Accommodations for Disabilities Students with disabilities who want to request academic accommodations are responsible for informing their instructors and Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) as early in the semester as possible, or at least two weeks before the accommodation is needed. To have accommodations authorized, students must provide DSPS with verification of disability and meet with a DSPS professional for an evaluation of needs. Students may schedule a DSPS appointment by coming to the DSPS Office in E-105, by phoning us at (714) 628-4860 or by emailing us at [email protected].
Attendance Daily class attendance is required and essential! You are responsible for any announcements I make in class, including any changes to the schedule. A student may be dropped if they miss four or more classes (2 Tardies or 2 Leaving Early = 1 Absence). If you are going to miss a class please call or email. Treat the class like you would a job. If you decide to drop this class, it is your responsibility to drop via WebAdvisor or at the Admissions Office. Please let me know if you decide to withdraw. The last day to drop and NOT have a “W” and receive a refund is February 26, 2017. The last day to drop and receive a “W” is May 14, 2017.
Math Study Hall (MaSH room U-80) The Math Study Hall (a.k.a. MaSH) is a service provided by SCC that provides students with supplemental learning to the classroom. A math faculty member or an instructional assistant is always on duty to assist students with questions or concerns from their math class. Additionally, computers are available for students to access mathematical software or complete internet-based assignments for a math class. The MaSH is located in room U-80. The hours of operation for Spring 2016 are:
February 13 – June 9 Monday through Thursday: 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closed during Spring Break and Holidays
To utilize the MaSH, you must enroll in Math N55L, Section #34559. This is a Pass/No Pass, Open Entry/Open Exit lab course. You
Instructor Dr. Laney Wright Email [email protected] Phone Number 714-628-4924 Office D-116-6 Office Hours MW: 10-10:30 am (D-206) and 12:00 – 1:00 pm (D-116)
TR: 10-10:30 am (A-106 or 107) and 12:30 – 1:00 pm (D-116)
will need to complete at least 10 hours and two study-skill activities in the MaSH within the 16-week semester to earn 0.2 units with a grade of Pass (P). Note, if you have to drop the class, be sure to drop the lab also to avoid a No Pass (NP) in the lab. Attendance is tracked through the sign-in computer so when entering the MaSH, have the assistant slide your student ID card or type in your ID number at the sign-in computer (do not use your SSN, it will not work). When leaving, sign out the same way you signed in; signing out is critical in order to avoid losing any hours completed. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Alicia Frost at 628-4929 or Vanessa Jones at 628-4948.
Class Behavior Based upon the RSCCD Standards of Student Conduct (also known as the Code of Conduct) all students will be in violation of the code should you become disruptive in any way, such that you disrupt the teaching of this class. This includes excessive talking with your peers and cell phone usage, which is inclusive of texting. Students who violate the Standards of Conduct are subject to disciplinary action which includes Warnings, Probation and Suspension from all classes and activities within the district.
Academic Honesty Cheating, which includes seeking help from or providing help to another student on a class exam or quiz, will not be tolerated. The use of cheat sheets and electronic devices (i.e. cell phones, pda’s) other than approved calculators during class quizzes and exams is prohibited. A violation of this policy will result in the student receiving a zero on that assignment and will result in the filing of an Academic Honest Incident Report with the Dean of Students.
Title IX Santiago Canyon College (SCC) faculty are committed to supporting our students and upholding gender equity laws as outlined by Title IX. Therefore, if a student chooses to confide in a member of SCCs faculty regarding an issue of sexual misconduct, that faculty member is obligated to tell SCCs Title IX Coordinator. If a student does not wish to formally report an incident to a faculty member but wishes to speak to someone confidentially about an unwelcome sexual encounter, the student can speak to the College Psychologist who is not legally bound to report the conversation. The College Psychologist is located in the Student Health & Wellness Center in T-102 or call (714) 628-4773.
Homework Homework will be assigned every class consisting of exercises from MyOpenMath website (MOM). It is your responsibility to have all of the problems completed correctly for full credit. If you have any questions on any homework problems, we can discuss them in class or during my office hours. They also have computers in MaSH and you can work on your homework there. Deadline: Homework from the lecture is due by midnight on the the day listed in the schedule! You will be able to access the homework online past the due date for review. Bring your written homework every day to class for questions and review. Late Passes Each student will be given 7 late passes to be used in case of emergencies. They allow you to have an automatic extension on homework only. A late pass MUST be redeemed BEFORE the due date and time. A late pass extends the due date by 48 hours.
Tests and Quizzes There will be 4 exams and 1 final given in class on the dates indicated on the last page. There will be no make-up exams. Everyone is required to take a comprehensive, departmental final examination at the end of the course. The final exam will be given during the last day of class. Quizzes will be given most Wednesdays (see attached schedule).
Labs The lab portion of this class will consist of activities usually done in groups. They are designed to stretch your thinking and help you master the key concepts in the course. You will be expected to collaborate with your colleagues in a professional manner. Your contributions will be noted.
