Dear Parishioners, There is a simple, good and holy custom that exists among some. When-ever a funeral procession passes by, one pauses and prays for the person who has died, and for the family grieving their loss. Whether or not we have participated in that custom, it is doubtful any of us has ever witnessed a U-Haul following the hearse to the cemetery. Why? Because of the old adage, “you can’t take it with you.” Fool is not a word we are accustomed to hearing Jesus use. Jesus’ use of the word in today’s parable is done so to drive home a very important reality. If we are going to spend our lives chasing after things that in the end will not follow us in that U-Haul to the cemetery, instead of fol-lowing after him, we may not like where we end up. Jesus does not condemn the rich or call everyone to live in poverty. It is about balance. It is about perspective. Saint Paul puts it this way today: Put to death . . . immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and greed that is idolatry. Another way to approach this would be to ask ourselves about our most fundamental and underlying motives for our decisions, behaviors and ac-tions. Is it to serve others or simply to get ahead in life? If we approach whatever we do with the attitude of service to others, we will be rich beyond our imagination. If we approach our actions only with the attitude of, “bigger is better, status is important, success at the ex-pense of others is part of the cost of doing business,” then we are headed toward spiritual poverty, which can produce catastrophic conse-quences. We must see each person, including ourselves, as equally contributing to the kingdom of God; each according to his or her abilities and blessings. Remember, God does not show favorites. We are all to be on the same path, for Christ is within each of us, guiding us and sometimes pulling us toward the finish line. So, let us spend our time growing rich in the things of God and not of this world.

Recuerda, Dios no muestra favoritos.

St. Clare School News Summer 2019

Parish Bulletin | St. Clare School | 4 August 2019

Dear St. Clare Parish Community, Congratulations to our Summer School crew for a suc-cessful eight weeks serving students and forming future leaders. With campers from St. Clare School and other schools in the area the camp offered weekly field trips, fun activities and academics. Make sure to sign up early next year to save your spot! We thank our families for helping us prepare the school site yesterday in our first of two work days before the opening of school on Wednesday, August 14. We appre-ciate your patience as our families navigate the drop off and pick up procedures. Please note that because we have a campus separated by a street, please take great care as you drive on Washington Street as our students, classes and families use the crosswalk often. We are grateful for your understanding. We are accepting applications for openings in TK and Grades 1-6. Please contact the school office ([email protected]). Visit our website: www.stclare.school to learn more about our school pro-grams. To help St. Clare School continue its mission through your gift of time, treasure or talent, please contact me ([email protected]) or the school office at 408-246-6797.

We ask for your prayers for our students, school families and our teachers for another successful year. We will keep you, our parish community, in our prayers. With gratitude and thanksgiving for walking this journey with us, Mrs. Cecile Mantecon, St. Clare School Principal

USING OUR TIME WISELY

A jar of honey lasts practically forever. The oldest jar of honey ever dis-covered was over five thousand years old. Honey is quite different from market-fresh produce, then; because most fruits and vegetables last only a few days, we treat them carefully. At this time of summer, we rush to find recipes for cher-ries and cucumbers so we won’t waste a single one. We wouldn’t feel that same urgency about honey. In our own way, we are as delightful and fragile as ripe produce. To-day’s readings urge us not to spoil, but to make good use of our limited time on earth. Ecclesiastes reminds us that because God provides for us now and al-ways, we can manage our daily affairs without anxiety. Saint Paul encourages the Colossians to keep thoughts of heaven in everything they do, and Jesus himself asks us to treasure not earthly wealth, but God alone. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Apart from the period from Thanksgiving through Christmas, the summer is a favored time for family reun-ions. We trace family trees and recall our origins. Wor-ship has a family tree as well, and the way we celebrate today has been influenced by various styles and customs through the centuries. We are Western Christians of the Latin Rite. By far, we are the most numerous Western Christians, but there are other ritual families as well. The Archdiocese of Milan in Italy follows the Ambrosian Rite, Toledo in Spain preserves the Mozarabic Rite and the Arab language, and Lyons in France is home to the Galli-can Rite. Other liturgical families, such as the Celtic in Ireland and the Sarum in England, faded away after the Reformation. Until recent times, members of some an-cient religious orders such as Carmelites and Trappists followed a pattern of Mass that varied slightly from the plan observed in Latin Rite parishes. Isn’t the Catholic Church the same everywhere? Not at all. It never has been! The existence of so many liturgi-cal families in the West reminds us that unity, not uni-formity, is what the Church seeks to achieve among her children. We are united in faith, but wonderfully diverse in rituals, ceremonies, languages, customs, and spirituality. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

STAND AND BE COUNTED

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recog-nition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to

be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Spon-

sors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contribution mem-ber.

So, are you a registered parishioner? If not please consider registering. Registration forms are available in the Parish

Office and in the Church vestibule.
