Reflection Day Year 8 On Tuesday, 11th August, the Year 8 students actively participated in their Reflection Day in Osborne Park which was facilitated by the Youth Mission Team. The theme of the day was ‘What do We Stand For’ which enabled the students to discuss a range of values and Gospel values which they stand for, with their Care Group Teachers. The Year 8 students represented the College with pride and distinction as members of the public commented how well behaved the students were throughout the day. The Youth Mission Team provided insightful and thought-provoking presentations to the students which challenged them to reflect upon the Gospel values that are important to them. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff for their organisation and input to facilitate the Reflection Day, especially Mr Paul Woodhouse, Acting Assistant Deputy Principal Year 8 and the Year 8 Care Group Teachers. Mr Andrew Donaldson Assistant Deputy Principal Year 12 & Campus Ministry

Reflection

20th Sunday/ Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A The theme of the readings this weekend is God's love is for everybody. What matters most to Jesus is your faith and your love. First reading: Isaiah 56:1, 6-7 Psalm: Psalm 66(67):2-3, 5-6, 8 Second reading: Romans 11:13-15, 29-32 Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28 At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour. In today’s Gospel Jesus saw the Canaanite women’s faith, he granted her request and healed her daughter. Her faith brought her to Jesus even when it seemed like she was being ignored and even turned away. She trusted, believed and hoped in Jesus. Through her persistent faith and hope, Jesus showed mercy and helped her. It is at times such as these that God calls us to trust, believe and hope in Jesus because He welcomes all who come to Him by faith. Our prayers to God should be as persistent, with the confidence that God will provide all that we need. Mrs Daphne Peters Campus Ministry

Feast of the Assumption The Assumption of Mary is a holy day of obligation in the Catholic Church which celebrates, through a feast, the Virgin, the mother of Jesus Christ when her spirit and body ascended into heaven. The Assumption of Mary is celebrated and observed on Saturday 15th August. The Feast of the Assumption is one of the oldest holy days in the Church, with accounts of celebrations going back to the sixth century. Christians in the East, Catholic and Orthodox, refer to it as the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, or "the falling asleep of the Mother of God." The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document entitled "The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God." The document is written in the voice of the Apostle John (follow the link) to whom Christ on the Cross had entrusted the care of His mother, and it recounts the death, laying in the tomb, and assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Tradition variously places Mary's death at Jerusalem or at Ephesus, where John was living. Mr Andrew Donaldson Assistant Deputy Principal Year 12 & Campus Ministry

Prison Outreach Book Collection The Year 7 McGarry Service project this Term, was to promote and collect books for the Prison Outreach scheme. They did a fabulous job and the collection was very successful. Len Nielson visited our College to collect the books that staff, students and parents very kindly donated. Len is the Prison Outreach Project Coordinator; His work is predominantly to address the higher educational needs for the disadvantaged. He was thrilled to receive so many children’s books which will go to Boronia Women’s Prison where they are allowed to have their children. Western Australia still allows Children as young as 10 years old to be imprisoned so the books will be invaluable helping these children further their education. Len spoke to our Year 7 McGarry representatives whilst he was here and they had many questions to ask him about life in prison. I felt that the books are going to a good cause. I found out how much it may affect somebody's life with just being able to have a book to read as they don't get the privilege to ride their bike down to the beach or spend time with their family. Olivia Hoxey 7MB All over Western Australia people are in prison for stealing things they may need, like if they are homeless and they cannot afford food so they have to steal to get it. There are even prisons for kids, some of those kids learn more there than they do out of prison. With all the books that we are giving to these prisoners it can stop them being bored and increase their education by reading books that we do not need anymore. Isaac Coorey 7MA

These books that the McGarry students collected are all for the prisons around Australia, because everyone has a right to knowledge. Maria Murray 7MA

This is the final product of our Term 2 project. We were tasked with designing a summer garment that we would like to wear. Ashley chose to make a more formal dress by designing a black fitted dress with a patterned overlay that is suitable for summer events. Rose designed a kaftan to wear over her bathers at the beach, Anon decided to make a colourful skirt that would go well with a simple black tee and Niamh designed a summer dress that could be used for birthday parties as well as casual events. Overall, this project has assisted in strengthening our sewing skills and has allowed us to become more confident in our abilities for further projects and pattern creation. Delicious Profiteroles

Profiteroles are very delicious, and enjoyable to make. They were difficult to make and get the exact mixture and texture of the dough, but after our second attempt we were successful. Combined with custard and chocolate they were scrumptious! Annedrea Donio 11GA

Young Leaders Forum The prefects and I had the privilege of attending the Pearce Young Leaders Forum hosted by the Hon Christian Porter, Federal Member for Pearce, and a guest speaker, cricketing legend, Justin Langer. We sat amongst 13 other schools from across the Pearce electorate and received a lot of guidance from Mr Porter and Mr Langer. We learned what it means to be a great leader in our own way and how to lead in times of adversity and uncertainty as well as to empower and coach the future leaders. Christian Porter and Justin Langer had great answers to many of our questions. What we took from that day, were five important points that Justin Langer stands by.

1. Know what you stand for. 2. Write down your goal (on paper, the wall, wherever — make it permanent). 3. Surround yourself with great people! 4. Be careful of the media (do not let strangers tell you how much you are worth or not). 5. Do what is good for you, not what is good to do.

Winter Appeal 2020 It is not too late to bring in items for the Winter Appeal. Winter, in any year, presents numerous challenges to many families who are struggling to make ends meet. This year, many families are doing it tougher than ever before as a result of the challenges that 2020 has thrown at us. Keeping a family warm and fed during these colder months can be difficult when there are other demands on the family finances. This is often when families are forced to turn to supportive Catholic agencies like ‘The ShopFront’, who will provide them with much needed assistance. Each House Group in each Year level has been allocated a particular ‘food and toiletry product’ to kindly donate. The posters included in this week’s McCormack Messenger are details of your child’s specified donation items. The collections will take place this term. During this time, the students are asked to take their donations to Care Group, where there will be a collection basket and the donations will then be taken to a central collection point each day. Thank you in advance for supporting this important College initiative as we continue to show our generosity to our wider Perth Community. Miss Cherie Milne Campus Ministry

Swim Scholarship Training Swim Scholarship training is now in full swing. Over the past 8 weeks the scholarship holders have been working hard on fitness and technique in the pool. This committed group of 15 students from Year 7-11 have quickly learned the discipline needed to be involved in a swim squad. They have also engaged in leadership activities and goal setting during extended care, helping them to learn that the sport of swimming is just as much a mental challenge as a physical one. I would like to congratulate the swimmers on their excellent start to training and their dedication in the face of some bitterly cold mornings. Mr Jeremy Carbone Physical Education Teacher

2020 Five-a-side Soccer Competition All ten teams have now played their first group game, with Year 7 team ‘The GOAT’s’ having already qualified for the semi-finals to be held later in the term. The Senior Boys’ group witnessed a match of high intensity as Year 11 outfit ‘Uncle Tony’ narrowly edged out their Year 10 opponents ‘Free Bobby United’ while Staff team ‘The McCormack Choppers’ came from behind to salvage a draw in their opening fixture. A hat-trick from Zac McNeair takes his tally to eight for the campaign - a prolific goal scorer! Results:
