Questions?
Solving Equations
Objective: To review how to solve two-step equations using inverse operations.
equation – states that two expressions are equal.
solution of an equation – is any value of the variable that makes the equation true.
equivalent equations – are equations that have the same solutions.
Properties of EqualityFor any real number a, b, and c
Addition Property of Equality
If a = b, then a + c = b + c
Subtraction Property of Equality
If a = b, then a – c = b – c
Multiplication Property of Equality
If a = b, then a ∙ c = b ∙ c
Division Property of Equality
If a = b and c ≠ 0, then =
Solving Equations
inverse operations – are operations that “undo” (are the opposite of one another).
To solve an equation: You must first understand how the equation was “BUILT” so you can “UNBUILD” it!
