MATC Truck Driver Program Entrance Requirements
Before you can enter the program you must meet the following entrance requirements 1. 18 years of age or older
2. Complete or update (including $30 application fee) to MATC
3. High school diploma or GED/HSGED 4. Valid (class D) driver’s license and acceptable driving record

How do I know if trucking is right for me?
In short, truck drivers move commerce by way of tractor trailers. Some drivers travel across the entire country and
some drive locally. But almost all truckers begin as OTR (Over the Road) drivers, which basically mean long distance
trucking and being gone 2-3 weeks at a time.
Most truckers, their first year out on the road, earn an average of $40,000 a year. After a few years out, those same
truckers are making an average of $50,000-$60,000 annually. Veteran drivers who own their own trucks make
average salaries that are over $100,000 a year. What other profession can you get into, where the pay is that good?
If you want to be successful and make really good money driving truck, it is not an easy job. The hours are very long,
it takes a lot of self-discipline, and you spend the vast majority of your time alone. None of that sound too appealing
to most people as trucking is not for everybody. One of the most common reasons people walk away from trucking is
the relentless solitude; the isolation from their home, their family, and their friends.
Best candidate is independent, hard-working, adventurous guy or gal, who doesn’t like people looking over his
shoulder; don't like routines, and who love a challenge.
One other great reason to get into trucking is the chance to see this great country of ours. How many states have you
been to? Are you one of those people who haven’t been to very many places? Well, get into trucking and you will
have the opportunity to explore America. See why most people consider this to be not only the greatest country in
the world, but also the most beautiful one as well. Want to explore America? Become a trucker.
For those considering a career in truck driving, there's a lot of background and medical information that will
determine whether or not you qualify to be a truck driver. Most important: If you do drugs or have alcohol
dependency, don't get into trucking. Your career will be short. If you're worried about a test before you ever start
school, you're not going to be happy with un-announced random tests you'll run into if you drive a truck.

Overview – After completing this 8-week Truck Driving program, you will enter an industry in need of
qualified workers. Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions as drivers or local drivers with skills
and knowledge related to safety, maintenance and operation of trucks. The curriculum focuses on
developing backing and driving skills through classroom, lab, range and roadway experiences. Online
resources also assist with developing your skills. Students have the opportunity to attain Class A CDL
(Commercial Driver’s License) as a result of their training.
Career Outlook – Currently the need for qualified truck drivers remains high in Wisconsin. The demand
for truck drivers is expected to continually increase due to the retirement of current drivers and the
increased need for freight-carrying services. Long-term drivers interested in running their own business
can become independent owner-operators of their trucks.
Program Learning Outcomes — Employers expect graduates to:
Drive a commercial vehicle safely
Inspect the vehicle to ensure safety of operation
Demonstrate knowledge of the laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of a
commercial vehicle in the United States
Complete appropriate paperwork correctly
Demonstrate ability to plan trips and routes including managing loads and weight distribution
Communicate effectively with peers, customers and supervisors
Obtain a commercial driver's license
Preparation for Admission — The following are required for admission to the program:
High school diploma or GED
18 years of age or older
Valid driver's license (Class D)
Acceptable driving record
Department of Transportation medical exam and drug test
Attaining your CDL learner’s permit by passing the written test prior to applying for this program is
not required. However you will need to obtain one during the first few weeks of classes. The
Wisconsin Department of Transportation Motor Vehicles Division administers the test. A free
study guide is available; the DOT charges a fee to take the test.
The truck driving profession does not tolerate drug and alcohol use. A DOT drug test and DOT
medical exam will be part of the entrance requirements to enter this program. These will be at the
candidate’s expense. All faculty and students will be subject to a random drug screening program
as required of all employers and schools who have drivers of heavy equipment.

(Questions may be directed to: [email protected]) Any student who is currently enrolled in school, or will be enrolled during the year the scholarship is awarded can apply for the Trucker to Trucker scholarship. Applicants will need to write and upload a short essay (maximum of 500 words) answering one of the following questions: Why did you decide to become a professional driver? What would a scholarship from Trucker to Trucker mean to you? Spring Deadline The deadline to submit is May 1st at midnight. Applicants will then be reviewed and the winner will be announced on May 15th. Fall Deadline The deadline to submit is November 1st at midnight. Applicants will then be reviewed and the winner will be announced on November 15th. The $500 award will only be usable for tuition and book costs and the check will be written to the winner's school of choice.
Women in Trucking Scholarship You can apply on-line at https://www.womenintruckingfoundation.org/scholarship/ (1.888.464.9482) Scholarship applications will be accepted January 1st through February 28th. Eligibility: Any individual who will be attending a training facility for the purpose of advancing her/his career in the areas of safety, driving, technical, logistic, or leadership is eligible to apply for a scholarship. Duration and Amount: An approved scholarship from the Women In Trucking Foundation will be awarded as a one-time payment at the conclusion of the training and may vary from $500 to $2,000 per recipient. Method of Awarding: The trustees will mail the scholarship check directly to the training facility to be held until the applicant has completed the training. Scholarship monies are to be used for tuition or expenses related to educational purpose only. Qualifications to be Considered: The recipient of the scholarship must show financial need and must demonstrate a desire to further her/his career in a trucking industry related career. The scholarship will be awarded without regard to sex, race, color, national origin, or religion.

Acceptable proof of examinationAcceptable proof of examination for the Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles(DMV) is a fully completed Medical Examiner's Certificate . A medicalexaminer on the National Registry will need to complete the FMCSA MedicalExamination Report for Commercial Driver Fitness Determination as well asthe certificate at the end of the packet. You will need to carry a copy of thiscertificate with you when operating a commercial motor vehicle. Werecommend that you make a copy of your card to keep in your files.

If you do not hold a federal medical card or are not grandfathered, you will beissued a restricted commercial driver license. This license would only be validif you are:

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) offers two waivers to drivers who wish to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) but do not meet federal medical standards due to insulin-dependent diabetes or vision impairment.
To apply for an insulin-dependent diabetes waiver or a vision impairment waiver, you must describe the:
» type of vehicle you intend to drive (i.e. straight truck, tractor/trailer combination, tank, etc.);
» type of driving you intend to do (i.e. long-distance transport, local transport, etc.);
» type of cargo you will transport;
» number of hours and miles you will drive, listed by daytime and nighttime operation;
» modifications made to the vehicle you intend to drive.
WisDOT will send a letter approving the waiver to the driver with instruc-tions that it be carried with them when operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle. The waiver will expire no later than 2 years and 3 months from the date of the latest examination.
The appropriate renewal forms will be sent to the driver at the time of renewal. If the completed forms are not returned within the required time period, the waiver will expire.
A driver is not eligible for a Wisconsin waiver under Chapter Trans 327 if the driver had any moving violations or reportable at-fault traffic crashes while operating any motor vehicle in the three-year period prior to the date of application.
A waiver can be cancelled due to non-compliance with applicable reporting requirements, a change in medical condition or driving history.
Chapter Trans 327 diabetes and vision waivers do not apply to grandfathered commercial drivers, school bus or passenger endorsement operators. Contact the WisDOT Medical Review Unit with questions.

Diabetes Vision Waivers(WisDOT Chapter Trans 327) for a Commercial Driver License to Drive Intrastate Commerce in Wisconsin

Diabetes WaiverA person who has insulin-dependent diabetes may apply for a diabetes waiver.
To qualify for the diabetes waiver, a driver is required to submit two separate Medical Examination Report Forms MV3644 completed by two different physicians (MD or DO), Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber (APNP) or Physician Assistant (PA-C). The information on the Medical Examination Report forms must indicate that the driver’s diabetes is not likely to cause a loss of ability to operate or control a commercial motor vehicle and must be based on examinations conducted within 90 days immediately prior to applying for the waiver.
Form MV3644 is available at http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/drivers/driver-forms.htm.
Vision WaiverA person who has less than 20/40 visual acuity in each eye or less than 70-degree visual field from the center of each eye may apply for a vision waiver.
To qualify for a vision waiver, the driver is required to submit a Certificate of Vision Examination by Competent Authority Form MV3030V based on an examination conducted within 90 days immediately prior to applying for the waiver.
Form MV3030V is available at http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/drivers/driver-forms.htm.
The Certificate of Vision Examination by Competent Authority Form MV3030V must state the driver:
» does not have a progressive eye disease;
» has vision in the best eye, corrected or uncorrected, of at least 20/40 (Snellen);
» has a minimum of 70-degree visual field from center of at least one eye;
» has vision that is not likely to cause a loss of ability to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV).
A driving evaluation and/or more frequent medical or vision follow-up by the Wisconsin DOT may also be required.
Once approved, the driver license will have the following restrictions:
» No CMV operation in interstate commerce
» No CMV operation in intrastate commerce unless exempt by state or federal law
»Valid Wisconsin waiver on file
