Dear Parishioners, Each of us has a list of responsibilities that are important. We have work and families, organizations we support and people who depend on us. We try to fulfill all our duties properly. This is part of living a good, Christian life. Undoubtedly there are times when we could give more, and maybe even sometimes when it would be best to give a little less. But we feel commit-ted to doing what’s asked of us, and when we do these things, we feel we’ve done what we should – what God asks of us. And yet, in today’s Gospel Jesus tells us that this is not enough. Simply fulfilling what is required as a parent, child, employee, com-mittee chairperson or neighbor is not the essence of discipleship. Listen again to what Jesus says: If any one comes to me without hating his father- and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. The force of a text like this reframes the ordinary world we know. Jesus’ words should shake us up. So let’s let them. According to Jesus, what is discipleship? Discipleship is not just one more hobby or extracurricular activity. Disciple-ship is why we do what we do, mindful of the costs it brings. What Jesus commands is prioritizing him as the source of our life, and as its ultimate end. It is making our love for him the ordering principle of everything else we do. For without him, nothing else matters.

HAPPY GRANDPARENTS DAY

Sunday, September 8th

Mrs. McQuade started her campaign for a day to honor grandparents in 1970. ... It was in 1979 that President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first Sunday after Labor Day each year as National Grandparents Day (September was chosen to signify the "autumn" years of life).

Continuous Faith Formation Program

“Faith Formation is more than a subject to be taught, it is an invitation to a way of life” Joe Paprocki.

Next Sunday, September 15th., the importance of pass-ing on our faith will be em-phasized. The Church in the United States will celebrate the Catechetical Sunday, un-der the theme “Stay with Us.” Catechetical Sunday offers an opportunity to recall that all the Baptized have roles in handing on the faith in their daily life, families, work, and church involvement. Catechists that will serve in our parish will be formally

commissioned for ministry to our community at the 9:00am Mass.

ST PETER CLAVER (1580-1654) was a Spanish Jesuit missionary to Latin America. He is known as the "Apostle of the West Indies" and the "Slave to the Slaves." For 38 years of his life, Claver lived in Cartagena, one of the major Caribbean ports in Latin America to which slaves were imported. He had no social pro-gram but simply geared his life to the primary needs of the often sick and bro-

ken slaves who arrived on American shores. He was not a "revolutionary" priest, intent on changing the fabric of soci-ety; he simply cared for the slaves and exhorted the slave masters to be humane.

SCHOOL HAPPENINGS

SUPPORTING ST. CLARE This weekend’s second collection throughout the Diocese of San Jose is in support of Catholic Schools. Because we are primarily a tuition-based institution, we rely on the kind-ness of those who have benefited from Catholic education and who see the value of Catholic schools in the formation of children to become good humans and faithful followers of Christ. Our schools educate students from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities. As St. Clare’s mission states, “We, the St. Clare School Community, joyfully embrace the Gospel mission entrusted by Christ to His Church. Believing that everyone is made in the image and likeness of God, we cherish and celebrate our diverse backgrounds and cultures.” Many of our graduates have gone on to become well re-spected members of the community as loyal public serv-ants, well-respected educators and compassionate, social-ly-conscious members of the business community in the Silicon Valley and beyond. Catholic Schools do matter. Catholic School students do make a difference. We are not merely a charter school with a cross on top. We are a school deeply committed to forming the faith life of our students and our families. We are so grateful to you, our parish community, for your support of our school, espe-cially as it exists in this community and neighborhood. If there is anything we can do better as neighbors, the best way to reach me is by phoning the school at 408-246-6797. JOG-A-THON | Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019 | Bellomy Field at Santa Clara University St. Clare School Jog-A-Thon is underway! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians share a love for the Byzantine liturgy because it is during the Eucharist that the Church is most true to its identity, expresses its in-tegrity, and discovers its vocation. Eastern Catholic and Or-thodox Christians celebrate essentially the identical liturgy, with only very slight variations. It is a fairly complex ritual weaving together three separate layers of prayers: a liturgy prayed in the sanctuary by priests, often hidden by a curtain or screen; a liturgy sung by the assembly and led by a dea-con in front of a screen formed of painted icons; and a third layer of private prayer by the priest, who prays in support of the deacon and the faithful. It is an eyes-wide-open experi-ence, gorgeous in visuals, and filled with the sound of God’s people singing prayer. The energy of the worship centers on the presence of Christ, largely through an awareness of heaven touching earth when the Church gathers to cele-brate. In the late twentieth century, Latin Rite Catholics were encouraged to embrace a style of worship that was “full, con-scious, and active,” a value that has never been lost in the East. The liturgy has great impact in its beauty, in its poetry and contemplation, and by the actions of bowing, signing with the cross, and chanting that are required of the assem-bly. Contact with the Eastern Church reveals some key val-ues that have been obscured in our own Church and are slowly being recovered.—James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross celebrates two historical events: the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Hele-na, the mother of the Emperor Constan-tine, in 320 under the temple of Venus in Jerusalem, and the dedication in 335 of the basilica and shrine built on Calvary by

Constantine, which mark the site of the Crucifixion. The basilica, named the Martyrium, and the shrine, named the Calvarium, were destroyed by the Persians in 614. The Church of the Holy sepulcher which now stands on the site was built by the crusaders in 1149.

STAND AND BE COUNTED

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages,

recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when

asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Spon-

sors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contribution member.

So, are you a registered parishioner? If not please consider registering. Registration forms are available in the Parish

Office and in the Church vestibule.
