PERSONAL SAFETY DO’s:• Be sure your spa is connected to the power supply correctly – only use

a licensed electrical contractor.• Shut off power supply (unplug 120V models) before draining the spa

or servicing the electrical components.• Test the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) monthly.• Always test the water temperature with an accurate thermometer

before entering the spa to be sure that it’s a safe temperature.• Remember that wet surfaces can be very slippery. Take care when

entering and exiting the spa.• Lock the DuraCover when the spa is not in use, whether it is empty or

full of water.• Keep the water clean and sanitized with correct chemical care.• Turn on the jets when adding ANY chemicals to the spa water.• Clean the filter cartridge(s) monthly to remove debris and mineral

buildup which affects the performance of the hydrotherapy jets, limits the flow, or trips the high limit thermostat which will turn off theentire spa.

LOCATIONFor your portable spa to function properly and safely,it must be located on a hard, flat, level surface.Inground spas require special installation techniquesand should be planned in conjunction with your spadealer. Improper installation can result in structuraldamage to the spa and the voiding of your spawarranty. Items to discuss with your dealer include:Local construction codes, electrical service require-ments, serviceability of equipment, present under-ground obstructions such as gas, water, and tele-phone lines, safety measures such as fences andlocks, and visibility of the spa installation from thehome, street, and neighbors.

• Allow for sufficient water drainage around the spato help preserve the equipment and supportstructure. This includes indoor installations.

• A filled spa can weigh up to 4,000 pounds and thelocation should support the weight of the filled spa.

• Locate the equipment compartment where it willbe accessible. Your spa MUST be installed topermit access for servicing the equipment aboveand/or below any decks or floors. Access isessential and must allow adequate room for service.

• Leave access to the circuit breakers in the subpanel (240V models) or to the interrupter switch(GFCI, 120V models) on the end of the power cord.

• Be sure the spa is level and in the final positionBEFORE filling with water. Check for power cords, tools, and hoses that may be caught underneaththe spa.

• IMPORTANT: DO NOT LET AN EMPTY SPAREMAIN EXPOSED TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT.Spa surface temperatures can reach in excess of150°F (65°C) if left exposed to the sun. Significantdamage can occur if this is allowed to happen, including warping and blistering of the surface.Damage, that occurs as a result of this exposure,is not covered under the warranty.

• CAUTION: Never try to move a spa that has notbeen fully drained. To do so could result in dam-age to the spa and physical injury to the mover.

OUTDOOR AND PATIO INSTALLATIONTo install the spa outdoors, we recommend areinforced concrete pad at least four inches thick. The reinforcing material should be attached to a #8AWG bonding wire per national and localelectrical code.

If you place the spa on the ground, even tempo-rarily, place concrete pavers under the entire bottomof the spa. The concrete pavers should be a leasttwo inches thick and level across the entire surface. The spa will inevitably settle and not remain level onthis surface, thus it’s important to get it onto a solidfoundation as soon as possible.

DECK INSTALLATIONBe sure the deck can support the weight of yourfilled spa by checking the deck’s maximum loadcapacity. Consult a qualified building contractor orstructural engineer. Minimum requirement is 100pounds per square foot.

INDOOR INSTALLATIONThere are special requirements if you place your spaindoors. Flooring material must provide adequatetraction when wet. Proper drainage is essential toprevent water puddling. Humidity will increase andit’s best to provide proper ventilation to the area andthe addition of a ventilation system may be necessary.

SHUT-OFF VALVESYour spa is equipped with shut-off valves (seeEQUIPMENT DIAGRAM) that shut off the water flowto the equipment system for dealer service. Attimes, a new spa or one that has recently beenserviced, may have the shut-off valves partiallyclosed which can restrict the water flow and hinderjet performance. Be sure the valves are fully open.

FREEZE PROTECTIONWhen a freeze condition is detected (which occurswhen the temperature in the heater housing dropsto 55°F, (13°C) for 240V models; to 40°F (4°C) for120V models) the jet pump(s) is automaticallyactivated. In areas with extremely cold winterconditions, your spa should be fine as long as it isleft running at normal operating temperatures. Forextra protection see your dealer for an optionalfreeze sensor. If you plan to turn the spa off, followthe instructions in this manual (see SUSPENDEDUSE OR WINTERIZING YOUR SPA).

OVERHEATINGIn the case of extended hot weather, the spa watertemperature may reach and maintain 104°F to 106°F(40°C to 41°C) or higher. This is due to the ambienttemperature and the full insulation in the spa cabi-net. You may have the option of shortening thepump-run time. See SPA CONTROL OPERATION foravailable options.

FILTER CARTRIDGE(S)Your portable spa is equipped with the ConstantClean Filtration system. Depending on your spamodel, it features one or two Vortex filters.

NOTE: It is very important that the components ofthese filtration systems be installed properly in theproper part of the spa.

1. Hold the Vortex filter cartridge and center it inthe opening of the filter housing.

2. Use the filter handle and turn the filter cartridgeclockwise to screw it in place. (Use caution notto overtighten as damage may occur tothreads and is not covered under warranty.)

Factory Default Settings:• Filter Cycle Duration: F2 (2 hours)• Filter Cycles: 2C (twice per day)• Smart Logic: 1H (1 hour)

These settings represent the most commonly usedsettings, but your use may be different, dependingupon many variables – frequency, number of bathers, duration, water capacity, etc. These variables affectthe quality of water and the way it should be man-aged to achieve the most effective cleansing. Se-lectable choices for the settings of the operationsystems allows flexibility and ensures your Marquisspa remains easy to maintain for your particular set ofcircumstances.

SOLID-STATE OZONATORThe ozonator greatly reduces the amount of chemi-cal sanitizer you need in the water to keep yourwater clean. The ozonator functions whenever thepump is running on low speed. You should occasion-ally inspect your ozonator to ensure it continues tolight (see MAINTENANCE, Every Three to FourMonths). A good time to do this is every threemonths, when you drain and fill your spa.

CONSTANT CLEAN FILTRATIONYour spa is preset at the factory with a default settingto filter itself using the jet pump on low-speed for twohours twice in a 24-hour period. These settingsrepresent the filter settings necessary for averageuse. The timing of the first filter cycle is determinedby when the spa was initially energized. The firstcycle begins six minutes after this initial power-up.The second filter cycle begins 12 hours after thefirst cycle.

HEAT LIGHTThe HEAT ON light illuminates when the heater is on.The pump circulates on low-speed whenever thethermostat calls for heat.

HEAT MODEYour spa comes preset in the standard heat mode. For most applications, the standard mode should beused. If you are in a warm weather climate and thespa does not require as much heat, the economymode may work best. For a vacation home or forvery infrequent use, the sleep mode provides filtra-tion and circulation with lower energy demand. Ineconomy mode your spa heats only during the filtercycle. In sleep mode your spa will maintain a watertemperature that is 20°F (7°C) below the set tem-perature. This ensures your spa will be ready to usemore quickly (allow about one hour per one degree Ffor heating your spa’s water) when increasing thetemperature to the desired level.

The spa’s heat mode can be adjusted to one ofthree different settings:

Standard ModeThe spa water heats to the temperature as set at thebather’s panel. In this mode the filtration pump turnson for two minutes every half-hour to “poll” or checkthe water. If heat is needed the unit heats to the settemperature. The LCD window steadily displays theactual temperature in this mode.

Economy ModeIn this mode the spa only heats to the set tempera-ture during a filter cycle. The LCD window displays“Ecn” alternately flashing with the actual temperaturewhen the spa is up to temperature and “Ecn” steadilywhen the spa’s water temperature is below the settemperature.

Sleep ModeYour spa will maintain a water temperature that is 20°F(7°C) below the set temperature. Heater functionsonly during a filter cycle. The LCD window displays“SLP” flashing alternately with the actual temperaturewhen the spa is up to set temperature and displays“SLP” steadily when below set temperature.

IMPORTANT CHEMICAL SAFETY PROCEDURES

1 Always keep chemicals out of reach of children.

2. Read product labels carefully prior to use.

3. When dissolving, always add chemicals to water,do not add water to chemicals. Some dry chemi-cals should be dissolved prior to adding them tothe spa. Using a clean container, dip some waterfrom the spa. Mix until dissolved, then add tocirculating water.

4. CAUTION: Do not add chemicals together. Addthem separately to the spa water.

5. All chemical products should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area where the averagetemperature does not exceed 90°F (32°C). Keepstorage area clean of debris such as rags, news-paper, and combustible materials.

6. Keep chemicals away from open flame or otherheat source. Do not smoke near chemicals. If adry chlorine chemical fire should occur, use wateronly. Do not use a dry chemical fire extinguisher toattempt to put out the fire.

7. When adding chemicals, always keep the watercirculating in the spa with jets in a downwardcircular pattern for better chemical distribution.Add chemicals to the spa water one at a time.Allow several minutes between any new chemicaladditions using the jet action to evenly distributethroughout the spa.

8. Wait approximately 15 minutes after addingchemicals to retest your water for an accuratereading. Retest your spa water before using.

9. If you have any questions or concerns about thecorrect procedures for handling chemicals, pleasecontact your spa dealer or Marquis Spas.

UNDERSTANDING WATER BALANCE

Water balance is the interrelation of factors thatdetermine the quality of the spa water. The effective-ness of chemicals and other additives are dependenton all these factors working together or “in balance”.The primary elements to water balance are sanitizing, monitoring pH and alkalinity levels, and oxidizing orshocking.

Before we begin, it’s important to understand that aspa is not just a “small swimming pool” and that thecare of a spa needs to be handled differently. Inaddition to the fact that a spa is kept at a tempera-ture of up to 104°F (40°C) and pool chemicals aredesigned for cool water, the ratio of people per gallonin a spa is also very different. Four people in a spa isthe equivalent of having 200 people in a typicalbackyard pool. This increased “bather load” in-creases the residue from soaps, perfumes, body oils, cosmetics, and other contaminants. Always usewater treatment products designed for spa use.

Sanitizing MethodsAll Marquis spas are equipped with the exclusiveMarquis Ozone System. The use of an ozonatorgreatly reduces the amount of chemical sanitizer youneed in the water. Ozone works by delivering acti-vated oxygen gas into the spa water via an ozoneinjector fitting. The ozone gas combines with con-taminants to sanitize the water. Although sometimespromoted as a stand-alone chemical free alternative,we recommend that you maintain a small residual ofchlorine or bromine in the water while using anyozone system. Supplementing the water with sani-tizer controls and prevents bacteria growth. Insteadof the normal 3 - 5 ppm of sanitizer recommended, you only need to maintain a 0.5 ppm level of chlorineor bromine when using an ozonator.

The Nature2 Spa Mineral PurifierFor silky smooth water and greater sanitizer effec-tiveness, Marquis recommends that you partner theOzone System with a Nature2 Spa Mineral Purifier. The Nature2 cartridge fits neatly inside the core of thespa filter and slowly releases metallic ions. Nature2

also works in conjunction with a minimal sanitizer

All Marquis Spasare equipped withour exclusiveOzone System.

Nature2 SpaMineral Purifier

level (0.5 ppm). Bromine sanitizer is not recom-mended for use with Nature2. Important! TheNature2 cartridge should be replaced everyfour months.

Only the use of ozone, Nature2, and chlorine orbromine are recommended. Use of other alternativesanitizer systems may void the warranty. The chlorineused in the Marquis spa should always be theMarquis Spa Care brand or a base of SodiumDichloro (DiClor). Important: Cal Hypo andTriChlor compounds are not recommended foruse with a Marquis spa.

AlkalinityAlkalinity acts as a buffer to prevent the pH level fromchanging as other substances are added to the water.Proper alkalinity is directly related to the stability of thepH. The alkalinity should be between 80 - 120 ppm.Alkalinity levels below 80 ppm make it very difficult tostabilize the pH level. Levels above 120 ppm mayincrease pH levels and cause cloudy water, scaling, and decreased efficiency of the sanitizer.

pH LevelThe pH level measures the relative acidity and basicityof the water. The ideal pH level is 7.2 - 7.8. When thepH level falls below 7.2 the water can become corro-sive. Low pH can cause damage to metal in theequipment pack and heaters, excessive sanitizerconsumption, and skin irritation. A pH level above 7.8can be scale-forming and allows metals or minerals inthe water to form deposits and stain spa surfaces.

ShockingOnce bacteria and other wastes are neutralized bythe sanitizer, they stay in the water unless oxidized orshocked. Often called chloramines or bromamines, they create dull, cloudy water and can cause odorand eye or skin irritation. Marquis Shock Treatmentrids your spa of these wastes for clear, sparklingwater. Shocking is recommended once a week orwhenever the water appears dull or cloudy or has astrong chlorine odor.

NOTE: A strong chlorine odor indicates that thespa needs to be shocked – not that there is toomuch chlorine in the water. A properly bal-anced spa that is shocked regularly will nothave a chlorine odor.

Balancing the Water

When initially filling or refilling your spa follow thesesteps to achieve proper water balance.

Important! Always circulate the water forat least 15 minutes after making anychemical additions, before retesting water,or adding any additional products.

1. Test the spa water using an AquaChek Test Strip(see label for easy dip and read directions).

2. Determine the pH and alkalinity level of the waterusing the color comparison chart on the bottle.

3. If changes need to be made to the pH and/oralkalinity level to put them within the recom-mended range, always balance the alkalinitybefore balancing the pH.

The product(s) you should use to adjust pH and/oralkalinity are Marquis pH & Alkalinity Increase or pH& Alkalinity Decrease. Make any chemical addi-tions per the directions on the bottle and then testand repeat if necessary until all readings are in thedesired range.

4. After pH and alkalinity levels are in the recom-mended range, you can establish a sanitizerresidual of 0.5 ppm. Add one-half ounce ofMarquis Chlorine per 500 gallons of water. Testand repeat if necessary until there is a 0.5 ppmresidual of sanitizer in the water.

5. Upon initial start-up and every four months there-after, insert a new Nature2 cartridge into theMarquis filter.

Water characteristics vary depending on the localwater supply. You may need to “fine tune” the spawater due to these variances. Your dealer maysuggest the use of the following products whenfilling the spa based on your water conditions:

Metal and Stain ControlIf minerals such as calcium, iron, copper, or manganeseexist in your water supply, they can stain spa surfaces.Marquis Spa Care Metal & Stain Control prevents spastaining. Add per label directions for the gallons of yourspa each time you freshly fill the spa with water.

marquis care and enjoyment guide

PAGE 57

MARQUIS SPAS

AquaChek Test Stripstest the spa water forsanitizer, pH andalkalinity levels.

Page 58: Marquis Spa

Calcium Hardness IncreaseIt is critical to have some calcium in your water, however, the level of calcium should be between200 – 400 ppm. High calcium levels can cause scalebuildup on spa surfaces and equipment. Your spa isprotected against high calcium by using MarquisMetal & Stain Control when initially filling your spa.Low calcium levels can cause spa water to becomehighly corrosive and damaging to the spa equipmentand plumbing. To raise calcium levels, use MarquisSpa Care Calcium Hardness Increase.

pH LockIf your water supply requires constant adjustments tokeep your pH in balance, we suggest the use ofMarquis Spa Care pH Lock. pH Lock “locks-in” thepH level when added to a freshly filled spa. pH Lockmaintains the ideal pH level for approximately threeto four months – until it is time to drain your spa.

Your Marquis dealer can provide all the necessities for approximatelyfour months of water care in one convenient package.

WATER CARE REGIMEN

Marquis Spa Care products are classified by easy tofollow usage guidelines. Labels indicate whether theproduct should be used daily, weekly, monthly, whenfilling, or as needed – if special water conditions arise.(Products classified as “Filling” are described on theprevious page.)

DAILYSanitizer is the only product in this category. Youshould maintain the recommended sanitizer level atall times. This does not mean you may have to addsanitizer daily, just that you need to test the sanitizerlevel regularly and especially before and after eachspa use. Choose and maintain one of the followingsanitizer options:

ChlorineMarquis Spa Care Chlorine is the recommendedsanitizer. The granular formula dissolves rapidly andcreates an immediate sanitizer level when addedto the spa. Marquis Spa Care Chlorine can be usedin conjunction with the Marquis Ozone System andthe Nature2 Mineral Purifier.

Bromine TabletsFor a different sanitizing option, bromine tablets areslowly dispensed into the spa via an adjustable, floating bromine dispenser. When using bromine inconjunction with the Marquis Ozone System, youshould maintain a level of 0.5 ppm. As a stand-alone sanitizer without the aid of ozone, you shouldmaintain a level of 3 - 5 ppm. Bromine is notrecommended for use with Nature2.

WEEKLYThe following products should be added once a week:

Shock TreatmentSanitizer combines with bacteria and neutralizes iton contact. However, the used sanitizer/bacteriaparticle is still present in the spa water. Usedsanitizer in the water emits a chlorine odor andcauses cloudy water. To oxidize, or rid the spa ofthis used sanitizer, you must shock the spa oncea week.

AS NEEDED PRODUCTSpH & Alkalinity Increase andpH & Alkalinity DecreaseThese two products work to raise or lower the pHand alkalinity levels in the spa and are only neededif the test strip indicates the levels are not in theideal range.

Crystal Clear ClarifierMicroscopic particles can pass right through thespa filter and create cloudy water. The use ofMarquis Spa Care Crystal Clear Clarifier combinesthese microscopic particles into larger particles thatcan be trapped in the filter to clear cloudy water.

Foam EliminatorIf foam appears in your spa, the action of the jetswill keep it from dissipating. The use of Marquis SpaCare Foam Eliminator instantly rids your spa waterof foam.

MONTHLY MAINTENANCE

1. Filter CareWe cannot stress enough the importance of aclean filter for proper water filtration. Dirty filterscan restrict water flow, cause hazy water, andprevent your chemicals from working properly. Many water treatment products clear or clarify thewater by clumping microscopic particles andminerals together so that these larger particlescan be effectively trapped in the filter. A filterclogged with debris and calcium deposits doesnot trap particles properly.

The Maintenance Reminder on the spa-sideControl Panel indicates a CL every 30 days toremind you to clean your filter.

Removing the FilterGrasp the edge of the dome-shaped Vortex filtertop, pull up firmly, but gently, to remove it.

Turn the filter cartridge counterclockwise to un-screw it from its base. Lift out the filter cartridge.

Use a hose to clean the filter cartridge or use theMarquis Maintenance Kit bucket and Filter Reviveto soak the filters (you will need to flip the filter afterthe designated time to completely clean the entirelength). Or a Filter Soak Canister is available fromyour dealer to assist in the filter cleaning process.

NOTE: Keep an extra set of filters on hand so youalways have a clean set ready for immediate spaenjoyment. Remember to replace the filtercartridge(s) at least once a year.

Reinstalling the FilterRepeat the steps above in reverse. Do not over-tighten the filter as it may cause the threads onthe bottom to strip and fail to hold the filter inplace. When replacing the Vortex filter top, centerthe top over the raised filter ring and press downfirmly until the top snaps into place. (See INSTAL-LATION INSTRUCTIONS, Filter Cartridges.)

EVERY THREE TO FOUR MONTHS

Draining and Filling the SpaThe average spa needs to be drained every three tofour months. After months of continually addingchemicals to the water and introducing body oils andlotions, the water can be difficult to manage andchemicals are not as effective as usual. You may alsonotice excessive foaming. A maintenance reminderappears on the control panel as “CH” to remind youto change water. More frequent draining may berequired depending on use. If you are using a Na-ture2 Spa Mineral Purifier, it should be replaced everyfour months. Use that as a benchmark to drain andrefill the spa at least that often.

NOTE: If you need to drain prior to four months, remove the Nature2, rinse thoroughly, and replaceafter you have filled the spa. The Nature2 continuesto work for the remainder of the four month period.

1. Leakage DetectionOpen the equipment door and check for signs ofwater leakage around the pump(s). Pump sealswear out over time, especially with improper waterchemistry. Early detection of pump seal failure cansignificantly reduce repair costs.

2. Ozonator OperationCheck to see if the bulb is lighted. Run spa in low-speed. The end caps of the ozonator should havea green glow if functioning properly. If not, the bulbhas burned out. Contact your dealer for service.

3. Draining the Spa Using the External Drainand Fill ConnectionA. Turn off the power to the spa.B. Remove the hose bib plug from the external

drain and fill connection and attach a hose.C. Open the drain valve in the equipment

compartment. (See EQUIPMENT DIAGRAM.)Gravity causes the water to drain out ofthe hose.

D. When the spa is empty, close the drain valveand remove the hose. Reinstall the hosebib plug.

4. Clean the DuraShell® InteriorOnce the spa is drained, clean the DuraShell interiorthoroughly – especially at the water line. We sug-gest the DuraMitt to clean without scratching.NOTE: Do not leave an empty spa uncovered.Direct sunlight on the spa surface can causesevere damage or blemishing and can result in thevoiding of any surface warranties.

5. Refill the SpaFill the spa with fresh water from a garden hoseand balance the water as described in the WaterTreatment section.

The use of a A Fill Filter™ is recommended whenfilling especially in areas of high mineral content in thewater. Attach to the end of a garden hose to filter outany grit and sediment that could accumulate in thespa and potentially scratch the spa surface.
