    Technology Technologycanbeagreatwaytoenhanceoraugmentyourlesson,butitsnotasubstituteforyou.Thepointtothissessionisthatyoucanreachmanystudentselectronicallysimplybecauseyouhavetheirattention.Manyofthemwillgetinvolvedwritingfortheclassblog,oransweringhomeworkquestions,thatwouldntotherwisespendmuchtimeonmathoutsideofclass.

    When will we ever have to use this?

    Surelyyourstudentsneveraskyouthis.Ofcoursetheydo,andyoumaygettiredofhearingit,butitsavalidquestion.Thequestionisjustasvalidforthetopicofthissession.YoucanalsoaskyourselfWhydoesitmattertomystudents?

    Whatevertheanswerstothosequestions,youdontwantyourmessagetolookorsoundlikeCharlieBrownsteacher.Thatswhatsomepeoplehearwhenwestartusingwordslikesummation,squareroot,variance,futurevalue,standarddeviation,etc.Weallusematheverydayisasloganmadepopularbyatelevisionshow,butitsfairlyaccurate.Sinceweallusemath,itsnotthatgreatofaleaptohonetheskillofcommunicatingmath.

    What is Social Media?

    Wikipediagivesafairlycomplicateddefinitionofsocialmedia,butforourpurposes,considerthatsocialimpliestwowayinteraction,soincludedinsocialmediaisanymediumofcommunicationthatallowsinteraction.Television,forexample,wouldnotbeconsideredsocialmedia,butahomeworkhelpforumontheinternetwouldbe.

    SocialmediaarealsoexamplesofWeb2.0.Likesocialmedia,Web2.0appsallhavesomesortofinteractioncapabilitybetweenparticipants.

    Why is Web 2.0 important to me as a math teacher?

    Forthesimplereasonthatitsimportanttoyourstudents.Sincemostofthemadapttoitveryreadily,andliketointeractwiththeirfriendsthisway,manyteachersareseeingagreatdealofsuccessbyusingthesemeansofcommunicatingwiththeirstudents.

    buttherearestillsomeverygoodwaysamathteachercanuseit.OneofthebestwaystouseFacebookforyourclassistostartaFacebookgroupforyourclass.Studentsintheclasscanjointhegroupandwriteonthewallonthegroupspage.Youareautomaticallyanadminwhenyoucreatethegroup,butyoucanappointothersasadmins,andcanevenrotatethisdutyamongtheclasswheneveryouwanttoswitchadmins.YOUhavetotalcontroloverwhojoinsthegroupandwhattheycanposttothegroupswall.

    Thereareanynumberofreasonswhyyoumaynotwantyourstudentsemailingyou,andviceversa,butthereareprobablyjustasmanyreasonswhyyouwouldwanttouseemailonlyyoucandecide.Assumingforthemomentthatyouthinkitsagoodidea,MathTypemakesitveryeasytoincludemathnotationintheseemailclients:

    YoullseeseveralstylenameslistedontheMathTypeStylemenu,buttheoneyoullusemostofteniscalledMath.Actually,Mathisntastyleofitsown;itsacombinationofotherstyles.MathTypeissmartenough,for

    example,toknowthatwhenyouretyping ( )2sin x ,youprobablywantthevariableandthelowercaseGreeklettertobeitalicized,butnotthefunctionnameorthenumber.Thus,MathTypeswitchesbetweenFunction,Variable,GreekSymbol,andNumberstylesasappropriate.(Numberisntastyleyouseeonthemenu,butitisaseparatestyleofitsown,aswellseeinaminute.)Tosetallthisup,selectDefine,atthebottomofthemenu.

    TheselectionlabeledGreekandmathfontsisntnormallychanged.YoullseeyouhaveonlytwooptionsthereanywaySymbolandMTExtraandEuclidSymbolandEuclidExtra.Youlikelywontseemuchdifferencebetweenthesetwochoices,soleaveitsetasyouseeabove.

    Atthelowerrightofthisdialogisafinalcheckbox,labeledUsefornewequations.Thisischeckedbydefault,andifyouleaveitchecked,allsubsequentequationsyoucreatewillusethesesamefontsettingsuntilyouchangethemagain.Ifyourejustwantingthenextequationtohaveacertainspeciallook,butwanttherestoftheequationstolookliketheequationsbeforetheoneyoureworkingon,uncheckthisbox.

    JustlikeMathTypeautomaticallychangesthestyledependingonthetypesofitemscontainedinyourequation,italsochangessizes.Formostofyourequations,youlljustleavethesizespecificationsettoFull.Whenyoutypeanexponent,MathTypeknowsyouwantittobesmallerthanthebase,soitswitchestoSubscriptsize.Likewise,ifyoureteachingsequencesandseries,andwanttoenterasummationtemplate,MathTypeknowstocreatetheSigmasymbollargerthanthesurroundingvariablesandnumbers,soitswitchestoSymbolsize.Eventhoughthisswitchingisautomatic,youstillhavecontroloverwhatsizesMathTypeuseswhenitselectsthesespecialsizes.Tospecifythesesizes,selectDefineatthebottomoftheSizemenu.

    TheDefineSizesdialogisquitedifferentfromtheDefineStylesdialog.Oneofthemajordifferencesisthepresenceofapreviewwindow.Thepreviewwindowdoesntshowyoutheactualequationyoumaybeworkingon,butitdoesgiveyouanindicationofwhatexactlywillchangeifyouchangethesettingthatshighlightedtotheleftofthepreviewwindow.Forexample,inthepictureabove,theonlythingthatwillchangeinthatsampleequationwhenIchangetheFullsizesetting(noticethe12ishighlighted)istheX.

    InMathType,thesizesettingcalledFullisthesettingthatyouwanttobeidenticaltothetextsizeinyourdocument.Ifyouretypingatest,andyoureusing11pttypesize,makesuretheMathTypeFullsizeissetto11pt.

    Noticetherestofthesizes(exceptSmaller/LargerIncrement)arespecifiedasapercent.Percentofwhat?ThesearepercentagesoftheFullsize.Thebeautyofleavingthesesetaspercentagesisthatonceyousetthem,youneverhavetochangethem!IfyouchangetheFullsizefrom10pt(likeyoumayuseinaquiz)to32pt(likeyoumayuseinPowerPointoronanoverheadtransparency),youdonthavetochangetheothersizesbecausetheyrestillproportionallycorrect.Ifyouwanttosettheseothersizesaspointsizes,youhavethatoption,butchancesareyouwontwantto.(NoticetheresaUser1andUser2size.UsethesesimilarlytothewayyouduseaUser1orUser2style.)

    So,whatsaSmaller/LargerIncrement?NoticebackupontheMathTypeSizemenu(picturedatthebottomofthepreviouspage),twoitemsnearthebottomarelabeledSmallerandLarger.Ifyouwanttomakeanitemoritemsinyourequationsmallerorlargerthanthesurroundingitemsintheequation,youcanselectthem,andrepeatedlyselectSmallerorLargerfromtheSizemenuuntilyougetthesizeyouwant.HowmuchsmallerorlargerMathTypemakesthemisdeterminedbytheSmaller/LargerIncrementontheDefineSizesdialog.

    BEWAREItsgenerallynotagoodideatohighlightanentireequationandselectSmallerorLarger,becausetheresultswillalmostcertainlynotbewhatyouwanted!(seebelow)Ifyouwanttoincreaseordecreasethesizeofanentireequation,thebestwaytodoitisbychangingtheFullsizespecification.YoumaywanttodeselecttheUsefornewequationscheckbox.
