Dear Parishioners, Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Jesus is asked in today’s Gospel. Matthew makes it clear that those who ask this question are interested in one thing only: how they might en-trap Jesus in speech. If Jesus answered “yes,” he might forfeit his popu-larity with the masses, who resented the pay-

ment. If he answered “no,” he could be denounced to the authorities for inciting people to break the law. Jesus does not give either of the answers his questioners were looking for. Jesus’ reply, Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, rejects the radical position of those who claimed that the Roman gov-ernment was unlawful and should not be obeyed at all. All the empha-sis, however, is on the second part of Jesus’ answer: [Pay] to God what belongs to God. What is God’s anyway? The answer is inescapable: every-thing! From God we receive all that we are and have, sin ex-cepted. God has given us the gift of life, and has preserved our lives until now in the midst of heaven-knows- how-many dan-gers to life. God has given us our talents: everything from the five senses, which we share with the animals, to the uniquely human gifts of thought, speech, love and laughter, to the individual talents that make each person unique. How dull life would be if we were all the same! If paying to God what is God’s means anything, it must mean putting God first in our lives. Are we putting God first in our lives? Or does he get the leftovers? Our spare time (if any)? The gifts and talents that are left over when we have finished doing the things we want to do? Jesus understood, and taught, that we must give God the first fruits – out of gratitude. This grateful giving of first fruits was based on the truth that everything comes from God, and hence everything belongs to God. If we truly want to “pay to God what is God’s,” we must put God first in our lives – in all areas of our lives. There must be no fenced-off areas where he is second or third – or where God is not allowed to enter at all. When we put God first in our lives, we make a beautiful discovery. We find that what is left over for ourselves is always enough, ultimately more than enough! We find that God will never be out-done in generosity. Let us remember this and be good stewards when it comes to supporting our church.

Fr. Tad

Stand And Be Counted Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parish-ioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a per-son is a registered, active and contribution member.

So, are you a registered parishioner?

If not please consider registering. Registration forms are available in the Parish Office and in the Church vestibule.

O God, you sent your Son, Jesus, to bring eternal life to those who believe. I join him in praying for laborers for your harvest. May your Holy Spirit inspire men and wom-en to continue his mission through your priesthood, diaco-nate, religious life and lay ministry. May this same Spirit make known your will for my life.

I recently attended a funeral for the son of a Knight. All funerals

are sad, but this was more so be-cause he was only 34. I am 76

and it gave me cause to think of mortality. Not just mine but of all

people. Man invited sin into our world and death came with it. Come join the Knights and help us bring some

solace to bereaved members.

Sunday Children’s “Finding God” Continuous Faith

Formation Program

Religious Education here at Saint Clare’s is more than

just a Sacramental preparation.

First Parents Class We had our first class for parents, it was so wonderful to see them sharing their thought and coming with ideas on how to grow their own faith and at the same time help-ing their families to grow too. The article “5 Tips for Parents” from World Press -Catechesis in the Third Millennium- give some pointer for parent on how to pass on their faith. Parents are first – You are the first and primary edu-cators of the faith to your children. How are you helping them, as Pope Francis says, “meet Jesus”? How are they growing in “grace and wisdom” (Lk. 2:52) during the years you have them under your roof? Do your children see you taking time to pray & grow in your own faith? The habits and attitudes you model are the most important ones in your child’s life and make the most impact. Your words & actions speak to what your kids see as most important to you. Attitude – Your attitude can make a world of differ-ence to your children. Weekly class attendance, family discussions about what was covered in class and general attitudes on going to Mass, praying together and involve-ment in the parish have an effect on your child. Faithfulness – God desires to reveal Himself to us because He loves each one of us so very much. Through weekly attendance to mass and our Faith Formation Pro-gram you are witnessing your faithfulness to the promise you made at your child’s baptism: to raise them in the faith and assist them in their spiritual growth. Your goal is to help your kids get to heaven – this is the most important thing you can do as parents.

Sacramental Preparation - First Communion If your child is preparing to receive for the first time the Holy Eucharist and the sacrament of Reconciliation this year, our Orientation Parents’ meeting in English will be on Tuesday, October 24th, 6:30pm, Upper church; in Spanish will be held on Thursday, October 26th, 6:30pm, Upper church. The greatest gift you can give your child is to deepen his or her spiritual life.

ST. CLARE SCHOOL CLASS NEWS

Kindergarten is off to an academically exciting start this year! In Religion, we have been learning that God loves us and we are children of God. We have been discuss-ing the unique gifts that God has given us. In Science, we have been learning about day, night, the sun, the moon, and the stars. We learned about the Harvest Moon and some of the different moon phases. In Social Studies, we have been talking about Christopher Colum-bus and Johnny Appleseed. We have been talking about how people lived long ago and the difference between past, present, and future. In Math, we have been solving word problems by drawing pictures. We have also been learning how to model and count the numbers zero through ten with objects and numbers. In Language Arts, we have been reading, writing, and discussing the differ-ent kinds of work people do. Finally, in Art, he students have been working on various fall art projects and prac-ticing cutting, using multimedia design elements, and using color.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH The 8th Grade class at St. Clare School are participating in The Stock Market Game sponsored by the San Fran-cisco Chronicle in Mrs. Procaccio’s math class. The stu-dents are given a virtual $100,000 to buy and sell stocks at real-time stock prices. They compete in teams against each other and other schools throughout Northern Cali-fornia. The game started October 2 and will end Decem-ber 8th. One of the student’s parents, Mr. Michael Ngo, a Senior Financial Consultant with Ameritrade, was a guest speaker who educated the class on how to calcu-late market cap. The students also learn fundamentals in investing, how companies use stocks to sustain viability and how to research companies. What Mrs. Procaccio finds most valuable from incorporating this game in her math class is the Catholic teaching of ethics of investing. More information about the game can be found at stockmarketgame.org.

Lord" Tobit 12:15. He is venerated as Saint Raphael the Archangel. Regarding the healing powers attributed to Raphael, there is his declaration to Tobit (Tobit, 12) that he was sent by the Lord to heal him of his blindness and to deliver Sa-rah, his future daughter-in-law, from the demon Asmodeus, who kills every man she marries on their wedding night before the marriage can be consummated. In the New Testament, only the archangels Gabriel and Michael are mentioned by name (Luke 1:9–26; Jude

1:9). Later manuscripts of John 5:1–4 refer to the pool of Bethesda, where the mul-titude of the infirm lay await-ing the moving of the water, for "an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water was made whole of whatsoever infirmity he lay under". Because of the heal-ing role assigned to Rapha-el, this particular angel is generally associated with the archangel. As a particular enemy

of the devil, he was revered in Catholic Europe as a special protector of Catholic sailors: on a corner of Venice's fa-mous Doge's Palace, there is a relief depicting Raphael holding a scroll on which is written: "Efficia fretum quie-tum" (Keep the Gulf quiet). On July 8, 1497, when Vasco Da Gama set forth from Lisbon with his four ship fleet to sail to India, the flagship was named—at the King of Portu-gal's insistence—the St. Raphael. When the flotilla reached the Cape of Good Hope on October 22, the sailors disem-barked and erected a column in the archangel's honor. The little statue of St. Raphael that accompanied Da Gama on the voyage is now in the Naval Museum in Lisbon. The feast day of Raphael was included for the first time in the General Roman Calendar in 1921, for celebra-tion on October 24. With the 1969 revision of the General Roman Calendar, the feast was transferred to September 29 for celebration together with archangels Saints Michael and Gabriel. Due to Pope Benedict XVI's Summorum Pon-tificum, the Catholic Church permits, within certain limits for public use, the General Roman Calendar of 1960, which has October 24 as Raphael's feast day. The Archangel Raphael is said to have appeared in Cordova, Spain, during the 16th century; in response to the city's appeal, Pope Innocent X allowed the local celebration of a feast in the Archangel's honor on May 7, the date of the principal apparition. Saint John of God, founder of the Hospital order that bears his name, is also said to have received visitations from Saint Raphael, who encouraged and instructed him. In tribute to this, many of the Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God's facilities are called “Raphael Centers” to this day. The 18th century Neapolitan nun, Saint Maria Francesca of the Five Wounds is also said to have seen apparitions of Raphael. Info source Wikipe-dia .

Archangel Saint Raphael Feast day October 24th

The name of the angel Raphael appears in the Biblical Book of Tobit. The Book of Tobit is considered deuteroca-nonical by Catholics, Orthodox, and some Anglicans. Raph-ael first appears disguised in human form as the travelling companion of Tobit's son, Tobiah (Greek: Τωβίας/Tobias), calling himself "Azarias the son of the great Ananias". During the course of the journey the archangel's pro-tective influence is shown in many ways including the bind-ing of a demon in the desert of upper Egypt. After returning and healing the blind Tobit, Azarias makes himself known as "the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the

Quizeram e tentaram provocar Jesus. A verdade é que a Jesus ninguém engana. Jesus vˆnos corações. Conhece o íntimo do nosso coração, pensamentos e desejos. Nada lhe escapa!

— Copyright © J.
