MATÍAS ACUÑA

Matías was born on a Friday the 20th of September 1991, in Santiago, Chile.

He begins his musical journey on the drums at the short age of 8, when he joined the school’s Big Band.

When Matias started acquiring knowledge on musical theory he started defining his taste and preferences on music, which inclined for rock and hardcore punk.After several years playing with the school’s band, he joins a band in 2006, then he had the firsts live shows with a band on stage.

After playing with several bands from the hardcore and post-hardcore scene in Santiago, He started studying with drumming instructor Cristobal Orozco (Francisca Valenzuela, Abraham Mateo, Octopus, Myriam Hernandez).Later, after two years of intense studying, Matias was admitted in the prestigious music institute “Projazz”, where he studied “Jazz and popular music performance on Drums”. He remained studying until 2013, taking lessons with Master Andy Baeza (Angel Parra Trío, Session Drummer).

While at his first year of studies at Projazz, Matias was invited to join the prominent hardcore band Contra Todos mis Miedos (“Against All My Fears”), and had his first international tour in 2011, taking them to Brasil and Argentina.

Contra Todos Mis Miedos was a very important band in the South American hardcore scene, and thanks to that, Matías begins to make a name for himself as a drummer in the Chilean and South American scene.

After the recording of an EP, “Santiago / Valparaíso” (2011), two international tours in Brazil and Argentina in 2011 and 2012, and important presentations in Santiago with bands like Bane and Unbroken, in 2012 he joined the band Tenemos Explosivos.

With Tenemos Explosivos, Matias starts developing an important career to this day, having shows all over Chile, and several international tours, taking them to Argentina, Mexico and Colombia.

Also with Tenemos Explosivos, he is invited to large scale festivals such as Rockout Fest. Also, as opening act of the British band Basement in July 2017, in Bogotá, Colombia, and Circa Survive, in September of 2018 in Santiago. To this date, Matias has participated in the recording of two long play productions: “La Virgen de los Mataderos”(2015) and “Victoria”(2017), the last one also being produced by Matias, and currently preparing their next album.

Tenemos Explosivos is currently one of the most important bands of the chilean rock scene.

Since 2013, he also is a member of Chances, a post-hardcore act with whom he had several remarkable shows, including opening for Circa Survive, Bring Me The Horizon and Four Year Strong, and Converge (March 2020), taking Matias drumming to crowds over 5000 at different festivals. With Chances, Matias has participated in the recording of two EP’s, “Trama”(2014) and “Restos Entre Sombras”(2015), with renown Seattle based producer Jack Endino, and one LP: “Distancia Focal” (2017).

Chances is currently in Los Angeles, California, recording their next studio album, after attending The NAMM Show 2020.

From 2014 to 2018, Matias was member of Slowkiss, and has being part of two EP recordings: “The Cliff”(2015) and “Ultraviolet”(2017), the later which was supported on their second tour in the United States in 2017, and getting plays in American radios such as KROQ, KLOS, KCSN, 91X, KXTE, KSLX.

With Slowkiss, Matias played at the globally known festival SXSW at the 2017 edition, playing two shows including the Flatstock Stage at the Austin Convention Center.

From 2015 to 2019, Matias participated in a Post Rock project called “Tilde”.Where he recorded an EP and two singles.Also as an opening act of the Citizen band in Santiago.

Matias is currently recording new material for a new Project called “WALL” to be presented in 2020. In this work, Matias had the opportunity to work with the renowned drum tech Ross Garfield “Drum Doctors” (Nirvana, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many more).

Matias has developed a career as a session drummer parallel to being involved with his bands, and has participated with diverse groups and artists; Adelaida, Schwenke & Nilo, Martín Berríos, Circulo Polar, Juanita La O, Hombre Pez, Tilde, Aeons Collide, Sin Karma and many others.

Also, Matias has been an avid drum instructor for over 10 years, having helped many upcoming drummers since 2010.Matias drumming and musical knowledge has allowed him

to build a strong and extensive career in just a few years, maintaining a remarkable continuity with an average of over 100 show a year, and rapidly increasing. His drumming has led him to work with a plethora of very talented artists, in a variety of musical instances.
