Next summer, I am excited to pursue a trip to Ghana, Africa to help an NGO set up a brick and mortar college prep expansion called Exponential Education, but I am still concerned about what on earth I will do with my hair while there. In the meantime, I will be getting in shape for ski season and enjoying our cabin at Donner Lake. Some of you know I was a competitive skier in college so my frequent return to the slopes albeit at a slower version of my prior self is something I can’t wait to do. Mira Loma has been my family for so many years. The relationships I have made will sustain me for a lifetime. I have learned from you a higher level of professionalism and for that I am so very grateful. A note from our good friend and Mira Loma Vice Principal, Ms. Sheila Holley Dear Friends, I would like to announce my retirement as of October 1, 2016. Next summer, I am excited to pursue a trip to Ghana, Africa to help an NGO

set up a brick and mortar college prep expansion called Exponential Education, but I am still concerned about what on earth I will do with my hair while there. In the meantime, I will be getting in shape for ski season and enjoying our cabin at Donner Lake. Ms. Holley has been with San Juan Unified School District for over 35 years. She has taught Social Science, History, Sociology, Government and PE. Sheila coached swimming at Bella Vista for 13 years and coached Moot Court and Speech for 7 years. She has been in Administration for 14 years, 8 of those right here at our Mira Loma. We at Mira Loma are most grateful for your years of service to us, the Mira Loma High School community. We cannot thank you enough and our best wishes.

PSAT for 10th & 11th Grades ­ Wed. 10/19/16 7:45a The PSAT (Official Preliminary

SAT by College Board) will be held on Wednesday October 19, in the morning at Mira Loma. . IMPORTANT: San Juan Unified School District officials will be providing the PSAT FREE of charge to all 10th 11th graders. 9th

graders will pay the traditional $20 for the exam (1st come 1st serve). 9th graders: If they would like to take the PSAT, please pay $20 to Ms. White in the Finance Office starting 9/27/16. 10th and 11th graders: Do not sign up in the Finance Office. For questions, please see Ms. Hall in the counseling office. 10th & 11th graders will receive their practice guides and more

information from their teachers soon. 9th graders can pay NOW for their exams in the Finance Office to Deena White. At that time they will receive their practice guide and instructions. More information about the PSAT can be found below

Teachers, students bring mindfulness to the classroom Mr. Phe Bach, our Mira Loma chemistry teacher facilitated the training. “Self­cultivation and self­observation of what’s going on

around you, and within you.” “Take a slow, deep breath in, and slowly exhale.” This guided meditation was part of a recent training on mindfulness, led by and made for San Juan Unified teachers. Educators explored resources to develop their own mindfulness, aswell as activities and strategies to help students practice mindfulness.

International Passport News MLHS Welcomes Sacramento Area Youth Speaks (SAYS) – Based out of UC Davis,

SAYS is an innovative critical literacy program. Using poet mentors, the program teaches literacy and writing skills through spoken word and performance. The goal of SAYS is to “break the chains of underachievement by elevating the voices of young people and creating spaces for students to become authors of their own lives and agents of change.” The Mira Loma Passport Program was awarded this special program which will come to campus once a week to work with a select group of students. On September 28, Passport will have a special assembly introducing Slam Poetry and the Writing Workshop. Thirty­six Passport students will be participating in the Writing Workshop all year and then participate in a festival at UC Davis in May. DONATIONS to Passport ­ If your business or office has ANY extra office supplies that it no longer needs, please consider donating it to the Passport Program. We need folders, three­ring binders, pens, highlighters, pencils, notepads, paper, and almost anything that will help students succeed in school. Thank you to Bowermaster and Associates of Folsom for donating 5 large boxes of office/school supplies!!! We also need water and snacks for the students in the Writing Workshop. They will be busy creating and performing poetry every week starting in October. All donations are greatly appreciated and tax deductible. Thank you!!! ISSPO Updates Fall 2017 Volunteer Opportunities: CERT Graduation Drill ­ Sacramento Fire CERT is a team of community members working and/or residing in Sacramento, CA and surrounding communities who have been trained, in cooperation with the Sacramento City Fire Department (SFD) to

respond to an emergency in their neighborhood, workplace, or wherever the need may arise. As part of our disaster preparedness training, we conduct two graduation drills per year, providing graduates with a disaster simulation that they must work in, assessing damage, performing search and rescue functions, and triaging and treating patients. Sacramento CERT needs volunteers to roleplay as victims for our graduates. Victims will be provided information on an injury and will portray an injured victim so our graduates can practice search and rescue, triage, transport and treatment of live victims. Our Fall Academy Drill will be held at 3230 J Street in Sacramento on October 1st at 8am. Victims should arrive in casual clothing (jeans, closed toe shoes, sleeves/jackets as weather dictates) and be prepared to act out various injuries. Minors are permitted to attend so long as a guardian also participates. This event is free to the public and benefits our civilian first responders by providing invaluable experience. Be prepared to act your heart out! For students requiring community service time, we can provide sign­offs or letters as needed. Questions regarding the event can be directed to Sacramento CERT by emailing [email protected].

As a group of dedicated parents, teachers and staff we are reaching out and asking you to join in the Mira Loma spirit.
