Pastor’s Note Dear Parishioners, At first glance, today’s Gospel reading might seem like a list of tips on how to act at a dinner party – and, at worst, a cynical guide to how to make ourselves look good. Just act like you think you should sit in the back, knowing you will be invited to move up – and look good in front of everybody else at the party. Jesus is really more concerned about how we see our-selves, however. Do we feel that we deserve the place of honor? If so, we risk the humiliation of being put in our rightful place – further back in the banquet hall. As human beings, we can easily fall into the trap of comparing our-selves with others. We decide either that we’re better than they are, or they are better than us. Either way, comparing ourselves with others is a mistake. Only God, who can read the human heart, can make true and wise compari-sons. The words of Sirach in today’s first reading are a wonder-ful antidote to this human tendency to compare. Conduct your affairs with humility … What is too sublime for you, seek not, into things beyond your strength search not. This does not mean, of course, that we should not try to be better Christians, or to improve our professional skills in order to have a more responsible and challenging job. However, we need discernment and prayer to help us determine what is right for us in God’s eyes – and a realistic knowledge of our strengths and weaknesses. A person with no musical talent, for example, would find no success – or peace of mind – in striving to be an opera star! Today’s reading from Hebrews gives us a sense of what we can expect in our life after death: citizenship in heaven, with the angels in festal gathering. Here on earth, we can prepare for that wonderful day by staying close to God and listening to the way he leads us in our daily lives. Today, as we prepare for another week in service of God and neighbor, let us pray for the gifts of wisdom and discernment from the Holy Spirit – that we might be

When Jeanne was three and a half years old, her father, a fish-erman, was lost at sea. Her wid-owed mother was hard pressed to raise her eight children (four died young) alone. At the age of 15 or 16, Jeanne became a kitchen maid for a family that served poor, el-derly people nearby. Ten years later, Jeanne became a nurse at the hospital in Le Rosais. A er six years she became a servant and friend of a woman she met through the third order. They prayed, visited the poor and taught catechism to children. A er her
friend's death, Jeanne and two other women con nued a simi-lar life in the city of Saint-Sevran. Mother Marie of the Cross, as Jeanne was now known, founded six more houses for the elderly by the end of 1849, all staffed by members of her asso-cia on—the Li le Sisters of the Poor. By 1853 the associa on numbered 500 and had houses as far away as England. Jeanne died in 1879, on August 30. Her cause was introduced in Rome in 1970, and she was bea fied in 1982 and canonized in 2009.

Religious Education here at St. Clare is more than just a
Sacramental preparation. Our program is design to keep build-
ing upon what children learn each year -1st to 6th level- so they continue learning about God’s love, the Catholic Church and how they can follow Jesus’ footsteps. During the second year they prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. After celebrating the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation, there is still much more to discover and we would like to have your children back to continue their journey of faith with us. We invite you to come to the office to register your child(ren). We welcome children 7yrs and older. Are you interested in becoming a Catho-lic? If you are, or know someone who is,
get involved with RCIA and learn some more about our faith. RCIA classes provide weekly education sessions in a warm learning community for those who are interested in joining the Catholic Church. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: The Passion of St. John the Baptist Friday: First Friday Saturday: St. Gregory the Great; First Saturday TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Perhaps the most familiar traditional symbol that identi-fies bishops is the crosier that they carry. We see the shep-herd’s staff and immediately rich images from scripture come to mind, as well as the recollection that the first to respond to Christ’s presence in our world were the shep-herds. The staff is more than a walking stick; its crooked top is useful in snaring errant sheep but also in keeping the flock united. Bishops carry the curve outward, indicating their ministry to the wider flock, while abbots (and some abbesses, too) carry the crosier with the curve pointing in, indicating that their ministry is to the monastery alone. The crosier was once also carried by the pope, but was phased out centuries ago. You may recall that in pre-“popemobile” days, the pope was often carried around on a portable throne called a sedia gestatoria. Since he didn’t do much walking, the need for a crosier was minimal. Pope Paul VI introduced the innovation of a walking staff in the 1960s, and everyone remembers Pope John Paul II’s walk-ing staff, not a crook, but a delicately sculptured crucifix. Thus, the pope carries a “pastoral staff” rather than a cro-sier. Precisely because the pope’s ministry is universal, to the whole world, popes will likely leave crosiers in the hands of the bishops they commission for care of specific flocks.—Rev. HUMILITY Have you ever been in a group of people—maybe on a tour, at a social gathering, or at church—and dis-covered that you have just been talking with a well-known author, corporate CEO, great scholar, or politi-cian? Your first thought is the hope that you didn’t say anything to embarrass yourself; but your second thought is how much they seemed like such “regular” folks. What is it that makes people seem so “regular”? Today’s readings give us a clue when they stress the importance of humility. It is so hard for us not to tell the first person who will listen how busy we are, how hard we work, how much money we donate, and how important our job titles are. We think these accolades make a difference to people, and if we don’t tell them, how will they ever know? But if our actions demonstrate our values, people will recog-nize our worth on their own. Reflexão por João Pereira Arruda
As leituras deste Domingo levam-nos a reflectir sobre a hulidade. O “fermento farisaico de que Jesus nos fala é precisamente o contrário á humildade e ao ser humilde. Jesus ao fazer-Se humano tal qual um de nós humilhou-Se para nos revelar a verdade de Deus. Na humildade está a verdade de Deus. A pessoa humilde é aquela que tem a atitude mais justa consigo mesma, com os outros e com Deus. O “fermento farisaico” leva-nos a convencer-nos a acreditar que ser bem sucedido na vida e conquistar a felecidade na vida é estar nos primeiros lugares, ser campeão, ter poder sobre os outros e exercer o mesmo contra a dignidade e respeito humano. Deus ama-nos como somos, e somos criados á semelhança de Deus. Quanto mais estivermos na nossa verdade , mais humildes seremos. Quando Jesus diz: Quem se humilha será exaltado”, não quer isto dizer que é para receber um troféu, como se fazem nas competições desportivas ou no ultrapassar as metas dos objectivos das grandes corporações, simplesmente está a dizer-nos que a humildade é a nossa verdade! Ser-se humilde não é um convite á apatia, mas um desafio que nos empurra a sermos cada vez melhores cristãos. Lembrem-se que ser o último tal como Jesus o demonstrou quando esteve neste mundo e fez-Se um de nós é conresponder ao convite que Jesus nos pede para ser-mos humildes.
Informação Em meio de verão as actividades da nossa comunidade paroquial diminuem nesta paróquia. A actividade semanal da reunião do Grupo de Oração continuem a fazerem-se todas as quintas-feiras na Capela da reitoria. O Grupo de Oração carismática continuam a reunirem-se nesta igreja cada última sexta feira do mês. Outras actividades veem na secção em inglês e o reponsável do boletim informa se esta notícia tem algo a ver com a nossa comunidade. Se os membros desta comunidade têem sugestões por favor as endereçam a qualquer membro do CPP. Lembrem-se que o convite para as pessoas que gostariam de servir em algum dos ministérios da nossa paróquia e da liturgia em português por favor contactem com João Arruda e a formação apropriada será provida ao novo leigo. Na vinha do Senhor há sempre lugar para se trabalhar e o Espírito Santo e generoso em doar-nos de dons que devem ser oferecidos á comunidade.

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe
¿Qué es la Presentación a los 3 años? De acuerdo a la Arquidiócesis de México, la tradición de presentar a los ni-ños al templo a los 3 años de vida, tiene su origen en la épo-ca de la Reforma (siglo XIX), pues se consideraba que a esa edad ya había consolidado su existencia dada la alta morta-lidad infantil de la época. Por lo que la gente solía ofrecer una misa de acción de gracias por la vida del infante (niño o niña). Con el paso del tiempo, en la imaginación popular se fueron integrando “interpretaciones” y “significados” muy variados e imprecisos para dar sentido a dicha celebración. El más conocido de ellos, tiene que ver con un hecho no histórico, pero muy arraigado entre los católicos, que es la presentación de la virgen María en el templo por sus padres Santa Ana y San Joaquín, suceso narrado en el protoevan-gelio de Santiago (también conocido como evangelio apócri-fo), donde se relata que María siendo niña fue llevada al templo para ser iniciada en el conocimiento de la fe y en el servicio al templo, donde fue recibida por el sacerdote y aceptada con agrado por todos, permaneciendo ahí hasta que fue solicitada en matrimonio por San José. No existe constancia histórica de esto, y el protoevangelio fue conside-rado apócrifo, por lo que fue desechado. Existen otras teo-rías, pero ninguna de ellas explica de manera acertada lo que celebramos en la presentación de los tres años. ¿Qué debe ser entonces la Presentación de los niños y niñas a los 3 años? Ésta celebración debe ser una acción de gracias por la vida del infante y más que una presentación, pues el niño es conocido por Dios y por la comunidad de creyentes, ya que es un bautizado, es una oportunidad de pedir la bendición de Dios en la vida del niño o niña, así co-mo un momento para pedir la ayuda divina para papás y padrinos, para que puedan cumplir con el compromiso que adquirieron cuando llevaron a bautizar a sus hijos, de ense-ñarles la fe y el amor a Dios, principalmente por la vivencia de valores y actitudes cristianas en su familia y en su en-torno social.
