Children embed their understanding as follows: Addition 3-digit + 3-digit partitioned column addition (no exchange, followed by exchange from the ones to the tens, followed by exchange from the tens to the hundreds, followed by exchange in both) 4-digit + 3-digit partitioned column addition (no exchange, followed by exchange from the ones to the tens only, then the tens to the hundreds
