplish his goals. Gary and Julie met with the Investment Advisor who asked them their vision for retirement. Gary said that he wanted to be sure they didn’t have to sacrifice the comfortable lifestyle they had come to enjoy. They both wanted to travel and

talked about how much they hoped they would be able to help their grandchildren pay for college. After hearing their goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, their Investment Advisor suggested that the most appropriate investment

objective model would be a balanced portfolio allocating roughly 50% of their assets into the equities market for long term growth and the other 50% into fixed income securities with laddered maturities and varying interest rates. Gary and Julie left the appointment confident that combining the assets of their savings, retirement plan, and proceeds from the sale of their business into one balanced portfolio was the right answer. This balanced total return concept for the Smith’s nest egg will serve as the outline for their retirement. Making sure that their money goes to work for them in the best way possible would give Gary and Julie peace of mind and the retirement that they envi-sioned. Chiropractic and Active Release Techniques®

By Kaminski Pain and Performance Care

The practice of chiropractic has benefited untold numbers of peo-ple for more than a century. Modern science and evidenced based research continues to validate each chiropractic patient

that has experienced relief of chronic pain or improved overall health. As the chiropractic profession has evolved, various accompanying treatment approaches have developed synergistically with chiropractic that enhance the long term healing effects associated with a general chiropractic office visit. One such treatment approach is a patented soft-tissue management system called Active Release Techniques® (ART). This article will highlight the particular unique benefits of Active Release Techniques®. Active Release is a soft tissue treatment approach that was de-veloped and patented in 1985 by P. Michael Leahy, a chiropractor and former test pilot for the United States Air Force in Colorado Springs,

CO. The basic treatment premise of ART® is to find, treat and remove fibrotic adhesions that can form within muscles, tendons, ligaments and adhere to nerve tissue. Adhesive, painful ‘knots’ that occur be-tween the shoulder blades are common examples of fibrotic, scar-like tissue texture and their presence indicates a degree of injury and inflammation. Unfortunately not all fibrous tissue is painful or obvious. This is clearly seen in our day to day practice at Kaminski Pain and Per-formance Care. It is very common to find that carpal tunnel or sciatic nerve tension patients manifest pain in one area of the body without any fibrous tissue at that site. Instead what we see is a remote site of neural entrapment that can be inches to several feet away. These injurious changes in the soft tissue form at a micro-cellular level as a result of acute trauma, constant tension or pressure, or overuse/re-petitive motion and can occur in any soft tissue. Consequently, ART®

has developed specific treatment protocols for muscle, tendon, liga-ment and peripheral nerve / nerve root. When these adhesions and scar tissue form within a particular structure, that structure literally shortens and weakens, which in turn reduces its mobility, creating an environment for decreased blood and oxygen flow, which in turn causes pain. Most interesting is the result to the entire chain that is affected and the antagonistic chain that must react. In our office we have seen both synergistic and/or antagonistic soft tissue at the source of the patient’s painful condition. This series of events include numerous peripheral nerve related conditions as described above along with back pain, migraine headaches, plantar fasciitis, TMJ pain, shin splints, tendonitis, rotator cuff syndrome, frozen shoulder and many other conditions. During a typical ART® treatment the practitioner uses their hands and a series of functional orthopedic / neurologic/ muscular exams to determine the texture, tightness and mobility of the particular tissues involved. We will challenge areas above and below the painful area looking for integrity and stability of all involved tissues so that we can arrive at an accurate diagnosis. The purpose of an ART® treatment is to improve the functionality of the impaired structures and restore relative motion within and between the various affected sites. Several unique characteristics distinguish ART® from other soft tissue treat-ment approaches. One distinctive characteristic is that the treatment is always applied in the direction of venous and lymphatic flow. The benefit of this approach is that it reduces pain and swelling while facilitating a more stable environment for healing to occur. Addition-ally, the actual treatment is applied with active patient participation, which facilitates a quicker turnaround for recovery and aids in re-establishing healthy movement patterns. Chiropractic is centered on the premise of restoring appropriate nerve function as well as mobility and functioning of spinal segments that are limited. All joints, by nature and practical reality, are passive. This means, the joints do not move unless the muscles, tendons and ligaments attaching to them move. Therefore, if there is any measure of tightness, weakness or asymmetry within the muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc., there will be constant stress on the joints due to dys-functional movement patterns. It is our belief that involving both chi-ropractic adjustments, when appropriate, along with Active Release Techniques® provides our patients with a very effective treatment regi-men. We then will begin re-training areas of dysfunction to establish normal movement patterns so that memory of “normal” can occur. Cancer. It’s a scary word and easy to get caught up with the word “colon” instead of the word cancer. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Anyone over 50 is at risk, but colon cancer survival rate is 90% with early detection.

Forty-five year old Gina Bubon is one who has beaten the odds and wants to save other lives along with her own. Diagnosed with colon cancer at the young age of 39 (a disease people often associate with the over-50 crowd) Gina is adamant that no one ignore colon cancer symptoms.

Gina’s Story “While I was getting my annual exam at my OB/GYN’s office,” recalls Gina, “a series of tests revealed I had microscopic blood in my stool. My OB suggested I see a gastroenterologist. While I couldn’t see any blood, my former gastroenterologist sug-gested it was probably due to hemorrhoids as a result of bearing two children. He said a colonoscopy was certainly an option, but only if I wanted to pursue the test. I had no risk factors: no family history and I wasn’t even 50. “As a mother of teens, though, any risk of cancer was too great for me. I decided to have the colonoscopy and in doing so, the doctor discovered a long tumor in my colon about the mass of a baseball. The thought of a misdiagnosis frightens me. I wouldn’t be here today if I hadn’t had the colonoscopy.”

Doctors removed the tumor. Luckily, the cancer had not spread beyond the confines of Gina’s colon so she did not have to undergo chemotherapy. “I feel so fortunate and blessed, but it was scary,” says Gina. Gina’s current gastroenterologist, Dr. Lauri Harsh, Eastern Iowa Gastroenterology, now examines Gina once a year for any sign of recurrence. “Dr. Harsh is just great and incredibly thorough,” says Gina. “I am proud to say I’ve been cancer-free for almost five years. I ask that anyone with symptoms to get a colo-noscopy. Take this seriously. Don’t take the risk. Life is too precious.”

Early Prevention is Key “Colon cancer can be a very aggressive cancer, especially at younger ages,” warns Gastroenterolo-gist Bettaiah Gowda, M.D., Gastrointestinal Clinic of the Quad Cities. “Often, the most common symptom is no symptom, so you must know your risk and if you are over 50, get the colonoscopy.” While the cancer can be aggressive, amazingly, early prevention can lead to a 90% survival rate. “We find precancerous intestinal polyps (abnormal growths in the colon or rectum) in about one third of the patients we examine,” adds Dr. Gowda. “The cancer can be very treatable when we can remove polyps early.” Lauri Harsh, D.O., Eastern Iowa Gastroen-terology concurs. “There is no reason to wait. If patients are already experiencing blood in their stools, there’s a chance the patient could already be in Stage 2 or 3, which means much more ag-gressive treatment, surgery and the prospects of chemotherapy. And, colonoscopy technology has

Page 17: March Quad Cities Healthy Cells 2012

improved. The patient is sedated, so the test isn’t something to dread.

Log On and Learn Your Risk March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Thanks to the Mississippi Valley Surgery Center Endoscopy, Eastern Iowa Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Clinic of the Quad Cities, anyone can log on to http://www.becoloncancerfree.com and take a 2-minute risk assessment. The results will indicate if there are enough risk factors to warrant a colonoscopy. In general, people over 50 are at risk, yet adult children and siblings of colon cancer patients need to be screened at younger ages. “When we looked at the best way to communicate the urgency to Quad Citians and surrounding communities the need to schedule a colonoscopy, we discovered there were few opportunities for people to assess their risk privately,” adds Dr. Harsh. Web visitors can also email friends and family to remind them of their potential family risks, learn more about the disease or where they can schedule a screening procedure.

Kidney Care Quad CitiesCelebrating One Year of Success

By Kidney Care Quad Cities

To provide excellent and compassionate care that you can

count on,” is the motto of Dr. Rajendra Dahal of Kidney Care Q.C. Dr. Dahal’s pa-tients agree with that motto. “He’s very smart and very easy to talk to,” says Doris Lancaster of Erie, IL, who has been a patient of Dr. Dahal for over five years. A resident of the Quad Cities for almost 20 years, Dr. Dahal has been com-mitted to providing the best quality kidney care to the Quad Cities residents. Kidney Care Q.C. opened with an office in Moline just over a year ago and Dr. Dahal and his staff are excited to be celebrating their one year anniversary. In addition to the Moline of-fice, Dr. Dahal also sched-ules patients in Bettendorf and East Moline. Born in Nepal, Dr. Dahal completed his high school education at St. Xavier’s School in Katmandu. He started his medical education in India before first coming to the Quad Cities in 1986, to visit family here. After continuing his education in India and completing an In-ternal Medicine residency and Nephrology fellowship in New York and Philadelphia, Dr. Dahal came back to the Quad City area to practice medicine. “I found the peo-ple of the Quad Cities very nice and friendly and thought that it would be the best place to raise my family.” Dr. Dahal specializes in all aspects of kidney disease

“Dr. Rajendra Dahal

Page 19: March Quad Cities Healthy Cells 2012

March 2012 — Quad Cities — Healthy Cells Magazine — Page 19

and is a board certified Nephrologist. “Not everyone who specializes in the kidney is board certified,” explains Dr. Dahal. “The board exam is a rigorous test that evaluates your knowledge regarding all aspects of kidney disease and its treatment.” “To pass the test would mean that one is fully qualified in that specialty.” “Every ten years, the board requires that the physician take the test to maintain their certification.” Dr. Dahal has been recertified both in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He is also a member of the Fellow of American Society of Nephrology. Most people aren’t even aware they have kidney dis-ease because the symptoms are not easily recognized. Early on, one may not display any symptoms. Blood tests are generally when the first flags are raised, and by that time it may be too late. Common symptoms of kidney disease are: nausea, loss of appetite, swelling of legs and feet, puffy eyes, itching all over the body, shortness of breath from fluid retention, and fatigue from anemia. Most of the time, by the time these symptoms appear, the disease has already progressed. “An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure aptly applies in kidney disease” says Dr. Dahal. People are at an increased risk of getting kidney disease if they suffer from hypertension, uncontrolled diabetes, obe-sity, smoking or taking non-steroidal medications, (over the counter pain medicines such as Ibuprofen) for a long period of time. Also, certain supplements and herbal medicines can cause kidney damage. Dr. Dahal’s advice to the patients would be to check with their primary care physicians before taking supplements and herbal treatments. Prevention was the goal of Susan Murphy of Bettendorf, who’s been a patient of Dr. Dahal’s for almost a year. “I’d never been to a Nephrologist,” explains Susan. “I was way overdue to see one.” “My medical doctor decided I should go because I have one atrophied kidney.” “Dr. Dahal is in-credibly kind, which is a really important thing about going to a doctor.” “And he’s really on top of things and very consci-entious of various medications that I take so they don’t affect my kidneys.” “So he and my primary doctor collaborate on that.” “He doesn’t miss a beat!” “The ultimate goal is to keep patients in good health so they don’t go on dialysis unless absolutely necessary,” explains Dr. Dahal. But he has an option for those that do need dialysis. DaVita Dialysis Center is opening on Utica Ridge Road in Bettendorf, and Dr. Dahal will also be sending his patients there for dialysis. The new clinic has the latest state of the art machines for dialysis. Water treatment sys-tem utilizes hot water circulation for daily disinfection, and a comfortable environment for the patients. Scott Krebsbach, the Regional Operations Director for DaVita Dialysis is proud to have Dr. Dahal as part of his team. “DaVita is excited to work with a physician who works tirelessly to provide the best clinical results for his patients,” says Scott. Howard Crane of Orion, IL is a new patient of Dr. Da-hal’s, “We are very impressed with him, he’s such a gen-tlemen,” gushes Howard. “I was scheduled to have an angiogram, and my cardiologist referred me to him. We really, really liked him, he was very straightforward, and got me back in shape. He told me something that was very pro-found. He said, ‘Heart medicine is good for your heart, but may affect your kidneys.’ I never knew that. So he switched a lot of my medications around and I am a lot better. I had

my angiogram and Dr. Dahal was there to assist the cardiologist. Both my wife and I are very impressed and would recommend him to anyone.” Deb Johnson of Moline and her husband have been seeing Dr. Dahal for 7 years. “My husband has had two kidney transplants, with the last one being in 1985,” explains Deb. “When we moved back from Georgia, we were looking for a good Nephrolo-gist, and we found Dr. Dahal. He’s absolutely incredible. He’s compassionate, caring and goes beyond being just a doctor. We’ve seen hundreds of doctors throughout the years, and there is no comparison. He consults with the other doctors, and is on board with what’s going on and what everyone else is doing, because he wants to protect that transplant. His patients are number one in his life.”

mobile advancements

Regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, race, education or location, the number of Americans who are obese, diabetic or suffer from heart and other chronic diseases continues to rise. But new

technology is helping to improve patient wellbeing. By using mobile health products and services, such as those of-fered by mHealth, the wireless industry is dramatically reforming health-care via the three pillars of reformation: improving access and quality of care while decreasing costs. According to CTIA-The Wireless As-sociation’s semi-annual survey, there are more wireless devices (322.9 million) than Americans (315.5 million), so it makes sense to connect health and wireless technology.

Wireless health technology is efficient When doctors monitor their patients remotely, patients save time and money by cutting down on in-office doctor’s appointments. If there are irregularities with the patient’s health, doctors are made aware via wireless monitoring, and can properly address the matter by alerting their patient to visit the emergency room, or prescribe medication. In a field in which every second counts, doctors can improve care by receiving real-time delivery of medical tests and other vital informa-tion. With these tech innovations, patients can be prompted by text message to check their glucose level or take their blood pressure. Re-mote monitoring also means medical professionals can detect health problems such as cardiac arrhythmias.

Wireless healthcare benefits for patients• A recent CTIA and Harris survey found that physicians believe more

than one quarter of their patients would benefit from wireless ser-vices. In addition, 80 percent of doctors and 89 percent of specialists said they want to see continued investment in mHealth as wireless technology is able to improve and promote better healthcare.

• Wireless medical devices are especially beneficial for people in rural and remote areas who do not typically have readily available access to the best healthcare professionals. Regardless of one’s location, mHealth solutions eliminate inconsistency in healthcare by offering patients the opportunity to receive the best access and care.

• Currently, there are more than 17,000 mobile apps available for con-sumers to track weight-loss, exercise and fitness progress or to help manage chronic disease. For example, some apps help diabetics record their daily blood sugar levels. If the levels entered are harmful or dangerous, a text message alerts users with suggested steps and tips to prevent the condition from getting worse.

• Expecting and new mothers can receive free weekly text messages via text4baby. These messages coincide with the baby’s due date or

date of birth. Started in February 2010, and led by National Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition, text4baby has sent more than 250,000 medically underserved people health tips.

Wireless Healthcare Predictions• According to international consulting and marketing firm Global Part-

ners Inc., it is projected that 60 million people will benefit from using tools like remote patient monitoring devices by 2013 to prolong and improve their health.

• The U.S. currently spends more than any other industrialized country in the world on healthcare, approximately $2.2 trillion every year, but mHealth solutions could help save as much as $21.1 billion per year.

Thanks to the proliferation of mobile products and services, ease-of-use and continued innovation by the wireless industry, mHealth can dramatically revolutionize our healthcare system. But in order for mHealth to make a significant impact, the wireless industry needs more spectrum. It fuels the wireless industry so we can meet consumers’ demands for everything from accessing the mobile Internet to powering mHealth solutions.

To learn more about the future of mHealth and the wireless indus-try’s need for more spectrum, please visit: http://www.ctia.org/advo-cacy/policy_topics/topic.cfm/TID/59.

health effects

Could you be sacrificing your health in exchange for the conve-nience of a microwave oven? Of course if these ovens were really harmful, our government would never allow them to be on

the market would they? Or would they? Like radio waves or light waves that occupy a part of the electro-magnetic spectrum of power (energy), microwaves are also a form of electromagnetic energy. They are very short waves of this energy that travel at the speed of light, which is 186,282 miles per second! All wave energy changes polarity from positive to negative with each cycle of the wave and these changes happen millions of times every sec-ond in a microwave. The “agitation” of positive and negative polarities creates molecular friction, which heats up the food. This friction changes the molecules in food. Unfortunately, it also causes substantial damage to the surrounding molecules, often tearing them apart or deforming them. This deformation is known as “structural isomerism” and the change in the molecular structure of the food is by the process of radiation. Microwave energy from the sun and other stars is direct current based, while artificially produced microwaves, like those in the ovens, are produced from alternating current which forces a billion or more polarity reversals per second in every food molecule they hit. Micro-wave food contains both molecules and energies that are not present in food cooked in the conventional way. This was noted in Comparative Study of Food Prepared Conventionally and in The Microwave Oven, published by Raum & Zelt in 1992.

Microwaving baby formula changes certain amino acids into neuro-toxins (poisonous to the nervous system), and nephrotoxins (poisonous to the kidneys). Dr. Lita Lee; reported in the December 9, 1989 lancetIn Okla-homa, in 1991, a nurse warmed blood in a microwave that was needed for a transfusion. The patient died, which then resulted in a lawsuit. Dr. Hans Ulrich Hertel was a food scientist for many years with one of the major Swiss food companies that does business on a global scale. He was fired from his job for questioning certain processing procedures that denatured the food. An article appeared in issue 19 of the Journal Franz Weber that stated the consumption of food cooked in microwave ovens had cancerous effects on the blood. The research paper itself followed the article. He was the first scientist to conceive of and carry out a quality clinical study on the effects microwave nutrients have on the blood and physiology of the human body. His study was done along with Dr. Bernard H. Blanc of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University Institute for Biochemistry. Microwave foods also create new compounds called radiolytic compounds, which are unknown fusions, not found in nature. They are created as a direct result of radiation. The weakening of cell mem-branes by microwaves creates impaired cells, which then become easy prey for viruses, fungi and other microorganisms. According to Dr. Lita Lee Health Effects of Microwave Radiation - Microwave Ovens, changes are observed in the blood chemistries and the rates of certain diseases among consumers of microwave foods.

Page 23: March Quad Cities Healthy Cells 2012

March 2012 — Quad Cities — Healthy Cells Magazine — Page 23

Here is a sample of these changes:• Lymphatic disorders were observed, leading to decreased ability to

prevent certain types of cancers.• An increased rate of cancer cell formation was observed in the blood.• Increased rates of stomach and intestinal cancers were observed.• Higher rates of digestive disorders and a gradual breakdown of the

systems of elimination were observed. According to Russian researches, there is a 60-90% decrease in food value in all food tested due to a marked acceleration of structural degradation. Some of these changes involved a decrease in bioavail-ability of vitamins B, C, and E complexes, and essential minerals. Our bodies cannot afford such destruction of these important vitamins and minerals! The following is a conclusion based on research from the Swiss, Russian and German scientific clinical studies:• Continually eating food processed from a microwave oven causes long-

term brain damage by “shorting out” electrical impulses in the brain• The human body cannot metabolize (break down) the unknown by-

products created in microwave food• Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by

continually eating microwave food.• The effects of microwave food by-products are residual (long term)

within the human body.• Minerals, vitamins and nutrients of all microwave food are reduced or

altered so that the human body gets little or no benefit, or the body absorbs altered compounds that cannot be broken down.

• The minerals in vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals when cooked in microwave ovens.

• Microwave foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths. This may help explain, at least in part, the rapidly increased rate of colon cancer in the US.

• The prolonged eating of microwave foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human blood.

• Continual ingestion of microwave food causes immune system defi-ciencies through lymph gland and blood serum alterations.

• Eating microwave food causes loss of memory, concentration, emo-tional instability and a decrease of intelligence.

(material reference: GCNM)

Russian experiments showed that a human did not even need to ingest the material substance of the microwave food substances in order for it to have a negative effect upon the welfare of humans. Even exposure to the energy field itself was sufficient to cause such adverse side effects that the use of these ovens was banned in the Soviet Union in 1976.

and depression. Many people who practice mindfulness report an increased ability to relax, a greater enthusiasm for life and improved self-esteem. One NIH-supported study found a link between mindfulness meditation and measurable changes in the brain regions involved in memory, learning and emotion. Another NIH-funded researcher reported that mindfulness practices may reduce anxiety and hostil-ity among urban youth and lead to reduced stress, fewer fights and better relationships. A major benefit of mindfulness is that it encourages you to pay attention to your thoughts, your actions and your body. For example, studies have shown that mindfulness can help people achieve and maintain a healthy weight. “It is so common for people to watch TV and eat snack food out of the box without really at-tending to how much they are eating,” says Chesney. “With mind-ful eating, you eat when you’re hungry, focus on each bite, enjoy your food more and stop when you’re full.” Finding time for mindfulness in our culture, however, can be a challenge. We tend to place great value on how much we can do at once and how fast. Still, being more mindful is within anyone’s reach. You can practice mindfulness throughout the day, even while answering e-mails, sitting in traffic or waiting in line. All you have to do is become more aware—of your breath, of your feet on the ground, of your fingers typing, of the people and voices around you. Chesney notes that as people start to learn how to be more mindful, it’s common and normal to realize how much your mind races and focuses on the past and future. You can just notice those thoughts and then return to the present moment. It is these little, regular steps that add up and start to create a more mindful, healthy life. So, before you roll your eyes again, take a moment and con-sider mindfulness.

At some point in your life, someone probably told you, “Enjoy every moment. Life is short.” Maybe you’ve smiled and rolled your eyes at this well-intentioned relative or co-worker. But

the fact is, there’s something to it. Trying to enjoy each moment may actually be good for your health. The idea is called mindfulness. This ancient practice is about being completely aware of what’s happening in the present—of all that’s going on inside and all that’s happening around you. It means not living your life on “autopilot.” Instead, you experience life as it unfolds moment to moment, good and bad, and without judgment or preconceived notions. “Many of us go through our lives without really being pres-ent in the moment,” says Dr. Margaret Chesney of the University of California, San Francisco. She’s studying how mindfulness affects health. “What is valuable about mindfulness is that it is accessible and can be helpful to so many people.” Studies suggest that mindfulness practices may help people manage stress, cope better with serious illness and reduce anxiety

preventative health

One can often hear a similar phrase, “I am really stressed out this week, should I get a massage?” That’s what most people tend to think of when deciding to indulge in a ses-

sion. However, massage is not only a feel-good way to pamper yourself, but it can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health & well-being. According to the Mayo Clinic, massage is “increasingly being offered along with standard treatment for a wide range of medi-cal conditions and situations.” It can also be beneficial for “pain, stiffness, blood pressure control, infant growth, sports-related inju-ries, boosting immunity, and cancer treatment.” Aside from making your body feel better, massage can have some significant health benefits! It can improve your mental state by reducing stress and anxiety and allowing you to relax. As a result, it can lower your blood pressure, which will decrease your chances of developing a

disease from hypertension. Some athletes use massage therapy to help rework their muscles, giving them greater flexibility and range of motion. Pregnant mothers can use massage to help them with any pain they might be experiencing; it is also believed that massage will cause shorter and less painful labor. Additionally, massage im-proves circulation and reduces the risk of muscles cramping up. It can release helpful chemicals into the body, assisting your immune system. If you suffer from insomnia or migraines, massage can be a powerful tool to reduce your pain and help you sleep better at night. Massage therapy should be looked at as a preventative health measure, not just for luxury purposes. “The benefits of massage are cumulative. Clients often ask me, how often should I get a massage? As a general rule, I recommend, a one hour massage each month. While a one hour massage per month is good for most clients, other clients find benefits receiving massage every two weeks or even once per week,” added Michael Eskridge. Massage therapy is preventative medicine that can assist with preventing a disease or injury. By relax-ing the muscles of your body, you reduce the amount of stress placed on them. This could reduce the chances of you experiencing an injury when working out or lifting weights. Before you go get a massage, you should think about which type is right for you. What areas do you want to pay attention to; do you have a specific area of your body that is hurting? If you’ve suffered a specific injury, massage therapists can usually point you in the right direction as to which type of massage will best take care of your injury and prevent further injury in the future. Four common types are: • Swedish Massage: A gentle form of massage that uses long

strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to relax and help energize you.

• Deep-Tissue Massage: This massage technique uses slower, more forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective e tissue, commonly to help with the muscle damage from injuries.

• Sports Massage: This is similar to Swedish massage but is geared to-ward people involved in sport activities to help prevent or treat injuries.

• Trigger Point Massage; ocuses on trigger points, or sensitive areas of tight muscle fibers that can form in your muscles after injuries or overuse.

A massage session may last from 30 to 90 minutes depending on the type of massage and how much time you have. No matter what kind of massage you choose, you should feel calm and relaxed during and after your massage. Pain that is more significant than momentary discomfort could indicate that something’s wrong. If a massage thera-pist is pushing too hard, ask for lighter pressure. Occasionally you may have a sensitive spot in a muscle that feels like a knot. It is likely to be uncomfortable while your massage therapist works it out. If it becomes painful, make sure to speak up. A soothing massage can help you unwind, but that’s not all. “Massage therapy is an excellent way to maintain overall wellness. I recommend to my clients exercise, eat right, get plenty of sleep, and get regular massage therapy. Although most people can receive a massage, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor about any contra-indications. Usually it’s a simple phone call to your doctor.”

physical therapy

By Scott Dickman, Physical Therapist

You wake up in the morning tired and not wanting to get out of bed. Fighting the desire to roll

back over, you sit up, reach your arms overhead to stretch, open your mouth wide to yawn, and POP! A searing pain courses through the side of your jaw and into your ear. You wince with pain feel-ing unable to move. Or perhaps you’ve been to the den-tist for a routine cleaning. As the hygien-ist helps you up, you notice your jaw is very tired and tense. This soon turns into pain and leaves you unable to chew without significant discomfort. Who hasn’t experienced one of these scenarios? It’s not known how many people are affected by these symptoms, but it’s thought to be in the tens of millions. What is it? TMJ is a term commonly used to describe a joint or muscle disor-der more appropriately called TMD, or temporomandibular disorder. This is a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint (TMJ) and surrounding muscles that control jaw movement. Anatomy facts: The temporo-mandibular joint connects the jaw, or mandible, to the side of the head – the temporal bone. There are actually two of these joints, one located in front of each ear. They can be felt by placing a finger just inside the ear while opening and closing the jaw. Muscles attached to the surrounding jaw bone control TMJ

movement and allow us to yawn, chew and talk. When the jaw opens, the rounded part of the joint at the end of the mandible glides within the socket of the temporal bone. Closing is reversal of this movement. A disc made of collagen (similar to cartilage) exists between the two joint surfaces to make the movement smooth. This disc is attached to the bone and muscles by ligaments and soft tissue. Clicking can often be heard or felt with movement of the jaw. This is a common occurrence and is not indicative of TMD. As long as a person is functional and without pain, faulty movement or clicking in the jaw does not indicate that a person necessarily needs treatment. If clicking becomes painful, or function of the jaw is affected, treatment may be necessary and beneficial. Quite often, pain experienced in the TMJ area is subtle and typi-cally goes away without treatment. Many people experience this dis-comfort regularly but the transient nature of the pain makes it more of an inconvenience than a true problem. Some people, however, develop significant, long-term symptoms and require medical interven-tion in order to return to an improved quality of life. TMD is not completely understood by medical professionals so researchers continue to work at finding the cause and cure of this disorder. Although the cause of most TMJ problems is difficult to de-termine, it is widely thought that most TMJ issues can fall into three categories:1. Muscular, or myofascial, pain, which is the most common of the

disorders;2. Disc-related issues, often caused by injury or over-stressing the jaw;

or3. Arthritis or degenerative disorders of the joint itself.

It’s not uncommon for a person to have more than one of these issues. Additionally, these issues often co-exist with other problems including postural imbalance, whiplash, rheumatoid arthritis, fibro-myalgia, sleep disturbances, stress and tooth grinding or clenching of the jaw. So you may be asking, “How do I know for sure if I have TMD? And if I do, what can I do about it?” Because the exact causes of TMD are not clear, diagnosis is also not straight-forward. A visit to your doctor, dentist, or physical therapist may be beneficial to rule out other potential causes of pain such as ear infections, nerve-related pain, den-tal issues or various types of headaches. Although there are no certified specialties for TMJ disorders in dentistry or medicine, physical therapists are trained to identify and correct problems involving joints and muscles. They are also skilled at recognizing postural or mechanical issues that may contribute to jaw pain. Through continuing education and self-study, therapists gain additional training to become more proficient in dealing with TMD. Your health care provider will do a thorough examination of the head, neck, face and jaw and possibly recommend further testing. Once a TMD diagnosis is made, experts strongly recommend conser-vative management as more invasive measures have not yet received sufficient scrutiny to determine their safety or effectiveness. Following evaluation, a therapist will likely prescribe a set of exercises specifically tailored to fit your diagnosis. These may include stretches as well as movement exercises designed to restore normal movement patterns and muscle length. The spine may be examined since problems in these areas often contribute to TMD. Massage of tense muscles in the face and neck is used to normalize muscle tone. Joint mobilization techniques specific to your problem are utilized to stretch the joint itself. Ultrasound and electrical stimulation may be beneficial as well. In addition to simple strategies and physical therapy, a stabilization splint, or bite guard, may be recommended. This is an oral appliance that fits over either the upper or lower teeth. Although this is a widely

recommended treatment technique, the effectiveness of such a device is still under review. Since the majority of TMD problems are temporary, simple treatment is often effective and all that’s necessary. The following are simple prac-tices that will alleviate stress on the joint and surrounding musculature:• Eating soft foods, • Avoiding extreme positions with jaw movement as with yawning, • Applying Ice or heat to the area, • Avoiding unnecessary jaw movement (i.e. gum chewing, biting finger-

nails, chewing ice), and• Using medication prescribed to relieve abnormal muscle tension or pain.

TMJ pain, or TMD, is an extremely common, yet poorly understood, problem that affects many people everyday. Remember that discomfort from TMD will often go away on its own. The simple strategies outlined above are often all that’s needed to find relief. If these strategies prove ineffective, professional help is available from a physical therapist, medi-cal doctor or dentist experienced in treating this condition.

If conservative measures fail to produce results, this does not in-dicate that surgery is necessary. Surgical procedures to correct TMD are controversial and the long-term effects are not well studied. advanced healthcare

On the day Genesis Health System unveiled an ambitious plan to provide the most comprehensive cancer fighting program in the region, President and CEO Doug Cropper said the new Genesis

Cancer Care Institute would offer cancer patients in the region the next generation of cancer-fighting weapons. But Cropper wasn’t only speaking of technology. He was talking about social, emotional, spiritual and educational support being avail-able for anyone battling cancer. Since the day of Cropper’s announcement in 2008, Genesis has invested millions of dollars in the future of cancer care. It’s an invest-ment that is extending the lives of cancer patients and allows patients to receive the latest treatments close to home. Cancer care at Genesis has continued to evolve since 2008 to make the program the most advanced in the region. Care available from the Genesis Cancer Care Institute has been called “high tech and high touch.” The “high tech” at the Genesis Cancer Care Institute is diagnosis and treatment equipment, including daVinci robotic surgery, Tomo-Therapy, Trilogy with Brain Lab, a large bore CT simulator and i-Logic Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy. Genesis also has expanded infusion centers in Davenport and at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus to better respond to the volume of patients and their needs. The “high touch” aspect includes cancer nurse navigators to assist patients on their cancer journey, participation in the Live Strong survivor services program, cancer transitions to help cancer patients return to their regular lives, participation in a national trial to identify the psycho-social barriers to cancer treatment and collaboration with a Gilda’s Club on-site office. Last year, Genesis Cancer Institute expanded services at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus by offering additional infusion stations and breast cancer surgery available from Sara Glassgow, M.D. “We now have even more of a system-wide approach to cancer with the expanded services available at Illini,’’ said Sally Werner, Execu-tive Director, Genesis Cancer Care Institute. There have been many highlights on the journey to transforming cancer care in the region. Here are some of them:

2008• President and CEO Doug Cropper announced the Genesis Cancer

Care Institute and an $11 million investment in technology, renovation and expansion of existing cancer care facilities. The announcement came on the heels of Genesis becoming the first health system in the region to introduce digital mammography in 2007.

• The new Camp Genesis provided a free week of summer camp for children who have parents, grandparents or a sibling in cancer treatment.

• TomoTherapy Hi-Art treatment system, a specialized CT scanner and all-in-one treatment option, was introduced to the region.

Cleaning Secrets for a Healthy Home

Regularly cleaning your home does more than just make it look nice. It can also help alleviate the sneezing, sniffling and itchy watery eyes for your family members who have allergies

More than half of Americans test positive when exposed to one or more allergens, according to the Third National Health and Nutrition Ex-amination Survey. And more than half of all homes in the U.S. have at least six detectable allergens in the air, such as cat and dog dander, dust mites, pollen or mold spores. As the weather warms, more allergens are present in the air. Reducing the amount of allergens in your home can help improve indoor air quality and reduce your exposure to allergy triggers. But if your cleaning routine doesn’t specifically focus on allergen removal, and only moves dust around (sending allergens airborne), or incorporates products that can add pollutants to indoor air, it won’t do much to help minimize allergens in your home.

If you suffer from allergies and asthma, consult with your doctor on the best course of treatment, and clean with these simple tips - from the asthma & allergy friendly Certification Program, by the nonprofit Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) - to help control the allergens that can exacerbate allergies and trigger asthma.

Make Your Home Asthma & Allergy Friendly Consumers spend nearly $18 billion annually on asthma and al-lergy medications. But they also spend more than $20 billion on non-medical consumer products marketed for people with asthma and allergies, according to AAFA. While demand for such products con-tinues to grow, there is little to no regulation governing their product claims, the Foundation notes. AAFA’s asthma & allergy friendly Cer-tification Program helps consumers evaluate and verify the allergen-

reducing effectiveness of a variety of products, from cleaning supplies, air cleaning devices and vacuums to toys, bedding, home improvement products, paints, clothes washers and more. Created in 2005 in collaboration with a leading testing and certifica-tion partner, Allergy Standards Limited (ASL), and top medical experts, the program independently tests and certifies products that are more suitable for people living with asthma and allergies. The products that have successfully passed testing are “certified” and identified by a dis-tinctive certification mark on their packaging. You can learn about the certification process and certified products at www.aafa.org/certified.

Cleaning tips for Maximum Effectiveness• House dust is one of the most common irritants for allergy sufferers.

You may think dusting your home will help reduce allergens, but if you use a feather duster that simply lifts the dust off surfaces and into the air, you will actually increase airborne dust particles. Always use moist cloths or special dry cloths designed to trap and lock dust from hard and soft surfaces.

• Certain cleaning products can also contribute to airborne irritants, especially if they contain harsh chemicals, strong odors or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Choose products that contain none of these irritants, but also beware of “green” labels, as some of these solutions may be made with natural allergenic ingredients, too, such as lemon oils, tea-tree oils or coconut extracts.

• A vacuum that leaks more dust than it captures can make your in-door air quality worse. Use a vacuum that has a HEPA filter and tight seams and seals to prevent particles from leaking out while you vacuum. Also, choose a style that requires minimal exposure during canister emptying or bag changes.

• Rodent dander and cockroach particles are common household asthma triggers. However, some pesticides may do more harm than good for people with asthma and allergies. If you have a pest prob-lem, look for an exterminator with expertise in integrated pest man-agement and who can advise you on traps and solvents that are safer for people with asthma.

• Cat dander is present in most U.S. homes, even where no cats have lived, studies have shown. Your cleaning routine should include fresh-ening linens in your bedroom, where cat or dog dander can settle, becoming food for dust mites. Place mite-proof bedding on your mat-tresses and pillows. Wash sheets at least once a week in 130-degree water to kill mites and their eggs.

• Mold can grow anywhere in your home where moisture is present, and mold spores are a common asthma and allergy trigger. To re-move mold and mildew look for cleaning products that help kill and prevent mold from returning. Also, keep household humidity below 50 percent and fix leaky pipes and cracks to reduce standing puddles of moisture where mold can prosper.

• Gather stuffed toys, where dust mites, mold and pet dander can accumulate, and wash them in hot water and dry completely before using again. Place stuffed toys that can’t be washed in the freezer for 24 hours, then rinse in cold water to remove dead mites, and dry completely. Try to turn this into a monthly habit.

• Lots of air passes through window areas, and airborne dust and allergens accumulate on all types of window treatments - which are rarely cleaned. In the family room and throughout the home, replace big, heavy linen drapes with more sensible window treat-ments such as wood blinds or flat screens that are easy to wipe and keep clean.

Now is a great time to adopt new allergy and asthma friendly clean-ing habits and products. You can learn more at www.AAFA.org/certified.

maintaining strength

Did you know you have more than 600 muscles in your body, including your tongue, heart and stomach? When exerted, your muscles pull against your skeleton, causing your bones to be-

come strong and durable. But a lack of exercise and nutrition can com-promise your muscle strength, especially as you age. “The average person can lose 8 percent of muscle tissue every 10 years after the age of 40,” says Dr. Vonda Wright, orthopedic surgeon, medical researcher and author of “Fitness After 40.” “When it comes to muscle, if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.” In addition to age, a sedentary lifestyle and poor nutrition can lead to loss of muscle. Many people are surprised to learn that a sedentary person may have 40 to 50 percent body fat. On the flip side, muscle burns more calories than fat during daily activities, including sitting. A serious, temporary illness or injury or a diet lacking proper nu-trition, especially protein, can also cause a loss in muscle mass. So muscle loss is not just a concern of the middle-aged or inactive, but for anyone who wants to stay healthy and active. To find out if your muscles are in good shape, try the push-up test. Men of any age should be able to do 11 and women should be able to complete eight. If you fall short of your goal, don’t despair. You still have time to build muscle strength with these tips: • Feed your muscle. Proteins are the building blocks of muscle. Get

your protein daily from meat, poultry, fish, nuts, eggs and beans.

You can also augment your diet with healthful protein and nutrition shakes, such as Ensure Muscle Health shakes, which contain Revigor (a source of HMB, an amino-acid metabolite), and 13 grams of pro-tein to help rebuild muscle and strength naturally lost over time. They are perfect for a snack on the go.

• Get aerobic exercise. Try to get between 30 to 60 minutes of blood-pumping exercise daily to build muscle endurance. And stretch your muscles before and after to prevent injury.

• Carry a load. Resistance training is also essential to keeping your muscles strong and limber and retaining bone density. Use weights or the resistance of your own body weight to build your strength.

“We live in an amazing time when we really are able to have some control over how we age,” says Dr. Wright. “In fact, there’s new evi-dence that boomers and seniors who exercise three to five times a week are able to retain lean muscle like younger athletes. So don’t let your age discourage you from living a healthier, active life today!”

For more information about maintaining healthy muscles and to read more of Dr. Wright’s tips, visit www.ensure.com. Then get started rebuild-ing your muscle strength. After all, this is the only body you have.

treatment

Millions of Americans suffer from venous disease and more than 25 million Americans suffer from severe varicose veins, which can cause pain, swelling, fatigue and disfigurement.

Now available is the new non-invasive treatment called VNUS. Dr. Richard Sadler at The Iowa Vein Clinic in Davenport now offers the VNUS® ClosureFAST catheter, which is an endovenous radiofre-quency (RF) ablation device designed to heat, shrink and close dis-eased saphenous veins (large leg veins) in about three minutes of relatively painless treatment. The recovery time for the patient is minimal with few after effects. This is not considered cosmetic surgery, as this procedure treats the medical condition known as venous reflux disease, and is done as an outpatient procedure. Therefore, the VNUS Closure procedure is covered by most national insurance programs. “Our patients are very pleased with the VNUS Closure® procedure,” said Dr. Sadler. “They are happy with how quickly the procedure is completed with little discomfort. They are amazed to be able to walk out after the procedure and continue with

normal activities the next day. The procedure is successful in clos-ing the vein, and quality of life improves immediately for the patient.” Done under local anesthesia, the ClosureFAST catheter is threaded into the diseased saphenous vein through a small punc-ture, and RF energy is transmitted through the device to heat and seal the vein walls. The body subsequently re-routes blood flow through healthier leg veins, restoring normal circulation, and the varicosity symptoms quickly dissipate. Clinical studies have found the procedure more than 97% effective at the one-year follow-up visit and virtually painless for most patients. As a medical necessity, the procedure is covered by Medicare and most private health insurance plans. “In the past, vein strip-ping was used to remove diseased veins and it’s a very traumatic surgery. The VNUS procedure is a great advancement in the field,” said Dr. Sadler. “It is amazing to be able to help a patient who has suffered with diseased veins for decades, and to do it with minimal pain and inconvenience.”

Sclerotherapy is a treatment that offers dramatic clearing of spider veins A specialized solution is injected into the spider veins, causing a “scarring down” of the vessel so it can no longer be seen. Venous disease is a very serious medical condition and half of all seniors, includ-ing two-thirds of women over 60, will experience the condition at some point. Primary risk factors that lead to venous disease are: pregnancy, heredity, obesity and careers requiring extended standing, like nursing, teaching, or factory work. Leg ulcers and blood clots are complications that can arise from venous disease. If you are suffering from venous dis-ease, you may be at serious risk. Call to schedule a consultation today.

Richard Sadler M.D. FACS is a private practice surgeon and leading vein doctor in Davenport, Iowa. He is currently Board Certi-fied in General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, and Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine. His work as a vein specialist began as an attending surgeon at the Hyperbaric and Wound center. The severe disability and chronicity of these vein diseases prompted Dr. Sadler to investigate those therapies that are more innovative than traditional medical care. Since coming to that revelation, Dr. Sadler started a separate clinic called The Iowa Vein Clinic. Utilizing VNUS closure, stripping, stab phlebectomy, and injection sclerotherapy, a comprehensive care plan can be provided for each pa-tient. With modern Ultrasound imaging, most procedures are performed under local anesthesia in the office.
