• The spring calving season should be in full swing now. Top priority should be to get a live calf and keep cows in sufficient body condition to rebreed early. Calving areas should be accessible and as clean and free of mud as possible.

• Check cows at least twice daily and first-calf heifers more frequently than that. Be ready to assist those not making progress after 1 to 2 hours of hard labor. Chilled calves should be dried and warmed as soon as possible.

• See that each calf gets colostrum within an hour of birth or administer colostrum (or a commercial colostrum replacement) with an esophageal feeder, if needed.

• Separate cows that have calved and increase their feed. Energy supplementation to cows receiving hay is necessary to prepare them for rebreeding. For example, a 1,250-lb.cow giving 25 lbs./day of milk would need about 25 lb. of fescue hay and 5 lb. of concentrate daily to

possible. You might choose to do this at the prebreeding working in late April or early May.

• Finalize plans for your spring breeding program. Purchase new bulls at least 30 days before the breeding season. Demand performance records and check health history including immunizations. Use visual evaluation and expected progeny differences to select a bull that fits your program. Order semen now, if using artificial insemination.

• Prepare bulls for this breeding season. Increase feed if necessary to have bulls in adequate condition for breeding.Fall-calving cows

• Bulls should be away from the cows now.

• Creep feed calves with grain, by-products or high quality forage. Calves will not make satisfactory gains on the dam’s milk alone after about four months of age.

Because there isn’t much pasture in March, fall calves need supplemental nutrition.

maintain condition. If you need to go from a condition score of 4 to 5, you will need to add about 2 more lb. of concentrate.

• Watch for calf scours. If scours become a problem, move cows which have not calved to a clean pasture. Be prepared to give fluids to scouring calves that become dehydrated. Consult your veterinarian for advice and send fecal samples to a diagnostic lab to determine which drug therapy will be most effective. Try to avoid feeding hay in excessively muddy areas to avoid contamination of the dams’ udders.

• Plan to vaccinate calves for clostridial diseases (Black-leg, Malignant Edema) as soon as

Consider creep grazing on wheat pasture, if available. Calves can also be early-weaned.

Calves intended for feeders should be implanted.

• Plan to pregnancy check cows soon.

• Consider adding weight and selling your fall calves as “heavy” feeder calves while prices are high. Keep them gaining – prices are too high to waste time.General

• If you have a dry, sunny day, use a chain-link harrow to spread manure in areas where cattle have overwintered. This may be done in conjunction with renovation.

• Renovation and fertilization of pastures should be completed.

• Repair fences, equipment and handling facilities.

• Start thistle control. They can be a severe problem in pastures. Chemical control must be done early to be effective.

• Watch for lice and treat if needed.

more pounds on the carcass and that will translate into more dol-lars. Efficiency of Limousin will be a profit advantage of several dollars for our producers. They do not have to feed as much expensive grain to achieve a respectable kill weight.

Mark Anderson, NALF Exec-utive Vice President, said in his “State of the Breed” presentation in Denver that we need to continue to improve our product to make it more acceptable to feeders and packers. He went on to say that Limousin can and will have a presence in the beef industry. We certainly have improved docility. Now we need to improve mar-bling without giving up any more muscle. If we can do that, then we will be able to meet the challenges of the new paradigm and again become a viable force in the beef industry.

Just remember an old history teacher like me tends to see the world in cycles. “What goes around – comes around”.

Buy your Limousin bulls with confidence that your end product will be in demand!

that was a tremendous price for good calves. On top of that, they were Limousin-sired calves.

High corn prices have had an unintended impact on the beef industry. I have had reports from commercial as well as seedstock producers that pasture ground which they have leased, in some cases for many years, have been leased to grain farmers who are tearing the ground up to raise corn. Shrinking grassland, drought, and now new government regulations are all converging on our national cow numbers, lowering them to a number that has not been seen since World War II days. Many of our ranchers and farmers are approaching the age where they no longer are as interested in raising livestock. Great salvage prices are providing a hamburger market for a struggling economy that cannot afford the high-end cuts of beef to feed the population. Can there be any more forces that will impact the beef industry?

The shinning ray of light for those of us left in the industry is that beef prices should remain high for several years. There is profit to be made in beef. We are hanging

will determine his profit/loss. The stakes are high (no pun intended). At the beginning of 2013, Midwest markets were recording record prices. In a smaller Iowa sale barn, $2.15 was paid for a large set of 600 lb. weight calves. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out

In the modern vernacular, we are experiencing a new paradigm. That is: “the beef industry is changing”. Forces which have been minor factors in an age when beef was plentiful now rule the market with major impact.

One would not think that feed-lots would invest money in a losing proposition with corn being at record high or near record high levels. Yet the feeder market for January was very high, which is

Recipe of the MonthThis simple meat ball recipe is a favorite at our house. Bev Summerbell

Baked Meat Balls1 egg 1 ½ slices bread, cubed¼ cup milk 1 tsp. salt1 ½ tsp. instant minced onion 1/8 tsp. pepper1 lb. ground beefHeat oven to 350 degrees. Beat egg and milk. Stir in onion, bread,

and seasonings. Add beef and mix well. Shape into balls, using 1/3 cup mixture for each ball. Place in shallow pan.

Topping: Mix ketchup, small amount of mustard and brown sugar together (I guess on the amount – I use more ketchup than the other two ingredients). Spoon over meat balls before baking. Bake 40-45 minutes. Makes about 7 meat balls.

for the meal liked them so much that the manager gave them a box of muffins to take with them.

Eating can be an interesting experience. I am glad that we had the opportunity to try the various items.

Member NewsCongratulations to Bob Hough,

former NALF Executive Vice President, who received the Dis-tinguished Alumni award given by Penn State University for his work in Animal Science.

Our thoughts are with Wayne Bollum of Northfield, MN as he continues with treatments for cancer.

We are also thinking about Gene Raymond of Garnett, KS who had hip replacement surgery at the end of February.

Lowell Hermon of Carlisle, IA had rotator cuff surgery the week after the Iowa Beef Expo in Feb-ruary. We wish them all a speedy recovery.

Our next stop on the trip was to visit the beaches of Normandy, France. We stayed in a very old hotel in Crepon. The meal at La ferme de la Ranconniere was elegant and probably one of the best I have ever had (expensive but great food). My three course meal began with “hot cheese terrine with apples, smoked ham and green salad. The meal ended with a “sweet temptation” from the dessert menu – a delicious French pastry with ice cream.

Dean was more daring for the main course, ordering a duck fillet and melted beetroot with hot wine sauce. I stayed on the safe side with a stuffed poultry breast with walnut and hazelnut. Our meal also included Norman apple sorbet with Calvados (an apple brandy).

On our return to the states, we spent a week in Tuscon, AZ. The resort recommended a Mexican restaurant, the only one in the city that served “mole”. I had never heard of it. They told me it was a sauce made with chocolate and chili. Usually I ask for a sample before ordering, but this time I de-cided to be brave and order Enchi-ladas with “Mole”. I don’t know if you have ever eaten this, but I couldn’t believe my eyes when my plate arrived with black sauce. It had a very bitter, sharp taste and unfortunately, not something that I enjoyed (actually had to order something else). I learned my lesson – sample before ordering.

When we were in Las Vegas, we ate at the Harley Davidson restau-rant on the Strip. We had the most delicious corn chowder. I would love to get their recipe. In Denver we ate at Jim and Nick’s barbecue located in the Northgate shopping mall. They served mini corn muffins that we wonderful. Our friends from the ILC who joined us

As I unpacked our luggage following our long trip that started in England & France and ended in Denver for the NWSS, I had fun looking over the memorabilia that I brought home. The trip began at the end of November and conclud-ed in the middle of January,

One of the most interesting aspects of travel is the food. I found myself eating some things that I have never heard of before. It was fun trying them out – some were good and others, well, as our English friends would say – “It’s not to me taste.”

Our trip began in England,

where we attended the wedding of Rachel Stalker and Paul Burgin. The meal was interesting. It be-gan with Leek & Tatie Soup (I think it was an English version of potato soup). The main course was Cumberland Sausage with Lowca Mash and Roasted Root Vegetables & Burgandy Sauce. According to the bride’s father, the sausage was made by the Queen’s sausage-maker.

We stayed with the bride’s par-ents after the wedding, and they served lamb stew one evening and leg of lamb for another meal. Although it is something I have not had before, I found it to be quite tasty.

Brock Schwartz and Tricia Farney were married in Wilson, KS on September 15, 2012. Brock is a grandson of Gerald (Rick) and Carol Ricketts of Flying R Farms, Clay Center, KS. We are pleased to report that

Earline Schuppe of Iliff, CO, who had both hips replaced late this fall, has made a complete recovery. It was great seeing Earline and Gor-don at the NWSS in Denver.

Our sympathy is extended to the family of Brenda Vrchota of Lake City, SD. She passed away December 21, 2012. Jerry Vrcho-ta, Brenda’s husband is a Limousin and commercial producer.

This is an awesome set of curve bender genetics with eye appeal to go with it. These bulls carry some of the most powerful performance genetics in the Limousin breed. The average BW EPD on the offering is 0.6 combined with a average YW EPD of 110. Ten bulls in the offering have negative BW EPD's combined with triple digit YW EPD's. We invite you to compare them. These bulls are structurally correct, well muscled and masculine. They're fed to exhibit their performance but not to be over fat. The feet and legs are sound and we want them to stay that way. Every bull in the sale is polled with many being double polled and homo-zygous polled. These are performance bred bulls for the working cattleman. Sometimes they work in the show ring as well.

from Pompadour Hills Limousin of Highmore, SD. Since that time, Fott has purchased bulls for his 800 cow herd from Lonely Valley Lim-ousin, Ludens Family Limousin,

Richard Fott of Hamill, South Dakota was named the 2013 South Dakota “Commercial Producer of the Year” by the South Dakota Limousin Association. Fott and his mother, Juanita accepted the award from Dean Summerbell, Ex-ecutive Secretary of the Heartland Limousin Association at the South Dakota Limousin Association’s annual banquet in Rapid City, SD January 31, 2013.

Richard followed his grandfa-ther and father’s footsteps raising cattle on the southern South Dako-ta prairie near the Missouri river. They have been buying Limousin bulls since the 1970’s from South Dakota and Nebraska Limousin producers.

Their first bulls were purchased

by bidders on his calf production. Fott has a row crop operation

of 400 acres to compliment the extensive pasture and hay land. He usually harvests silage off an additional 350 acres.

Muscle is the prime reason for using Limousin genetics, accord-ing to Fott. His British based cow herd and replacement females have very little trouble calving and the Limi-crossed calves have vigor at birth. He believes in the Limousin muscle, efficiency, and growth advantages

Richard commended the South Dakota breeders on their improve-ment in Limousin genetics, espe-cially in docility. Limousin works for him and he thanked the SDLA for the award.

President Kyle Stern of Garden City opened the program following the annual banquet in Rapid City.
