It would have been impossible to know, when he joined the Masons in 1964 that he’d have such a positive impact on our fraternity. Nevertheless, he clearly has had more impact on Freemasonry in general, and the Valley of Toledo in particular than almost anyone else. For 41 years, Brother Parton has been the Stage Manager for the Valley of Toledo. The Valley has gone through a great deal of transition throughout those years, from multiple-weekend venues to one-day classes; from stage performances to theater-in-the- round, and even conducting degrees in numerous multiple and varied locations. Nevertheless, Brother Jon Parton was always there to make every event a success. The honor of Meritorious Service Award was conferred on him several years ago to thank him for his many years of dedicated service, but even that great honor seems hardly enough. Now, he has announced his retirement as Stage Manager for the Valley of Toledo. How can we thank a legend for being such a steady force for all these years? The measure of our gratitude can hardly compete with all he’s given us. Please, please be sure to thank Jon the next time you see him. He’s not looking for applause, and he’ll be the first to say he’s just been doing his job. We all know however, that the rest of us couldn’t have done ours, without his steady and determined devotion to the Craft. Now, here comes the hard part. We need to replace the legend! Clearly Jon will never be replaced, and his efforts have left an indelible positive impact on us all. His shoes will be very big ones to fill. Nevertheless, after all these years he has earned his retirement, and it’s time for us to find someone else. Fortunately, Jon has agreed to work with his replacement, and to help our new Stage Manager in any way possible to make the transition a smooth one. As a result, we anticipate that our new icon, with the assistance and input of our retiring one, will insure the success of the Valley of Toledo for many years to come as well. If you have interest in this position, or know of someone who would be a great person to consider for this important position please call the Valley office. Interviews will be scheduled, and we hope to have the role filled in the near future. Jon was Stage Manager when most of today’s members of the Valley joined. In that sense, it is the end of an era. With his help however, we anticipate the beginning of a new era, and the birth of a new legend. Please help us to determine who that new legend will be.

End Of An Era

There’s no doubt about it - Jon Parton is a legend.

The Valley has gone through a great deal of transition throughout those years, from multiple-weekend venues to one-day classes; from stage performances to theater-in-the-round, and even conducting degrees in numerous multiple and varied locations. Nevertheless, Brother Jon Parton was always there to make every event a success.

The honor of Meritorious Service Award was conferred on him several years ago to thank him for his many years of dedicated service, but even that great honor

seems hardly enough.

Executive Secretary ReportWell it is the new year of 2012. I am excited about all the activities and events that are up and coming for this year. I have tried to add new events to see if we can entice some of the new members or current members who have not been active. I did eliminate some of the old events such as the Family Summer Picnic. Maybe it has run its course. But the old traditional events will always be part of our planning such as the reunions and Maundy services. I thought that I would summarize last year’s activities and give you my thoughts as to where I still want to go.

Since I have been here we started off with a Summer Picnic in Waterville last July. We were blown away! Literally! A strong wind sheer came in and blew all the tents down to a mangled mess and the tent people did a great job of having it cleaned up and replaced by the same evening. The picnic was a light turnout though and thus we have decided to try something else this year.

My Testimonial Dinner for my 33rd coronation had over 70 people in attendance at the new Shrine facility in Rossford. It was a good time and great food. Our Deputy of Ohio, Ill. Brother William Powers, joined us for the evening. I want to thank Ill. Brothers McElfresh and Ellison for their joint effort to make it a memorable evening.

Speaking of the Shrine, they joined with us last October to hold a very successful joint fall reunion at the Stranahan Theater. We added 22 new members to our membership that day. It went well and scheduled on time. I do want to thank all of those who helped make this a success.

The Lights Before Christmas at the Toledo Zoo was again a success. There were over 160 members and families there to enjoy a pizza party and walk around the zoo and marvel over the brilliant colors that they display each year.

So what is happening at your Valley? I have made a few changes so far. We have a new membership chairman named Jeff Young who is like an energizer bunny. I truly believe that he will bring great things to the table. I have also had Brother Ryan Kelly and Brother Jeff Young present a new website for the Valley. It is remarkable and as soon as I get proficient with it, we will have one of the best around. The Board and membership has approved the purchase of a new building. We all know that we need to find a nice place that needs to be cheaper and this just may be the place. I am waiting to hear back from Supreme Council with an approval to proceed.

Now there are still items on my plate that I need to address. Most of them are minor but there are still issues with finances. I am working on those issues along with the Board of Trustees to make this organization stable. I can tell you that there is no talk about raising dues. The Board will get this worked out. So, what are YOU doing on Saturday, February 18th? Hopefully you’ve reserved the date to spend as a fun-filled day with your brethren. Where else would you get the opportunity to travel to a foreign land (Dayton), sample the local delicacies (box lunch), experience stage shows (Scottish Rite degrees) and meet dignitaries from across the jurisdiction (Ohio Masons) – all for the meager cost of $10.00?

Yes, that’s right! Your $10.00 will not only provide you with all of the above (this is an all-inclusive venue), but you’ll be able to share the fellowship and friendship with your fellow Brothers as well. Transportation has been lined up to take everyone to Dayton, and the vans will leave the Valley of Toledo office promptly at 7:00am. From that point on, you won’t have to worry about another thing – until you return to Maumee around 6:00pm. The entire day has been planned in anticipation of accommodating the Brethren of the Valley of Toledo.

Our Valley will portray the 26th degree, and other Valleys will portray degrees as well. Dayton will portray the 4th, 9th and 16th degrees, Cincinnati will portray the 19th, and Columbus will portray the 25th. What better way to experience the State-Wide fellowship and talent, than to attend this event? I maintain that the other Valleys are coming to see how the 26th is supposed to be done, but others may disagree (although I’m convinced I’m right).

In any event, please make plans to attend. It’s an event nobody will soon forget. Please return the reservation form, on the inside of the back page, to the office no later than noon on Friday, February 10th. Due to the logistics involved, we will have difficulty accommodating reservations received after that date, as we need to insure we have sufficient space for those traveling. SO… once you have confirmed the date (please do so right now), be sure to make your reservation right away. I assure you that you’ll be very glad you did.

Free Endowed Membership???!

How would you like to be a proud member of the AASR – Valley of Toledo for the rest of your life, and never again have to pay dues? Well, here’s your opportunity to become an Endowed Member, with all the privileges and perks included!

Yes, that’s right! The Board has approved a program presented by the Membership Committee, whereby any Brother of the Valley can earn a free or reduced price toward an endowed membership. It’s pretty easy; all you have to do is share your love of Scottish Rite Freemasonry with your friends, and get them to join the Valley. This is a three-year program, so there’s plenty of time for you to take advantage of it.

Here’s how it works: the program starts for you as soon as there are 5 petitions submitted to the Valley with you as a first line signer. These petitions must be submitted between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2014. As soon as you have five petitions in within that time frame, you’re automatically enrolled in the program with a $500.00 credit toward the $1,200.00 cost of an Endowed Membership in the Valley. As a result, even if you never submit another petition, all you’ll owe toward the Endowed Membership is $700.00. But WAIT! It doesn’t stop there!

Every additional petition submitted with your signature on the first line during that 3-year period will result in another $100.00 off your endowed Membership! As a result if you are first line signer on 8 petitions you’d have $800.00 credited toward your endowed membership, 10 would credit you with $1,000.00, and if you were to get 12 petitions before January 1, 2015, your Endowed Membership would be FREE! Not only would you never have to pay dues again - or worry about dues increases, but your dues would be paid to the Valley even after your death, in perpetuity. I don’t know of a better gift you can give the Valley of Toledo (unless you’re a jillionaire and want to make a hefty donation, in which case, we need to talk).

When talking to prospective members, remember that the Valley is set up to accept credit cards too, so this is the best time to really take advantage of this program. Even if you don’t get all twelve to sign up, any way to significantly reduce your costs would be a huge benefit. All we ask is that you pay off the balance due on your Endowed Membership within the following three years (before January 1, 2018), and for that remaining amount, the Valley will be pleased to work out a payment plan or accept your credit card.

We hope you will take advantage of this special offer, and start accruing the benefits right away. This is the first time such an offer has been made, and it may be the last. Don’t find yourself left in the dust; you certainly won’t want to be looking back four years from now, saying “I wish I’d taken advantage of that great opportunity.” Once we have your first five petitions and you’re officially enrolled in the program, we’ll send you a formal congratulatory notice, with periodic updates as to your progress. Thanks for your attention to this exciting program Brethren, and as of now, it’s “GAME ON!”

Knights of Grass & BladesIt is time to relax for a little while from the tedious task of cutting the acres and acres of grass at the Heatherdowns Complex. Words can’t express the thanks that I offer to those of you for taking your time to come out and spend several hours each week to keep the area looking tidy and clean. We have made several new “Knights” this year to help with the endeavor. We did enjoy the camaraderie at the “round table” at Nick’s Restaurant afterwards. I look forward to seeing all of you again this spring.

The 58th Annual Maundy Service Returns to the Franciscan Center

This is a reminder that the 58th Annual Maundy Service for the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo will once again be held at the Franciscan Center at Lourdes College in Sylvania.

This Annual Maundy Service is presented by Fort Industry Chapter Rose Croix. It is scheduled on Wednesday of Holy Week so as to not interfere with any other religious services. Most Wise Master, Ill. Brother Tom Brenneman, 33º encourages all Masons to support this free service with their attendance. Friends, relatives and neighbors are welcome to attend

as the service is open to the public.

In addition to the religious message the service features impressive ceremonies and inspirational music. The inspiring “Story of the Cross” will be portrayed along with the beautiful Tableau scenes which are a mainstay of the evening.

The Service will be held on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Doors will open at 7:00pm and will close promptly at 7:55pm to prevent latecomers from interrupting the solemnity of the Service.

Please mark your calendar and plan on attending this most worthwhile event. We look forward to seeing you there.

Our financial stability may require even more cuts, but I will do what is necessary to make sure that this fraternal organization goes on to the next generations.

I will tell you that the Children’s Dyslexia Center is in trouble financially. Our audit showed us that we can not continue to assist them. Their Board has worked long and hard to keep them barely afloat each year. I can see that they are getting tired. If they don’t get a lot of financial help soon, they are bound to be doomed. I am not going to sugar coat it. It is a reality check and they need your support. There is nothing in this world that is equal to what we do for these kids. Nobody offers free tutoring and we are highly respected in the educational field for what we are offering. So if you can help now is the time.

Alright, enough doom and gloom. I know in my heart that we are going to come back stronger than ever. We are not going down on my watch! The Scottish Rite has almost 200 years of grand history and traditions that must be told to future generations. And I guarantee you that your children and grandchildren will be able to enjoy their Masonic journey and become a proud Scottish Rite Mason.

Children's Dyslexia Center

To keep our local center operating, it requires approximately $68,000 per year – a number which continues to escalate. We must thank those who have generously donated in the past, as well as those who continue to do so. It is through your generosity that we continue to be the area’s leader in helping children overcome dyslexia. Additionally, we thank those of you who participate in the Kroger Community Care program. Your involvement in this program has helped our center to access a small amount of charitable funding from that source as well.

Despite these acts of generosity however, we still need your help. Whether you choose to donate through the Kroger promotion or through outright donations, we sincerely solicit your financial assistance. If every member of the Valley would give just $10.00 more than they gave last year, or $10.00 if they’ve never given before, we’d be able to continue to help those in our community who need it.

Please consider helping us make the dream of reading a reality for these students. No student should be kept from learning, when the help of our center would insure them a brighter future. Thanks for your help to improve the outlook for these students, and thereby better improve the future for us all in the process. So DID YOU KNOW that every dollar you give will help us to keep the center operating effectively not only for our 40 current students, but for many more to follow as well.
